In that interesting intersection of packaging, baking, gifting, dry+shippable... we have a unique twist on how to gift cookies. Without baking. And even get to have fun layering things together much like sand art as a kid where you layered various colored sand in glass? This first caught my eye in Glamour's Dec 07 issue ~ and i tore out the page to come back to... and then browsing Neiman Marcus noticed that even THEY are doing it with their infamous internet urban legend of a chocolate chip recipe (more on both below). As usual, this got me on a little internet rampage googling up "gift in a jar" "mix in a jar" and there are a LOT of options and recipes out there... however, i must say most of my finds lead me to some pretty painfully hideous sites, and their recipes images were not that much nicer. So i'll spare you. But as for the semi-crafty or low budgeted out there, i think we designers could do some really gorgeous things with this whole no-bake baking gifts concept... after all its really ALL in the packaging isn't it? (If it doesn't come out perfectly, maybe they baked it wrong!)... oh and if you're truly lazy, you can probably just buy some nice packaging and repackage some betty crocker?

Leave it to Phillip Wood of CITIZEN:Citizen to give me exactly what i needed once i got into the madness that was the Paper 24 Hour Department Store... my prescription of Design Therapy. Although i must say i STRONGLY disagree with the Bx that says i should take it ONCE yearly, i'm more of a daily overdoser ~ and if you're here, i'm going to assume you are too. Why else would i have NOTCOT? and NOTCOT.org? (and TasteSpotting and notcouture too! There really isn't enough design therapy out there.)

The most tempting thing to grace my screen this morning is the D.L. & Co's Mori Ex Cacao Skulls... Particularly this black Curious Chili "An eccentric blend of chilies and spices immersed in smooth chocolate ganache, generating a warmth that rises to an almost deadly heat, before leaving you spent, yet craving more." Take a look at the other two skulls as well as the gift box trio below! In Bitter White Brandied Cherry and Scorched Caramel, how can you resist?
Rodrigo Bruna just sent in some images from Reconstruccioniepce which is showing at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes Curated by Angélica Peréz Germain - October 5 – December 3, 2007. If he sounds familiar, you are probably remembering our previous coverage of his incredible Toast "painting". Believe it or not, this too is made from toast! Here is his description of the piece:
"The first photography of a landscape was taken by Niepcé in 1826. The particularity and beauty of this image triggered my attention to work with it. In the middle of 2006 I initiated my research and creation project titled Reconstruccioniepce. Through spatial and objetual projects I developed a reflection of this image and the fragility of the reconstruction processes. The material chosen for these works was bread, and the action was toasting. It is not longer the sun which fixes the images, but the vehement fire that fixes the vestiges of a landscape on white slices of bread. This statement defines my system of work and the material and technical displacement I made of the photographic process. Reconstruccioniepce V arises from the destruction realized of a previous version of this work at the Museo de Artes Visuales of Santiago.
The remains of bread that were left from this action are selected and organized in a ornamental border that crosses two walls of the room, proposing a new version of this enigmatic landscape."
Click the images to see more!. Mmmmmm. Cinnamon Rolls. Ok this weeks roundup ~ i wanted to give you guys a little insight on how hard editing submissions can sometimes become. When i started TasteSpotting, the vision was to create a gorgeously drool worthy space filled with delectable delights... and we were excited to have ANY submissions at all. But as with all things, evolution is inevitable... and scaling, necessary. So as the visual/designy side of the site (and yes, we all know i'm quite the newbie when it comes to food)... trends have become even more apparent on TasteSpotting than any of the others lately, and it's put editing in a hard place. For example... this week, EVERYONE seems to be cooking delicious cinnamon rolls! 5 of the posts are up there, and even more were in submissions that didn't make it up... this is where it is no longer a problem about whether the image and post are things we love, but whether it is interesting and stand out enough as a Cinnamon Roll post. Because as you can imagine, a front page of 30 cinnamon roll pictures isn't exactly what people come to TasteSpotting to see. Other trends? Last week mooncakes were showing up in full force. Then there was the heirloom tomato trend before that. Pomegranates have been popular lately too. Basically when a trend organically appears, we try not to let it take over the site TOO much, and the standards tend to raise on that theme. Anyhow, i just wanted to let you all know, and see whether people had any ideas or opinions on how we should handle this. Our goal is to showcase some of the most beautiful and interesting selections of links daily to whet your palate... how do we handle the possibility of having TOO MANY posts a day? Is there such a thing?

i-delicious is the portfolio of illustrator Lesia Chernish, and it's just that delectably delicious that it feels like a perfect blend of NOTCOT and TasteSpotting's passions. I must admit i've tried hunting for more information on her, but she only seems to exist on her site: i-delicious! A few more of her pieces that i love below.
Sauces 'n Love ~ my recent packaging discovery at the market... although not the ONLY reason i purchase something, its definitely big on my first impressions, so i grabbed this Sauces 'n Love Tuscan Vodka Scarpetta, and was pleased to see that they come in these nice Re-usable screw cap plastic containers that are microwave, freezer, and diswasher safe! Also nice clean typography on the label ~ and its "Healthy 'n Love - Gluten Free. Vegetarian. No Sugar. No Preservatives. Low count on Carbs, fat, and choesterol." And the best part ~ this sauce was incredible. So fresh and delicious. Mmmmm... Close up images of the labels and container below!

I can admit it - as much as i love fine cheeses and crackers, packaging still sways my purchasing... luckily this time it paid off. Came across these Fine Cheese Company Crackers at Faletti's which are imported from Bath, and the boxes have gorgeous imagery and typography. Above are the Sea Salt and Olive Oil (absolutely delicious to munch on plain even) and the Rosemary Crackers. Below i also have pictures of the natural and charcoal crackers with simpler illustration and typography on the box that is worth taking a look at. I also found the Charcoal Crackers visually interesting, being black they look really nice in contrast with white cheeses.

Ok, on odd fixations for the night, i remembered an old OLD post on travel chopsticks (dan actually even bought them)... and they were silly and complex? As shade elaine and i wonder... they aren't really that much lighter, or take up that much less space... why do you need them? where are you bringing them? Well... i googled travel chopsticks and we were the first hit... so i browsed more, and apparently the travel chopstick options have come a long way!
