Guy Limone at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin

strand0.jpg It was fascinating to see Guy Limone’s work up close at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin… and the way people interact with it. The Parisian artist’s works are often made of miniature plastic figurines strung in long ceiling to floor length strands as statistical visualizations (taking infographics to a whole new level), two of which i encountered when wandering the gallery ~ and others are figurines spreading across a table/etc… what’s most fascinating when encountering them with no context or explanation, are the details! The bizarre situations/characters these figurines are in… from farmers to scuba divers, pigs to horses, police men and shopping carts and so much more… they also make awesome shadows! Take a look at some details at two strands i was mesmerized with on the next page!

Lift, Maurizio Cattelan

vator1.jpg Teeny tiny elevators… which of course open and close and make all the corresponding noises… except actually moving up and down. (Though i’m still secretly hoping, if you put something inside one, it disappears, or pops out in the other.) Discovered the Liliputian “Lift” by Maurizio Cattelan while checking out the legendary Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in Paris. See more pics of it on the next page!

Scott Campbell - Noblesse Oblige

mainwow.jpg Laser cut stacks of uncut money… into skull motifs… that is one QUICK way to grab my attention, and almost want to miss a flight to paris. Almost… thank goodness Linhchi was able to go check out the inaugural exhibition of the OH WOW Gallery, SCOTT CAMPBELL NOBLESSE OBLIGE. Scott Campbell has been much loved on NOTCOT over the years, from tattoo artist, to laser artist, to beautiful collaborations with laser cut leather for Louis Vuitton… and to my favorite, his work with laser cut stacks of uncut sheets of US currency. And this time there is even tattoo inspired art inside ostrich egg shells and burning images into stacks of money…Take a peek into the show and the lush green gallery on the next page!

Becca ~ aka Rebecca Midwood

becca0.jpg Becca! From art school roots, to street art, to gallery shows, more street art, to teaching, and back? I love the stylistic/contextual juxtapositions and versatility of her work and experiences! They are very ~ Dick & Jane meet pin ups meet fashion illustrations… in gorgeously refreshing colors… pasted up around the city! I rediscovered her this weekend when popping by the new Street Art Pop Up Store/Gallery… started by Z (who, like many, is part of the Obey Giant family), focusing on creating a space to showcase and sell the works of established street artists. Amongst the work the day after the opening, there was a stack of amazing prints/posters/originals… and i fell in love with a Becca print. No surprise, i suppose, since i even posted the show it came from a show featured on NOTCOT.org ages ago (but i forgot! until i looked it up at home!)… Anyhow, Becca has some amazing work, take a peek at the pics and video on the next page!

Installation 7: Scion Art Tour

installation1.jpg Beautiful opening tonight to kick off the 2011 series of exhibitions at the Scion Artspace LA in Culver City. First show of the season Installation 7: Video - (video trailer here) Challenging 10 artists to create 2-8min non-narrative video pieces, you can see some amazing original work from Franki Chan, David Choe, Cheryl Dunn, Gluekit, Matt Goldman, Cody Hudson & Jared Eberhardt, The London Police, Mackie Osborne, Souther Salazar and SSUR. If you’re in the area, definitely worth experiencing them in person ~ if not in LA, the tour is heading to Brooklyn end of March, Wichita end of April, Minneapolis beginning of June, and ends in Austin in July. Openings like these are enjoyable on so many levels… viewing the pieces larger than life with sounds mixing (there are three projections in the main room), viewing them on tvs with headphones in the back, and watching people watch them in wonder. It truly must be experienced… and then photos of the experience almost become a whole other experience to share! So get over there if you can, and take a peek at my view on the experience on the next page… from fun text over gorgeous scenery to people being slapped while they wait in the shower to pachelbel’s canon, to those crazy huge promotional balloon beings… you’ll see what i mean on the next page.

Carlos Bonil's Restos @ el 52

plaskull1.jpg While here in Mexico City for 2 nights with Kahlua, staying in La Roma at Hotel Brick… with snippets of free time, we’ve wandered and eaten our way through La Roma, Polanco, and La Condessa, and today i took a little walk hunting for cute design/art to check out… pardon the cell phone pics, but i thought i was just taking a little stroll!

Irresistible yet eerie, here is a peek at Carlos Bonil’s Restos that i came across at Galeria OMR’s el 52. They are skulls and skeletons made from plastic… in medical looking plastic containers… they are made of things like plastic forks! Totally mesmerizingly odd, see the pics on the next page to see what i mean!

And wishing i could get that microscope wallpaper you see above! Also the jellyfish and other bio organism vinyl stickers on the walls look stunning as well! See more pictures i found over at Funderburgh’s flickr feed after pouring over the Fox Is Black’s post… as well as some from the Vallery, which even has prints for sale!

Team Tempest Freerunning at TBWA\Chiat

chiart1.jpg Sometimes the best art is locked away INSIDE TBWA\Chiat\Day! So, i’ve shown you their studios before, and you just saw their 5353 Music Art Fest ~ well, while i was there, popped inside again, and their latest internal art exhibit is awesome! Freerunning captured in action and printed larger than life all around their communal areas… only thing that could be cooler would be watching the LA based Team Tempest freerunners bouncing off the surfboard bar, gargoyle, fish tank, shipping containers and more!

And since i was a bit ignorant, just read up a bit on the difference between Freerunning and Parkour - according to wikipedia - “Parkour as a discipline emphasizes efficiency, whilst free running embodies complete freedom of movement — and includes many acrobatic maneuvers. Although the two are often physically similar, the mindsets of each are vastly different.” Watching some Tempest TV, it definitely look like an incredibly athletic art form that feels like urban tumbling/dancing at times! Mesmerizing to say the least ~ and apparently you check out Team Tempest at UCLA every saturdat at 11am!

For now ~ check out more pics of the exhibit up at TBWA\Chiat\Day on the next page!

p.s. UPDATE! The stunning photography in these prints are by people/dramatic sports photog, Andy Batt!

BIGFOOT at Hurley )( Space

bigfoot0.jpg Amazing Bigfoot solo show, Ominous Compositions from the Magic Mountains at Hurley’s )( Space in Costa Mesa opened tonight. Wow. The mural, the smoking heads that greet you, the garage door mouth of a huge bigfoot… such amazing installations! And the wood pieces, where he manages to bring bigfoots out of the wood grain ~ mesmerizing! So many beautiful pieces by BIGFOOT who has been all over the skate, art, toy world the last decade ~ really fun to see it all up close and larger than life! As StrangeCo says, “his work depicts the conflict between respect for nature (held by the Bigfoot race) and the destructive agenda of humans.” Fun detail to look for? Jason Maloney, Hurley’s resident artist and friend of Bigfoot, even has a little snake snuck into the mural! See LOTS of pics of the show on the next page… and the gorgeous sunset too!

p.s. you can also check out a video with him interviewed by Maloney for Hurley here

Melissa Haslam's Botanica

haslam0.jpg Eerie inspiration of the day ~ LeBasse Gallery just posted a preview of Melissa Haslam’s Botanica… my favorite is Fox and Rabbit ~ though it’s hard not to think VAMPIRE! As soon as you see it… or maybe that’s the inescapable twilight mania subconsciously working on me. There’s something fun about her girls in their fun, simple, dark fashions with that burst of color coming from the naturally inspired…. flowers, animals through hair, and more. Take a peek at more of my favorites from Melissa Haslam’s upcoming show on the next page.

Shag's Art Shack

shagit.jpg Stopped by the opening of Laguna Art Museum’s Art Shack ~ a large group show of artists creating literally “art shacks” for people to explore! Absolute favorite of course was Shag’s (originally made in 2009, but it looks like some newer art pieces displayed) ~ an adorably cool scaled down mid century modern home complete with those kid sized versions of design classics (panton chairs, eames chairs, etc!) ~ that you can actually wander in and out of! And feel very Alice in wonderland in it! It would basically be the coolest backyard “playhouse” ever if we were kids… take a peek at more pics on the next page!

Manifest Equality

manifesteq00.jpg I hopped on a plan in london, hopped off in LA, and within hours i ran off to Manifest Equality ~ art for change strikes again ~ the location: this time in LA in a converted Big Lots in Hollywood ~ the cause: equality! Last time it was Manifest Hope in DC during the Obama Inauguration. Tonight was the pre-opening night event kicking off this week of Manifest Equality. With artworks from hundreds of artists ~ and The gallery will be open to the public, Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010 through Sunday, March 7th, 2010. There are so many unmissable pieces, quite the music lineup for the next week, and if you’re in the LA area, it’s a must see! Keith Noordzy - Man Made Disaster Studies

paperpush.jpg This morning i woke up and fell for Keith Noordzy’s “Man Made Disaster Studies” which he has in the latest Gallery 1988 show Paper Pushers. PRISM Gallery: MindTheGap

mindthegap0.jpg Popped by the opening of the inaugural PRISM Gallery exhibition, MindTheGap, featuring the stunning works of Barry McGee and Phil Frost. There are so many angles a post on this opening could take, just doing a quick google of it, quickly you can see who's who that showed up, the architecture, the artists, the gallerist... so let's just focus on what was truly most inspiring about the event. The art. The details. The space. And to take in such overwhelming amounts of pattern heavy art that took a bit to process... and perched on sunset in West Hollywood, the three tiered roof with breath taking LA views were exactly what you needed... although the sparkling lights of the city felt as if you were staring into another patterned piece of art to lose yourself in. With all of the work shown, you could easily spend some time discovering details, turning away, turning back, and still see something new. So explore some of my favorite views of the show on the next page...

Beyond Eden Sneak Peek

beyondeden00.jpg Sometimes there are moments where it feels like the universe is against you and you're torn between too many awesome opportunities ~ those are definitely the moments where you just have to step back and find less obvious solutions? In this case, i double booked myself. Months ago i agreed to be a media sponsor for Beyond Eden (AMAZING collection of my favorite LA galleries coming together for a HUGE show in the gorgeous Barnsdall Park LA Municipal Art Gallery) which has the VIP opening tonight, and runs through the weekend... i also got committed to join the lovely ladies of the Broad Summit up in wine country (hence my currently being up in SF!).

None the less, i think somehow this has worked out perfectly thanks to the quick thinking of Andrew (of the fabulous Thinkspace Gallery and co-founder of the event) ~ because he let me go sneak in early before i drove up to SF, and get some exclusive sneak peek pics to tease you with! And it was SUCH a fun challenge! I promised not to show you and full pictures... so i got a chance to shoot some amazing close ups and details as well as a few overview shots to give you a feel for the massssssssive space! I dare you to figure out where all the details came from... and there are so many pieces i'm dying to share with you fully soon too! But Angelenos, you HAVE to go check this out ~ especially if you love art, gorgeous parks, and stunning views of LA (you can see downtown skylines, hollywood sign, and griffith park observatory to name a few from the grassy goodness right outside the gallery perched upon the hill!). So first things first ~ go peek at what you'll find at the show.

And no joke. AMAZING show lined up over at Beyond Eden this weekend! Go check it out!!!

LeBasse Projects Ushiro/Ryuichi Dinner

ushiro1.jpg On unique experiences, i was invited to a lovely intimate dinner at the LeBasse Projects gallery in Culver City prior to the opening of their Edwin Ushiro "Softly Encompassing the Womb" and Ryuichi Ogino "Idealistically Hypocritical 3" shows this weekend ~ where they essentially set up a dining table in the midst of all the artwork, and invited a few of us to dine with the artists and gallery owners and discuss everything from the art, to the mythologies and stories behind the paintings, to twitter/facebook/luddites, to hypocrisy, to ghosts, and so much more. I also couldn't help but get constantly distracted at the stunning pieces on all sides to stare at... gorgeous body of work from Edwin Ushiro as always. And having a chance to really spend time with the pieces up close was great, the larger pieces are just breath taking, and so beautifully layered with such evocative palettes. Take a peek at the scene, and some of the pieces up close on the next page!

Megan Whitmarsh - Silver + Gold

meg1.jpg While i've never been a huge embroidery fan, Megan Whitmarsh's little yetis and lilliputian people rocking out have always been so adorably amusing. These were spotted over at Synchronicity at CAboom, and definitely made me giggle. Take a look at the rest of these silver and gold little guys with their crazy geometric/neon clothes and patterns popping off mini canvases on the next page!

Renee Lawter's Energy Efficient Dinos

dino.jpg On pieces that caught my eye at the Black Maria Gallery booth in CA|Boom ~ Renee Lawter's Energy Efficient Dinos are just too funny. Compact florescent with wings? Flying out of the mouths of dinos? Who have incandescents as spines? See the full pieces, framed and all on the next page...

Thinkspace @ CA|Boom

thinkspace0.jpg I didn't know what to expect when i heard CA|Boom had moved from barker hanger (which i love!) to that abandoned feeling Robinsons May space in Beverly Hills... and from March to the same dates as the Dwell on Design Show... but i had to check it out none the less. It takes a few minutes to cover - but the thing worth seeing is the art! A few great local galleries are showing some fun work... like Thinkspace!!!

That piece above is one of a series by Brett Amory in his "Waiting" Series ~ and it's absolutely STUNNING. A must see in person. There's just an incredible way it pulls you in ~ beautiful color palette ~ and then as you get closer you notice the details and emotional distance between the 3 tightly seated communters who float like an island in the space... Love the hoodied guy too... There's something terribly fun about the shift to seeing more art works with the beautiful illustrations/characters woven into larger more complex and/or abstract pieces coming in... leave it to Thinkspace to lead the way. Take a look at a few of their other pieces showing at CA|Boom which also caught my eye on the next page!

p.s.
LA kids - if you're not on the Sour Harvest list, you should be. It's far better than asking me what shows are happening each week!

Mu Pan Origamu at Papershapers

origamu.jpg Origamu ~ origami Mu Pan style (cut, fold, then paint!) ~ was another extraordinary stand out at the Scion Space's Giant Robot curated Papershapers show. This multitalented Brookyn based artist took the theme of historical and mythological characters from his paintings and had them take over the Scion Space ~ the looks of awe on the people crowded around them was equally fascinating to watch... And i just found his flickr of personal pics from the set up and of some of the characters in his yard! See more closeups on the next page!
