Sometimes you feel gimmicky...

choc-cab112.jpgChocolate + Red Wine... Chocolate ON Red Wine = this? It feels too gimmicky. But it is starting to appeal to my inner cravings as well. Interesting idea Luxist came across... Yum? But not sure how i feel about pour-pour-CHISEL? The choc-cabernet is by Goosecross Cellars from Napa Valley, CA. Here's Luxist's cute bit on them:

Chocolate and wine together, absolutely, but in the same bottle? Goosecross Cellars, a small winery in Napa has a unique packaging idea. They take their Goosecross cabernet or merlot and then cover the entire bottle in milk chocolate, dark chocolate or white chocolate. They deccorate the chocolate with designs, patterns and a label. Then they wrap it up in cellophane, bows and ribbons. The bottle costs $67. Pour a glass and then cut a bit off chocolate off the side—instant dessert.

Chocolate Shavings

Y317000013.jpgAs far as experiences go, this one has made my night. I wandered next door to Whole Foods in search of hot chocolate (even swiss miss would have done at this point)... and could only find this stuff... "Old World Drinking Chocolate" Hmmmm ok well gave it a shot. As i popped open the canister and was faced with these incredibly cute chocolate shavings (imagine perfect pencil shavings)... in DARK CHOCOLATE... popped a few in my mouth. Delicious... melted some in a pot with milk... the apt smells incredible. You need some. It is too much fun, and gorgeous, and the whole sensation of the little shavings and the scents are just an incredible experience. Lake Champlain Chocolates, VT.

MarieBelle

mariebelle.jpg
Friend gave me some of this incredible Aztec Hot Chocolate from Marie Belle for my birthday, and the combination of gorgeous packaging (something about that vibrant robin's egg blue and chocolate brown) and delicious chocolate mini drops that are irresistable. Upon visiting the website, i was also delighted to find the designer chocolates and fine china, with equally compelling illustrations and attention to detail. If the chocolates are even half as good as the imagery and hot chocolate, this might become a must stop next time i'm in NY.

De Lessio Bubble Wrap

bubblewrapmain.jpg
Bubble Wrap and chocolate lovers rejoice! Latest discovery in SF that i'm addicted to... De Lessio's Bubble Wrap Chocolate. It's incredible. Addictive. SO SO GOOD. Picked up slabs of the 72% Dark Chocolate with Peet's Espresso Beans, Bittersweet with Almond and Raisins, and Milk Chocolate with Peanut Butter. But visually its fascinating that it really does look like bubble wrap (with deflated bubbles)... the real question is... do they pour their chocolate on bubble wrap? is it some crazy mold? how does it work?

100% Chocolate

07.jpg100% Chocolate basically says it all... The Japanese interior design group Wonderwall created this amazing space in Tokyo in collaboration with the Groovisions (remember those screensavers from nissan in the start of notcot?)...

The theme is "Chef's Table in the Kitchen." The entire establishment is rendered as a chocolate kitchen, with a table placed within to accommodate invited guests. Covering one of the walls are 56 different types of chocolate blocks, tastefully placed in glass showcases.

This exquisite boutique food experience looks like quite the indulgence for all your senses. Wallpaper discussed its role in the evolution of choclatiers, and the new trend moving towards innovation in packaging, presentation, and "product development"... catering to a more design-literate audience. With a combination of idiosyncratic flavors (green tea? gin and tonic?) and ceilings of enormous cubes of imitation chocolate... and Groovisions clean funky graphics... who can't help but forget their woes for a few divine moments?

more images following... this post inspired by a need for some bliss, preferably in the form of quality dark chocolate mixed with playful classy visuals to tease my senses into oblivion.

The Cocoa Room

cocoaroom.jpgStumbled upon these beautiful colorful boxes of what looked like it could well be poupouri or confetti, but it turns out to be the playful sweets of The Cocoa Room. Their tagline is "Cool Chocolate, No Drama", personally, i'm not accustomed to chocolate being dramatic, but quite the opposite to most. None the less, i'm impressed by the packaging/design of these chocolates which come in a range of colors, and then mixed to create themed collections appropriate for Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, 4th of July, and other color coded holidays. Take this "Green Eclectic Dragee Mix" for example, it is an assortment of pistachios, almonds, and sunflower seeds all of which are coated in chocolate followed by a colorful candy coated shell. They remind me of M&M's, but the various sizes of the pieces with well chosen color palletes makes for a prettier playful selection.

Sexy Chocolates

newtree
New Tree Chocolates are gourmet Belgian goodness, which come in nice not too small sizes, with clean simple packaging... three to a nice little box (granted it does feel a little like hotel soap) - and in some unique flavors... My favorite so far is Vigor, had a box of these in the car, and the dark chocolate with coffee is the perfect pick me up right before a meeting... and freshly launched are Sexy and Blush - Sexy being dark chocolate with ginger which is supposed to be energizing... and Blush (can't wait to try some) is supposedly rejuvenating "Dark chocolate kissed by sumptuous cherries, a taste so sinful it will make you BLUSH. " Mmmmmmmm.

Evan Hecox - Chocolate Skateboards

hecoxDecks.jpg I've been a fan of Evan Hecox ever since my buddies in San Diego introduced me to his work a few years ago. I couldn't wait to get that rad clock at Target with his illustration on it. Now I'm loving this set of decks he did for Chocolate Skateboards... so crisp and clean. Check out his website for more of his work... I only wish there was more there to look at!

LA Love: Compartes Chocolate

compartes0.jpg

With neighbors doing construction on with two sides of our bedroom wall (it’s that time of year?) starting at 7am every day, i’ve certainly been a bit more of a grumpy zombie than i’d like to admit. BUT, luckily we’ve been trying to counteract all of that with field trips… and chocolate can never hurt! So the other day we popped over to Compartes! As fun as their wacky photocollaged chocolate bars boxes are individually (or in little clusters at stores) - a wall FULL of them is pretty mesmerizing… and bound to take your mind off anything else. And the black and white stripes inside their black and white bags are so fun to stare into! So we picked a few bars, a bunch of chocolate covered marshmallows and oreos as well as some dark cherry and strawberry clusters and headed home after construction to dive in. How can “Campfire S’mores” and “Let Them Eat Cake” and “Donuts & Coffee” chocolate bars not make you feel better?

Check out the delectable (and visual) inspiration on the next page!

Christmas Survival Chocolate

survivex.jpgSeeing as i'm pretty much lost in a state of continuous consumption with this holiday season - particularly thanks to the gift guides - it was nice to be gifted with this "Christmas Survival Chocolate" this morning... nothing like some playful graphic design to help you hang in there, and it doesn't hurt that its filled with chocolate! By New Zealand brand, Bloomberry, this line of playfully wrapped confections is quite cute ~ but the signage like figures on the xmas pack are definitely the best. Also loving that they designed nice wrappers for the interiors... see below.

In a limited edition of 500 pieces, 5 of them will include a magical “White Ticket” that can be redeemed for the non-edible gypsum sculpture in the exact same form as the Break Bar. The Chocolate Eames House

eames1.jpgFor their latest Design Issue, Canadian magazine The Block commissioned chocolatier Thomas Haas to replicate the now-iconic 1949 Eames House in CHOCOLATE! Funniest thing is that this house is right down the street, and i've probably driven by multiple times a day for years...

"This sweet miniature design mimics the original structure Charles and Ray Eames created as part of Arts & Architecture magazine's Case Study Houses program. The program asked prominent architects of the day to design affordable and cost-efficient homes as possible solutions to the post-WWII housing boom. The modernist Pacific Palisades home is a semi-prefab wonder; the airy steel-and-glass structure with its brightly coloured panels was built in just three days. The Block's modernist chocolate dollhouse took 30 hours to complete."

Check out the photos, The Block issue cover, and article (including Thomas Haas' Chocolate Shortbread Recipe)... perhaps it's inspiration for gingerbread house building this year?

Chocolat Factory

chocolatfactory1.jpg Mmmmm chocolate. Beautifully packaged chocolate. Dare i say the packaging is even nicer than the contents? SO, pictures of some of the Singapore Chocolat Factory stores have been circulating the web quite a bit ~ and when i ran into the one at Changi Airport, how could i not grab some for the 18 hour flight? Ok, well the chocolate rain (cocoa powder with the watering can spout) isn't easy for immediate consumption, its packaging was too fun not to show you... and of course they got all uppity and wouldn't let me take any pics in the store, so i guess it worked, i had to BUY the stuff instead!

Tiny bit of background? Read up more about this Spanish Chocalatier, Chocolat Factory on their site. But for the REALLY fun stuff? Check out the poster, packaging close ups, looks at the chocolate and more on the next page!

Vosges' Chocolate Vintage Steamer Trunk

trunk1.jpg On the most indulgent of chocolate gifts i’ve yet to come across… Vosges’ “Travel The World Through Chocolate Steamer Trunk” is quite the spectacle. Amazingly, every “vintage steamer trunk filled with every truffle, caramel, bonbon and comfort food in the Vosges Haut-Chocolat line. This grande gift was inspired by Katrina’s creative process and the Travel the World through Chocolate theme. Each vintage steamer trunk was hand selected by Katrina and includes notes and musings about her creative process and a map to plot your “travels” with each chocolate bite.” Insane, no? But can you imagine one of these appearing at your office? House? Party? Wow… see more close ups as well as a full listing of products included on the next page!

Walteria Living and WSPA

endangeredchocmain.jpgChocolate combined with beautifully sculpted animals AND proceeds to aid WSPA, the world society for the protection of animals? That fits what we're all about pretty perfectly. Walteria Living's Endangered Species Chocolates designed by Kathleen Walsh and Anita Mothersbaugh are part of their new HMS (her majesty's ship) Collection. Each box contains a Pygmy Hippopotamus, Mountain Gorilla, and Koala Bear. The series makes reference to consumption with an emphasis on conservation education. See close ups below for the incredible attention to detail in these chocolates, as much as i may love chocolate, these may just be too beautiful to consume.

Gift Guide: Easter Chocolates

EASTER2016.jpg

Wow - Happy March! Easter is nearly upon us… and with it come a barrage of bunnies, chicks, and chocolate! There are the childhood classics like Cadbury Creme Eggs and the Mini Eggs… and then there are all the other drugstore/supermarket options and variants… as well as all the overly ornate (and often HUGE) chocolate eggs… but i’m most curious about the modern and unique Easter Chocolate options available this year! Much like my Valentine’s Day 2016 Chocolate Gift Guide - while these CAN be gifts, i’m even more interested in the seasonal packaging and product designs! Take a look at how Easter 2016 is looking in the chocolate world on the next page!

p.s. If there are more you find or love that i’m missing - leave a comment!

Bompas & Parr's Chocolate Waterfall

chocofall000.jpg It seems i left london just a few days too early… luckily Justine was able to experience the wonka-esque waterfall of chocolate for us! Check out her adventures below…

Our friends Bompas & Parr are at it again, just in time for Easter. When I heard they were creating a five tonne chocolate waterfall in the middle of Whiteleys Shopping Centre in London, I had to check it out.

As I made my way to waterfall, I could smell the chocolate. It seemed surreal that what looked like a simple storefront could house a five tonne waterfall of chocolate, but the heady, overpowering scent of cocoa suggested we were in for a real treat… you won’t believe your eyes when you see the madness they set up (and the souvenir you get to bring home too!) ~ pictures and video on the next page!

Fru and Gu Review!

frugumain.jpgNOTCOT Note: I sent Justine (aka Rugenius) on a mission since she's living in the UK, to go buy some of these delicious Fru Puds and Gu Puds and take some pics and let me live vicariously through her... Here's what she's reported back, with pics!

Fru Puds and Gu Puds certainly know how to do packaging. It's hard not to pick them up at the market. In fact, I picked some within my first few weeks in the UK! It's hard to deny the sensuous chocolatey goodness advertised on that packaging....and I'm alway a sucker for a nice black matte. I think we started with chocolate mousse, the traditional. So when the order came in from NOTCOT to check out some more of their range, I was all too happy to oblige. I thought we should go for something a bit different though. So we went for the Gu chocolate pots and the Fru carrot cake bites. See all my pics of packaging, unboxing, and indulging below!

Gift Guide: Valentine's Day Chocolates

org.jpg

Mmmmm chocolate. It should come as no surprise that i love a good piece of chocolate… especially a beautifully wrapped or designed piece of deliciousness. A quick search for chocolate on NOTCOT.org brings up quite a bit - as does looking for chocolate on NOTCOT.com! Over the last 10 years, that’s a lot of chocolate.

Well Valentine’s Day is around the corner (or so marketers want us to think, since Christmas is over) - and since historically, chocolate and V-day go hand in hand - being one of the biggest chocolate selling holidays, that means loads of special packaging and chocolate offerings coming up every February. And it has already begun! I found so many Valentine’s 2016 chocolate specials, and have rounded up the most interesting (and delectable) ones in this roundup. From incredible box graphics, to chocolate frogs, lovebugs, oysters, champagne corks, cigars and more…

So whether you need to get started on ideas and planning early, or are just curious to see what i found researching chocolate tonight… see it all on the next page!

Delectable Delights

jin.pngChocolate, exotic brews, high tea in a divine little outdoor patio with great feng shui -- minimalistic fountain, very green relaxed environment... Hidden on Abbot Kinney in Venice Beach, Jin Patisserie sounded good in the reviews (Angeleno, LA Times, Lucky, Daily Candy, NY Times to name a few...). It looked amazing in the pictures.

You HAVE to try it. Had high tea there today, tried to do lunch, but as i wandered through and saw the desserts and scones and chocolates, had to have sweets. Although open since Sept 2003, i have only now come to experience this secret spot of Kristy Choo, Singaporean native/air hostess turned dessert designer, in person. The highlight about afternoon tea is that you get a sampler of savories and sweets (highlight being the sweet being minis of many of the mouth watering desserts they offer). We also tried a pot of the RYOKUCHA MIDORI:

The tea drunk by the Samurai. Being low in theine and Rich in vitamins C and E, it is fortifying without over stimulating the nerves. An ideal tea for physical and intellectual exercise, it has a fine robust, fresh flavour.

I have been feeling rather physical and intellectually excercised today. But that might also be the scones and that chocolate pyramid dessert mini... Jin Patisserie

Seersucker Candy Co for Bourbon Lovers

bourbons0.jpg

Mmmmmmm… good scotch and dark chocolate are a favorite pairing of mine. Bourbon and caramel is another delicious one. Now mix up a delicious soft bourbon caramel in a divine dark chocolate shell… shape it with facets and colorful splashes and gold? WOW. Especially good when it isn’t just any bourbon but - Belle Meade Sherry Cask Bourbon, Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, Weller Antique 107 Proof, and Bulleit Rye Whiskey. Seersucker Candy Co. and Olive & Sinclair have outdone themselves. Their new limited edition Bourbon Lover’s Collection is a terrible thing, simply because they are only making 100 factory exclusive boxes that you can’t order online! I wish i could send you all a box! It’s THAT good.

When i first noticed it on their instagram, it was so pretty and sounded so good i shared it on NOTCOT.org immediately. Then as we kept working on the Nashville house, being only a few blocks away from the Olive & Sinclair factory/store, I convinced Shawn to take a break with me to go get some! We joke that we picked the new house project in part because of its proximity to delicious chocolates and our favorite breakfast sandwich, but having tasted these new chocolate caramels, maybe it’s not really a joke? Take a peek at more details on the next page - and if you’re in Nashville, go get some!
