Exploring the culinary side of LA ~ our Tasteologie editor, Jackson, had a fun chat with Chef Andre Guerrero about their variety of speciality grilled cheeses and beer director Ryan Sweeney about their Belgian brews over at Little Bear. Here’s a look at his latest adventure:
I love grilled cheese. It is the combination of two of humankind’s oldest food products. As it is about ten thousand years old… we’ve had lots of practice in eating and making this comfort food staple. Little Bear, a new bar in downtown L.A., offers a quartet of interesting grilled cheeses to go along with its amazingly well curated selection of Belgian Beer. It is a fantastic addition to Los Angeles’s Arts District and fits into the growing local network of lofts, artists, artisans, film shoots, factories, and restaurants. Little Bear brings nuance and great attention to detail raising otherwise straight forward food and beer into a warm comforting embrace. I couldn’t resist sampling their entire grilled cheese lineup! Leave it to the packaging geniuses at London/NY based Stranger & Stranger to manage to bottle up Holiday Spirit! Remember last year’s absolutely stunning No 12. Christmas Absinthe? (And they are also the design masterminds behind packaging like the Kraken!) This year they’ve taken to Spirit No. 13 ~ in proper brown bagged style, rubber band and all… and the ads are hilarious. And that’s before you even get in to the very detailed apothecary styled label inside! Take a look at all of the amazing details on the next page…
Fresh in from our London-based editor Justine Aw.
We were honored to receive bottle 1/100 of Saint beer, a British made craft lager from The Saint Brewing Co. The gorgeous green bottle came in a cozy box snuggled up against a wintry Nordic Knit Scarf from You Must Create (YMC). Once chilled to perfection, the lager was crisp and hoppy without being too bitter or too bubbly. If you too “…want to go down in history as one of the first 100 people in Britain to experience Saint, please enter your email address below.” ~ well, not quite below, but on their website… you can also see some of the bottling pics at Selectism. Take a peek at the beautiful design and handwritten note up close on the next page!
While in Las Vegas, popped into the awesome men’s store, Stitched in the Cosmopolitan… great to finally see their wall of Macallan 18 lockers and bespoke luxuries… what caught my eye most were the new leather cased metal flasks, shot glasses, and travel bars by Daines & Hathaway. The Triple Bar Set in particular is stunning (and you can order it by calling Stitched) ~ beautiful cylindrical leather case that resembles an old slr lens case with shoulder strap, and when unzipped you have three equal wedge flasks to fill with your libation of choice… and perfect to share with friends since each flask has a little shot glass above the cap.
