Bodum 2009

bodum1.jpg Bodum. There’s something so irresistible about the way they do glass… and now there is even double walled porcelain! And a clear glass stovetop kettle! And planters! And baguette tubes? The 2009 catalog is beautifully laid out too, with cheeky typographic bits… Take a peek at some of my favorite pages on the next page… and view the catalog here.

The Standard + Quiksilver Party

standardla00.jpg So far you’ve seen the close ups of the Standard + Quiksilver Boardshorts and vending machine ~ the packaging/experience/etc… but as i was photoshopping my way through my pictures, there were SO many more filled with fun absurdities, design details, quintessential LA… everything from the vintage incredible hulk wallpapered gym bathroom with green tinted mirror… to the number to call for encouragement… to the kids that perk up and pose in the pool… to the bikini girl with her red chanel bag traipsing through the downtown LA parking lot… to the red bed pods… to the tubs of flip flops which couldn’t make a matching pair unless you had two left feet… to the huge twister board… and the photobooth with vintage mannequins… and so much more i couldn’t bare not to share with you! So take a peek at this stunning LA saturday up at the roof of The Standard Downtown LA launch party scene with Quiksilver!

p.s.
on unphotographed things… it was hilarious that beyond water guns and beach balls there were even cupcakes and jello shots circulating… good times…

The Standard + Quiksilver Boardshorts

theshorts0.jpg There is really only so much you can get about an actual user experience, packaging, presentation of a product from press photos. You saw what i had to show you about the launch in the previous post… For the rest you just have to go play with them in their natural setting! So for part one of the posts from The Standard Downtown LA’s rooftop pool party with Quiksilver to launch their boardshort collaboration ~ let’s focus on the SHORTS! And the vending machine! And the people wearing them! And then on to the rest later… I was lucky enough to get a chance to sneak away from the party to play with samples in one of the Standard rooms ~ so actual close up pics of the adorable pouches and details on the next page too! Take a peek at it all on the next page!

P.S.
I wish they had them smaller than a 30! The feel amazing ~ dry super fast ~ and are so cute with the retro upside down labels, pouches, special buttons, and more… the bikini is adorable too (subtle stripes, oh so soft, cutest buttons ever on your bum)… and to purchase them, its ok if you’re not by the pool vending machine ~ they are also on the Standard online store!

Arkitip 0048 + McGinness + Incase

mcg.jpg I always feel a little giddy when things that make me so happy end up collaborating so beautifully… Arkitip + Ryan McGinness + packaging from Incase??? #0048 looks so good! Watching these collaboration i couldn’t help but wish that there were some McGinness Incase products launching as well! But i can make do with being excited that Incase is truly an amazing packaging company in so many ways… from reusable packaging like my favorite messenger bag, iphone cases, and more… to gorgeous packaging anytime they send things out… to the box on this latest issue of Arkitip. Even cuter than the contents, is the white glove video they made to show it off… check out more images and the video on the next page!

Carlos Ramos “India”

india1.jpg On stunning art shows coming up ~ just got a sneak peek at Carlos Ramos’ upcoming show “India” at the Corey Helford Gallery - this LA artist had the solo show “Natural History Museum Part 1” last year ~ and this one looks to be just as promising! From the press release: “Corey Helford Gallery is proud to present “India”, a solo exhibition of new works by Los Angeles artist Carlos Ramos. In 2008, Ramos transformed the gallery into an epicenter of flora and fauna with his stunning “Natural History Museum Part 1” exhibition, and for “India”, he continues to dazzle audiences with a unique collection of works celebrating this enchanting South Asian republic. Ramos weaves his fascination with Indian music, culture and history into a magnificent display of narratives that span from the Ganges River and the statue of Bahubali to the Mahaparinirvana Temple. His characters come to life in more contextualized environments than before, and the addition of gold leaf adds opulence and splendor to his vibrant cel-vinyl works. Open to the public, the reception for “India” will take place on Saturday, August 15 from 7 to 10pm, and the show will be on view until September 3, 2009.” Check out a peek at the works on the next page!

Prometheus Springs: Capsaicin Spiced Elixir

prometheus1.jpg Prometheus Springs: Capsaicin Spiced Elixir. Firstly, what a mouthful. Secondly, check out their flavors - Lemon Ginger, Lychee Wasabi, and Pomegranate Black Pepper (intriguing aren’t they?) Thirdly, awesome upside down pentagon of 5 stars around a crowned dragon ouroboros encircling what looks like a simplified masonic symbol for a logo (should we read into this? or is it simply a symbolic mashup?)… also beautiful photography and they even have a video of the bottling process! I’m impressed… also amused that most of their websites sections are wordpress - and they are all social media’d out with the facebook, twitter, flickr, vimeo… this occultish NY based drink line has captured my attention tonight… Take a look at more of the visual assets as well as the bottling video on the next page!

Dominic Jones Jewellery

dominic1.jpg Rose thorns… i never realized how much they can resemble fangs/sharks teeth… until staring at this gorgeous jewelry collection by Dominic Jones - Who is he? Well the NYT’s The Moment sums it up nicely - “Dominic Jones, the 24-year-old London jewelry designer and club kid about town, is a daily must-see with his bright shock of hair, which on any given hour is blue, purple or red. He’s also getting attention for his high fashion Goth jewelry line, which is backed by his friend Alice Dellal, the model and “It” girl.” Take a peek at my favorites on the next page…

Lotte Berk Method Imagery

lotteberk1.jpg What a beautiful Sunday it is! On random inspiration (and i know, i’ve been a bit all over the place finding - or searching - for visual inspiration and feeding my insatiable curiosity just about anywhere lately - thanks for coming along for the ride as i figure things out while posting)… i never thought i’d be posting images from an early 70’s exercise book here! But as i was checking out the pdf of the now out of print (but ebook available) Lotte Berk Method: Exercises for a Vital Body by Lydia Bach, i just couldn’t get over how beautiful and artistic the imagery was ~ from the photography to the illustrations of the muscles… So naturally i had to share!

Oh and for some quick background on how i ended up at this at 3am on a saturday night… well you know how exercise fads come and go… and for some time now both the Exhale and Bar Method classes have been spreading quickly! Toning and strengthening your core and improving flexibility ~ making grown men and women twitch and weep while doing the tiniest of motions ~ giving you long lean muscles through low impact exercises mixing everything from modern ballet to yoga to orthopedic exercises… the Lotte Berk book even focuses on pelvic movements of sex as an influence on core strengthening. So while i was researching these various trends (a friend was recently working on me to come to Exhale classes, and i tried a few Bar Method classes a few years back) - i turns out that many of these “new” method all evolved directly from the Lotte Berk Method from the 70s ~ which was originated by Lotte Berk, a german dancer and teacher who developed the series of exercises to help her own recovery, and continued refining and teaching them in her studio in the UK, where Lydia Bach (author of the book) discovered her, loved her methods and licensed her name and methods, bringing them to the US. The internet says that the Exhale and Bar Method founder even came from running/teaching at Lotte Berk studios, so its no surprise that they are evolutions of the same methods from the 70s. Anyhow, that was my little random research last night ~ take a peek at the images on the next page!

p.s.
loving the workouts to slip into workaholic days with too much time spent at the computers…

Standard Boardshorts by Quiksilver

quicksilver1.jpg I’ve never lusted for board shorts before, well not men’s anyhow… but i must say these Standard Boardshorts by Quiksilver are tempting! Not to mention they are sold in VENDING MACHINES (which are really all the rage lately) ~ and come in an “odor resistant waterproof travel bag” ~ and much like the standard, the labels are upside down (and adorably retro styled too)… but perhaps most unique of all? Inside each waistband is a list of addresses… a quick tips city guide precisely curated by Natas Kaupas. With a limited edition of 250 of each product, and so much attention to detail, this premier collaboration between The Standard and Quiksilver is stunning.

Now as for the style itself, these are “based on the original retro design from Echo Beach era - New wave/post punk style first pioneered by pro surfer Danny Kwock.” There is also a “Standard Issue” Bikini for us ladies, but i’m curious to see how the shorts fit girls too… You can find them at The Standard Shop, as well as the poolside vending machines at the hotels. Also exciting? “Official launch event will be a pool party on the rooftop of The Standard Downtown LA on Aug 8th and from Aug 8-16, the hotel will have “ECHO BEACH RETROSPECTIVE, 1978-1982: Surf Culture Art Exhibition” show. Includes art, photography, paintings, film, vintage beachwear, and surfboards curated by Will Pennartz of The Surf Gallery. Art show admission is free.” ~ See you there! As for now, see lots of pics on the next page of all the gorgeous details!

Design + Fishing Reels

reel1.jpgBeauty in Technology post series sponsored by Samsung’s new LED TVs! Post #3 of 6 in this series exploring random beauty in technology, NOTCOT style.

This series has quickly evolved into an excuse for me to find beauty in the unexpected and tech related. Be it Retro Radios, Worry Stone Remotes… or even Fishing Reels? While not the first thing to jump into your mind when thinking tech ~ it’s been fascinating to see how technology has changed that space, while the electric reel isn’t nearly as pretty as i think it could be, it’s certainly interesting. And has its huge waterproof charger port too. But as i looked at that one and was taking pictures, i quickly got distracted by the beautiful fonts and logos and other little details on an array of reels! So for this third beauty in tech post ~ here is a close up look at the details of fishing reels that caught my eye and inspired me yesterday! See the images on the next page!

Activate Drinks Redesign

activate0.jpg Sometimes even more fascinating than packaging design is watching how it evolves and becomes more engaging and usable! Well on packages awaiting when i got back from SDCC - there was a case of these redesigned Activate Drinks. If you recall, i wrote about Activate Drinks about a year ago ~ basically Activate Drinks are the ones that are bottles of water with caps filled with vitamins/flavors, and you turn the cap to “activate” the drink. Shake it and you’re good to go ~ freshly mixed vitamins in water, because apparently vitamins lose their potency in water? Anyhow, take a look at the more ergo-friendly cap and cute droplet box graphics on the next page!

Nissan Cube Mailer

cube1.jpg I can’t even remember the last time a piece of mail made me literally JUMP (and yes, maybe shriek slightly…) - and please do NOT take this as a challenge! But i was however intrigued enough to share this super simple design with you ~ complete with video so you can experience it too. Nissan Cube - well done. You got me. As much as i hate cubist cars, this is just too fun a use of paper and rubberbands not to share… so check out video and pics on the next page!

baz1.jpg After the last post on the Bazaarium ~ while hanging out at SDCC i ended up going back to the booth and doing a bit of shopping for the things i just couldn’t resist… and/or needed to show you close up! Anyhow browse it all on the next page!
