Valentine’s day is around the corner, and the Kraken Rum just surprised us with a V-day card, adorably mini rum, and a black rose! For their Kraken vs Cupid campaign, the lucky folks in London have a chance to pick up a bouquet of black roses paired with a bottle of Kraken (vs champagne)! How do they do it? “The black roses for sale are created by placing dark red roses in vases filled with a Kraken’s ink in place of water. This ink is then transported up the stem, via the xylem, to the leaves and petals turning them black, a scientific process that will also be showcased in the space. For dramatic effect some of the flowers will also be turned black using special floristry dyes.” and they will be paired with “… Calendula Lily Eclips and Queen of the Night Tulips, both darkest purple in colour looking visually black to the human eye.” Take a peek at details of the gorgeously dark surprise we received on the next page! Our adventures with Baileys began a few weeks ago, at the enigmatic Dennis Severs House, where we joined Bompas & Parr for a secret event which promised Culinary Alchemy, marbled foods, chocolate and rhapsodomancy. We didn’t know much, but marbling was suggested and a touch of alchemy… Once inside, we learned about the years or development behind Baileys’ Chocolat Luxe, which officially launches today at Harvey Nichols and will be available more widely from October. The new liqueur combines Belgian chocolate, Irish whiskey, and cream (alongside Madgascan vanilla and other delicious ingredients).
Baileys Chocolat Luxe was revealed among a sumptuous brunch of treats from Lily Vanilli with a marbled theme. The swirling marbling, mixing of chocolate, whiskey and cream is key to the new Chocolat Luxe as is its decadence, captured beautifully by the venue of the launch, which even included a dining room train! Hangar 1 Vodka has always been deliciously, locally, hand-made in… a hangar in Alameda, CA! And to celebrate their stunning redesign (beautiful new scientific/graduated cylinder feeling bottle complete with rubber stopper by Stranger & Stranger!), they’ve sent over a Tasting Tour in a BOX! (designed by Dead As We Know It!) Inside the box is a peek into the world Hangar 1 vodka comes from via postcards and a fun booklet ~ of course, there’s one of the new vodka bottles and dropper bottles of the various flavors ~ and a pipette! The pipette is clearly marked for “cocktails” and not marked for “shots”, but naturally we had to try tasting from it… take a peek at the hand-made vodka deliciousness and the beautiful packaging details all on the next page!
It is always amazing to see some of my favorite things come together… in this case, The Macallan and Oakley have teamed up to created quite the limited edition: The Flask. And to be clear, the specialty of this set isn’t just the flask itself, but also the special elixir contained with it - The Macallan’s first-ever, single cask All American Oak Scotch Whisky, described as: “Its lemon citrus and spicy wood flavors make their bold introduction, then are tempered by rich, creamy notes, ultimately smoothing into a sophisticatedly balanced heady, sweet finish.” And only 550 limited editions of gift sets of The Flask with the accompanying 22yr single cask All American Sherry Oak Scotch Macallan will be available. As for The Flask itself, Oakley did quite a job! The inner flask is laser welded, food grade steel wrapped in carbon fiber composite that is treated to an intensive passivation and electro-polishing procedure then clad in black anodized 5-axis machined aerospace grade aluminum. The bottom is rubberized for non-skip gripping. The cap is double sprung for ergo sipping. There’s even a small rectangular air vent on the side of the machined aluminum funnel for ventilation… and it screws precisely into the mouthpiece so you don’t lose a drop.

A spontaneous road trip came up yesterday which landed me at the brand new Soda & Swine is a meatball and soda spot and its alcoholic pharmacy of a sister, Polite Provisions that just popped up in Normal Heights in San Diego… being unexpected, this post is a cell phone peek into our experiences… lots of fun branding and signage… and it’s an interesting set up. You can only order meatballs and soda and soft serve and pie at Soda & Swine, but you can have it brought over to you at Polite Provisions… you can order cocktails, punch bowls, beer cocktails, cocktails on tap, wine, etc at Polite Provisions, but you can’t bring them to Soda & Swine. To go between the two - you go to the hallway of the bathrooms in Polite Provisions and through the doorway to pop out behind the fireplace in Soda & Swine, which is actually in a roofless area that feels like you’re in between buildings (just look up to notice the stars and moon shining brightly down on you amongst the heatlamps)…
Interesting set up - cute spaces - tucked away in a quickly hipsterifying Normal Heights… it’s surrounded by bus stops, liquor store, dollar store and across from the Air Conditioned Lounge. And i can’t help but wonder if meatballs are the new sausage… Soda & Swine lets you pick the meatball style (smashed in a slider, 3 in a sub, on pasta, or 3 a la carte) then the flavor, cheese, and sauce. You must try the Smoked Pork, it’s definitely the best of the lot. Also the brussel sprouts with bacon and broccolini are delicious… apricot soft serve tasted like dried apricots and cream blended together… and the Caribbean Vacation on tap and Scottish Breakfast were lovely. p.s. There seems to be a dispute as to what this area counts as - is it Normal Heights? Between Heights? North Park? Regardless - you’ll find these two at 30th and Adams!
