Montessorium iPhone/iPad Apps

montess.jpg Montessorium has a new app! Sure i don’t have kids, but having grown up a Montessori kid, their iphone and ipad apps are an instant throw back… tracing the letters on a touch screen, aren’t quite the same as tracing the sand paper letters mounted on colored boards… but the portability and animations are awesome! First they launched Intro To Math, next came Intro To Letters… and freshly launched is Alpha Writer! Illustrations are even by Zeptonn! All of them are perfect for toddlers to get to know letters, numbers, and start making words… see some screenshots on the next page.

The Story of (ginger) SNAP

snap0.jpg I love when beautifully packaged delicious liqueurs come with nicely illustrated stories around their necks… like the Art in The Age of Mechanical Reproduction SNAP ~ a ginger snap spirit, from the makers of ROOT. Previously i showed you ROOT as well as a sample of Snap in a glass jar we tasted… since the production bottles were not yet ready… This time you can see the finished product! Popping the cork on this bottle, it smells like gingerbread houses wafting out, perfect for this wintry holiday season… the mix of blackstrap molasses, cloves, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, rooibos tea and vanilla is just irresistible! Perfect for getting creative with cocktails playing with everything from apple cider to toasty fireside drinks. The story was so cute (and educational!) had to share the booklet details with you… lovely illustrations… check it all out on the next page!

Stranger & Stranger: No. 12 Absinthe - 12.25.10

stranger_absintheMAIN.jpg Sometimes that Christmas Spirit, comes in a bottle. Apparently for 2010, that was true. And the spirit came in the form of the Green Fairy. And it is delicious, and beautifully packaged, courtesy of Stranger & Stranger… it’s not enough that they make some of the most beautiful alcohol packaging around, every year for the last 12 years, they have also sent out a special Christmas Spirit, and i sip this year’s absinthe as i write this post. It’s delicious. Absinthe handmade in a single batch, not available for purchase… It is deliciously beautiful! When a bottle says “After one glass, you see things as you wish they were.” how can you resist? “Nectar, bitter-sweet - like the last kiss on the lips of a discarded mistress, is the secret charm of my existence; green as the moon’s light on a forest pool it glimmers in my glass; eagerly i quaff it, and, as i drink, i dream.” Marie Corelli, 1890.

See the close ups on the next page, and a very merry christmas to you!

stranger_absinthe0.jpg

Seriously, the most inspected package i’ve ever received… the main plastic pack was covered in special tape that claimed the package was as sent… as were the many layers of bubble wrap… AND the tube… the tub before this tube, where the seal has clearly been opened… no idea of course if the bottle itself has been tampered with or tested… stranger_absinthe1.jpg

stranger_absinthe2.jpg

stranger_absinthe3.jpg

Who can resist a bottle that says ~ “beautiful, hideous, angelic, devilish”? stranger_absinthe4.jpg

“After one glass you will see things as you wish they were…” Shouldn’t that be all of our lives? stranger_absinthe5.jpg

I can’t even begin to tell you how much i wish i knew Stranger & Stranger the last 12 years. stranger_absinthe6.jpg

Anyone who loves optical illusions, can’t help but adore their logo… stranger_absinthe6a.jpg

To those who have inquired on twitter ~ it is in fact, as 500mL bottle. Adorable, isn’t it? stranger_absinthe11.jpg

Merry Christmas - With toys!

krxmas6.jpg Merry Christmas! Not sure why i’m up at 4am on christmas… and yes, still playing with toys into the night. Kidrobot sent over a fun christmas surprise ~ The Burglars Dunny by Saner… and the flocked santa beard was so hilarious, i couldn’t help but mix and match the accessories instantly. Doesn’t this Rocketworld guy just look far more distinguished in mustache/beard while wielding his spork? Really, all he needs is a monocle now! And you should see the James Jarvis King Ken snow gorilla with the reindeer skull on a stick! Oh, and the actual Santa Barbaja character too… see it all on the next page!

Fashion Embedded Technology

techcloth0.jpg This post is brought to you by Old Navy. Thanks, Old Navy, for inspiring me to rant about tech fashion!Advertisement

When faced with writing a post on technology in fashion instigated by Old Navy and their new Techno Hoodies, we went through everything we could find. It’s actually been a fascinating research project of sorts exploring what is happening in the fashionable technology world, and sadly i expected more! We need more wearable tech! Or washable, wearable tech? The easy thing was letting my mind wander in and out of scifi movies, combining things i’d find, imagining what could be next… so on the next page you’ll see a few examples of my favorite technology in fashion innovations!

techcloth1.jpg Numetrex by Textronics is a workout line that also monitors your heart rate with the fibers woven into the fabric itself! And it transmits from the tiny transmitter you snap in to various devices… from a wrist watch to some work out machines… imagine if it could just connect to your iPhone? Or if you used these sensors to create music/etc that reacted to your heart rate?

techcloth2.jpg Eleksen creates the flexible technologies that allow your clothes and backpacks to integrate in everything from cellphone/mp3 controls to full on keyboards…

techcloth3.jpg Why dont my purses have keyboards built in? or my sleeves have split keyboards? so i can practically air type to text while walking?

techcloth4.jpg Cute Circuit may make the most fashionable looking tech-gowns yet… integrating tons of controllable LEDs into gowns for all occasions. This is Safura, the rapidly rising star of the European music world, taking the stage at the Eurovision Song Contest in her CuteCircuit video gown which interprets the emotion of her hit song Drip Drop.

techcloth5.jpg Here is their Galaxy Dress made up of 24,000 LEDs!

Now imagine if you could combine all of those into some whole new genre of wearable tech? I’d imagine something that looks far more like your every day wear, no need to look like a christmas tree walking down the street… but it somehow monitors your heart rate and interprets your mood, transmitting that data to your phone some how… perhaps controlling the music it plays to you… through your Old Navy Techno Hoodie headphones? And when you need to send a text, no need to try to touch type, just use the keyboard on your lap as you sit on the subway? Which would naturally be subtly embedded in your jeans? And maybe as you bike home your LED windbreaker already knows when you’re signaling and about to turn and displays a warning to those behind you? Is that all so crazy? Technically no reason why we couldn’t do that now!

Bourbon Balls and Ice Brains - 12.22.10

bourbonball1.jpg Ice balls are definitely a huge 2010 trend! Down to the last week of 2010! From The Macallan Ice Ball Machine to the Muji Silicone Ice Ball Mold… and freshly arrived from Maker’s Mark, Bourbon Ball Mold! Also i recently acquired some Fred & Friends Brain Freeze ice brains as another ice ball alternative for scotch and bourbon sipping. So check out the Maker’s Mark and Brain Freeze variations on the next page!

bourbonball2.jpg

Though i don’t have ice balls ready yet, looks like they will have Maker’s Mark logos in them… bourbonball3.jpg

bourbonball4.jpg

It’s definitely a bit messy when you force them together and water spurts all over… bourbonball5.jpg

Though kind of fun as the water squirts out the tops of each sphere… bourbonball6.jpg

A peek at the collection of ice ball silliness in my freezer! bourbonball7.jpg

bourbonball10.jpg

As for the brain balls - love these Fred & Friends Brain Freeze ~ a fun alternative to the ice balls in scotch and bourbon… bourbonball8.jpg

bourbonball9.jpg

Update! Here’s a peek at the ice balls… you can barely make out the logos… iceball.jpg

Though i was a bit premature, and then dropped it and it shattered spilling water out… so more like a rain globe of sorts… iceball1.jpg

Back to the freezer!

New Signal Process BreakOut Pedal

pedal1.jpg On new uses for the iPhone/iPad, or old iPhones… love the idea of adding it to your guitar/music gear as your latest super versatile Pedal! This just came in to NOTCOT.org submissions and was so cool it needed a featured post! New Signal Process BreakOut Pedal - “Boutique audio interface for the iPad and iPhone, handmade in Portland, OR by group of artist tech misfits obsessed with Alice Coltrane records and pranking friends.” Made from high quality hardware, it allows you music to be passed through the iPhone/iPad and right through and ready for your amp ~ “It literally breaks out of the iPhone’s headphone jack, so you can use all your favorite recording, signal processing and sampling apps. It’s mono design fits in perfectly with effects pedals and amplifiers. The internal circuitry solves all signal, feedback and detection issues you may have sending guitar and line signals in and out of the iPhone and iPad, and allows for a plethora of uses, on stage, in the field, and at home, with guitars, mics, amps, PAs, etc.” Awesome, right? The HP Envy100 Printer Unbox

lust.jpg This post is a sponsored series that takes a fun peek at the gorgeous details of modern life. The irresistible design details that enhance our lives… Gillette is the sponsor (Thanks, Gillette!)… but, as always, the post and ideas are 100% NOTCOT!

I had no idea a printer could be such a lustworthy design object ~ inside and out! HP sent over one of the new HP Envy100 e-All-in-One, and it’s kind of magical. Firstly, it looks like a sleek black box with some mirrored details, like the dots on the top… but really, it looks like a box, it doesn’t scream printer/scanner/networked object. In fact, at first glance, i didn’t even understand where the paper went IN or came out. Secondly, it comes wrapped in minimal packaging! The final layer being a reusable bag - that is subtly patterned, a pretty nice tote shape, and perfect for groceries. It’s even the world’s first PVC free printer. Thirdly, it is not only wirelessly networked, it can be printed to from ANYWHERE. Via email! Yes, emailing to print… is like faxing minus the phone line?

So those are the three things that blew my mind first. It’s surprisingly stylish and un-printer like… unexpectedly green from unboxing to materials… and they’ve made great use of the wireless connection! Now the last thing i expected to find useful… the APPS. With its 3.45” highres capacitive touchscreen (basically, its like a smart phone built into it)… you can browse and download apps… without touching a computer, someone who’s lost and needs directions home can browse google maps, and print out two sided page of directions. Surprisingly easily. Coloring pages - paper toy designs - recipes… just like that! Even movie tickets… though it does feel weird feeding my credit card number into my PRINTER. You can even play Sudoku on it… i guess good for office while you’re waiting for it to print/scan? But you have to see the pics on the next page… and what’s inside it… as well as FINLEY! My CubeeCraft i couldn’t help making after printing him out to get some action pics for this post. A printer that distracts me with toys to build… devious!

See? no joke ~ wifi, eprinting, apps, and a smartphone like screen built in! envy2.jpg

The surprisingly minimal packaging… envy5.jpg

including the reusable bag it comes in! envy6.jpg

There is something far too fun about taking pics into its mirrored face! envy7.jpg

see? envy8.jpg

A press shot peek at the bag and printer… envy10.jpg

Now… to show you JUST how easy the printing is! Here are some apps… literally everything from weather to movie tickets to maps to coloring pages… envy11.jpg

… to CubeeCraft! Select a guy and hit print envy12.jpg

… the display moves further out, the tongue swings out from nowhere… envy13.jpg

And there it is! Super fast too! envy14.jpg

Of course the worst part now, is that the printer is now supplying easy access to toys/distractions… physical things to do while (instead of) working… and then i proceeded to cut out Finley here and assemble him… envy15.jpg

… here he is! finley1.jpg

OH! and because i just realized i didn’t show what’s actually going on inside the magic box of HP Envy 100 - here’s a peek… first lift = scanner! second lift = printer guts! finley2.jpg

Dan Funderburgh TIME/LIFE: SCIENCE/LIBRARY - 12.20.10

funder1.jpg TIME/LIFE: Science/Library - A Revolution in a Quiet Room… WOW. Mixing Dan Funderburgh’s signature detailed style with the scientific retro slant of TIME/LIFE… all in gorgeous Vallery in Barcelona. WIsh i could be there! And wishing i could get that microscope wallpaper you see above! Also the jellyfish and other bio organism vinyl stickers on the walls look stunning as well! See more pictures i found over at Funderburgh’s flickr feed after pouring over the Fox Is Black’s post… as well as some from the Vallery, which even has prints for sale!

“The work of a scientist is based on the conviction that nature is basically orderly. Evidence to support this faith can be seen with the naked eye - in the design of a honeycomb or a mollusk’s shell - but scientists seek and discover patterns at every level of being. - The Scientist, Henry Margenau. This series of prints and wallpapers is an interpretation of the Time Science Library - 25 books that were published between 1964 and 1967 on topics such as ‘Energy’ ,’Matter’, and ‘The Mind’. The work is a recognition of the art of knowledge and of the poetry of things we do not and can not know. It’s also a tribute to my parents who are biochemists and my grandfather - an engineer who left me the books.” - Dan Funderburgh.

NogPong - Saatchi LA + Deep Local - 12.16.10

nogpong00.jpg The Saatchi & Saatchi LA xmas email came out yesterday, and this year they are “giving back by making donations to three nonprofit charities on your behalf: The Amanda Foundation, Free Arts for Abused Children and New Directions“… and then they announced NOG PONG! Exactly what it sounds like, only it’s always our turn, and they get to do all the eggnog drinking…

Teaming up with Deep Local (yup, our new favorite people from Project Reindeer, etc) - “Nogbot started as an off-the-shelf ping-pong practice machine. In one weekend, we reverse engineered the machine and replaced its guts with our own wiring and microcontroller. The new microcontroller allowed us to programmatically control the motors, switches and servos to do our bidding. We created a web-based API to communicate with Nogbot allowing an external program to fire balls at different speeds and directions.” Awesome, right? Well they’ve also shared some pics of what the NogBot looks like! (He’s your real world arm launching those balls as you click from behind your monitor.) As well as videos of the game in action, and the making of! Check it all out on the next page… love these projects that really pull the digital and physical closer in such playful ways!

Conan O’Brien “Glass Blowing” for Amex Ad

coco0.jpg So many great inspiring ads and videos this week! The Conan O’Brien Amex Ads ares are just incredible. From a design and travel perspective, they are such a nice look at a culture and an artisanal skill. First there was “Curtain” ad shot in India, where in about a minute you get to see exactly how cloth is made and dyed… in the follow up, we’re brought to Italy, and Conan blows the glass to make the Applause sign! The obsessive attention to detail in these ads, and sharing the process… the pain of imperfection followed by the perseverance to perfect it… such a great thing to aspire to! Take a look at both adverts as well as the great Making Of videos on the next page!

The Macallan’s Highland Cows

coo1.jpg Remember those Highland Cows i fell in love with in Scotland? The ones i spent the most time with were Craig, Ella, Archie, and a few others that lived at The Macallan Estate! Well after a few silly facebook messages about how the cows were doing in the snow these days ~ some fun pics showed up in my inbox! Aren’t they adorable? Check out snowy Scotland as the Highland Cows (pronounced coo ~ like moo!) hang out at The Macallan on the next page. Thanks, Annabel! Totally made my day!

cloud.jpg This sponsored post is brought to you by Windows 7 - text is by Federated Media, silly pic is me… and i couldn’t resist, so i embedded some of the hilarious Windows 7 “To The Cloud” ads i love on the next page just for fun!

Defying the Laws of Physics
Who says you can’t be in more than one place at a time? Sorry, physics - modern technology has defied you and found a way for us to be at home while at work, or at work while at home. No, this isn’t a figment of some multitasker’s imagination. It’s reality for those who get to the cloud with Windows Live.

With Active Desktop, you can access your PC from almost anywhere. The days of lost zip drives and forgotten files are but a distant, bad memory. And, Windows Mesh assures that the files on your PC sync up with all of your devices - from your laptop to your smart phone to your office computer, so that you always have the most recent version of your work in front of you.

Of course, it’s not all about work. You’ll also be able to tap into and share your music collection, photos, and other media. Cloud computing is really about staying connected - not only to your own data, but to others. Whether you start up an HD Chat to share and discuss files, or use one click to share a photo from your awesome concert seats with your social network, you’re connected.

In other words, you’re everywhere.

byAMT Clé USB

cle0.jpg First reaction to byAMT’s Clé USB - the packaging is adorable! And i couldn’t help but thinking ~ this would be an awesome press kit! (I have little mounds of the usual branded USB key press kits in a pile… it’s fun when someone does something cool!) There’s something about the adorable 3D printed key that feels like it would unlock exciting secrets ~ a digital secret garden of sorts? Alissia even mentioned she’s going to start 3D printing logos right into them as well, which would be lovely to customize for gifts, giveaways, press kits, wedding pics, etc? A box of collectoins of keys holding memories would be so cute! Check out more pics of the unboxing on the next page!

Gap’s Project Reindeer

gapreindeer0.jpg I can’t even begin to tell you how giddy i am tonight. One, its 2am. Two, REINDEER! And there is an inexplicable joy when ad campaigns that i adore and would write about anyhow, are supporting NOTCOT! Firstly, let’s look at Project Reindeer minus the Gap involvement. There’s a page where you can watch the Reindeer Webcam, see their GPS tracked movements, watch fun Reindeer videos, and get to know a bit about each of the 8 reindeer in the herd as well as Zoologist, Josh, who focuses on North American Caribou… all the way out in Lake Crystal, MN. That alone is pretty awesome. Now, add the rather bizarre but interesting layer Gap has added on this. Each deer is assigned a specific deal (i.e. Emma = 40% off your purchase). Each day there is a new goal (i.e. Shortest Distance Within 24 hrs). Whichever reindeer reaches that goal, you get that discount the next day. See? A bit bizarre, yet strangely fascinating when you mix it all together?

So, inspired by Project Reindeer, I can’t help but wonder… who is this Zoologist Josh? How did they find him? Are they sponsoring his research? Is there an interesting public way advertising and academic/zoological research can come together? How can we further evolve mutually beneficial relationships of academic research, design inspiration, brands, and more… we’ve often mused over here at NOTCOT about finding ways to get more involved in that side of things. Then again, Justine, our NOTCOT.org editor who is also a research zoologist with a doctorate in animal behavior, coupled with our never ending fascination with nature and creative inspiration at NOTCOT… hmmmm. Much to think about! And who would have thought this late night ramble would be sparked by Gap? And Project Reindeer? Ok but back to the topic at hand ~ check out some screenshots on the next page of their fun simple page… as well as some of the absurdly amusing video bios of the various reindeer!

p.s. For full disclosure, this isn’t a sponsored post. Just something that i discovered because they are supporting NOTCOT, and was such a fun concept, i would have written about it anyhow! I guess it’s a perfect fit!

UPDATE: Project Reindeer is a Gap/AKQA project by Deep Local, the awesome post-digital shop that helps brands create remarkable experiences that bridge the online and physical worlds, who also did the awesome Saatchi LA NogPong!

A World Mapped by (Facebook) Friends - 12.14.10

facebook00.jpg Facebook data infrastructure engineering team intern, Paul Butler, has made a beautiful infographic mapping friendships through plotting their coordinates and connections… and what lit up looks a lot like the Earth At Night!

Butler’s goal? “One that piqued my curiosity was the locality of friendship. I was interested in seeing how geography and political borders affected where people lived relative to their friends. I wanted a visualization that would show which cities had a lot of friendships between them.” And how did he do it? “I began by taking a sample of about ten million pairs of friends from Apache Hive, our data warehouse. I combined that data with each user’s current city and summed the number of friends between each pair of cities. Then I merged the data with the longitude and latitude of each city.”

See close ups, as well as comparisons between his infographic and the Earth at Night on the next page…

Headless/footless women in lovely party frocks holding simple tools… like bolt cutters, axes, gardening shears, chainsaws, crowbars… and wearing dish gloves and oven mits… simple every day things! They also have great names like ‘The load I Carry’, ‘Heavy Handed’, ‘Axe’, ‘B & E’, ‘Prowler’, ‘Leverage’, ‘Character Assassination’, etc. Awesome, right? Martell: “The same pleasure since 1715.”

martell1.jpg Love these french ads for Martell XO that i ran into on I Believe in Adv. Such a fun concept to show that it’s “The same pleasure since 1715”, having the more modern day scene reflect the world in the painting from the 1700s! I supposed the question is did they take it too far? or not far enough? Part of my wishes in the paintings, there would be a painting of an even OLDER time with the same scenario inside… or that the dresses and suites were matching in color… though that might just be because of the girl in the pink dress matching… and a guy in a red suit might be a bit much! See the second ad, as well as close ups of the paintings on the next page!

Ona: The Roma DLSR Insert

ona1.jpg I’m notorious for carrying my beloved 5D mkII relatively unprotected in just about any purse that will fit it… So long as the stitching seems like it can take the weight. And when placed carefully in my messenger bag with laptop and a ton of other gear… well, maybe there are some flip flops buffering the bottom in that hand carry. And i’ve said for years now that i should get some foam and sew up a perfect little insert/sleeve for it! That being said, i’m always on the look out for a sleek solution that doesn’t add more bulk than necessary. And i just stumbled across Ona’s the Roma tonight, and i must admit i’m quite intrigued. Need to go do some measuring to see how it will do with my set up… but it’s looking pretty good!

Here’s what they say: “Let the Roma camera insert transform your favorite non-camera bag into a protective space for your gear. While the Roma won’t replace your carry-it-all camera bag, its the perfect solution for light trips and shoots where only your camera and a lens are needed. But that’s not all. The Roma also has five exterior pockets that’ll help keep your stuff organized. A camera insert that’s also a bag organizer; quite the twofer if we do say so ourselves. Handcrafted with premium Waxwear. Leather side handles for easy removal from your bag.” Dimensions: 10.5”L X 7”H X 4”D. See more pics on the next page!

TVs really are like artwork in the house these days ~ when it takes up so much visual real estate in a room, bar, etc, you really can’t leave it off as a big black screen of nothingness! So the big question is, what do you leave on? And with so many apps and channels and dvd collections and everything these days, i’ve been bouncing the idea around with friends about what we’d possibly leave on in the background streaming while people were over and not actually focused on the TV… which things look pretty and interesting enough to glance at now and then… things you don’t necessarily need to be full engrossed in to have moments of enjoyment from… and yet, you could also plop down on the couch and lose yourself in them if that bored and trying to survive the holidays? Vu: Southern-ish Molecular Gastronomy? - 12.10.10

vu0.jpg Is molecular gastronomy ready to go main stream? Tucked in the rear of the new Marina del Rey Jamaica Bay Inn on Mother’s Beach (where we were quickly warned not to go in the water!) ~ there is a newly opened restaurant, Vu. With the look of an all-american restaurant in a business hotel perched on the marina, it is so well lit, we felt no shame in grabbing a camera for a few food snap shots! My friend kept joking that if we were going to do the molecular gastronomy thing, we may need to go for burgers after… but the dishes here were far more filling than we expected! With deep fried grits, pork belly, bacon powder, collard green fluid gel, goat cheese hush puppies, micro cilantro/arugula/basil, aerated cream cheese, apple roe, sweet tea poached lamb, chicken fried watermelon, coffee-glazed cous cous, and more… it’s a fascinating experiment to taste! Chef Kyle Schutte has crafted quite the mix of comfort foods and local socal deliciousness! See some of the dishes we tried on the next page… and here are the Vu menus.

vu5.jpg

vu6.jpg

And just because i’d feel remiss not to share this… i wasn’t feeling the 3 cocktails we tried… and our chicken was unfortunately raw in the center of the drumstick, but Chef Schutte kindly came out to apologize, and brought us some of the deliciously dense home made (air free!) mint ice cream! The must tries if you find your way to Vu ~ definitely the Lamb Lollis and the Chicken Fried Watermelon… also the Pork belly strangely reminded us of jelly donuts for some reason, and they were less intense if you try it with just Root Beer Jelly on Crispy Grits! You can also see some of Chef Kyle Schutte creations.

Gilt Groupe: Inside the Warehouse - 12.07.10

giltwarehousemain.jpg Thanks to the Gilt Man team for sponsoring this post and bringing me out to NY to play in the warehouse!

First i showed you sneak peek at Love Moschino post… and as promised, here’s the peek inside the warehouse… where we can get a look at where all our Gilt goodies live and what they go through before they get to us! From the cages, endless shelves, and racks of product… it truly made my head spin! Seeing it ALL there, they aren’t messing around, when the products sell out instantly, they really are only selling exactly what is right in this space! And when your waitlist spot suddenly finds that one more dress for you? Sometimes they really found another one hiding in here! Sometimes they convince the designer to sell a few more… Even saw baskets of orders waiting to go out… racks of dresses for sales yet to come… stacks of boxes being assembled waiting for that inevitable noon sale rush! It’s a trip, and so fun to see behind our simple interaction of see the site, order some stuff, and ding dong package arrives! So here’s a peek inside the world of Gilt Groupe… we’ll start at the Park Ave office and work out way out to the Brooklyn Navy Yard Warehouse on the next page!

First stop: Gilt’s beautiful old NY styled Park ave office… right after their all hands meeting announcing that Gilt Man will be launching an FULL PRICE store! Yes, a non-sale store to further grow the Gilt Man/Gilt MANual lifestyle… giltall1.jpg

Read in to it how you will that this very strategic and carefully (quickly!) grown company has a large chess set in its entrance… giltall2.jpg

… and of course fun fashion imagery in the waiting area! giltall3.jpg

Next stop, we hop a car across the bridge to the Brooklyn Navy Yard ~ extra gritty on a dreary day, they are positioned right next to the B&H Warehouse… so tempting to go see what was in THERE too! giltall4.jpg

And up to suite 601 we go… this shot is for anyone else who ever wondered why their Gilt packages always came saying Mercedes on the return label ~ that’s the people who run the distribution… giltall5.jpg

… in we go behind the big security guarded door… giltall6.jpg

giltall7.jpg

There’s something fun about their minty/forest green walls… giltall8.jpg

We peek into the offices, then back out on the floor… giltall9.jpg

Right to the “special” shoe closet ~ anything over a few hundred dollars specially bought or saved to be reused on shoots gets locked in here. Swoon giltall10.jpg

These are the less pricey counterparts waiting for shoots! giltall11.jpg

… and for the men… giltall12.jpg

… the jewelry that get’s locked up for accessorizing on shoots! giltall13.jpg

Prepped shoots are organized and ready to go… giltall14.jpg

Everything is organized in these cages! From props to products, it’s all in here, and everything has its place. giltall15.jpg

I loved seeing the prop furniture… in a cage… in front of a wall of shoes. giltall16.jpg

Trovata coats waiting for a sale date! giltall17.jpg

And then a SEA of clothes literally waiting for you to snatch them up when the clock strikes 12… noon… on the given sale date! giltall18.jpg

Endless rows of shoes waiting for sale… giltall19.jpg

Tops and more… giltall20.jpg

Even MORE clothes… giltall21.jpg

There was a definite eerie fascination wandering the stacks… so curious what treasures lie hidden in the many boxes. giltall22.jpg

Then the BOXING! Once they pull your order together, it comes to the boxing station… giltall23.jpg

… where they fold and package up your order in those signature printed boxes… dropping in the little faux handwritten note and all… giltall24.jpg

giltall25.jpg

AND OFF THEY GO! To end up at your doorstep in no time!

And as you saw in the sneak peek at Love Moschino post… here’s another shoot in progress… giltall26.jpg

In another part of the warehouse, there’s a Home shoot being set up for bedding… but they are ready for anything with fireplace sets, xmas trees, the works! giltall27.jpg

Love that there’s even some fun art that has snuck on to the columns! giltall28.jpg

Curious where your calls go when you contact customer service? To these guys! giltall30.jpg

Being pretty far out in the navy yard, they have a festive lunch room with catered meals! Love that they mix up their caterers as much as their freelancers, always keeping things fresh, Adorable that they even have hand written menus! It really feels lie a fun family of a crew in the warehouse, and so much creativity and fast paced organized chaos surrounding you at all times! giltall32.jpg

And just for security, upon exit from the warehouse, everyone has to press the button… and it randomly decides whether you get searched! So no stealing goodies out of the warehouse… unless you’re feeling really lucky i suppose….. giltall31.jpg

phew are you as exhausted as i am? It was quite the trip seeing where my Gilt Groupe packages come from… and what it all goes through before it gets to me!

Inspiration: Peppermint

veerpmain.jpg Here’s the latest post in our Inspiration series! Sponsored by Veer.com ~ we get to have some fun and go image researching across the internet around random themes inspiring us at the moment.. and share what we find! This time i’m all about the red stripey goodness of the season.

I’ve seriously been on a peppermint/candy cane kick since it started getting chilly. On pattern’s that scream HOLIDAYS! to me ~ red and white stripes definitely do it. That and the super delicious limited edition Peppermint Mocha Kahlua that is just divine in hot chocolate on these brisk wintry days (ok fine, so it’s a bit wet and chilly here in LA ~ not snowing or anything)… So when hunting for some visual inspiration, my stomach took me to flickr where i promptly obsessed on smashed candy canes turning into sweet temptations… like peppermint bark! First one to grab me? That awesome pic up there by Erin and Ben… see more tempting inspirations i found on the next page… and even more as i moved on to Veer to see what visual red and white striped goodness i could find (housed in my album here!).

Samsung Tweet Wrap - 12.06.10

tweetwrap.jpg Ok i struggled for about 5 seconds on this one. I know, its been a heavily sponsored, brand happy holiday season. Between actual awesome sponsors supporting what we do here ~ and the many many giveaways and gift guides in progress… and Samsung is in fact one of (not to play favorites) our very awesome sponsors once again this season. But all of that aside, this was just awesome, and were it for any other random brand, i’d be posting it. So here it is!

Appropriately i found out about this little internet toy on Twitter ~ Samsung’s Boosted is bringing us all some Tweet Wrap ~ wrapping paper you can customize with your tweets (or any search you want) ~ and they will actually SEND you your wrapping paper ~ Free! (You can also order more, pay for speedy delivery, etc). Beyond the concept, the site and UI is fun, playful, colorful, and all around holiday happiness… besides, 8 bit video game styling and fun optical illusion filled textures can’t go wrong… so since there were only 65 of the 3000 free rolls when i just tried it, had to share. And screenshots of the nice UI on the next page.

This was one of about 10 shoots simultaneously happening ~ some are still life (shoes! jewelry! bedding!) others were women’s ~ even steaks were being prepped… Each shoot has their own styling/makeup set up, and most of their stylists are full time (not so easy to have someone just drop in and know what’s available in the prop rooms and closets in a moment’s notice! It is like flash styling on set.) The Photographers and Models are all freelance though, and none can work more than 2 days a week ~ the idea being that 2 days you get the perfect amount of work out of them (without burning out or getting restless), keep the site look and feel fresh, and the inspiration they come back with having other gigs (around the world as well as the city!) help take things to the next level in the Gilt world!

These shoots go FAST, like lightning fast… like when you look away the model is in a new outfit already! All equipment is Gilt owned ~ every photographer comes in and shoots tethered 5D MKII ~ the consistency is key with so much change. And see the racks below? Everything is for this one Love Moschino shoot, and they will go through all of that in a few MINUTES per outfit. giltmo3.jpg

As she steams and preps the clothes… giltmo4.jpg

… they are shooting away! giltmo5.jpg

… quick styling in between shots! giltmo6.jpg

… while the photographer and his team and going through pics to make sure they have the 3 shots they need. Front, back, detail… giltmo7.jpg

… once he gets the shot and all is good, move on! This is a detail shot in the making… giltmo8.jpg

Images from the shoot are uploaded to the main server, and by that night, they are ready for the retouchers! giltmo9.jpg

This is the retouching cave ~ just like each shoot is ONE photographer and ONE model ~ there is ONE retoucher who will be responsible for each sale. Again, have to admire the visual consistency that comes through their process… giltmo10.jpg

As the final images are ready to go, the merchandising team compares images to the ACTUAL clothes, just to make sure there are no discrepancies… giltall29.jpg

… and off to the site they go! To taunt and tease us all until the site launches! giltmo11.jpg

And TOMORROW, we can finally see how those shots came out at the Gilt Man Love Moschino Sale! giltmo12.jpg

As mind blowing as this internet paced 24/7 shooting schedule (they have shoots going almost constantly - a day and night shift!) what is even more fascinating is that they seldom know which sales will run certainly until 2 weeks in advance… shoots are happening almost exactly a week before actual sales go live… there is no room for error, and yet Gilt Groupe still manages to keep an impressive visual quality through the whole site and all of the sales. Yes, they have poked and prodded at EVERY piece being sold IN PERSON! And having watched it all in action, it suddenly all makes sense why often their shots are even better than the manufacturer’s pics! Anyhow, the adventure will continue tomorrow in a second post sharing my adventures running around the warehouse finding out where our packages come from after we order on Gilt Groupe !

Knit from heavy, premium grade Australian Merino, our sweater’s textile is finer, softer, more insulating, and more breathable than traditional wool. The fibers themselves are flame resistant and retain minimal odor.

tad5.jpg Artemis Hoodie: Made with premium grade Australian Merino wool, this textile is finer, softer, more insulating and more breathable than traditional wool. Our urban styled zip-up easily transitions to outdoor use, regulating temperature and retaining low odor during high levels of activity. Integrated thumb holes help keep your hands warm while in motion when using pockets is impractical. Body-contoured fit to flatter curves.

Fitness via Samsung TV Apps!

samsungfitness.jpg This sponsored post is brought to you by Samsung Electronics America - content is mine, and they are enabling me to do my thing! The amount and types of Apps available on Samsung Smart TVs vary depending on TV Technology and Model. Make sure to check www.samsung.com/apps to see a complete list of apps available on Samsung Smart TVs and which apps are available on specific models. The views expressed here are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of Samsung Electronics or its partners.Click Here

So i’m currently at Gramercy Park Hotel - actually just popped down 14 floors to their gym you see in the pic up there! Working out on the go is a challenge ~ and i’ve been ending up in a lot of conversations lately on how technology has helped/evolved the way we work out and find regularity in our schedules, especially while on the go ~ as well as many discussions about how apps and the internet on our TVs are changing our interactions in the living room. Combine the two, and when posed with a chance to explore the new Samsung TV Apps, it seemed only natural to see what’s available these days that can change the way we exercise. From literally using fitness apps, to streaming workout videos/dvds on youtube and netflix ~ from blasting pandora tunes to skypeing a trainer or a friend to work out with from just about ANYWHERE… take a peek at what i found!

workout3.jpg YouTube App - I think it’s safe to say you can find just about anything on YouTube ~ and that definitely cuts both good and bad. I won’t deny i found some freaky workout-like videos… but i also found a lot of pretty awesome ones showing you quick workouts, technique, and just about anything you can look for.

workout4.jpg Netflix App - stream workout DVDs instantly on the TV! You can probably keep mixing up workouts for a while with their selection ~ and the ones you start on the TV - you can continue while on the road streaming to your laptop too!

workout2.jpg Pandora App - allowing you to play music to fit your tastes - the same system you love on your computer, phones, etc now playing out of your TV! Fun way to find the perfect workout playlist without getting bored!

workout5.jpg Skype App - There’s something magical about how easily you can really connect with someone from afar now! Whether you skype a far away trainer or work out alnogside your best friend half way around the globe ~ the personal motivation you need can be right on screen!

workout1.jpg Here are some of the Workout Apps currently available - Power Breathing - Yoga Helper - Six Pack Pro - Do Squats

Lots of options, right? And i bet things will get even more interesting as people keep hacking up things like the Kinect ~ or as our phones and tvs and laptops talk more easily ~ or as we…. well, who knows! It’s fascinating to see how the user experiences evolve with all of this new tech!
