Tiles in Paris

tiles0.jpg Cleaning through my cell phone ~ i was wandering through pics from the last few trips and came across one from Paris. Really wishing i paid more attention to which store this was that we wandered by ~ possibly in the Marais? The tile patterns are so cute, colorful, simple, detailed… see more on the next page…

Bisazza: the Crystal Collection

bisazza0.jpg Firstly, i’m not really a crystals kind of girl… but for some reason Swarovski is doing some pretty irresistible stuff this year! (How stunning is the Crystal Palace?!?!?!) Bisazza has always been a fascination of mine, the way they turn tiling into quite the art form is fascinating, and the designer collaborations are always stunning. However, the one thing about tiles i never loved is how FLAT they can feel visually ~ sure you can cover incredibly curved walls with their tiny tiles, but with the new Bisazza Crystal Collection with Swarovski, the crystal tiles add this incredible depth to the tiling! (Not to mention inevitable blinged out effects as well.) To see “flat” crystals essentially is bizarrely mesmerizing up close, since you see them come to a point beneath the surface, it’s as if you’re peering into the wall… The Crystal Collection is a series of decorative patterns “bejeweled with Swarovski crystals” ~ and the most noteworthy is the Skulls & Crown pattern… I’m imagining the interior of a pool with black reflective tiles and crystal/metallic skull markers for the depths…

See images of the cocktail party last night ~ the candle and chandelier lighting create interesting light effects in combination with the Bisazza tiles~ on the next page!

p.s. With Bisazza going all pixel art, i’d love to see them collaborate with Diesel Sweeties for an awesome pixelated comic wall…

Peek at Tord Boontje for Bisazza

bisazza1.jpg As promised ~ i just got an email filled with the images of the full Tord Boontje 2009 collection for Bisazza. So, while i won't be able to make it in person, on the next page you can see the 3 new pieces that Tord Boontje designed with the beautiful Bisazza tiles. I must admit i'm a huge boontje fan for his usual beautiful nature inspired clean vectory patterns ~ and this is about as pixelated as you can get from that. I love how they look like mosaic blocks, you wouldn't necessarily guess that there are drawers and shelves and goodies hidden within them! Don't hate me for saying this (or blame the heat) ~ but the vertical pieces do remind me conceptually of that IKEA Malm headboard with the hidden roll-out shelves ~ of course with more beautiful materials and mosaics applied! I'd love to have one of these as a side table, or behind the couch... and the coffee table, filled with spirits is just breathtaking as well...

Take a look at all three pieces from various angles on the next page ~ as well as the full press release!

Tord Boontje 2009 for Bisazza

tord0.jpg On emails that make me way too excited and even closer to pushing BUY on a flight to milan... Tord Boontje + Bisazza + Veuve Clicquot? If you're in milan this week, this sounds like one definitely to check out (and please send pics!!!)

So what is it? Digital Memories - "When I look at mosaic patterns, I am immediately reminded of a pixelated image, a digital image. We use digital images from cameras and video to capture moments of life, these become our memories. The collection of mosaic for Bisazza is based on the idea to use images that trigger memories when you look at them. A pattern of sunlight filtering through the leaves of trees can remind you of a nice summer day, a picnic in the park or daydreaming in the back of a car and watching the landscape going by. These patterns become personalized memories for each viewer, we all share these memories. I applied some of these patterns, Summer Trees, Dark Waters and Night Vision, to a coffee table and two sizes commode. The pieces have a large surface area for the mosaic to work optimally and an innovative sliding mechanism that opens the intricate volume inside."

See a close up and the event flyer on the next page...

Tetris Tiles

tetristiles.jpgTetris Tiles!!! Thank you Tomas, who just emailed this in, and i've been giddy since first laying eyes on them... what game room, kitchen, bathroom, etc, can't use some tetris tiling? Although of course, every row had better have some random hole, so the rows don't disappear? And in imagining covering a wall or floor with these, i can't help but wonder whether it really is better to buy the pre-made sheets, or to place each tile one by one, by simply reaching into a bucket randomly... sure it may take ages, but then every tile has a story, and perhaps some rationale behind its placement? They are custom made in the UK from the finest italian ceramics, and while they are already available in quite the range of colors, may also become available in any pantone color of your choice....

Ooooh can you imagine Tetris Tiles in your pool??? My head is spinning with ideas of where/how to use these, see more images on the next page!
