BRIAN VIVEROS "Mess With The Bull"

viveros0.jpg Just picked up this special Thinkspace print release from Brian Viveros ~ "Mess With The Bull"... The most amazing thing about these prints? Brian says "I wanted to bring more life to this print as a whole so I worked on each one individually adding to the face and body, just lil' subtleties ya' know - not taking away but adding more, something special to each one so its not just your everyday print." and thus begins the game of "spot the difference" ~ you can see the larger image of the print from the Thinkspace email on the next page... but i think my main little feature is the tear is more of a mascara bleed (which i actually quite like better!)... and it's just so incredible that he touched up each of the 12 prints to make the colors pop more ~ and such a beautiful frame as well. I have her hanging over my desk right now ~ something about the strength and unmesswithable emotion effusing from her that is just the inspiration we all need sometimes ~ especially while getting through the more painful moments in life? So take a peek at the close ups on the next page...

Thinkspace @ CA|Boom

thinkspace0.jpg I didn't know what to expect when i heard CA|Boom had moved from barker hanger (which i love!) to that abandoned feeling Robinsons May space in Beverly Hills... and from March to the same dates as the Dwell on Design Show... but i had to check it out none the less. It takes a few minutes to cover - but the thing worth seeing is the art! A few great local galleries are showing some fun work... like Thinkspace!!!

That piece above is one of a series by Brett Amory in his "Waiting" Series ~ and it's absolutely STUNNING. A must see in person. There's just an incredible way it pulls you in ~ beautiful color palette ~ and then as you get closer you notice the details and emotional distance between the 3 tightly seated communters who float like an island in the space... Love the hoodied guy too... There's something terribly fun about the shift to seeing more art works with the beautiful illustrations/characters woven into larger more complex and/or abstract pieces coming in... leave it to Thinkspace to lead the way. Take a look at a few of their other pieces showing at CA|Boom which also caught my eye on the next page!

p.s.
LA kids - if you're not on the Sour Harvest list, you should be. It's far better than asking me what shows are happening each week!

Florence Deygas and Veuve Clicquot

Deygas1.jpg Ooooh a behind the scenes look at the work of Florence Deygas for Veuve Clicquot. Deygas is also the creator of the adorable Caprino & Peperone, those two doggies that are the Colette mascots!!! I love the beauty and simplicity of her brushstroke paintings ~ and it's no surprise that she's collaborated with Veuve Clicquot so many times. (Here's a peek at an installation video she did with them in 2007 ~ where her work looks nearly like lipstick on floor to ceiling windows illustrating the skyline below... See the video!) She has also collaborated with brands such as Fendi, Yves Sain Laurent, Nokia, Vogue and Lacoste.

I was initially torn to have so many Veuve Clicquot related postings back to back ~ but realized i feel like i've found a kindred spirit in the VC brand ~ and their collaborations and support of incredible artists and designers consistently has proven incredibly inspiring time and time again. As far as brands go, i suppose i'd love to have NOTCOT take a similar route someday, finding new ways to not only help share incredible works we discover, but also help inspire, support, and collaborate with artists and designers we love! But until then... click through to the next page and see more of this latest collaboration between Florence Deygas and Veuve Clicquot, as well as a peek at the artist at work!

Borja Bonaque Cities

build1.jpg I love the way Spanish designer/illustrator, Borja Bonaque portrays urban landscapes ~ they have a certain retro futuristic glow to them ~ and feel so fun on skateboard decks as well! The water towers are adorable. I've had her images open in tabs all weekend, kept getting too distracted by them to actually get this post up until now! See more of my favorites on the next page!

Mike Russek's Gallery At Lucent L'Amour

Park1.jpg The one art piece that has been stuck in my head since i first laid eyes on it... John Park's Harlequin Ape. It is absolutely stunning. Every detail is incredible! Because all the closeup crops in the world wouldn't do it justice, and really you need to see it in person, but second best, you can check out a high res version here. This was only one of many piece in the art gallery set up by Mike Russek at Lucent L'amour. Take a browse of the gallery and some of the other pieces that jumped out at me on the next page!

Cherri Wood: Some Kind Of Wonderful

cherri1.jpgOn shows i wish i could go see in person ~ the SF Gallery 1988 has Some Kind Of Wonderful opening tonight, and i was just checking out the pieces online. This group show looks incredible! And in particular i'm loving the work of Cherri Wood (aka Fy Simone) is a 19 year old illustrator based in Minnesota, USA. ~ with her girls viewed from the back floating on paper... her style of watercolour, acrylic, and graphite on paper is just mesmerizing, and they really stand out both on their own and in the set... See them all on the next page, and if you're in SF, definitely go check out the show!

p.s.
i love the way she signs with what looks like a thumbprint...

Blanca Apodaca's Butterflycore

blanca.jpgLate night inspirations ~ just fell into another one of those random research distractions that the internet so easily sucks me into... this time the starting point was a discussion with Rose (the R of A+R) during the Lucky shoot, and it came up that her sister was a musician and artist, so being curious, did some poking around and came across Blanca Apodaca's uber page, which then led me to the images of her painting her newest album cover on her dining table - which i happily perused while listening to songs from her new album Butterfly Core (Sugar Painted Valentine is stuck in my head at the moment)... Anyhow, loved the mix of styles in her album cover, it seems to be a fascinating mix of.... hippie - gangsta - colorful trippiness? See more images on the next page --

Touching by Tikkurila & Pentagon Design

paint1.jpgFinally, an alternative to paint chips and paint swatches to help you decide what paint to go with... at the Hardcore: New Finnish Design Exhibition in the Meatpacking District (i think this was the best exhibition i saw this trip), i was introduced to the work of Finnish group, Pentagon Design, and their great "Touching" Exhibition concept for presenting paint textures for Tikkurila Paints. It was hard not to go straight over to the large farm animals in various colors/glosses/etc... and impossible not to play with the magnets on the magnetically painted horse!

From the Pentagon Design press release: "Who can resist the urge to touch these near-life-size domestic animals, reined into modeling the diverse selection of Tikkurila paint coatings? Horses, pigs, cows, and calves have been given makeovers with surfaces to match their natures. You can feel the character of the coatings in your fingertips as you pet and stroke the nostalgic mammalian models. Beneath the feeling lie hard facts: the various options for covering a resin surface not only look different, they feel different. There's magnetic paint, textured coating, tinted light putty and chalkboard paint, oil putty, alkyd paint. There are pearl and silver glazes, done in a lace pattern. This urban petting zoo for the design world is amazingly illustrative, both tactilely and visually."

More images on the next page! (From both the Hardcore exhibition as well as their press images.)
