HAPPY 5th ANNIVERSARY!!! To our incredible friends at the Thinkspace Gallery! Over the years, they have become one of my favorite LA galleries, launching so many artists i’ve fallen for! And on that note ~ you can take a peek at all of the pieces in the show online if you can’t make the opening tonight! My favorites from Audrey Kawasaki, Brian Viveros, and Camilla D’Errico are all on the next page! Take a peek! They are STUNNING! (And sadly sold already!)

“Cire Trudon, the oldest candle company in the world, is opening its very first shop outside its native Paris in New York’s Nolita neighborhood at 54 Bond Street at Bowery. This will be the first boutique to open since the Paris shop, located in the 6th arrondissement at 78 rue de Seine, opened in 1884.” That is quite a bit of history behind these amazing candles. While i have yet to smell them for myself, Anna was able to make it over to the opening to check it out first hand for us! For some reason there is something about a pouty Napoleon bust of a candle that just makes me smile. Also that the store makes you feel like you’re stepping into another world ~ in another time! Anna mentioned, “They put glass jars over the candles for display, which was a smart way to capture the smell and allow us to get a whiff without being totally overwhelmed by a million different scents in the store.” Take a first look into the stunning store on the next page ~ and perhaps soon i can show you some of their Stink Bombs that sound incredible… but more on that to come ~ to the next page!
An amazing and important art show occured in NYC this weekend ~ RE:FORM SCHOOL, a REDU Project! And luckily, while i couldn’t make it, Anna of Sub-Studio was willing to go check it out for us!!! And WOW! So many incredible pieces! With three floors of art, over 150 artists participating, and a mind blowing weekend of events… looks like it was quite the show ~ and brought together by the folks behind the incredible Manifest Equality and Manifest Hope. How do they describe it? “RE:FORM SCHOOL is a high profile group art exhibition, event series and public awareness campaign taking place in New York City, that brings together the creative community in a call for the reform of the American Public Education System.” Now… on to some of the many incredible pieces… see the next page!
Happy 10th Anniversary, Prius! As you saw in my “day in my life through pics” post of the 8 hour event yesterday Prius threw in Malibu’s Wright Organic Resource Center… the Outstanding In The Field dinner was an incredible site to behold ~ not to mention feast to enjoy! So as promised, here’s a closer look at the meal itself ~ from preparation to table design to the fun of the dinner itself! And of course… more looks at the dinner from afar as the sun set… it was just bubbling with everyone’s excited energy and conversation! Not to mention the wine that kept flowing courtesy of Whole Foods too! (Though half the group probably couldn’t drink, needing to navigate the way out of the twisty s-curves of the canyon!) So take a look at our Prius 10th Anniversary Outstanding In The Field dinner on the next page! Bon Appetit!
10.10.10 was the perfect day to celebrate 10 Years of Prius! Hosted by Toyota, along with Shift.com, WIRED Magazine, Outstanding In The Field, and Reverb ~ up on the Wright Organic Resource Center in the hills of Malibu, home of grandson of Frank Lloyd Wright, Eric Lloyd Wright - architect and founder of the center. Firstly, there couldn’t be a more stunning Los Angeles day ~ sun beaming, clear skies, and the s-curves up to the house were stunning… and at the center, being surrounded by mountains and the whole of Santa Monica bay to look down on… they set up a series of sustainability workshops, live music, talks, and the coup d’etat ~ a special Outstanding in the Field dinner (remember i wrote about them recently?) As you can imagine, with such a stunning celebration underway, i ended up with hundreds of pictures, all of which could easily become many a post… or one huge epic one… so here’s the plan. On the next page ~ check out the pictures for an overview ~ think of it as a day in the life… walking through 2-10pm with me! And i’ll have more to show you on the stunning Outstanding in the Field dinner HERE! Absolutely incredible day, so nice to have a beautiful day outside surrounded by the sea, the mountains, music, food, drink, tech, and great people ~ coming together to celebrate 10 years of the Prius! SO! If you’re ready… check it out on the next page!
When right in the center of downtown Los Angeles, and up on a tiny balcony of the 35th floor penthouse Logitech Loft ~ the city really sparkles at night! During the day ~ there was some secret TV show being filmed, with people repelling right past our windows down from the roof to the pool on the 7th floor… and helicopters buzzing the building from the half dozen helipads on nearby rooftops. Even got a chance to play around with the GoogleTV Logitech Revue early ~ as well as the Logitech peripherals - from the keyboard, mini clamshell keyboard, and video camera. But the occasion of the night? Logitech’s Ultimate Ears sponsored an intimate concert with Anberlin, as hosted by the winner of the Logitech Loft LA Contest - Rob Blasko (@roblahblah). Really the views blew my mind ~ and looking straight down was not for the vertigo afflicted… see more on the next page!
Sometimes the best art is locked away INSIDE TBWA\Chiat\Day! So, i’ve shown you their studios before, and you just saw their 5353 Music Art Fest ~ well, while i was there, popped inside again, and their latest internal art exhibit is awesome! Freerunning captured in action and printed larger than life all around their communal areas… only thing that could be cooler would be watching the LA based Team Tempest freerunners bouncing off the surfboard bar, gargoyle, fish tank, shipping containers and more!
And since i was a bit ignorant, just read up a bit on the difference between Freerunning and Parkour - according to wikipedia - “Parkour as a discipline emphasizes efficiency, whilst free running embodies complete freedom of movement — and includes many acrobatic maneuvers. Although the two are often physically similar, the mindsets of each are vastly different.” Watching some Tempest TV, it definitely look like an incredibly athletic art form that feels like urban tumbling/dancing at times! Mesmerizing to say the least ~ and apparently you check out Team Tempest at UCLA every saturdat at 11am!
For now ~ check out more pics of the exhibit up at TBWA\Chiat\Day on the next page!
p.s. UPDATE! The stunning photography in these prints are by people/dramatic sports photog, Andy Batt!
Such a fun way to spend the day before hopping on the LAX-CDG flight ~ TBWA\Chiat\LA 5353 Music Art Fest ~ an evolution of what was once a company wide picnic, this year TBWA\Chiat\Day threw a party in their parking lot celebrating their team, art, and music accompanied by food trucks (Kogi and Greasy Weiner) and an Ice Cream Sandwich Bar! The music was quite the line up with performances by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Fool’s Gold, Fitz and the Tantrums, and Local Natives. Then there was the art ~ nice idea to have an art show featuring non work pieces by TBWA\Chiat\Day employees, many of which don’t necessarily even work in the creative side! The beer was flowing, the dunk tank was splashing, the music was blasting, and everyone seemed to be having a great time as they popped in and out of the building ~ i guess the only downside (or upside?) to having this year’s event in the parking lot versus offsite, you can hang out AND still work at the same time! Huge thanks to the folks at TBWA\Chiat\Day for inviting me in, honored to have made the “friends of…” list! Check out the fun scene from the top of the parking garage, the giant chicken sculpture that farts bubbles, the pixelated bike, the burnt golf balls and more on the next page!
Amazing Bigfoot solo show, Ominous Compositions from the Magic Mountains at Hurley’s )( Space in Costa Mesa opened tonight. Wow. The mural, the smoking heads that greet you, the garage door mouth of a huge bigfoot… such amazing installations! And the wood pieces, where he manages to bring bigfoots out of the wood grain ~ mesmerizing! So many beautiful pieces by BIGFOOT who has been all over the skate, art, toy world the last decade ~ really fun to see it all up close and larger than life! As StrangeCo says, “his work depicts the conflict between respect for nature (held by the Bigfoot race) and the destructive agenda of humans.” Fun detail to look for? Jason Maloney, Hurley’s resident artist and friend of Bigfoot, even has a little snake snuck into the mural! See LOTS of pics of the show on the next page… and the gorgeous sunset too!
p.s. you can also check out a video with him interviewed by Maloney for Hurley here
This could easily be a post about amazing photographs of seemingly endless dinner tables trailing off into breathtakingly magnificent landscapes… in fact, i have a hard time just getting past the images you’ll see on the next page enough to tell you why, beyond the table imagery, Outstanding In The Field is SO spectacular! (Quick side note: How fun is their LOGO?) The main image above is at County Line Harvest, Petaluma, CA ~ the swing just makes me smile.
Ok, but moving beyond the beautiful images of endless tables… (You can see plenty more of that on the next page too!) A friend of mine was telling me about these a few months back, but i had forgotten the name, and just discovered the website tonight! Outstanding In The Field hosts incredible farm dinners, bringing together farmers, celebrated chefs, and eager diners alike. From humble beginnings of “farmers dinners” in Santa Cruz hosted by chef and artist (whose work you definitely know if you’re reading this!), Jim Denevan in the summer of 1998… which coupled with his brother, Bill, a “pioneering organic grower in California was one of those farmers that brought his ingredients and his story to the restaurant.”… evolved into dinners on the farm! Now, over a decade later it has grown into a series of traveling around the world hosting Farm Dinner events as well as private events. Are you hooked yet? I’m seriously bummed right now that the remaining Los Angeles dinners are sold out already… perhaps we will need to think about a NOTCOT private dinner? Let’s discuss that more in the comments though… for now ~ go fall in love with the images on the next page!
Much talk on twitter this morning about clones… especially of the mentally networked type… so i could be in multiple places around the globe at once! One of the recent moments i wish i could be in NY and LA at the same time (or actually, i suppose teleporting would be ok too) ~ when the email came in with subject line: “CHANEL J12 Marine invites you to Montauk for Fireside Cocktails - Aug 21st”
As if i wasn’t bummed enough not to go see it in person, the pictures came in this morning ~ and it was just too picturesque not to share! Something fun about the way they were shot, it looks like the matte black and white Chanel logo’d surf boards were the stars of the party… in addition to their new brand ambassador, and the new J12 Marine watches of course! “Like CHANEL’s newest brand ambassador, Laird Hamilton, CHANEL has allowed themselves to be swept away by the beauty of the waves, and has incorporated these elements into the design of the J12 Marine, the newest addition to CHANEL’s fine timepiece collection.” I have a fascination with watching brands and experiences you don’t expect merging beautifully to create a whole new experience… Chanel + Surfing? Definitely quite the contrast to the socal surf scene and the art/design i usually imagine coupled with it… But lovely in its own way! Take a peek on the next page of the dinner Chanel’s J12 Marine and Laird Hamilton hosted in honor of “The Wave” by Susan Casey to benefit the Surfrider Foundation…
p.s. the email with pictures said “…dined on fresh seafood at wooden tables and then gathered around the fire pit for cocktails and smores.” How lovely does that sound right now?
NY trips aren’t complete without a stop over to The Standard Hotel New York to catch up with everyone ~ right after the Absolut Brooklyn launch, popped over to finally see the pool on the 18th floor of The Standard Hotel New York in action ~ and WOW is it different compared to when empty in the day! Floor to ceiling black glossy tiles, a diamond shaped, large hot tub sized 4ft pool surrounded by endless NY views glittering in every direction. It’s incredible how the cave like darkness of the space is literally lit up by the NY skyline! For this night, a fun mix of internet week and lifestyle and travel industry folks ~ all coming together to celebrate the launch of location based members only site, TopGuest ~ “Topguest gives travelers real loyalty program points from top hotels and airlines for geo check-ins on all major applications, automatically.” Basically, it’s a membership program that will connect up your foursquare, gowalla, google buzz, yelp, twitter and more and sync it up with existing and upcoming partnership rewards from major hotels, airlines, and more. Fun potential with the concept, and i love that they are targeting carefully curated brands and experiences first ~ during the preview, their exclusive launch partner is the Standard Hotel group, and they’ve issued a challenge: check in to all 4 (NY, LA-downtown, LA-hollywood, Miami) Standard Hotels in a week to earn a free week stay! But first things first, you have GOT to check out the views from the glossy jet black Standard NY penthouse pool!
While in NY ~ popped out to DUMBO for the Absolut Brooklyn Launch Party with Spike Lee! Spectacular views on such an ominous night as the sun set through the on and off thunderstorms rolling through… They cleared out the Powerhouse Bookstore ~ and with the large altered seal on the windows, i must admit it reminded me of Starbucks at first. I suppose i’m just not quite used to their playing down the iconic bottle shape? They transformed the steps inside the space into a cute life sized stoop matching the one on the bottle! Perhaps the most visually intriguing are the water tower shirts the bar tenders wore with text and graphics creating the image! So for packaging design closeups, you can see my post here ~ To take a peek at the adventures with Absolut Brooklyn ~ see the next page!
It is amazing how good the plastic version of a steel design classic can feel… you have to sit/lift this new 111 Navy Chair is! The Emeco classic remade in a special formulation of rPET (Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate- recycled plastic bottles) mixed with glass fiber for strength ~ where each chair contains 111 recycled plastic Coke bottles! Apparently over the last 4 years ~ Coke instigated this project, challenging Emeco designers/manufacturers to adapt the chair. While this launched in milan (frozen in a block of ice! - see pic on next page!) ~ the launch party for it at DWR NY in the meatpacking had so many fun design details, as well as lots of the chairs to sit on and play with ~ the experience had to be shared! From recycled coke glass bottle tumblers filled with rum and coke and topped off with paper straws ~ to fun graphics on walls/male models in tees/port-a-potties/coasters/pins ~ to a photobooth! And adorable bags with the Eames quote “Take your pleasure seriously.” (Words i definitely live by for NOTCOT!)… so take a peek at all the fun on the next page!
While at 10 Corso Como ~ i really wish i had a pack of color pencils to take to the walls of Maison Martin Margiela’s pop up shoppable installation space that is covered in black and white color by number surfaces! All non-fashion lines of the Maison are displayed: home objects (line 13), fragrances (line 3), sunglasses (line 8) and jewellery pieces (line 12). Also memorable ~ the jewelry are all in safes behind paintings… which are all open! And of course, the creepy dolls eyes behind each pair of sunglasses… see lots of pics of the single room on the next page!
While rushing to a Molteni/Ferragamo event on Montenapoleone the other night (which was definitely a fire hazard with the number of people crammed in the store!) ~ i was pleasantly surprised and amused by the Citroën DS3 Design Driver ~ a huge red lamp serving as a lounge as you popped out at the Montenapoleone metro. A lamp that sized ~ wow ~ you just can’t help but smile when you see it!
According to FuoriSaloni - “The most refined heart of the city, Piazzetta Crocerossa, on the corner with Via Montenapoleone, will stage Citroën DS3 Design Driver, an original installation which will be used to unveil the latest creation to come out of the Citroën stable, the DS3, launched on the Italian market on the 21st of March. The installation bears the signature of the architect Fabio Rotella, whose aim was to create an “Open Air Living Room” where a six-metre-high lampshade covers and illuminates a lounge area… The large lampshade is reminiscent of the Venini lampshades hosted by Citroën in the lounge area as a valuable testimonial to a major name in Italian design. The unmistakable creations of the historic glass maker illuminate the exquisite chairs, recreating the atmosphere of an ideal lounge in which to meet and share ideas, projects and creativity.”
See more images of the stunning lamp on the next page!
There’s nothing that says comfort food ~ like walking down the street and smelling that fresh apple pie in the air… as we strolled through the new Milano Salone design area, Ventura Lambrate, suddenly there was the smell of apples baking wafting through the air… and adorable signs promising “fresh pies + coffee + hot butt” ~ the adorable team of Public Pie from the Netherlands was out making fresh little apple pies in muffin trays in one of the courtyards! And they looked so cute, i had to take some pics for you! (Sadly, we found it just after a huge lunch, so didn’t get a chance to taste!) Take a peek at the fun branding, pie making, and experience on the next page!
While on a bit of a travel bender, i was SO tempted to reroute myself home to LA for the Premiere of Banksy’s “Exit Through the Giftshop” at the stunning historic Los Angeles Theatre, but since teleportation has yet to be perfected, luckily awesome photographer friend of NOTCOT, Lou Mora and his assistant, Jack Wittbold, stepped up and offered to not only check out the premiere for us, but also take some stunning pics to show me what i missed! So take a look at this latest Dear NOTCOT ~ his pictures of people and the art especially blow me away! While i sent him mostly to take pictures of the artwork and installations happening around the film… here are a few quick comments i got from him:
“The crowd was definitely pumped and cheered throughout the movie. The venue was stunning. There were 4 installations. Alongside the red carpet you could grab some spray paint (from the girls dressed in red) and do whatever you wanted to either a box truck or limo. Second, there was an older gentleman with a black mask on playing piano. Third, was Tweetie bird in a cage. Tweeties eye would slowly open as you got closer to the cage. Really amazing and probably my favorite. Fourth, was the security pole w/ cameras at the top, which also acted as a strip pole for the cops. All the ushers and waitresses had black masks on so their identity would be hidden. I have a feeling Banksy was there somewhere. He’s has two brand new pieces here in LA that popped up yesterday morning so we all know he’s here.”
On to the images on the next page!
Wow. The Jellymongers, Bompas & Parr (If they sound familiar to you, maybe you remember some of their culinary artistry on NOTCOT.org ~ from glow in the dark jelly, to jelly architecture ~ to giant punch bowl parties!) surprised me with an email saying:
If you are in Milan, we are doing the opening party on Tuesday night at the Villa Realle with Fergus Henderson. We are doing aperitivo three ways 1. Straight drink 2. Solid form - alcoholic jellies moulded like italian design classics 3. Gas - a vast breathable cloud of Campari. It is going to rock.
And then suddenly i HAD to make sure no matter what happened with all the other events tonight, that i ended up over at Tutti a Tavola’s opening party, because “a vast breathable cloud of Campari”! SO, unfortunately i made it over too late to partake in the aperitivo with jello shots molded into espresso glasses, espresso makers and campari bottles… but i did get to play in a gas chamber of Campari goodness, twice! It’s an incredible sensation you certainly have to try at least once! Also, it makes for some really cool dramatically creepy pictures… only thing that would have topped it off? Having ingo maurer’s campari lamp suspended in the center of the gas chamber. See the fun pics on the next page!
The latest in the Dear NOTCOT guest posts… here’s one from my old friend, Jackson Stakeman, who just might become our food editor… if we’re lucky! He was kind enough to help attend what sounds like a delicious event, and being a professional photographer AND food connoisseur, his pics are looking awesomely scrumptious!
Laid out underneath the enormous iconic tree of the Santa Monica Fairmont Hotel, StarChefs held its annual Rising Stars Revue. Tables were laid out in a massive ring, and there was fabulous food and drink in all directions. Being there an hour just before sunset, there was a lot of running around trying to photograph everything before losing the perfect light.
The food was fantastic, these rising stars were picked for a good reason, there was lots of amazing tastes, and fun playful ideas as you went table to table. The surprising and minimalist cube sculpture above is actually Jordan Kahn’s violet sauce topped white chocolate cube filled with cream a sponge cake served on a white kitchen tile. Equally amazing was having the chance to experience such a variety of dishes and drink pairings all in one event. It was also a great opportunity to watch many of this year’s rising star chefs prepare these delicacies before my eyes.
Culinary interests aside, the plates were also especially NOTCOT worthy. All of the 13,000 plates were provided by Verterra, whose compostable disposable dinnerware are not only beautiful, but made from fallen leaves!
Ready to dive in to see my favorite dishes of the night? There are plenty more courses on the next page…
Popped by the Architizer launch party tonight at the A+D Museum (major work in progress going on across the street from LACMA) ~ and then the Cool Haus Ice Cream Truck came! And it was ice cream for dinner…Architectural ice cream! From Richard Meyer Lemon to Frank Behry and Rem “Coolhaus”… the imagery for the Cool Haus brand of architecturally inspired ice cream is adorable… sadly the ice cream cookie sandwiches are just normal looking… i secretly hoped for a plate with a fake lawn and a cookie sandwich shaped like a house… that i could then decorate with doors and windows of sugary faux-glass panes? Take a peek at the scene and the truck and my cookies and cream smooshed between oatmeal raisin cookies on the next page!
p.s. the paper is edible, they’ll even let you print your own logo on it… but just because its edible doesn’t mean it tastes good!
I hopped on a plan in london, hopped off in LA, and within hours i ran off to Manifest Equality ~ art for change strikes again ~ the location: this time in LA in a converted Big Lots in Hollywood ~ the cause: equality! Last time it was Manifest Hope in DC during the Obama Inauguration. Tonight was the pre-opening night event kicking off this week of Manifest Equality. With artworks from hundreds of artists ~ and The gallery will be open to the public, Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010 through Sunday, March 7th, 2010. There are so many unmissable pieces, quite the music lineup for the next week, and if you’re in the LA area, it’s a must see! I took so many pics, i couldn’t even decide what to share with you, so on the next page is a look at my favorites views of Manifest Equality ~ including a video of one of the most incredible water/reflection/reactive to music pieces that is definitely worth seeing in person!
I think i fell in love with the video installations of Jennifer West at the Calvin Klein Collection + LAND art event tonight… or perhaps, it’s the way people interacted with it. a large open space, multiple spastic video projections pulling you in ~ colorful, intriguing, and apparently the perfect thing to make stunning shadows as people passed in front of them. While i can’t seem to find a website for her, i did find this fun interview on Flash Art Online about these pieces! Turns out she’s a topangan! And the way she works with and physically manipulates real film fascinates me in this digital age… her love of and experimentation with abstraction and representation is beautiful! Beautiful and fun enough it certainly needed a post of its own! So take a peek at some of my favorite pics involving her projections from the night ~ as well as a video! That really gives you a good feel for the experience… i suggest playing it full screen in HD mode!
On incredible and unexpected inspiration tonight ~ i ended up at the Calvin Klein + Los Angeles Nomadic Division event. As the invite stated - “CALVIN KLEIN COLLECTION AND LOS ANGELES NOMADIC DIVISION (LAND) TO PRESENT FIRST-EVER EVENT IN LOS ANGELES IN CELEBRATION OF L.A. ARTS MONTH AND ART LOS ANGELES CONTEMPORARY (ALAC) Brands’ Creative Directors Francisco Costa and Italo Zucchelli to Host Special Evening; Unique Collaborations with Jean Shin, Neville Wakefield, and Special Installation by Jennifer West” Firstly the space across from the Pacific Design Center is absolutely stunning. A beautiful culmination of art and fashion, these collaborations were breath taking ~ Jean Shin created “Pattern Folds” commissioned by Calvin Klein, and first unveiled in Seoul. She’s known for her ability to create installation which transform castoff materials. In this case she created a beautiful installation on the first floor of the event. Upstairs in a specially lit stark white room, Neville Wakefield presents Zuchelli’s Spring 2010 collection… it was quite a trip to wander through the room as the collection is suspended and the lighting constantly shifts from incredibly bright, to dark. See the images of these collaborations as well as the space itself on the next page, and videos and images of Jennifer West’s installation have a post of their own here.
Wow. This has definitely been a whirlwind of a week or so, and a very Macallan filled month! A week and a half ago, i thought tasting the 50 and 52 year old Macallan were the oldest my lips may ever touch, but little did i know that this week i’d be sipping the 57 yr old Macallan! Tuesday night was a NOTCOT first. I’ve never played host at a party before! But when Macallan and the W Los Angeles approached me to co-host a party with Julie Wolfson, saying they’d take care of the details, we just had to invite some friends to come indulge with us, how could i say no? Despite the rainy night (which cleared up mid way through the party so we finally got to sneak outside and enjoy the brisk night air, curl up by the fireplace, and smoke cigars while sipping Macallan into the night), we had a great turn out. And as you know, Macallan loves twitter (in fact, our other co-host, The Macallan West Coast Ambassador, Eden Algie ~ just joined twitter, please follow him and message him to convince him to let us throw another LA party!)… so once again live tweeting was up on the screen during the party, and people were tweeting up quite a storm with #macallan (you can see my favorites on the next page!)… one of the highlights of the night was definitely getting to taste the 57 year Macallan in a Lalique crystal decanter… take a peek at the festivities, as well as some of the great coverage and photography to emerge from the event so far!
