So that sudden redeye from SF to NY (you know, the one that left my poor new carnivorous plants hanging out in my car in SFO somewhere) it is for the Dyson Air Multiplier Fan launch ~ and just between you and i, it took everything inside me not to get all fan girl while meeting James Dyson, and he was so incredibly nice (smart too of course!). But while i have lots of pics of the launch as well as the fans themselves... first things first ~ how adorable is the press kit? Stunning, sleek little brushed stainless usb key on a wire keychain attached to a book describing how not to waste those OLD fan blades that are now being rendered obsolete? (nearly?) ~ So, had to share with you "The demise of the buffetting blade: 20 Uses for the old buffetting blade" and adorably cheeky little book, my quick hotel shots may not fully do it justice, but you'll get the idea, and perhaps a quick giggle too. So flip through the details with me on the next page...

Mmmm, who doesn't love surprise packages in brown paper tied up with string? This latest mysterious piece of mail comes from the very awesome folks at W+K teasing me about their new ARG (Alternative Reality Game), Levis Go Forth, that just launched yesterday! (You twitter followers will recall i gave you a heads up when we were 20 min from the start!) SO what is it? Well, you'll have to take a peek into the package on the next page... but from what i can gather we have the opportunity to win G.O. Fourth's fortune of $100,000. Mixing part story, part scavenger hunt adventure, and part puzzle game ~ between online, word of mouth, real world events and more layered across the country and internet ~ we're currently in Phase Two of this adventure where the Online intersects with Reality... Phase Three is all about the Real World... and in Nov the final phase will narrow things down to 100 finalists to solve the final puzzle... SO, game on? See what was in the mysterious envelope on the next page!
Troy Abbott's Nano Cage - "All digital beauty. No Mess or Mortality." Came across this piece at Tent Digital at Tent London 2009, and it was hard to ignore, adorable little digital finches living in gps sized screens inside colorful bird cages... my favorite is of course the Yoko which lives in the classic bird cage in a matte black. In fact, all of these are even available for purchase!
While i can't possibly imagine having one of these replacing the joy of having an adorable little bird accompanying you... it's an intriguing concept mixing nature and technology, and it's certainly fascinating to watch... so take a peek at more pics and a quick video i made while at the show on the next page!
First you saw the Beatles Rock Band controller versus the actual Rickenbacker 325, next you got to peek into the woodshop, then you saw how they were painted and electronic components added... and now for the final installment, here's a peek at some of the incredible design details from vintage pieces, limited editions, and concepts that never made it to market...
First you saw the Beatles Rock Band controller versus the actual Rickenbacker 325, next you got to peek into the woodshop, now take a look at how the guitars get finished ~ from the priming to the sanding to how each and every little electronic component finds it way to make the Rickenbacker 325 the icon it is...
As promised in the last post showing you the Beatles Rock Band controller versus the actual Rickenbacker 325~ here's a peek into how Rickenbacker guitars are actually made! I had so many pictures because their whole process is so fascinating that instead of cutting TOO many of them, i'm making this a three parter... so first, come take a peek into the woodshop on the next page! Stunning how these beautiful pieces of wood get transformed into the guitars we know and love...
Its striking how similar in SIZE the real Rickenbacker 325 and the Beatles Rock Band Controller are. In fact, they are so similar, i couldn't resist visiting the Rickenbacker factory in Santa Ana to check them out side by side in person! Funny coincidence ~ on 09/09/09 when Beatles Rock Band launched, the factory happened to start working on a run of the Rickenbacker 325! They claim it really wasn't planned! So luckily when i visited a few days later, i not only got to take a peek at the controller and its real life counterpart in person, but also had an opportunity to see exactly how the real guitars are made! (and it is truly an amazing process, so many more steps of skilled craftsmen than i ever imagined, but more to come on that soon!)
Take a peek at the next page to see lots of pics of the Rickenbacker 325 alongside the Beatles Rock Band Controller ~ as well as peeks into the factory and renderings of the controller!
We all have soft spots for certain things ~ and Tord Boontje is certainly one of mine. Even when he goes from designs for moroso and artecnica to target... and now HP!!! And i will own up to the fact that i'm not a huge fan of overly designed laptops/netbooks ~ especially when they are designed to look more clutch like and girly than sleek sexy electronics... but i. want. this HP Mini 110 by Studio Tord Boontje! As a design object more than a netbook! Even when its obsolete, i want it to just stare at in all its fascinatingly layered HP Imprint 3D technology layering in imagery into the case resembling the floating layers of vectorized images much like vinyl stickering between layers of acrylic. So subtle, so mesmerizing, AND filled with endangered creatures tucked into the flora? And to top that off? Gorgeous site and fun tord boontje "spot the animals" type flash game and free wallpapers as well. *Swoon* ~ so take a look at screenshots and images on the next page!
most annoying looping noises on their site though...
Happy 9/9/9 ~ it's been quite a day! On awesome launches that are hard to miss, The Beatles Rock Band came out today, and it was impossible not to share an unboxing of the goods with you! For starters the imagery is stunning (gorgeous intro video on the next page!) ~ and the custom guitars are adorable mini-plasticized simplified versions of their normal forms... The front of the kick-drum is like those frisbees or carshades where you can twist it up into a smaller disc when not in use (you know the type, it pops open instantly?)... and the pedal is beautifully detailed with Beatles-ness. There is also a set of postcards included... so anyhow, take a peek at it all! I picked up the full kit for PS3 and the Rickenbacker...
Unboxing the Samsung Go! First impressions, i LOVE the way this netbook feels in my hands, i wish all of my laptops/etc had this kind of grippy/non-slip/ruggedized texture! They’d feel far less fragile, and so much more ready to face the world (or the inside of my purse?). Also, it totally screams “bar of soap” to me… something about the extruded oversized logo text that is a bit much… makes me think of dial or irish spring. Also exciting?
Did you know this little adorable netbook that is visually quite unlike any others… is designed by Naoto Fukasawa? Designboom highlighted this not nearly publicized enough fact! But for now ~ lets take a look at all those details ~ and the fun box too! Check it out on the next page…
This post is part of the new Netbook Resource Center sponsored by Samsung ~ i've reposted it here for you, because i'm far too excited about how fun the unbox is!
I know, we're not supposed to propagate the beauty myth that thinner is better, but i just can't stop walking into the room, and pausing for a moment to look at how ridiculously thin this Samsung LED TV is! As i mentioned before, while working with Samsung on this sponsorship, i fell in love and bought one! And in all honesty, it's been amazing! Beyond the little pebble remote i showed you ~ my dad even remarked that it was "frighteningly clear", which i completely agree with - you almost feel like you can reach out and poke the people in the tv! (who are definitely larger than life on the 55").
But on the tech side of it ~ its just gorgeous ~ ridiculously thin (Wunderland War Monkey Assassin will help give you some scale... especially compared to my previously thin panasonic)... seriously its the kind of thing where it may actually be thinner than some canvases i have hanging... talk about that future where we'd have moving pictures as hanging artwork? AND widgets! the UI on these Yahoo! ConnectedTV widgets for things like twitter and youtube are just stunning... See the pics on the next page!
On silly weekend posts ~ while installing snow leopard last night ~ and when popping by CVS, i coludn't resist the cheaper of the vibrating mascaras to poke at. And to be fair, i just ran out of my favorite Shu Uemura one, so figured, why not? give it a try?... unfortunately its so goopy i'm not so much a fan... so while waiting around for the install, started pulling i apart, and making silly videos to show you too... in case you were curious what was inside that little vibrating tube... So here's the deconstruction of the Maybelline Pulse Perfection Vibrating Mascara ~ it's the more affordable drugstore cousin of the Lancome Oscillation Vibrating Infinite Powermascara, Estee Lauder TurboLash All Effects Motion Mascara, and Prescriptives Motor-Eyes Instant Action Mascara. (Isn't the naming kind of mind blowing?) Some of these you have to hold the button down to activate the vibrations, others have a twist on/off switch. I suppose if you have other toys/phones in your purse, this could be another reason why your purse/pocket/etc starts to randomly vibrate (button gets held down in there?)... and they make pocket USB vibrators that look like lipsticks, so i guess it only makes sense to make an actual mascara with the same little vibrating motor? Whether people are using these mascaras for other forms of amusement is unknown to me... but if you're curious to see what's inside, and watch it shake... video and pics on the next page!
There are flashlights ~ and there are super bright flashlights ~ and then there are super bright flashlights with legs of their own that will wrap themselves around just about anything and magnetically hold on... The Joby GorillaTorch that is coming out soon is definitely in that last category. I took it on a walk to dinner last night, and firstly, it was hard to have it NOT become a fidget toy. Secondly, the thing is BRIGHT, like stop traffic bright, or accidentally blind yourself a little if you accidentally turn it on aimed at the glossy table bright. But i suppose that should be no surprise at 65 lumens ~ and it runs on a mere 3 AA batteries (so easy to use rechargeables!) It's available for pre-order now, but i've got a few peeks at my hands on with it now! And it's got a tiny ultra=bright CREE LED bulb ~ which basically looks like a tiny dab of clear nailpolish on a circuit board...Check it out on the next page!
i'm loving this one as a backup light for emergencies and travel! (especially camping/safari-ing/etc)
Freshly launched today ~ Incase's latest incarnation of their classic iPhone Slider cases ~ Monochrome Slider Cases ~ this time with glossy tops and soft touch bottoms... while at first i wasn't sure if the color palette was for me (the colors do have fun names like celery green)... when they sent samples over, the PACKAGING just blew my mind. again. as usual. I don't know, those Incase guys are pretty much my favorite packaging folks out there these days. This time it is a clear/black matte plastic sleeve with a molded black cardboard tray that slips into it, but due to the molding won't slip all the way though... And the way the contours of the white plastic liner really highlight the case so nicely! Also, the super simple subtle little S stand is awesome ~ holding up your iphone for perfect desk viewing both horizontally and vertically. Anyhow, enough with the text ~ just go see the pics on the next page already!
It's been such a fun challenge finding things to share for this Samsung sponsored post series ~ running around my life finding unexpected inspiring beautiful tech details i may not have normally noticed or thought about that are in my every day life... today i'm excited to share the Rickenbacker 350/12V63 Liverpool 12 string electric guitar with you! (Also awesome? The color is called "Jet Glow") John Lennon, The Byrds, and Tom Petty were all known to play Rickenbacker... and really what grabbed me was the way the tuning machines are attached to the head without looking too crammed, even when there are twice as many as usual! And really it's just such a stunningly gorgeous machine ~ check out the pics on the next page!
This series has quickly evolved into an excuse for me to find beauty in the unexpected and tech related. Be it Retro Radios, Worry Stone Remotes... or even Fishing Reels? While not the first thing to jump into your mind when thinking tech ~ it's been fascinating to see how technology has changed that space, while the electric reel isn't nearly as pretty as i think it could be, it's certainly interesting. And has its huge waterproof charger port too. But as i looked at that one and was taking pictures, i quickly got distracted by the beautiful fonts and logos and other little details on an array of reels! So for this third beauty in tech post ~ here is a close up look at the details of fishing reels that caught my eye and inspired me yesterday! See the images on the next page!
Remote controls - they come in so many shapes and sizes, yet i'd never seen one quite like the extra mini pebble one that came with my Samsung LED TV. (For full disclosure - Samsung's LED TV campaign is sponsoring this post series, but they in no way knew that their ads got me looking at the new TVs enough to love it and buy one... and make the pebble remote the subject of this post! So perhaps this is less a conflict of interest, and more of a convergence of interest?)
This tiny pebble remote has a jeweled center piece which for the 7 series is blue, and the 6 series is red. It is mesmerizing how it subtly sparkles in the light... and the weirdest thing is how nice the small indented pebble shape feels in your hand, it actually reminds me a lot of those Worry Stones that originated in Ancient Greece - thin oval pieces of stone that are held between the thumb and forefinger with the thumb in the indentation... and the rubbing is said to help take your worries away. Basically its hard not to rub this remote as odd as that sounds? Now as far as practicality, it only does power, volume, and channel, so its the opposite of the huge remote that also came with the tv, but nice when you just want the basics. Unfortunately the channels don't work for my DVR, so its a bit useless, but i just love the what the design looks and feels! Isn't it about time we take more steps away from the traditional grid layouts of remotes? Take a look at more images of the pebble remote on the next page!
It's a bold move naming something/someone HERO. That's a big label to live up to! And i must say, the HTC Hero is living up to it so far... i'm kind of loving how it feels in my hand, and how beautifully they've skinned Android into HTC Sense! This was going to be an unboxing post, but it came in a white box, no real paperwork to walk me through (and it didn't really need any!)... it is totally the white label version of a mobile? (Yes, i'm completely giddy that this showed up today!)... so unboxing aside, and without getting too far into the UI side of it... this is a beautiful object to handle! And the details are just awesome! So see lots of close ups on the next page...
So, Justine checked out the launch of the HTC Hero and HTC Sense in London a few weeks back, and i've been curiously lusting since... And for those paying close attention to the differences between the original design Mike and Maaike made for the G1 and the actual G1... you'll notice the Hero is actually a little closer. So far i'm already loving the 5mgp camera, the BUTTONS, and the awesome integration of twitter/facebook/flickr... the HTC Hero just feels amazing in my hand! Only curiosity not put to rest... what's that magical white dupont coating like? They sent over this rubbery soft touch metallic pewter like color. (UPDATE: sources tell me "FYI the white non-stick coating feels exactly the same as the brown. the additive is simply there to keep the white, white. no need for it on the brown one.") I can already tell, the HTC Hero is going to be a hard one to send back at the end of testing! Anyhow, take a peek at pics on the next page!
for physical comparisons, you can also see it stacked with the G1 and iPhone 3GS. As for what i'm currently using these days... Primary is BB 8900 Secondary is iPhone 3GS... but the iPhone sim just went into the Hero for play time...
Ok, i LOVE the design details in science fiction. This morning i was so half awake, i started things off catching up on the new Syfy show Warehouse 13 to ease into things... and couldn't help but fixate on the STEAMPUNK WACOM TABLET! I mean i love all the bizarre archaic gadgetry (Wired has a nice look at them)... but its the tablet and keyboard that got me first. Also... i love how small the internet is, while looking up past steampunk keyboard, found out that the keyboard was made by Datamancer - "prestidigital datamancery & paraphrenalic technofetishism" ~ and the exact keyboard in the show is "the Sojourner keyboard I built for my girlfriend 2 Christmases ago" - and he "hope[s] the show becomes very popular so they commission me to build them some more elaborate contraptions for future seasons (I'm actually designing a Version 2.0 of my old Computational Engine PC right now with them in mind)"... So fun to hear how these shows pull in awesome design for even the tiniest details... see more pics on the next page!
it was driving me a little nuts when they made it look like the wacom was a giant touch sensitive tablet though...
Phone Lust! Crunching to get this post sorted out before i run to LAX to pick friends up... and because of that i wasn't able to make it out to London today for the HTC Hero and HTC Sense launch! Fortunately Dr. Justine (yes! my little sis is all done!!!) was able to spare a few hours, hop out of oxford, and out of the academic world to go see what all this mobile fuss was about. And get pics to show me what i was missing. As usual, you can get all the technical details on any site, but she got us those key moments and details i love seeing... like the expressions the C-level presenters have, and the presentation graphics they used... and quotes about things like Drunken Thumb and Teflon fingerprintlessness and how 'fun people make fun phones, nerdy people make nerdy phones' (yes, this is a "fun" phone). So on the next page you'll see a bunch of hands on pics of the new phone, as well as my favorite snippets of her press event experience.
As for the phone lusting ~ the new HTC Hero is like a super thin keyboardless version of the G1 (in shape!) ~ and it is running Android, with their new HTC Sense experience that takes it to a whole new level (keep in mind HTC are the guys who even skinned windows mobile to a point where i loved looking at it, and the UX, until you realize its still win mobile under there, too bad they couldn't hide everything?) ~ Its most appealing feature is that it is truly PEOPLE centered, in that instead of looking for your friends on twitter, facebook, flickr, address book, email (of various accounts)... it sorts the content by PEOPLE! So you can see all of a person's feeds/interactions with you in one place. And it sounds like it does it pretty easily too ~ get your account info in and the phone does the rest and updates it regularly and syncs people up. Now if that meant all those people i'm bad at officially putting in my address book can have their info sucked in from facebook/linkedin etc ~ that'd be awesome. (p.s. while it does apparently magically sync matching names on its own, you can decide which get paired or manually sync for people who like pseudonyms on various accounts.)
OK ~ go see the pics!
On fun random Monday posts ~ it's been feeling like SUCH a monday (and from the tweets i'm seeing, sounds like its going around) ~ and not in a good way! So, since it seems a little early for happy hour to start... how about some silly alcohol schwag? I couldn't help giggling when this Red Stripe USB key showed up from Fader/Red Strip ~ presenting "It Was Written" featuring Terry Lynn and John Hugo - it's their collaboration on five new songs celebrating jamaican music! (You can even download them for free) And at first i thought it was a half bottle and a cupcake (i never did figure out how that would make much sense, but hey! who am i to judge that?)... but i'm thinking its so you don't lose your cap when the key is in use? Also the graphics are awesome ~ love how the text is made up of pencils and rulers, etc... see the pics on the next page!
While back in Singapore i happened across some tiny transistor radios tucked away in my dad and grandmother's various drawers... the first one was exciting enough... then it was like an easter egg hunt, i just kept finding more! Luckily he was amused enough by my fascination to let me bring them home and photograph them to share with you! The tiniest details are so cool ~ from the fonts to the patterns to the pendants dangling off some of the smaller ones. For reference, that little sony is like 2" wide! I have yet to get them working yet ~ actually while writing this, just got distracted and managed to get a few open (so pics of the insides on the next page too!) ~ and looks like i'd need some interestingly sized batteries... SO, visual research on the next page, and my question to you ~ do you know more about these? Any fun stories of having these as a kid, etc? See the gallery of close ups and insides on the next page!
Have you ever seen the inside of an Aston Martin? Like REALLY seen the inside? Well i stopped by the NY presentation of the new DBS Volante at the Cooper Square Hotel last night, and out front was an aston martin literally cut in half... well stripped down and with half its shell? It was fascinating! Take a peek at the pics on the next page!
A Rolls Royce engineer's wife mentions that she doesn't know where to put her purse when she's in the car. Solution? A purse pop out section of the back seat complete with wings to support the width of the purse, and as soon as it senses your purse, it automatically has a piece that slides up to give it a little squeeze and hold it in place. Yes! I'm serious. There's a video on the next page to show you. And in case you are wondering, their design team is a tiny 10 person team in the UK, and the only woman is their color & trim specialist.
Ok so to backtrack a bit ~ this morning i was invited to the Rolls Royce 200EX preview in Beverly Hills. This concept car launched in Geneva and is currently making its worldwide debut city by city ~ and will go into production in 2010. While i've never quite been a Rolls kind of girl, i was impressed with the details, and it was fascinating to see and hear the design stories. So for this post, we'll focus on the details, and work out to the car and event itself through pictures on the next page...
So, you may have heard Mark Hoppus (yes, of Blink 182) ~ loves him some Octopus... it's even his personal logo that a family friend (Sacha, screen writer by day, artist by... amusement?) made for him... and its quickly spreading to stickers, shirts, vinyl toys, and now a limited edition laser engraved USB key. Actually only 100 USB keys... and on even more amazing things, apparently Mark is a long time NOTCOT reader, and was kind enough to toss one my way to give away to one of you!!! (Also he is an avid twitterer, and those who follow me may have noticed when i found out he was a reader.)
As for this limited edition USB key ~ 100 were made by Mojo Laboratories to promote the Mark Hoppus remix of Fall Out Boy's "America's Sweethearts". On the keys are the remix mp3, music video, a special Hoppus/Octopus pic, and a behind the photoshoot video... and a special code to get a Tshirt!
THE GIVEAWAY: Here's the deal ~ to win the key ~ leave a comment with your favorite Blink 182 or Fall Out Boy lyrics and which song they are from. And Friday midnight 5/15 EST (i'll be in NY) ~ i'll pick a random winner from the comments!
Now, if you're ready, head to the next page to see the tons of pics and Octopus info and closeups of the tiny adorable drive (yes, i'm having a hard time giving it up!) and sneak peeks at some of the contents you'll find on the drive...
