Water Bobble by Karim Rashid

bobble0.jpg Ok. I gave in today at A+R to the Karim Rashid Water Bobble Water Bottle… First thing to note… its a water bottler that filters your water through the cap… so put tap water, drinking fountain water, etc in there, and suck it out filtered! Also for color commitmentphobes… when you replace the filter, you really replace the whole cap. So swap colors every 2 months (or more frequently even!) to keep things fresh and delicious. Also, nothing you need more after a night out than a bottle of water next to your bed, so it’s definitely a good night to test this squishy bottle out! And honestly, it’s making tap water taste pretty good! BUT, the bottle is far softer than i expected, and you can’t exactly chug water out of this bottle since you really have to squeeze/suck it out and let it re-inflate a bit before the next round. Also, as you squeeze it, if you squeeze/suck it as hard as you can, it does start to create more creases in the bottle itself that you can feel in addition to the main seam. Biggest design flaw is it’s lack of a valve to let air back into the bottle easily… Though that is slightly annoying, on first impressions, it is definitely prettier in person than i expected from the pictures circulating online! … and new smaller and larger sizes coming out any day now too! See more pics on the next page!

p.s. i kind of wish the cap/filter would just fit on random water bottles or plastic bottles i have around… then you can just add the cap/filters to nearly anything!

Super Mini Angostura Bitters

bitters1.jpg Marcia (our Liqurious Editor!) is over at my house doing the photoshoot for her upcoming Cocktail book (more to come on that…) ~ and she brought me the most adorable present from her Tales of the Cocktail adventures in New Orleans! The teeny tiniest little 2” tall bottle of Angostura Bitters! It definitely reminds me of the little tabasco’s… so on adorable packaging scaled waaaaay down to a tiny glass bottle, check out more pics of it amongst the photoshoot bottles taking over my kitchen today!

p.s. Awesome email factoid that came in from Elywn - “Angostura uses an oversized label because when it was first started, the product was made in the Caribbean and the labels were printed in England. The labels arrived and were much bigger than the bottle….they had no alternative, so they stuck ‘em on - oversize and all….and the rest is history!!!” Ha!

Frankie's Tiki Room - Malekula Mug

frankies.jpg Frankie’s Tiki Room is definitely one of my favorite spots in Las Vegas - i’ve shown you pics of the place, the amazing SHAG Vice Tester machine, and some of my favorite mugs. Well they have a NEW one that is stunning! (Keep in mind they always have 8 signature drinks with matching mugs… and the mugs change over time!) Email just came in with this one saying “THE NEW MALEKULA TIKI MUG HAS ARRIVED! This striking new tiki mug, sculpted by reclusive artist Jack Churchill.” Isn’t it beautiful? Luckily, if you’re far from vegas, you can order it online… but really, it’s more fun to go get a drink out of in in person! And if you’re curious what a Malekula IS… see the next page…

p.s. they are open 24/7!

Dom Perignon x Andy Warhol Tribute

domwarhol1.jpg “With the creation of an exclusive collection of three bottles by the Design Laboratory at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art & Design, Dom Pérignon pays tribute to Andy Warhol, creative genius and one of the most illustrious artists of the 20th century.” Love press releases that start like that. Especially when followed by fun anecdotal excerpts from Warhol’s Diary! “Went to the gallery where they were having a little exhibition of the glittery Shoes, and had to do interviews and pics for the German newspaper and then we had to go back to the hotel and be picked up by the “2,000” people - it’s a club of twenty guys who got together and they’re going to buy 2,000 bottles of Dom Pérignon which they will put in a sealed room until the year 2,000 and then open it up and drink it and so the running joke is who will be around and who won’t…” This is an entry from Andy Warhol’s diary on March 8th, 1981. I can’t help but wonder what ever happened to those 2000 bottles… but it is pretty awesome that “Inspired by Warhol’s unconventional representation of icons, and the playful use of codes and colour in his work, Dom Pérignon commissioned the Design Laboratory at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art & Design to reinterpret its timeless bottle. The result is a unique collection of three bottles, each with its distinct label in red, blue or yellow, paying homage to Warhol’s iconic colour games.”

The bottles look stunning, that splash of colour definitely changes the presence of walking into a dinner party or hotel room carrying this dressed up bottle of Vintage 2002 Dom! Perhaps we should lock a few cases of these in a room till 2020 and throw a future NOTCOT party? These bottles should be available starting October 15th across the US! And until then, take a peek at the two really fun videos on the next page as well as more pics or the bottle and packaging!

p.s. there’s a part of me ~ so tempted to open up one of these boxes to frame as a random piece of art!

Absolut Art of Sharing Pitchers

absolutartofsharing1.jpg Today’s obsession? Absolut Art of Sharing Pitchers ~ after running across them on The World’s Best Ever i’ve been googling and ebaying and finding out whatever i can about them… but no one seems to know if they available in the US? What is it made of? This new summery art collaboration with Stephen J Powers and Chiho Aoshima results in 4 summery pitchers. I assume they are just plastic? Perhaps silk screened on? Have any of you seen them in person? Felt the quality of them? Art Collectors says - “From what we can tell, they’ve been released in various sizes for different markets (1Liter in US, 700ml in Europe/New Zealand, 750ml in Mexico)” and “So far, only 3/4 designs have been released in the 1L and 750ml sizes, so your best bet is to go for the 700ml set, which so far have hit a limited number of specialty stores in the UK, France, Belgium, and Greece.” See more pics and the video on the next page!

p.s. “The Art of Sharing” makes me think of being a little kid… and learning about how important it is to share!

p.p.s. Updated ~ just found an exclusive french design by Dan Tobin Smith - pictures added on next page.

Hennessy Very Special Flask Sleeve

hennessy1.jpg On interesting alcohol packaging related products… Hennessy just launched these limited edition Hennessy V.S. flask sleeves, a “first of its kind, protected by a silicon “skin” which can be found in a variety of vibrant, stylish colors including red, yellow, purple, and green.” When i first saw images of it, i wasn’t sure what to think, but once they sent one over it made a bit more sense, and the high quality silicon feels great in your hand. Nice touches with the Hennessy script forming in the inside texture ~ and the grape vine pattern of the label is echoed around the front of the sleeve. As soon as my dad saw it, he immediately thought the nice slip resistant grip was perfect for fishing trips, making you even more likely than before to resuse the Hennessy flask bottle in slippery situations. When you pull the top back, it pretty much looks like your flask is wearing a hoodie. Currently available in NY, NJ, RI, and CT, the will become available throughout the US through the summer. Take a peek at more images on the next page!

Absolut Brooklyn Launch

absolutbrooklynp0.jpg While in NY ~ popped out to DUMBO for the Absolut Brooklyn Launch Party with Spike Lee! Spectacular views on such an ominous night as the sun set through the on and off thunderstorms rolling through… They cleared out the Powerhouse Bookstore ~ and with the large altered seal on the windows, i must admit it reminded me of Starbucks at first. I suppose i’m just not quite used to their playing down the iconic bottle shape? They transformed the steps inside the space into a cute life sized stoop matching the one on the bottle! Perhaps the most visually intriguing are the water tower shirts the bar tenders wore with text and graphics creating the image! So for packaging design closeups, you can see my post here ~ To take a peek at the adventures with Absolut Brooklyn ~ see the next page!

Absolut Brooklyn

absbrook00.jpg Freshly sent over from Absolut, Absolut Brooklyn ~ a collaboration with Spike Lee, it has one of the most unique Absolut packaging changes… can you believe they Spike Lee’d the seal?!?! Adding glasses and baseball cap on Lars Olsson Smith! Additionally they have a line from Lemon Andersen’s spoken word poem “Somewhere in the world Brooklyn in da house and you know we won’t stop spreading love cause that’s our way.” on the bottle alongside the silk screened image of an illustrated Brooklyn Stoop, which is #165 as a nod to Spike Lee’s brownstone roots. As for the flavor ~ it is a Red Apple and Ginger flavor ~ “its flavor evokes the spice and vibrancy Brooklyn brings to the big apple”… it’s quite delicious, though a bit jolly rancherish… Take a peek at more details on the next page!

This is Design Week.

milanlight.jpg As design week comes to a close, but not the trip (we’ve been hostages of the volcano), i’m still sorting and posting much of the fun stuff discovered this week! Here’s a favorite photo from Milano Salone del Mobile 2010 this 4am. Staring at it ~ Leo, who’s been amazing helping explore and cover design week with me, and i joked that in a way, this image epitomized the key elements of the design week chaos…

Milan Design Week = beautiful objects + flowing libations + a sea of humanity

"OWL" Wine Opener by Hagino Mitsunobu

bottleopener1.jpg On designer impulse buys this week ~ the last place i expected to buy a matte black silicone painted japanese wine opener… was when popping over to check out the Bottega Veneta Home collection opening reception in their pop-up shop… But there it was, amongst a series of irresistible black metal minimalist beautiful pieces i had to talk myself out of, until i ended up with simply this “OWL” Wine Opener by Hagino Mitsunobu… the inner spike within the coil is lovely! I’m quite smitten by it, and as i write this post, i finally just tried it out! (It’s been a busy week!) In addition to the many closeups, unboxing pics, in action pics and more on the next page… also take a peek at the other pieces from the collection i was tempted by on the next page…

Veuve Clicquot Milano 2010

veuvesalone1.jpg Ahhh, Veuve Cliquot ~ they’ve become one of my design week staples around the world ~ that shade of Veuve yellow is starting to feel synonymous with inspiration, i guess they’ve trained me well! For the salone 2010, they’ve launched two new designer collaborations in their Clicquotsphere. The first is The Tasting Gloriette with the Campana Brothers (a playful modern twist on the gazebo of sorts, using coiled thin metal to mimick and overgrowth of champagne vines on a bent wood base… resulting burning man yurt style contraption to relax under and a central nest cradling a champagne bucket). The second is “Once Upon A Dream” by Mathieu Lehanneur ~ a retro futuristic looking bed ~ that is SO much more than a bed. It’s more of a luxury sleep experience created to help you get the best rest physically possible, optimized for jetlag recovery ~ through special lighting, white noise balancing, ideal temperatures, and curtains to create that womb like effect… there is even a plant hanging beside you which is used to control the lighting (coolest living light switch?) ~ and its even designed in conjunction with sleep scientists! Sadly, the best sleep is apparently alone, so this bed is just for resting! Both of these pieces will be installed in the Veuve Clicquot Hotel du Marc which is opening in spring 2011 (and it’s not a hotel at all, so much as their super guest house in Reims)… and in full Veuve Clicquot fashion ~ the champagne never stopped, the music was fun, the food was delicious, and they had unexpected surprises like keys you could try your luck to unlocking prizes… and even a special mailbox where you could write postcards which they will mail from Reims! See lots of pics on the next page…

Bompas & Parr's Campari Gas

camparigas1.jpg Wow. The Jellymongers, Bompas & Parr (If they sound familiar to you, maybe you remember some of their culinary artistry on NOTCOT.org ~ from glow in the dark jelly, to jelly architecture ~ to giant punch bowl parties!) surprised me with an email saying:

If you are in Milan, we are doing the opening party on Tuesday night at the Villa Realle with Fergus Henderson. We are doing aperitivo three ways 1. Straight drink 2. Solid form - alcoholic jellies moulded like italian design classics 3. Gas - a vast breathable cloud of Campari. It is going to rock.

And then suddenly i HAD to make sure no matter what happened with all the other events tonight, that i ended up over at Tutti a Tavola’s opening party, because “a vast breathable cloud of Campari”! SO, unfortunately i made it over too late to partake in the aperitivo with jello shots molded into espresso glasses, espresso makers and campari bottles… but i did get to play in a gas chamber of Campari goodness, twice! It’s an incredible sensation you certainly have to try at least once! Also, it makes for some really cool dramatically creepy pictures… only thing that would have topped it off? Having ingo maurer’s campari lamp suspended in the center of the gas chamber. See the fun pics on the next page!

Glass Bull Gold Liqueur

goldbull2.jpg Also discovered hidden in the same glass cabinet with the illustrated cocktail glassware… this hand blown glass dutch bull filled with Fortune Teller Gold Liqueur, complete with a cigar band like label! Something about it’s face reminds me of Mumin… and at first it looked like it might be a pipe! Vintage Cocktail Glass Set

glasses4.jpg Currently in Singapore, taking care of a few family matters ~ so i’m supposed to be semi-on-vacation, but that never works so well! Something or other always seems to get me too excited not to share with you! While taking a peek at some of my grandparents treasures, i came across these awesome sets of vintage glasses ~ two sets, each with 6 little glasses and 1 larger tumbler… and they have the cutest illustrations and classic cocktail recipes on them! With men in top hats wearing sandwich boards, you can see the recipes for Stingers, Manhattans, Sidecars, Whiskey Sours, Martinis, and Daquiris! StarChefs' Rising Stars Revue

jacksonpostcard.jpg The latest in the Dear NOTCOT guest posts… here’s one from my old friend, Jackson Stakeman, who just might become our food editor… if we’re lucky! He was kind enough to help attend what sounds like a delicious event, and being a professional photographer AND food connoisseur, his pics are looking awesomely scrumptious!

Laid out underneath the enormous iconic tree of the Santa Monica Fairmont Hotel, StarChefs held its annual Rising Stars Revue. Tables were laid out in a massive ring, and there was fabulous food and drink in all directions. Being there an hour just before sunset, there was a lot of running around trying to photograph everything before losing the perfect light.

The food was fantastic, these rising stars were picked for a good reason, there was lots of amazing tastes, and fun playful ideas as you went table to table. The surprising and minimalist cube sculpture above is actually Jordan Kahn’s violet sauce topped white chocolate cube filled with cream a sponge cake served on a white kitchen tile. Equally amazing was having the chance to experience such a variety of dishes and drink pairings all in one event. It was also a great opportunity to watch many of this year’s rising star chefs prepare these delicacies before my eyes.

Culinary interests aside, the plates were also especially NOTCOT worthy. All of the 13,000 plates were provided by Verterra, whose compostable disposable dinnerware are not only beautiful, but made from fallen leaves!

Ready to dive in to see my favorite dishes of the night? There are plenty more courses on the next page…

Oakley HQ: The Secret Bar

er2.jpg Ok, so i have been calling One Icon, Foothill Ranch - Oakley HQ, but part of me feels like i should be calling it Oakley’s Secret Lair. or Oakley’s real life video game set of a compound (it’s very steampunk industrial massiveness)… or… yea, you get the idea. And since its friday, and closing in on Happy Hour in my time zone… next up i had to show you their SECRET BAR!!! Seriously, its behind a secret panel, in a secret location, that i promised not to share… so long as they let me show you some of the awesome lustworthy details of their bar… like the Marais stools i loved (which so happen to be on sale at DWR today)… the floor plan of the Secret Lair etched into the glass table… the walls covered in signatures and notes of what i imagine are Oakley folks and friends… their amazingly design taps (made by Oakley designers of course)… SO ~ if you happen to find your way over to Oakley, see if you’re lucky enough to go have a drink in their inner sanctum… the ER. Or perhaps you can have a top secret meeting in there, amongst the buzz and humm…. oh, i’ve said too much. Good luck finding it! See the few pics i got permission to share on the next page…

High Snobiety + Selectism Coasters

highsnob1.jpg On posts that are a bit overdue ~ catching up while curled up in London right now ~ one of the sweetest packages came over from the boys of High Snobiety and Selectism ~ super fun letterpressed coasters! Nickel and Nickel Winery

nickel.jpg During the #time4wine tweetfest up in Napa this weekend ~ Julie and Jonathan brought me to their Nickel and Nickel Single Vineyard Wines open house… at first i questioned whether i wanted to be up at 9 after a full day of travel and tastings to go to another tasting… essentially, for breakfast! But those two know their stuff… and thus begins my new fascination with wooden wine boxes! Of all of the ones i’ve seen (and the wines i tasted this weekend) ~ Nickel and Nickel’s are my favorite. Also their stunning barn gone mod is beautiful! I couldn’t stop staring up at the beams ~ and the way they’ve carved out a lab within the space. The juxtaposition of sterile meets rustic is stunning. So take a peek at their attention to detail through every visual element of their brand on the next page…

(quick aside: Truffle Tremor. Awesome name, delicious cheese.)

Wine ~ MENU Style

menu0.jpg Who knew wine in a bag could be so… designer? functional? pretty? Or that a decanter could aerate and feed the wine right back into the bottle? Leave it to Danish company MENU to help us rethink the way we interact with our wine! I love the the Wine Breather Carafe ~ which can be used either by attaching it to the bottle, and flipping it… then flipping it back into the bottle, OR serving it out of the carafe. It’s designed by Norm, idea and patent by Peter Orsig. (Doesn’t the shape remind you of those adorable Aladdin sake bottles?) Also fun is the Baggy Wine Coat designed by Jakob Wagner ~ wine in a bag never looked so ruggedly high tech. Also cute in the new collection ~ Norm’s stackable, spherical, tripod set for condiments! So playful, they’d be delightful in a restaurant! Take a peek at all of these up close on the next page!
