Kim Family Art Auction

kimfamily.jpg
It was a tragedy what happened to James Kim, loving husband, father, and CNET Senior Editor, and it’s truly amazing all he did to care for his wife, Kati Kim, and the couple’s two daughters, Penelope, 4, and Sabine, seven months. For all the design lovers, you probably know their store Doe SF.

Design Sponge just featured the Kim Family Benefit and Craft Auction. Over 40 different artists have contributed auction items in a wide range of media. You’ll find paintings, prints, ceramics, soft toys, jewelery, paper goods, home decor and more. 100% of the auction proceeds will go to the Kim Family Fund. Bidding will begin January 3rd and end January 7th.

Emil Kozak ~ Avant Gandhi

emillab.jpg
Emil Kozak is my obsessive inspiration for tonight ~ from these skateboards he did for the LAB, Hulger phones, beautiful photography of his travels, to playful self portraits ~ i just can’t seem to get enough of his work right now. Originally from a small town in Denmark, this graphic design genius surfs and skates his way around the world, but his studio is Barcelona based. I’ve been going through every section of his site over and over, and a collection of the pieces which inspire me most are below, but really - go browse every nook of emilkozak.com, and try not to drool on your computer when your jaw drops at his work.

Daniel Grafik

danielgrafik.jpg
There has been a trend of wall stickers and wallpaper recently - by trend i might mean overkill… oh and dont forget wallpaper in the shape of silhouettes, etc. So that being said, it takes a lot to get me excited about something in this category lately… so enter, german, Daniel Grafik - a brilliantly talented illustrator/designer, who has taken some less traditional characters, mixed them with some more traditional wallpapers, and there are some really fun ones in the collection (see more images below). Also that particular stamp set - LOVE the crazy exclamatory speech bubble of sorts, not to mention that little squirty squid like fellow.

DL Art Noveau

dlartnou.jpg
D.L & Co, the “Modern alchemists and purveyors of curious goods” i’ve written about previously - enticed me into their dark mysterious world of curiosities in what i’d normally consider an over-flashy site (the reflection on black is slightly overused in the nav i think… hurts my head) ~ and gotten me hooked somewhere between their calming music and their Art Noveau collection as it keeps morphing between black and red versions… you must admit there’s something very tord boontje about these etchings… This collection of fragrant candles were inspired by the fin-de-siecle.

Gonzo Photography

gonzo.jpg
I want to grab my camera, jump in my car, grab some friends, head up the coast - and see what adventures find me. (Don’t worry, i wouldn’t leave the the sites behind, i’d just bluetooth my pearl internet to my laptop and be good to go anywhere?)

But seriously - found on .org, Tarsh posted this Hunter S. Thompson exhibition running at M+B Gallery in LA, and as you go through the pics, you will find it hard to resist questioning your life~ because the energy and composition and colors - there’s just far too much inspiration in those prints. For me anyhow.

That first picture - makes me think of a time before the internet. And the far right - is “fishing with guns”.

The Trunk

stumpy.jpg
When is a tree not a tree? Or is a tree still a tree if its chopped to a stump, and then covered in polycarbonate that is screened with cow prints? I’m not sure exactly - but these were strangely appealing… instead of making that next tree into firewood, coat it in steel and use it as a stool, side table, or a coffee table base? “The inside is the European oak wood dried in a special dryer for 2 months. Then it’s covered in steel sheet or in polycarbonates with silk screened images of tree, grass or leaves. The bottom surface of the trunk has a felt protection, so it doesn’t scratch the floor.” Produced by Malafor Small Laboratory of Forms. For more info, contact Gosia I. Korsakowski at bluebellgk-at-yahoo.com - more pics below!

Vinyl Toy Network

vintoymain.jpg
Stopped by the Vinyl Toy Network Holiday Show in Pasadena this weekend, and got a chance to meet up with all the folks of Pop Cling ~ and it was really fun to get to check out all their new decks and stickers in person (you may remember my flower girl review?)… the quality of these decks are amazing and really the perfect gift for art lovers that need a little extra something to hang on their walls, since i can’t imagine using such beautiful pieces for much else! They just launched the new Jeremyville decks, and have a LOT of new stickers since they showed off their first collection in our gallery. More images to feel like you were there - below.

DB Clay and Bro for Sis

bfs-xmas-camo-ng1q.jpg
Holiday tees that are edgy. Who would have thought it was possible… or who would have thought you’d ever see festive holiday wear on notcot?!?! Well consider me completely smitten, and craving this green Christmas Camo tee. I think we might have just found the best holiday present … even comes in a great box - is one of those insanely soft, perfectly flattering, long tees… and they are all hand printed and unique due to the fact that “All of these shirts were printed flat with oversized screen print. Expect the screen print to be placed in a different spot every single time so expect the shirt you order to vary slightly from image above. No two are the same.” - and they have nice printed “tags”, and that extra little something, in the form of a nice pinned on Brother for Sister tag as well as a “small, square & plaid holiday ribbon stitched on the backside hem” for that extra festive touch. (Pictures of all and more below)

But wait - there’s more? The story behind this duo is quite adorable as well. As the tag explains so nicely “Year round, db clay produces uniques wallets called pocket art & Shade offers top quality women’s apparel that’s cut to fit-well & cover the body. Brother for Sister festive tees are the first collaboration between these two home grown brands. The founders of db clay & Shade are literally brother & sister.” And the shirts are all limited to 500 prints. They sent over the red Peppermint Crook and the white/creme Branches with Bows ~ and they really are a great tee ~ but that green one is something special.

p.s. for all the screen printing types - Brother & Sister has a gorgeous blog with really fun images of their printing facility and a lot of behinds the scenes of the shirts…

Evan Hecox - Chocolate Skateboards

hecoxDecks.jpg I’ve been a fan of Evan Hecox ever since my buddies in San Diego introduced me to his work a few years ago. I couldn’t wait to get that rad clock at Target with his illustration on it. Now I’m loving this set of decks he did for Chocolate Skateboards… so crisp and clean. Check out his website for more of his work… I only wish there was more there to look at!

Buy your DIY

photojojo.jpg
Ever have one of those days where you feel like making something, but don’t quite feel up to the planning, scheming, home depot-ing? Well for those of you who fall into the “buy your DIY” category, or who need that “personal gift” for someone… PhotoJojo just sent me their latest Photo Blocks Kit (where you can create mix and match puzzle like images), instant postcard photo frames (love the plastic quality of these! and will survive all types of weather!), and their magnetic photo rope.

So, get crafty! I’m in love with their Photorope currently - but i’m a sucker for magnets (never quite did outgrow that phase)… and i’m thinking of coating those Photo Blocks with wrapping paper on one side, and a letter and pictures/collage on the other as a gift. (hm, if i give this to you, act surprised!)
