Cow in a Box... how DO they get that moo in there? These have been around since my childhood, and are nearly extinct if nearly fruitless internet searches show that only one manufacturer seems to be left. So when i wandered into Stumasa today, i had to buy a few... and sacrificed one to be dissected and shared with you all... step by step walk through and video below! And no, discovering the simplicity of this old school toy's innards does not make it any less fun, and its still much better than its technologically driven counterparts. And for under 5$, who wouldn't want one on their desks.

While perusing ToysREvil we found this toy and had to share. I love toys with cracked out faces that make me laugh out loud. Whaleboy is the creation of illustrator Patrick Morgan, and the comic that the toy is based on is being pitched to Nickelodeon to possibly become a cartoon! Reminds me of Ren & Stimpy and Spongebob a bit. Oh and the best part? He apparently has a sidekick named "Sucka", one of those little sucker/cleaning fish! Too funny and cute. If you wanna get your hands on one of these guys check out whaleboytoy.com.
What happens when toys go save the world happy? DOMA's Acid Sweeties toys for Kid Robot. "From Argentina, where suave desserts and happy pills keep company with nauseous oil barrels and 3-D lightning bolts, street art and design collective DOMA firmly plants one foot in reality and the other in psycho-tropics. Acid Sweeties, their first mini figure series, is an absurd medley of happy colors and bright characters."

This is a limited edition "opus football table" by Eleven Forty for the super exclusive 20LTD. Only 20 were made ~ and it retails for 14,500 pounds. We previously featured Eleven Forty back in June '05. See the team's lineup below...
Svan Scooter ~ the perfect mix between the scandinavian sleek bent birch and playful scooter... it took everything in us not to jump on that and roll around barkar hangar. The one odd (or perhaps brilliant?) detail, was the use of what looked like office furniture casters for the wheels... now if only they'd make a larger one that could be used as a desk chair/studio transportation.
Nodders ~ you know, those silly things that bob their heads in cars? Well i've never been a huge fan, but this extensive and bizarre collection manufactured by B. Shackman Company is impressive... from poodles and german shepards, to hippos and lobsters... Also available at Rose and Radish.
Endorphins are the feel good hormones... you know you love em... they give you that happy high. And who would have thought that you could sculpt them out of resin for a similar effect? Well the pictures made me smile enough... but i just received the sweetest package from Dave Pressler today with a set of 4 Endorphins from his latest show at Munky King ~ and as much as i love collectible toys, i HAD to open one... its living just below my monitor next to my mimobot... and in reality ~ that grin is even more contagious than you can imagine, when you can actually hold them in your hands. Big thanks to Dave, these endorphins gave me just the energy boost i needed today!
Rayman's Rabbids in combination with the Wii changed my life. (And now there is also a wii off to change Pres Rodriguez's life out in Florida ~ CONGRATS! to our wii winner). That being said, anyone who has yet to experience the insanity of the Rabbids on the wii, get to it! So, i finally did a mini shoot with my vinyl Rabbids... and they were too fun not to share, more below.
Only thing better than classic surrealist/pop art... and legos... are surrealist/pop art made of legos, in an exhibition, with drunken lego wander around the gallery. Although not new, Art Craziest Nation ran at the Walker Art Gallery in 2005-2006 - by The Little Artists (John Cake and Darren Neave)... and i just found it on my latest lego addiction, Brothers Brick. Above are some of my favorites ~ Dali's Lobster Phone ~ and Warhol's Money. Few other fun ones below...
One last one for the lonelier or more playful Valentine's Day people... OhMiBod turned up on .org a week or so ago, and we were intrigued. And conceptually its really pretty brilliant ~ basically its a vibrator that takes audio input and vibrates to the rhythm. For all your concert going kids, you know that feeling of standing right next to the sub? Now imagine taking that vibration you feel and concentrating it into this device... and aiming that wherever you please.
So two days before Valentine's, this box shows up containing the OhMiBod, the pink garter, the 'softskin sleeve', and a t-shirt. (unboxing images below) They've got some nice clean branding and packaging ~ and even provide itunes' playlists for songs that work especially well.
Chinese New Year AND Valentine's Day right around the corner... stopped by the Munky King 3rd Anniversary and CNY party in Chinatown~ and welcoming in the year of the pig, they even had limited edition trading card sized glicee prints by Luke Chueh, Thomas Han, and Amanda Visell. But what really caught my eye was the PlasticGod Buddha... love the hands. (also found a video of it on youtube below!). Adorably cute store in the middle of one of the chinatown plazas which are really getting far more hipster filled relative to the old school chinese restaurants and stores i remember as a kid. Lots of pics below to give you a feel for the space...
Manuella's elephants and bunnies (also ducks and dogs exist).... brain child of Merav Flam, graduate of Bezalel Academy for Art and Design Jerusalem... and i'm smitten not only by these creatures, but also by the motivation behind the line... "With children in mind, her unique designs reflect her own longing for childhood without digital and electronic toys... 'Manuella' - is reminiscent of the mechanical system that was used a long time ago to operate dolls, musical boxes, and toys." Now if that doesn't hit you somewhere in your laptop toting, cell phone attached, wii loving being... i give up, go buy your kid an Ugly Doll.
But i have this habit of always shopping for kids toys (some of which admittedly i end up buying myself) ~ and having a few products in mind for all of those last minute baby showers that keep popping up, and to find the perfect gift is hard, but it will be hard to go wrong showing up with one of these Manuella Elephants.
Just in time for Valentine's Day ~ FORM 6 ~ the latest in designer vibrators from Jimmy Jane. Waterproof with cordless recharging (check out its handy dock below), a seamless coat of silicon, varying digital vibration modes, and engineered for sound isolation... but really, its got some gorgeously sleek curves.
No it doesn't vacuum, unless you program it to do so. But this one goes on the list of launches i read about before i got to CES, and was still impressed enough by it that i needed to post it after playing with it.
iRobot Create. I was quite a fan of the give your hamster wheels ~ as in it runs in its ball, and that drives the Create... and the robotic arms are pretty fun too. In a nutshell, the folks that brought you the roomba, unleashed a streamlined programmable version, basically the ideal starting point for future engineers, programmers, robotics geniuses everywhere...
AND not a bad deal for $99! (use coupon code 'createces' to save 30$ off the usual 129$) ~ and for normal roombas, 20% off with code 'ces222' in the iRobot Store.
If there's one thing i learned this christmas, it's that you cannot leave RUGenius alone with a printer and internet access all alone in oxford tending to her lab. After the amazing cardboy calendar, she proceeded to find lots of other "print, cut, + build" toys on the internet and filled the lab with them (and my inbox with fun pics of them). So this one is for her.
With the holidays behind us now, venturing into 2007 we're already faced with Valentine's Day?!? So if you remember Swedish Lelo's pleasure objects, and also their infamous design house, jeans, etc company Acne that is making its way to the states lately... you'll be excited to see their latest special edition NEA Black Pearl Valentine. "In collaboration with multi-talented designer Jesper Kouthoofd – one of the founders of Sweden’s creative powerhouse ACNE - LELO is proud to introduce the NEA Black Pearl Valentine. With LELO’s basic NEA acting as the canvas, Jesper Kouthoofd has chosen to graphically interpret the romanticized aesthetics of an archetypal sweet heart tattoo. The resulting artwork hints at an age of innocence - vintage 1950 – with undertones of a tender naivety reserved for the realm of pristine love. Bound to be the source of many a giggle and plenty of joy is the word ‘love’, naughtily located on the tip of the pleasure point and handwritten in pure lipstick on a mirror-style."
