KitchenAid: A Culinary Odyssey

odd-main.jpg The latest from our London-based editor, Justine Aw.

This evening I had the pleasure of attending “A Culinary Odyssey” with Bompas & Parr and KitchenAid to celebrate the launch of the new KitchenAid 6.9L Artisan Stand Mixer. The event was filled with science fiction inspired cocktails from the Experimental Cocktail Club (ECC), Kubrick inspired sets created by designer and prop stylist Rhea Thierstein, a levitating food device from Poietic Studio and futuristic menu created by Andrew Stellitano. Bioluminescent lollipops, a rum cola cloud chamber and cricket pasta were only a few of the incredible offerings. See lots of photos on the next page!

Kitchit Dinner in LA

kitch0.jpg Just in from our Tasteologie editor, Jackson Stakeman, he got a taste of Kitchit, the new bespoke chef service that just expanded to Los Angeles (from SF) today. Here’s what he learned (and ate!)…

I’ve learned some things recently… dinner parties are hard. Eating and hanging out with friends is easy. The view off the roof of a condominium on Ocean Ave in Santa Monica is amazing. Especially at sunset. Having a Top Chef All Star (in this case, Marcel Vigneron) prepare you and your friends a private dinner is even more so. Kitchit, a new company which offers new ways of connecting diners with chefs, has just reached Los Angeles. They invited me up to the roof for a little get together in order to have a taste and to take a peak at what they’ve been up to.

Kitchit uses the power of the internet to illuminate the often murky world of catering and private chefs. It offers an alternative to socialite word of mouth, sketchy business cards, and random internet searches. Hosts can select from a wide variety of chefs, including some well known culinary celebrities, and book a private dinner as if they were ordering it off the internet… which they are. You can even use the site to split the bill amongst your guests. Take a peek at the adventure through pictures on the next page…

Hatsune Miku in LA

miku0.jpg Toyota invited me tonight to Hatsune Miku’s Los Angeles concert. (It sold out in 2 hours?) Apparently it’s “her” first time outside of Asia and this j-pop 3D holograph superstar has been rumored to be like the next Gaga… how could i say no to this experience to see if vocaloids could take over?

Well, first impressions. I thought she was bigger. Rumors were floating around that she’d be 20ft tall! She was little asian girl sized it seemed. And she felt like a 3D holo-mime in a big screen/box on stage (particularly when she pounded her fists forwards). And things really looked best when you stared at the giant screens that perfectly captured/optimized her 3D look (aka, you might be better off watching the official vids of concerts online). Though i must say the crowd’s energy was something else ~ while everyone was seated (it felt as if we were watching her amazing band play behind a cartoon) ~ there was non stop high pitched screaming ~ and there weren’t nearly as many young girls as i would have expected in the audience. And everyone seemed to know exactly what to do with the glow sticks ~ waving them in sync with certain wrist actions at just the right moments. So, honestly, the hype had me hoping for more, but my curiosity about the tech and real life experience had me fascinated. Where this is heading is definitely curious ~ but Hatsune Miku definitely doesn’t have enough stage presence to pull me in quite yet… perhaps she should have interacted a bit more with humans during the dance numbers to really mix it all… her band members stayed in their respective spots all night. Take a peek at pics of how it felt to watch it in real life on the next page ~ as well as a vid from one of her other shows!

EyeO Festival 2011

eyeo0.jpg Through some random and spontaneous series of events, i have currently found myself hiding out in Minneapolis for the EyeO Festival - “eyeo brings together the most creative coders, designers and artists working today, and shaping tomorrow - expect an amazing three days of talks, labs, demos & events fueled by the people and tools that are transforming digital culture. converge to inspire.” Inspiring, right? Well even just as surprising and mesmerizing is the beautiful SPACE they are holding it in ~ the Univ of Minnesota’s McNamara Alumni Center… architecturally fascinating, as much as i try to focus and pay attention, can’t help but stare up every which way… the materials, facets, colors… anyhow, take a peek into the space on the next page as i try to pay better attention in this awesome “Session: Design I/O - Playful Spaces and Generative Design” talk by Emily Gobeille and Theo Watson. More to come…

UPDATE: the badges, maps, posters are by Erik Brandt aka Typografika!

Ideas For Good: Day 1 Prototyping

ifg0.jpg YES. They are in fact up on a firetruck. Wow. What an inspiringly energetic day it’s been here in Pittsburgh in a huge Carnegie Mellon Robotics workspace ~ playing with Toyota, Deeplocal, Carnegie Mellon researchers, and the Toyota Ideas For Good winners. What they are trying to achieve this weekend is no easy feat ~ the artists/engineers/makers of Deeplocal promised (before even knowing which concepts the internet would vote to win) to take the 5 winning concepts from the Toyota Ideas For Good contest, where Toyota asked how you would use their vehicle technology in a unique way to “do good,” and along with the winners themselves, turn them all in to working prototypes during the weekend. This would be a challenge even without the time limit… but now add on the frenetic circus of 3 camera crews, media, agency folks, and MORE circulating and flitting about throughout the process! Being part of that chaos watching in fascination, i spent the day trying to stay out of the ways of the engineers and camera crews ~ focusing on the great energy and capturing my view of the impressive productivity everywhere i turned… Inevitably, staying out of the camera crew’s way meant a new found fascination with watching and capturing how they work as well!

Ready for a sneak peek at the progress that has been made? And the reality TV like setting of the weekend? From impressive rubberband/plexi/wood ipad keyboards ~ to a FIRETRUCK ~ to a cute mod shelter that will be cooked in tomorrow… check it out on the next page!

Jaguar C-X75 Concept Car

jag.jpg Just in from the UK ~ Justine just checked out Clerkenwell Design Week!

One of the highlights of Clerkenwell Design Week is Jaguar’s C-X75 concept car. Jaguar will produce 250 of the striking hybrid supercars in association with Williams F1. As for design inspiration - “The C-X75’s designers found inspiration in the innovative engineering and functional design elements of cars like the 1950s C-Type and D-Type racers and unique 1966 XJ13 Le Mans prototype.” Additionally it’s leather is sourced from the Scottish Bridge of Weir, one of the most environmentally efficient leather producers in the world… and up to 50% of the C-X75’s structure is made of recycled aluminium! Stunning, right? Especially in contrast to the old industrial, woody setting of the Farmiloe Building that was once home of Victorian lead and glass merchants! Despite how much the display tries pull you in to photograph it, it’s pretty irresistible. But enough talk, more photos after the jump!

Bompas & Parr's Chocolate Waterfall

chocofall000.jpg It seems i left london just a few days too early… luckily Justine was able to experience the wonka-esque waterfall of chocolate for us! Check out her adventures below…

Our friends Bompas & Parr are at it again, just in time for Easter. When I heard they were creating a five tonne chocolate waterfall in the middle of Whiteleys Shopping Centre in London, I had to check it out.

As I made my way to waterfall, I could smell the chocolate. It seemed surreal that what looked like a simple storefront could house a five tonne waterfall of chocolate, but the heady, overpowering scent of cocoa suggested we were in for a real treat… you won’t believe your eyes when you see the madness they set up (and the souvenir you get to bring home too!) ~ pictures and video on the next page!

Firefly Vodka Crawfish Boil

firefly0.jpg Yay for twitter ~ which introduced me to the folks at one of my favorite yummy vodkas, Firefly. On Saturday adventures, just joined them for a Hollywood crawfish bowl with Jackson, our Tasteologie Editor. It was my first! Delicious! And so fun! He took some awesome pics, so i’ll let him fill you in on everything… check out his post below!

The Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka people and their RV have come a long way. They’ve gone from just distilling a vodka made of Southern grown muscadine grapes to 7 varieties of artisanal flavored spirits. Just this spring they’ve worked their way out from South Carolina, down to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, through Austin for SXSW, through Arizona, and finally out to California. Despite the company’s base in Wadmalow Island, South Carolina it has strong Louisiana roots, so a crawfish boil at Five 0 Four in Hollywood is a perfect fit. It was a great afternoon spent getting to know Firefly, sipping sweet tea cocktails and sucking crawfish heads!

Firefly’s Sweet Tea Vodka is a wonderful combination. Talking to Scott Newitt, Firefly founder, I learned that its more than just a simple vodka infused tea… through a bit of chemistry magic it is a combination of both cane sugar sweetened tea and vodka without being watered down. Firefly is a passionate bunch. They fought to get legislation passed to make it legal to distill again in South Carolina. Now they are starting to work outside of the bottle and just last month they launched Firefly Records with a huge presence at SXSW. Come check out more of the deliciousness up close on the next page…

PERRIER-JOUËT: 200th Anniversary Party

pjparty0.jpg This weekend ~ to kick off spring and celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Boutique champagne house, Perrier-Jouët, they brought 200 people from around the globe to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts… what a beautiful space! Skip the red carpet for a Perrier-Jouët grassy green path… and upon entering, you encounter a mysterious box popped up in the center of the cavernous space covered in projections… and surrounded by flowing bubbly and black and white old hollywood glam Harcourt Studio photos specially commissioned for the gala showing important people and someone they are passing their legacy to, and the Daniel Arsham limited edition piece to go with this concept. The surroundings were surreal to say the least, you must see a video on the next page of the projections from within, as well as all the lovely details!

Scott Campbell - Noblesse Oblige

mainwow.jpg Laser cut stacks of uncut money… into skull motifs… that is one QUICK way to grab my attention, and almost want to miss a flight to paris. Almost… thank goodness Linhchi was able to go check out the inaugural exhibition of the OH WOW Gallery, SCOTT CAMPBELL NOBLESSE OBLIGE. Scott Campbell has been much loved on NOTCOT over the years, from tattoo artist, to laser artist, to beautiful collaborations with laser cut leather for Louis Vuitton… and to my favorite, his work with laser cut stacks of uncut sheets of US currency. And this time there is even tattoo inspired art inside ostrich egg shells and burning images into stacks of money…Take a peek into the show and the lush green gallery on the next page!

Jun Ga Young's 'Whistling Sea' at Kinectica 2011

switch.jpg Armed with her camera, Justine checked out the Kinetica Art Fair for us, and found some inspiring and fun art pieces i’m loving! Here’s what she had to say about it…

Jun Ga Young’s ‘Whistling Sea’ is another incredible piece at the 2011 Kinetica Art Fair which consisted of hanji paper, creating a sea of colours and hues, which change sometimes calmly and at other times rapidly along with the music. There’s something magical watching it in action, so take a peek at the videos on the next page!

Installation 7: Scion Art Tour

installation1.jpg Beautiful opening tonight to kick off the 2011 series of exhibitions at the Scion Artspace LA in Culver City. First show of the season Installation 7: Video - (video trailer here) Challenging 10 artists to create 2-8min non-narrative video pieces, you can see some amazing original work from Franki Chan, David Choe, Cheryl Dunn, Gluekit, Matt Goldman, Cody Hudson & Jared Eberhardt, The London Police, Mackie Osborne, Souther Salazar and SSUR. If you’re in the area, definitely worth experiencing them in person ~ if not in LA, the tour is heading to Brooklyn end of March, Wichita end of April, Minneapolis beginning of June, and ends in Austin in July. Openings like these are enjoyable on so many levels… viewing the pieces larger than life with sounds mixing (there are three projections in the main room), viewing them on tvs with headphones in the back, and watching people watch them in wonder. It truly must be experienced… and then photos of the experience almost become a whole other experience to share! So get over there if you can, and take a peek at my view on the experience on the next page… from fun text over gorgeous scenery to people being slapped while they wait in the shower to pachelbel’s canon, to those crazy huge promotional balloon beings… you’ll see what i mean on the next page.

Absolut + Cotton Candy Foie Gras Pops

foie1.jpg First things first, sorry i’ve been quiet. Bottom line, ferverish for a few days that ends up being strep - sucks. Combined with a bit of travel craziness, and right into Grammy parties in LA, i might have overextended a little this month… BUT loading up on antibiotics, chicken soup, coconut water, pudding, etc… and hopefully back to normal by tomorrow?

That being said ~ Cotton Candy Foie Gras Lollipops at The Bazaar at the SLS in Beverly Hills are always awesome. Especially when you have the guy there making them non stop, its mesmerizing. Popped by Primary Wave’s annual Pre-Grammy Party, this year celebrating their 5 Year Anniversary. On fun stuff to share, it was a great chance to try out the new Absolut Wild Tea (black tea + elderflower!) in some of their new cocktails… and being The Bazaar the food was of course molecular gastronomy goodness… and my favorites have always been their Cotton Candy Foie Gras Lollies and the dark chocolate covered pop rocks… so i couldn’t help taking lots of pics of the Lollipop guy set up outside at the party doing his thing! Check it all out on the next page!

Alex Posada 'The Particle' - Kinectica 2011

alexposadamain.jpg Armed with her camera, Justine checked out the Kinetica Art Fair for us, and found some inspiring and fun art pieces i’m loving! Here’s what she had to say about it…

The highlight of the 2011 Kinetica Art Fair for me was Alex Posada’s ‘The Particle’, which had me mesmerized. A spectacle of light and sound, a seemingly simple wire frame studded with lights came to life. Posada writes of his piece “Experimenting with colour, sound and movement, the continuous rotation, speed and light create visual effects that define the spatial structure of the object.” The exhibit has a further layer of complexity, the regulatory mechanism of the design is based on the haphazard decision-making manner, forming new models. This means that the structures cannot be anticipated, but instead evolve through continual iterations involving the viewer. You simply must check out more pics and videos on the next page!

Dianne Harris at the Kinetica Art Fair 2011

flourescent1.jpg Armed with her camera, Justine checked out the Kinetica Art Fair for us, and found some inspiring and fun art pieces i’m loving! Here’s what she had to say about it…

I discovered the work of Dianne Harris at the 2011 Kinetica Art Fair, where her Neon works Caduceus, E=MConsciousness2 and Eternally Yours were featured. Dianne’s work “aims to heighten and advance human potentiality and question the self-imposed limitations that serve to confine the very nature of our ideas, thoughts and being” and perfectly captured Kinetica Art Fair’s theme of Body, Brain and Consciousness. See more pictures on the next page!

The Macallan Albert Watson NYC Launch

watson1.jpg Oooh these 4am posts after afterparties are becoming a dangerous habit! But there’s just something more fun about sharing gorgeous experiences with you quickly while i’m still riding the wave of inspiration from the preceding hours.

Tonight was the NYC launch of The Macallan’s Masters of Photography second series, featuring stunning photographs by the renowned, Albert Watson. The series is a limited edition set of special Masters of Photography bottles of Macallan paired with platinum prints. While visiting the Macallan Estate a few months ago, they teased us with sneak peeks of the images… projected on the screen in a dark room, while sipping the limited edition deliciousness (i can’t even tell you how spectacular this particular blend is! Yum.) our jaws dropped as we begged them to let us seem them again. So months later, it is a delight to finally see the prints in their true form… and meet Albert Watson himself! (Our friends at Cool Hunting have a lovely interview with him about the series.)

This project follows the story of the casks… from the trees in spain as they become barrels and as barrels become filled with what is aged to become the scotch we know and love in Scotland… and it’s photographed through the eyes of a couple going on a romantic and adventurous roadtrip from spain to scotland. As fun as it is to see the models and mini, the images of nature, the wood as it gets transformed, and the FIRE, are truly breath taking! See all of the platinum print images on the Masters of Photography site.So before i embark on a little road trip with the Macallan in a few hours, i wanted to give you a peek at the launch event, the behind the scenes video, and more… see it all on the next page!

Oakley 3D Optics + Macallan 25 at CES

oakley3d1.jpg CES was a lot more relaxed this year when Friday night i hid out with Oakley’s 3D Optics Team and Macallan in a suite party and so many amazing friends popped by too… also the perfect way to get a relaxed, fun view of their new 3D glasses while sipping some delicious Macallan 25 (omg, so good) and also play with their ice balls… and the vegas views from up in the Aria were a gorgeous sparkling backdrop! And in between, i couldn’t help taking a bunch of silly pictures you’ll have to peek at on the next page!

Oh! And i learned a lot about the 3D glasses world too… i’ll admit at first i couldn’t understand why i needed some if i didn’t have a 3D tv, but imaging going to someone’s house who does have one (and not enough glasses for everyone) or bringing your own that are more comfortable, better optics (and definitely look better) than the ones in theaters? Also, who knows where those others have been??? Whether i’m ready to have a pair handy in my purse at all times remains to be seen… and imagine a sports bar looking like this? But i’m definitely warming up to the idea of having my own for when those 3D situations do pop up! Anyhow, back to the pics! See more pics of the view, the glasses, the Macallan, and more on the next page!

Kiehl's + KOONS + Momofuku

kiehls0.jpg On fun collaborations, last week Kiehl’s and Jeff Koons teamed up to launch the annual Holiday Creme de Corps: A Wonderland of Merry in NYC, and Anna went to go check it out for us. Highlight? Besides Koons in person? CRACK PIE BITES! Who knew they did these in mini form? Also, Cake Truffles - with sprinkles? Momofuku catered the event, and the food looks lovely (lots of pics on the next page!) Absolut Glimmer

gbottle0.jpg Who doesn’t love a perfectly glimmering glass bottle? Somewhere between a studded crystal bottle and a discoball lies this Absolut Glimmer limited edition bottle ~ this comes following the Absolut Disco, Absolut Masquerade and Absolut Rock Edition of the previous holiday seasons. i must say, it feels even better in person than you’d expect ~ and i love that this design is the actual glass forming the texture, not something overlayed on their classic bottle! They threw a launch dinner for the bottle in NYC, which the lovely Sean and Anna of Sub-Studio attended for us! And of course the event was all sparkles as well ~ from the chandeliers and candles lighting the bottles to the glittering skyline views across the Hudson River from the Chelsea Art Towers. Beautifully ornate plexiglass tree-like chandelier of Absolut Glimmer bottles constructed behind the bar ~ Simon Ford mixing deliciously complex cocktails! With edible flower garnishes, 8-10 ingredients and more… and to end the night, Cee-Lo performed… on a sparkly floor! So take a peek at their adventures, as well as some of my close up pics playing with the bottle that was waiting for me when i got home from the round the world adventures!

Volkswagen Eos Preview Night

vwPreviewNight.jpg It’s inevitably become car week here at NOTCOT, between global adventures with Mercedes-Benz ~ spending today at the LA Auto Show Press Events… and more! So while i was watching the unveiling of CLS 63 AMG and the Diavel, Linhchi hopped over to Volkswagen at the Audi design center right by the Santa Monica Airport. In addition to celebrating their 20th anniversary in California, there was a sneak peak of the new 2012 Volkswagen Eos.

The president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, Jonathan Browning, emphasized that VW is all about a balance of style/fun and function, a perfect fit for California. The new convertible Eos that was unveiled is currently the only hardtop convertible with a built-in sunroof. I guess it’s perfect for those moments when it’s too cold out to have the top down, but you still want to enjoy the SoCal sun? Check out pics from the event on the next page, from a VW car on the wall to dogs being carried to Gossip Girl cameos…
