Fendi ‘Paint-Your-Own’ Artist Baguette

fendidiy1.jpgWow. Fendi. “Artist Baguette”, freshly launched for a mere $1300, a new stark white version of their classic - designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi in 1997 - in coated canvas? And it comes with 10 Pantone Universe markers! It sure looks like they are taking a page from the current trends with the vinyl toy blanks… or coloring books/placemats/other children oriented goodies. And in fact quite a few purse sites seem a bit appalled by the whole thing (Purse Blog, Bag Snob, etc)…

Anyhow, putting the pricetag aside, lets think about this from an arts perspective… there is a LOT of collaboration potential here. Can you imagine getting a few of these into the hands of some talented artists and toy designers, and letting them have their way with them? The potential to merge a fashionable classic accessory with art could have some very interesting results (which could also be a way to increase that initial investment, not to mention actually create an even more unique one of a kind designer clutch). So i must admit i’m tempted, although i might have to hold out till i can draw on my own Birkin… See many more images after the jump!

p.s.
It seems like this is one of those situations where packaging makes a world of difference… if it were presented as a gorgeous new white clutch and nothing more, would anyone dare take a sharpie to it? Or would the die hard fashionistas complain about the ridiculousness? And it’s not *just* a white canvas bag, it still has all the detailed stylings of a classic Baguette, and additionally has a playfully multicolored cartoon-like lining!

UPDATE 03.13.08 - i walked by a Fendi store, and couldn’t help myself, so went in and bothered them to show me the bag… that box is FAR bigger than i expected, and the bag is quite hideous… not nice to the touch at all… the coated canvas reminded me more of random art school creations than a designer bag.

Teori

0305teori1.jpgNOTCOT Note: Here’s another article from Anna Corpron of Sub-Studio!

Saw these gorgeous vases by Teori over at Designklub. Teori is a Japanese design collective with a focus on bamboo household objects. The craftsmanship in each piece from their Laminated Bamboo Lumber Project is beautiful, but what I love most are the surprising details, like the split in the wood that becomes the opening for the vase, or the slight peak in the bamboo tray (after the jump) that functions as a chopstick rest.

Ben Sherman Pacman Blinky

benshermanpac.jpgThis is an odd silly post, i know, but i couldn’t resist. These Ben Sherman slip ons are super cheap ($40 on sale!)… and they were just so cute, they made me laugh when i saw them. They are Ben Sherman. They are black and white (with the ONE red ghosty). They are covered in Pacman Blinkies! (or is it Blinkys?). And some silly part of me half wants them. They are just too cute and silly. More pics below.

Polite In Public - The Photobooth

politeinpublic.jpgPolite In Public. The standard for photobooth/party photography has just been raised dramatically. Imagine this ~ you show up at a party, and in one section you see a crazy well lit open closet of sorts with people lined up… as you get closer you see that the “closet” is lined with white fur and has gold port holes in it, as well as a rack of clothes… and people are trying them on and striking poses within it! That was the scene at the Dussault party i went to back in November 07, and combined with having half of melrose closed off and covered in astroturf, with fake “snow” fluttering down on us, a wooden hottub and girls in leaderhosen dancing about, i didn’t think twice about this set up at first. Until i got home and noticed the “Polite In Public” sticker in my purse with a url on it. That “closet” was apparently the new generation of photobooths, and the images were unlike any i’d seen. Flash forward a few months, and when my friend’s pics from the Obama Rally for Super Tuesday had some more great Polite In Public shots, i had to take note.

Well, playing with ideas for perhaps the next blogfest or maybe a NOTCOT party, i finally gave them an email, and was surprised to find that Polite In Public is the brainchild of Joe Rubenstein and Joe Miller, two SCAD graduates. Joe R, 31, is a painting and film double major, and Joe M, 29, is a Graphic Design major and Computer Artist… and with backgrounds in lighting/cinematography and photography, it’s no surprise that after trying out their photobooth concept at their own myspace publicized house party (early 2007), the idea spread fast throughout LA and before they knew it they were flying around the country going on tour and doing jobs for PlayBoy, Verizon, Svedka, Dussault, Mercedes, Burton Snowboards, The Obama Campaign, Universal Home Entertainment, 944 Magazine, and GenArt among others…. More info about how these are set up, and pictures behind the scenes after the jump!

Incase MacBook Pro Hardshell

hardshell.jpgIncase sent over a MacBook Pro Hardshell case in Plum a few weeks ago (i spaced, and the pics of this review got momentarily lost in the pending MT posts, apologies!) ~ if you recall, it was in that gorgeous press kit! So below you can check out pics of it in person (and how nicely my NOTCOT sticker subtly shows through!) as well as images and info from the catalog of this *coming soon* case. Currently only the Incase Hardshell cases for Macbooks are available on their site. Additionally there is a video walkthrough from Incase on how to properly put one on! See all the details below.

If Saul Bass did Star Wars?

saulbassstar.jpg36 year old bhilmers of youtube has created a star wars movie intro channeling his inner Saul Bass, using “Machine” by the Buddy Rich Band off the album Big Swing Face (1967)… and it’s pretty sweet for any Saul Bass lovers out there (who’s not?). Embedded after the jump!

Also apologies for the quietness yesterday ~ my macbook pro is seriously freaking out (perhaps since its nearing its 1 year bday?) and also lost one of its feet ~ and firefox has been a ram suck… so trying out Firefox 3 beta 3 now… *fingers crossed*… and then tried Arctic Root pills yesterday which also totally threw my whole day off in a not at all good way. So basically, its been a very odd beginning of the week… watch the video below!

Capetown Design Indaba Expo

Front_Image.jpgNOTCOT Note: Where would i be without incredible readers like Gillian Benjamin, who emailed in an incredible post submission covering the Capetown Design Indaba that ran from Saturday 23 February to Friday 29 February? (I am extremely impressed, she even created all these beautiful images to go with the post without any prompting!) Read on to see what design finds she discovered…

Last week Cape Town was brimming with creative energy as the 5th annual Design Indaba Expo took place. Featuring everything from industrial design to quirky ceramic pieces and reinterpreted African curio kitsch, the Expo showcased the best homegrown talent to both local and international audiences. Each year the event seems to grow a little bigger - a sure sign of South Africa’s blossoming creative talent. Following global trends, the focus on craft and the hand-made was definitely visible.

CoolHunting Papabubble Video

papbubble.jpgPapabubble. I was just watching the CoolHunting video (embedded below for easy viewing!) interviewing the candy makers at the new NY store, and it was incredible. I feel like those kids in the candy store, face pressed against my monitor drooling over the incredible candy making process ~ turning a simple mixture of sugar, water, and glucose combined with flasks of coloring and flavoring ~ into what looks like delicious candies, and perhaps just as fun, the perfect medium for sculpting random dioramas out of (as well as classics like Gehry’s cardboard wiggle chair)! Truly impressive is watching how all of the candy is made by hand, down to the mixing in of coloring and stretching to aerate until its more translucent. With stores in Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Tokyo, the NY store is the first in the US.

Beertender

beertender.jpg Alcohol and design collaboration is not a new thing, especially not when it comes to Heineken… but this Beertender which is basically a mini at home/office/studio tap for the mini kegs in collaboration with Krups is an interesting product to essentially ‘dock’ your mini keg and have it good to go for 30 days of perfect draught beer. Details that grabbed me were also their site design and graphics for the instructions, as well as their interesting approach to entering your birthday for proof of age… see screenshots after the jump!

UPDATE - although not new to euros - “The Heineken Beertender we first wrote about almost four years ago is finally getting its US launch tomorrow, March 1. The beertender is a special for-your-home tap that takes in four-liter Heineken DraughtKegs and dispenses via the tap, for a reasonably authentic home beer experience. It’ll be exclusively available at Williams-Sonoma stores starting tomorrow for $299, and move into a wider release schedule at the start of April.” says Gizmodo

Doonesbury - Poetry of Obama

doonesbury08.jpgOn random things i’ve found myself following lately, its been fascinating to watch so many creatives (from street art to comics to hollywood) finding different ways to express their support for Obama, as well as his impressively nicely designed visual campaign (come on, you know you noticed that his infamous CHANGE font looks nearly identical to Chanel’s signature font)… So on the latest creative outlet visually voicing an opinion, Doonesbury’s “Poetry of Barack Obama” and “The Prose of Hillary Clinton” classes causing a stir on the fictitious Walden campus have been quite an amusing thread… Check out the strips so far in order below!

Nendo

0227nendo1.jpgNOTCOT Note: Here’s another article from Anna Corpron of Sub-Studio!

nendo is a Japanese design firm run by Oki Sato. I’m loving his work, especially the products in his 1% project (only 100 pieces of each product were made - “to give owners the chance to experience the joy of owning 1%” - nice!).

The Fruit-Template (from the 1% project) puts the fruit on display, and moves away from the idea of a bowl by having the fruit plug into its similar shape. Tile Plants is an attempt to move us away from the negative association of grout lines (dirt/mold) and to make associations with growth and plant life.

The Slacker Chair

slackerchair.jpg Ok perhaps chair wasn’t quite the right word for the Slacker… its really Fredrik Olsson and and Sam Sihvonen’s Slacker ‘throne’… part throwback to viking times… part wide comfy lounger… and part gamer etchings? With wooden engraved skulls and “Game Over” messaging along the side, there’s no mistaking this for an ancient relic. Fredrik Olsson and Sam Sihvonen are currently attending the master program at the School of Design and Crafts at Göteborg University in Sweden, and this piece was just exhibited at the Stockholm Furniture Fair… “Our aim was to try pushing the usual design furniture aesthetics to a more personalized look and load it with sentimental value. We have based the design on how we as teenagers sat while playing video games or acting as slackers. The chair is low with a stretched out upholstered seat. The design mix the styles of Scandinavian crafted woodwork with video games aesthetics resembling an Egyptian pharaoh throne.” Only thing i think is missing? Perhaps some fabric options and a side table with engraved cheat codes and holsters for your various controllers (and your beer?). See close ups after the jump!

Mobius Climber

mobiusclimb1.jpgMobius Climbers from Landscape Structures! Is there simpler more intriguing surface? My future backyard will definitely need one of these… essentially it is a giant sheet of annodized aluminum with rock climbing styled hand holds so kids (or you) can climb up, down, and all around any side (well, i guess its only really ONE side) of it… It is available in 4 configurations to accommodate various budgets ~ 3, 6, 7, and 12 panel options. My only disappointment with this is that you can’t climb a full loop and go around and around since the two ends go into the ground (so really this isn’t a mobius strip so much as a crazily bent sheet), but with a little imagination i supposed you can assume that where these go into the ground they pop out into another yard and continue the loop. Also cool could have been if it was in a loop AND you could unzip it down the middle for an even larger mobius strip! More images after the jump!
