LV's War on Counterfeiting

murakamifake1.jpgLouis Vuitton is really fighting back against counterfeiting these days. Did you hear about how the IACC (International Anticounterfeiting Coalition), which includes brands like LV, Chanel, Abercrombie, etc, sponsored for-credit college classes on the issue? Where their PR folks were "teaching" alongside some professors? It seems to have caused quite a stir...

How about their little Canal St-eqsue set up outside the Brooklyn Museum of Art for the Murakami exhibit launch party? It is a fake set up of a fake bag seller that sells real bags. The concept itself made me laugh - and i was previously amused by the idea of putting a pop up store INSIDE the exhibit which makes it art, only its also a fully functioning store, but i think this tops it. Thank goodness for the internet allowing me to follow the linktrail from High Snobiety who got the information/pics from SuperTouch who got their pictures from the Flickr of Athlete Director, David Lam... see more of my favorites of his photos below. It is really quite a hilarious set up - notice the hand written labels below the paintings for $6000?

UPDATED - love the WWD article, "Fighting the Fakes: Louis Vuitton and Murakami Make a Show of It" on this as well!

Fendi 'Paint-Your-Own' Artist Baguette

fendidiy1.jpgWow. Fendi. "Artist Baguette", freshly launched for a mere $1300, a new stark white version of their classic - designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi in 1997 - in coated canvas? And it comes with 10 Pantone Universe markers! It sure looks like they are taking a page from the current trends with the vinyl toy blanks... or coloring books/placemats/other children oriented goodies. And in fact quite a few purse sites seem a bit appalled by the whole thing (Purse Blog, Bag Snob, etc)...

Anyhow, putting the pricetag aside, lets think about this from an arts perspective... there is a LOT of collaboration potential here. Can you imagine getting a few of these into the hands of some talented artists and toy designers, and letting them have their way with them? The potential to merge a fashionable classic accessory with art could have some very interesting results (which could also be a way to increase that initial investment, not to mention actually create an even more unique one of a kind designer clutch). So i must admit i'm tempted, although i might have to hold out till i can draw on my own Birkin... See many more images after the jump!

p.s.
It seems like this is one of those situations where packaging makes a world of difference... if it were presented as a gorgeous new white clutch and nothing more, would anyone dare take a sharpie to it? Or would the die hard fashionistas complain about the ridiculousness? And it's not *just* a white canvas bag, it still has all the detailed stylings of a classic Baguette, and additionally has a playfully multicolored cartoon-like lining!

UPDATE 03.13.08 - i walked by a Fendi store, and couldn't help myself, so went in and bothered them to show me the bag... that box is FAR bigger than i expected, and the bag is quite hideous... not nice to the touch at all... the coated canvas reminded me more of random art school creations than a designer bag.

Incase Messenger Bags

incasemessenger.jpg Flipping through the 2008 Incase catalog, these new Nylon Messenger Bags jumped out at me, and upon reading the details (see the catalog pages after the jump) i had to post it out of curiosity and intrigue. In two sizes (medium and large), both have a sleek yet textured look, weather resistant nylon and waterproofed lining, exterior weatherproof pocket and headphone port, topographic print lining, and i like how the edge goes up and around the clips... as well as a mysterious "plush faux-fur lining" (i wonder what that looks/feels like) to protect your goods. In the large model, there is even a removable notebook sleeve, removable hipsack (fanny pack?), interior bike pump tie down, and an "abrasion resistant skateboard attachment with molded skate bumpers". See more details and images after the jump!

It isn't easy finding a good subtle, rugged, stylish, black messenger bag. I've got quite the stash of them (from chrome to ordning & reda to random leather ones to timbuk2 to patagonia...), but it's been a while one has even really caught my attention.

James Jean + Prada

pradamain.jpgPrada. They've been grabbing my attention in every magazine lately with these illustration heavy images... (remember NotCouture #1478?) and while i'm still debating and mixed on the illustration on leather bag concept, i'm still loving the illustrations! So while checking out all of the Spring/Summer 08 collections and campaign, i couldn't help but share this incredible (HUGE like 17' x 200') wallpaper they have. Entitled Florid ~ Prada says it "represents the somewhat perverse intersection between Hieronymus Bosch and Aubrey Beardsley. The image depicts an intense landscape of man-eating flowers, dragons, hybrid creatures and eerie fairies." Above is one of my favorite sections of it... the full wallpaper, closeups, and images from the print campaign are after the jump!

UPDATE: Apologies for missing that this was the collaboration work of local LA artist James Jean, and that this wallpaper is hanging right in the Beverly Hills and Soho Epicenter stores sized at 17 x 200 feet! In my cold meds induced haze and excitement while being illustration/prada giddy, i'm terribly embarrassed for the slip up and really should know better than early morning posting! Forgive me? Also take a look at the second wallpaper on his site that isn't on Prada's.

Working Class Heroes Unfold

unfold1.jpgSneak peeks from the latest from the Working Class Heroes which will be available Feb 4th... introducing the Unfold laptop bag. This new "premium cognac leather"/"washed slate cotton canvas" combo will be perfectly filled with a 17" macbook pro, but when using a smaller laptop (macbook air?), it takes a cue from the trendy Foley and Corinna style city totes you can easily have it folded in half to more of a messenger bag proportion. With "comfy handles and a reinforced shoulder strap, the bag is also padded with a protective layer to keep whatever you carry safe". Its interior is a soft cotton lining with small leather logo. See more images of the Unfold after the jump!

Seem familiar? Working Class Heroes has been previously seen on NOTCOT and the gift guide due to my obsession with their brilliantly designed grey wool felt and leather laptop sleeves i have two of.

Porter's Reusable Bags

porterreusable.jpgSo we've been through quite a few reusable shopping bags here on NOTCOT, and now when i find new unique ones, i just can't seem to help myself. Latest interesting simplistic luxury variations come from Porter that was featured on HighSnobiety. Their replacement for the standard plastic bag-The Porter x Club King Shopping Bag in nylon (and it seems to have nylon lining layer as well, looks much like a baggu with flaps to secure things) and there is The Porter Grocery Tote replacing your paper bags, only this one is decked out in leather and cotton! And its as brown as your paper, but with a sky blue interior. Honestly i can't believe this is the 14th reusable shopping bag post... thanks dan implementing tagging and forcing me to start tagging things i can actually know that now... although of the nearly 2000 notcot.com posts, i've only tagged everything from 2007 so far, so 2 years to go when i have free time!

Puma Reality Bag

pumareality.jpgBrains + Shiny + Puma Urban Mobility + instant gallery thanks to the Serpentine for $1,400? This new collaborative Reality Bag project looks great. "The Reality Bag is an exciting new product, adapted from the PUMA Urban Mobility Edition Bag, which launched last season. The Reality Bag is designed to reflect the world inside and out through a clever use of innovative materials and design detail. To develop the concept of this original accessory, the Serpentine Gallery invited artist John Armleder to create its look and feel. Armleder also created the concept of the content and invited young artists to create artworks to go inside each of the 1000 Reality Bags. This makes The Reality Bag an original, multiple artwork containing original pieces by the artist himself and by invitees including John Trembley and Philippe Decreuzat. Many other artists will contribute books, DVDs, or anthologies, as Armleder plays with the idea of the bag as a portable gallery. The result is a truly individual work of art."

Beau Soleil Bag

beaubag.jpgOn more affordable designer options on green friendly reusable shopping bag options... Beau Soleil has stepped in with their new Beau Bag. "A stylish grocery sack! Price is affordable to entice people to help the environment without shelling out a lot of cash." It is $44 at ShopBop, $40 at Beau Soleil, and $25 (shipping in Jan) at El SueƱo Verde. The typography was nice and clean on this one, and its great that there are snap pockets on all sides (including inside!) for all those random magazines, packs of gum, keys, etc! ~ see below for closeups.

Respect Your Mother Tote

rym.jpgRespect Your Mother by Local Celebrity... as a t-shirt, this one sky rocketed around the celeb world in green and blue, and as trendy as some things can become, i've always had a soft spot for this design. Loved it secretly, but part of me would never wear it here in LA, maybe while abroad though! BUT, i just spotted that they now have a canvas tote bag with it, and simply had to add it to my pick of the moment for reusable shopping bag options... or for my laptop and other random "won't fit in purse" schlepping. Close up below, and expect this one to show up on the green gift guide to come!

Noon Solar

solarbag.jpgNoon Solar. Just in time for holiday wishlists... a line of solar bags that look great. I am currently debating whether to order the black Cortland Tote.... and they were smart enough to put the solar panel on one side so you can easily choose whether to face it outwards, or have it face your body and look like a sleek leather tote... well a tote with "entire exterior and interior constructed from Bavarian sourced, chrome-free, naturally tanned and dyed, full-grain cowhide leather and naturally dyed hemp cotton blend" to be precise. It looks like the perfect size for a 15" macbook pro... close ups below of the bags and the technology within... read more about the solar power and battery pack here. Also a great potential gift for the men in your life... their Logan Satchel in brown. Isn't it about time someone put solar panels to aethetically appealing use? (Yes, i'm thinking of you, ugly solar backpacks.)

C&M + AMT Reusable Shoppers

cmbags.jpgWhy, yes, this IS yet another option for your reusable grocery shopping bag collection. From one of our favorite designers, Alissia Melka Teichroew in collaboration with her husband, Jan Habraken (of WATdesign), and Charles and Marie come this line of canvas shoppers with bags printed on them... So far they have shown off pics of Blue Tote/Pink Clutch and Pink Tote/Blue Clutch, but they just gave us an exclusive sneak peek of the one that is coming in a few weeks... Caramel Tote/Silver Tote! Which certainly seems to be a fun one to shake up some of that supermarket check out monotony.

P.s. does Alissia sound familiar? That might be because you know her inside out martini glass and diamond rings we posted about earlier. And if you're needing some reminding or a quick catch up on the many reusable bag posts, see below.

Flip and Tumble

fipandtumble.jpgOk so when i get on a reusable bag trend... and try to stop... it's hard! Because now everyone who finds new reusable shopping bags is sending them over, and i just have to share one more with you. Kristopher Dukes just had these Flip and Tumble bags show up in her inbox, and seeing as they're not exactly couture... she's passed them on to add to my growing list of reusable options. From a design perspective i needed to post these because linhchi and i were just thinking the other day... wouldn't it be easiest just to have an attached pouch? just cram the whole bag in it? Like a Popple! And then here we have Flip and Tumble doing just that... they describe it as a sock ball... i think of it as a Popple bag. And for those who are either so old they forgot what a Popple is, or those *gasp* who are too young to know about them... i dug up an original 80's Popple advert on youtube that's embedded below for your viewing pleasure.

Method Give Greener

methodbag.jpgI know, i know, you must be near reusable bag overdose... but its EVERYWHERE. So since we've started, i'm just tracking them all when they seem interesting. Latest that got sent in (you can also see more and more reader finds in comments on the various posts as well as over at .org) ~ Method (yes the beautifully packaged, omop, etc guys) has gotten in on the action with their use of GiveGreener.com. You spend 20$ on Method Products, and you can write/email in to receive a free not so subtle tote... in fact they even say "Get Greener: BE SEEN BEING GREEN with method's reusable market tote". So is it really about saving the environment some waste, broadcasting that you're doing it, or both? Their version has been designed by "eco-lifestyle expert Danny Seo" ~ with playful retro typography ~ and 16 ways to look good and feel better on the back. It even zips up into a light blue pouch.

Corporate Re-Bags

newrebagmain.jpgI guess you could say i have a preoccupation with the state of reusable grocery bags, and while i was out tonight i couldn't help myself, and gave in and purchased a 99 cent Target zip up bag, as well as the new insulated Whole Foods bag for $2.99. Also thrown in for comparison is the standard Whole Foods 99 cent bag (the matching version at target was around $1.49 i think - and i've also seen variations of these same ones from various grocers). The other one from the same manufacturer that i have at home is the 6 wine bottle version (basically the standard with braces to hold your bottles apart). So, from a shoppers perspective it looks like Green Bag has got quite a hold on the corporate reusable shopping bag market. And they are great! Just not quite as pocketable as the Baggus and Envirosax we were discussing earlier. One of the nicest things about these other than the super reasonable price points ~ these are the reusable's equivalent to a standard paperbag ~ a bit sturdier, and love that they have a plastic insert to keep the bottoms strong. These are great in the back of my car and for odd shaped items. As for the target one, i couldn't resist the adorable bird on a target tree design they had. Isn't it cute? And the tag reads: Reusable Shopping Bag "Reuse to Reduce". Due to the zip up nature of the bag, no sturdy flat bottom for this one, and not quite tiny enough i'd want to keep it in my purse.

An observation on the difference of the corporate check out culture between Target and Whole Foods. When i was at Target and purchasing the bag, she just throws it into a PLASTIC bag and hands it all to me... doesn't even think to put my stuff in the bag. When at Whole Foods, the insulated bag i was buying was in the cart... and she asks me whether i brought my own, or i'm buying that one ~ and proceeds to load my groceries into my reusable bags. [I'd link you to places to purchase these online, but i can't find links!]

Reusable Bag Review

baggumain.jpgOk with all these reusable bags floating around... from designer ones to simple ones to crazy patterned ones... here's a quick little review from what all of us at NOTCOT have learned so far... and what we love, and don't love... when we use them, and when we don't. Would love to hear what you do with them as well, and what kinds of things drive you nuts about them. Because with a simple project brief like "design a new superusable reusable grocery bag"... it seems strange that most of the solutions seem like nylon versions of things from the past. What advances could we add to them? What little details would you love to see in a reusable grocery bag? Are reusable grocery bags the new t-shirt? The next thing everyone needs a drawer full of ~ in every color and design for every mood and occasion?

Baggu Bags

bagguing.jpgBaggu Bags. These clean simple bags sure are getting popular lately! They've been on most of the design/trend blogs, and we've even had them on NotCouture when we first launched - they are #478. Dan and i had the pleasure of having coffee with founder Emily Sugihara last week (she's freshly relocated back to California, and is testing out the norcal lifestyle) ~ and we all got on so well it ended up being a few hour long "quick coffee"... she's an adorable, fascinating, fellow 24 year old ~ grew up in Del Mar ~ put in time at Parsons getting a masters in Fashion ~ interned with Proenza Schouler, worked at jcrew, bebe, etc... and then finally realized it was time for a change. So putting her keen fashion design skills to work on something a bit more everyday ~ she and her mother have taken on the reusable grocery bag market ~ not only helping make our grocery shopping a bit more clean and brand-free, but also help cut down on all the plastic we've been using ~ also she and i are on the same page that having a home/wherever you are office, is far more fun than a traditional day job!

I know, i've been ranting lately that there are SO MANY options, and it feels like people have suddenly "discovered" the concept of reusable bags... but these are pretty slick and understated (finally!)... and for the gents ~ her folding design actually does fit in a guys tight jean back pocket. So no more excuses for the non-purse toting ones. I have a hands on review/comparison post coming up next, but just wanted to let you guys know how fun our meeting was first!

Also ~ any interest if we were to team up and do some limited edition understated NOTCOT designed Baggus?

American Apparel Black Vinyl

amap.jpgLooks like American Apparel has started branching out on their bags... latest additions which nicely complement the nylon duffels (perfect lightweight gym/beach bags all summer, but not so great for screen printing... i tried a silver pirate bronto on my green one, its barely there anymore) ~ these bags now come in a sleek black vinyl. Perfect for fall/winter perhaps? Not sure how they feel in person ~ but intrigued by the images online... also doesn't vinyl tend to have a certain less than appealing scent often? Well they have a laptop bag, duffle, makeup bag and (shown below).

RE-BAG

rebag1.jpgRe-Bag is an exhibition of Limited Edition Reusable Canvas Bags designed by 15 leading UK designers running from Oct 5-11 at the Sea Gallery in London. "Designers responded to a brief to create an image for a bag on the theme of sustainability and reusability. The resulting bags not only promote this idea but are also in themselves an ecologically friendly alternative to the use of non-green materials in everyday packaging." Now, i'm sure by now you all know i have quite a soft spot for bags, in fact the whole team here does... and perhaps its less a soft spot and more of an obsession. BUT, that being said, i must tell you that i'm getting quite tired of all of these reusable bags that are specific to grocery shopping, etc... as if you really need yet another bag (other than the many in your closet which could probably hold groceries just as well)... as your dedicated grocery shopping bag? Anyhow, the "I'm not a plastic bag" atrocity has gotten far too much attention, and then every quick packing lightweight plastic grocery bag alternative... but now the need to collect and purchase even MORE bags? Doesn't it seem a bit ironic that we're still over consuming?

BUT that doesn't keep me from wanting some of these... very fun to see how designers took on the brief and created some really fun unexpected designs. Love the two sided purse images on that bag above... and the one below with the images of "Return. Power. Shift. Control" keys is quite cute as well. All bags are screenprinted white onto dark grey canvas (440mm X 387mm) and are produced in a limited edition of 250 of each design and a mere 15 pounds each. via Serif.

Burberry Studs

burberrymain.jpgI seem to have grown a certain morbid fascination with this Burberry Studded line... it started with the so called exclusive Knight Bag for Neiman Marcus' 100th anniversary (ok maybe i'm delusional, but it doesn't seem to be showing up there anymore) that was showing up on the main Burberry site as well... then it moved on to the umbrella i couldn't ignore with that ad in every fashion mag this month. And then i saw the actual bag over at Stanford Shopping Center (ghetto pearl pic below)... and tonight i just couldn't help myself and wandered across all the various Burberry country sites and found all the different products and images. But the real question is... does this not seem like studded version of "bling it on" taken to what should be high end goods? My gut reaction is that it is "as seen on tv" meets high fashion? Check out how odd that trench looks with the overstudding. And the shoes are painful. But the umbrella, why do i still want it so badly? It has that sleek black badass slightly punk image going on... yet its burberry. My inner preconceived branding biases are so conflicted on this one. Is this like when they tried to change from plaid to dots? and now they are trying the studs? Ok done ranting, i just don't get it.

Elettra in the City

elettra.jpg
I was browsing for bags (as usual) ~ and ended up on the Lamarthe Paris site, and beyond falling for their products, i also love their web design and the film on it! The layout of the whole site is based around an old hardcore (dust jacket and all) book, and you can flip through the pages of the various sections (more imagery below). The film is just too cute, and you must check it out ~ "Elettra in the City" is "A story that ends with the word handbag." by Zoe Cassavetes (actress, director, and producer - daughter of Gena Rolands and John Casavetes) and stars Elettra Rossellini-Weidemann (international top model and daughter of Isabella Rosellini and Jonathan Wiedemann). I love the voiceover ~ and if you flip to the script section, it really does feel like a 4th grade reader. More images of some of my favorite 'pages' below.

Also, i just love the idea of defining a film in one line by the word it ends with. Especially if that word is 'handbag'.

Camera Bag?

cambag.jpg
Question of the day i'm posing to all readers: What camera bag do you use for your dSLR? The reason i ask? I got a new lens for my "much overdue for an upgrade to the 40d" digi-rebel, and it got me hunting again for camera bags. What IS the nicest, most elegantly designed camera bag? I couldn't find any. I went through every camera store online, and then the brands official sites from there, and even trailed around through all the randomness on amazon. The nicest looking options really are going the messenger bag route which moves you away from screaming "there's a camera in here" slightly. But the issue i'm having is, i want the protection for the body and lens, but i dont want to have to sacrifice needing to schlep yet another bulky thing around (usually i've just been sticking it in whatever purses i have that it barely fits in). So i'm curious what you use or recommend?

My solution of the moment is my Botkier Bryant "Camera bag" Satchel. just wide enough to fit it nicely (as well as all the other contents of my purse, which usually include my smaller digicam and huge wallet, etc)... and i'm thinking of making a light foam insert for the bottom and around the lens. So i'm just curious, am i the only one who doesn't treat my dslr with the loving care i know it deserves and just sticks it in my purses? Isn't it about time someone designs some bags for those of us who take our camera everywhere with us, but don't want the hardcore photographer look? (I'm no photographer, but i do love taking the random snapshots at gallery openings and such for here) Ok i'm done griping... time for solutions!

Jana Feifer's latest line, Love Luggage Joint, made me smile today ~ you can choose various colors (black, white, brown, blue, etc) and which symbol you like (skull, crown, peace sign)... and how cute is that skull on the toiletry case and coin purse? Oh also watch out for the music, its just cute and retro enough to embed itself in your head.

Glaser Designs

glasermain.jpg
I think i may be getting hooked on a new magazine, and i haven't even see the print version yet... Conde Nast's Portfolio (so far it reminds me a bit content-wise of Monocle) - and i just discovered Glaser Designs in their article.

Glaser Designs produces leather and fabric bags which are handmade in their San Francisco Studio (yes, they are on my list of things to look into further next week) - as you can see from above the craftsmanship and design look incredible, and clean and classic. What REALLY drew me to these bags were the Insiders line of various organizational components... Laptop sleeve, adjustable modular holsters, wine organizers! Even folder holders, mesh organizers, and suitors that fit (see more images below). These components fit into their many bags, from the gorgeous leather duffel i'm craving above, to their more serious briefcases (see image below). And if you have specific requirements, they even do custom sizes - so you can have the exact combination you desire.

Puma Urban Mobility

pumaurbanmobility.jpg
Puma's Urban Mobility line... there's been much talk of the Urban Mobility Bike (folds up... i've included the collaborative short NSFW film PUMA and Ryan McGinley teamed up with the Serpentine Gallery on at the end of the post) as well as the limited edition Urban Mobility Bag (top left, whit bag with the wood bottom)... but i've heard little about the whole collection, OR the incredible website they've made around it (which is SO awesome, i need a separate post for it, coming next). So here are the products i'm in awe of currently... more or less everything integrating wood into the products: The roller is just incredibly sleek and gorgeous! The totes with the contrast of the wood paneling are just breath taking... and that wallet! OH, and the belt? It's airport friendly! No metal parts, so you can keep your pants up while you go through security! And that black sleeve for laptop accessories was just too pretty not to share as well.
