Mu Pan Origamu at Papershapers

origamu.jpg Origamu ~ origami Mu Pan style (cut, fold, then paint!) ~ was another extraordinary stand out at the Scion Space’s Giant Robot curated Papershapers show. This multitalented Brookyn based artist took the theme of historical and mythological characters from his paintings and had them take over the Scion Space ~ the looks of awe on the people crowded around them was equally fascinating to watch… And i just found his flickr of personal pics from the set up and of some of the characters in his yard! See more closeups on the next page!

Hunter Stabler at Papershapers

hunter0.jpg Hunter Stabler, your work literally made my jaw drop, and my xacto knife hand tingle a little… i think some of the most amazing art blows your mind in person even when you’ve seen a dozen images of the piece… and every time you walk by it grabs you all over again with new details. At the Scion Space last night ~ the Giant Robot curated Papershapers show was nothing short of epic, and every artist there could have easily been the only artist showing and it would have been incredible ~ in combination it was inspiration overload.

But back to Hunter Stabler. OMG. The intricacy of his multilayered cutouts ~ the shadows they created ever so slightly lifted in their framing ~ the remnants and slightest imperfections of cutting and pen and pencil marks remaining were leaving the viewers in constant debate about whether he used laser cutters or xacto knifes (for the record, he’s a hand cutter)… and i must admit that seeing the pieces that weren’t cut out next to those that were, made me feel like they were unfinished! So take a look at some of his pieces from the show, and the DETAIL, it’s pretty amazing… pics on the next page!

In LA with the 2010 Prius

prius0.jpg Ooooooh car lust. Was giddily surprised when i was picked up by one of the 2010 Prius Prototypes tonight to go check out the Scion/GR Papershapers show tonight ~ more on that later ~ but the car… in person… SO cute. SO quiet. And so many little details to gush over ~ but really, maybe part of me just really wants a car with a solar roof?!?!?! The displays and iconography are beautifully mesmerizing… The shifter is strangely small and toy like… almost like a travel mouse? (really thin and easily to wrap your fingers right over) It’s also tauntingly placed where even as a passenger i was so tempted to shift it (but i didn’t!). The toyota logo has a blue outline to it (it was a coincidence that this car was blue, the logo colors do not always match the paint colors) ~ apparently these will be on all of the upcoming hybrids (and the Lexus ones in red). And the angularity of the rear and sharper lines on the sides made me far more drawn to this latest design… so tempting! For more real info on the new Prius, take a peek at their site and for more real world pics, see the next page!

Ok i’m a bit deliriously tired at the moment ~ but wanted to get something up to show you! And for a sneak peek at the truly epic Scion/GR Papershapers show, see the images here ~ i’ll make more logical posts out of those tomorrow!

Chocolat Factory

chocolatfactory1.jpg Mmmmm chocolate. Beautifully packaged chocolate. Dare i say the packaging is even nicer than the contents? SO, pictures of some of the Singapore Chocolat Factory stores have been circulating the web quite a bit ~ and when i ran into the one at Changi Airport, how could i not grab some for the 18 hour flight? Ok, well the chocolate rain (cocoa powder with the watering can spout) isn’t easy for immediate consumption, its packaging was too fun not to show you… and of course they got all uppity and wouldn’t let me take any pics in the store, so i guess it worked, i had to BUY the stuff instead!

Tiny bit of background? Read up more about this Spanish Chocalatier, Chocolat Factory on their site. But for the REALLY fun stuff? Check out the poster, packaging close ups, looks at the chocolate and more on the next page!

Bell & Ross 01-92 Carbon Fiber

bellross0.jpgMmmmmm carbon fiber. But have you ever seen it COMPRESSED? into a block… and them formed into a watch body? Sure the Monocle products were fun, but when introduced to Robert of Bell & Ross, and this beautiful BR 01-92 Carbon Fiber watch (available Nov 2009) ~ i was mesmerized. And ironically he claimed that there isn’t enough interest from the female demo for carbon fiber (so, no smaller sized carbon fiber beauties for us)!!! Yet Julie of LAist and i couldn’t take our eyes (and fingers) off this watch! The details are gorgeous, perhaps even more so in person than in these pictures… but i blame the flowing champagne and my attempt to shoot pictures while carrying on a conversation… It was also cute that amongst the impromptu pitches he gave me, he started showing me pictures of watched and displays on his iphone too… see more images on the next page!

Monocle LA

monocle1.jpg So last night i finally got to meet Tyler Brule!!! Pretty sure he has no clue who i am, but he was totally on my list of people i looked up to (as far as fun lives and awesome careers…) Unfortunately people are seldom as amazing as you build them up to be in your head, right? (Perhaps this is why i freak out about meeting readers!) I was slightly saddened, although not all that surprised, that Brule said LA was casual to a fault… (more juicy details coming up in the LAist interview Kemp did while there)… and can you believe it’s all run on only 35 people? Tyler and his super nice PR folks popped in from Tokyo and London, and many were popping off the next day already…

ANYHOW, the most exciting thing of all? The second international Monocle store has opened! And right in one of my childhood hangouts, the Brentwood Country Mart! In fact, i still hang out there, the food and shopping is so delicious and chill (mmm mrs beasleys, burritos, james perse, and that awesome apothecary). But i digress… adorably cute shop, set up like a little living room you can settle in to, read some Monocle, browse the website, and the best part? Finally we have a local shop to check out those gorgeous Porter bags, notebooks, candles and more! Personally i may need to go back and grab some of the adorable posters! They wouldn’t let me take pics inside the shop, but you can however see just about everything from outside the super cute space! Take a look at more pics on the next page!

p.s.
I was surprised how incredibly low key and what a mixed crowd this event was! It felt more like a picnic than a launch party…

NOTCOT in Straits Times Top 50 Websites

dl090.jpg So amongst some of the family reasons i needed to be in Singapore suddenly last week… NOTCOT was featured in the Straits Times! I thought it was only a tiny article somewhere and possibly only digital, but when i arrived friends and family had saved me a few copies of this big pull out section - Digital Life - from the March 25th 2009 Straits Times of the Top 50 Websites!

See some pics of the actual pull out section on the next page ~ and when i get more unpacked will do some proper scans! It is truly one of the strangest top 50 lists for websites i’ve seen… but still immensely flattered to have made the cut!

p.s.
For you kiasu ones, please note “The sites on the following pages are numbered, but the numerals are for neat visual order and not to signal any order of merit.”

Operation Window Seat: Changi to LAX

changi0.jpg I’m back to real life now ~ 18 hour direct flight was surprisingly less painful than expected… also the all business class flight with lay flat beds certainly didn’t hurt… 4-5 movies and like a 10 hour nap… and i am home! (You can take a peek at some of the pics on the LAX-Singapore flight here) Took off at 4:15pm landed in LA at 5:00…

It was a good trip, putting in some family time to pay my respects to my grandmother and help with family affairs… nice chance to step out of my NOTCOT life for a few days… but of course i couldn’t help myself and i have a little pile that just jumped out of my suitcase waiting to be photographed and shared! With the perfect timing on the flights this trip back the views were so gorgeous i couldn’t help taking a few snapshots and mini videos with the point and shoot… so check it out on the next page! Also some fun details of Changi airport… i love the backlit walls of hanging plants and the giant robotic flower fan!

(ok videos are taking forever on Vimeo ~ will add those when they are up!)

Singapore Garden Moss

moss0.jpg Singapore’s landscape is this crazy juxtaposition of incredibly lush green rain forest with a fascinatingly modern/urban shopaholics dream mixed throughout… for some reason, this latest trip i’ve been completely drawn in by the beautiful color palettes - staring upwards out of the car windows into the trees on every drive… and while taking a breather between things, i started noticing the tiny details like the incredible textures and colors of the MANY types of moss found in just one part of the yard… so here are some close up looks at some of my favorite mossy details (and my grandmother’s tiny orchids) on the next page!

Colgate Wisp

wisp0.jpg Another adventure in packaging based shopping… Colgate Wisps! Keep in mind i knew nothing about these when i wandered into CVS to pick up some last minute travel sized basics for this sudden Singapore trip, and they were intriguingly packaged and designed… tiny, silly, and not sure that i’d buy them for normal usage… but someone clearly spent quite a bit of time on the packaging/product details! So take a peek at some pics of them up close on the next page ~ and a look at the silly marketing angle they’ve taken as well (aimed at club kids?)…

And in all honesty ~ its a lot of plastic to basically get a tiny melt in your mouth bead of mouthwash into your mouth as you scrub with some harsh plasticiness…

p.s.
This week long Singapore trip came up last minute (booked the night before leaving!) ~ so things might be a little quiet this week as i put in some family time!

Gridiron Backgrounds

flow1.jpg Sometimes i get distracted by the randomest details ~ my friend, freshly back from Photoshop World, was telling me to check out Gridiron’s Flow ~ and there’s even a free iPod Touch to every 50th download of their trial… but as i was checking it out, i got terribly distracted by how awesome the backgrounds and the flash animation on their homepage were… cute tagline “Chaos, meet Order”… so before i even downloaded the trial, and fully explored the program itself (which is in fact quite intriguing) ~ i was deep digging in their CSS to find all their various background files ~ which are SO cool! So take a peek at those on the next page, as well as some screenshots of their site (in case we ever look back years from now and their site is different?).

Trader Joe’s Culinary Compendium

tj0.jpg Perhaps a NOTCOT first ~ scanning my junk mail? But flipping through this Trader Joe’s mailer was hilarious, you could just imagine how much fun the lucky designers were having as they put this together! The octopus on the cover is just priceless, and hilarity continues within as well! Take a peek at some of my favorite pages… on the next page!

2009 Survey and Logitech Squeezebox Boom

BOOM.jpg UPDATE!!! Congrats to our winner, Philip in Seattle!!!!

It’s been a while since i asked YOU what you’re up to, who you are, etc etc ~ and advertisers are curious to know more (as am i!). So 2009 NOTCOT Survey time! I know how not fun these can be, so i consider it a huge favor and really appreciate it if you can help out and take the survey here! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

ALSO! To make it more fun, i’ll pick one winner from the surveys to send one of my latest obsessions! The Logitech Squeezebox Boom! (Just make sure you fill in your email at the end of the survey if you want to be entered!) I will pick a winner on Monday, so get that survey in by Sunday night!

This also seemed like a fun chance to show you the Logitech Squeezebox Boom up close too! When i moved into the new NOTCOT HQ ~ it was far too quiet and too many rooms! So this Boom has been perfect! It is nice, simple, sleek and portable ~ i can use it room to room and outdoors even ~ just needs wall power (not sure why no battery option!) ~ and it can tap into my wifi or ethernet (or plug in ipod, etc) ~ play any of the music on my computer/network, internet radio (which apparently includes every local station these days too!), Last.FM, Pandora, Rhapsody, Sirius, and more! I was skeptical about the sound quality at first, but its been incredible for its size, and great for rooms/kitchen/etc. Bonus? It runs on the SqueezeCenter which is a breeze to setup, and it’s all open source so you can even program games and weather and other random features to be displayed… also works great as an alarm clock! … and it networks with all of the other Squeezebox networked players as well! [Retails at $263 at Amazon]

Take a look at more pics on the next page ~ i love the little design details like the rubberized wheel and the thumb indentation on the remote… and don’t forget to take the 2009 NOTCOT Survey!

The Send Help Project

help0.jpg It’s hard to ignore a big box filled with packing peanuts protecting a multi-layered bubble wrapped bottle… with a note curled up inside ever so meticulously. Not to mention the fact that it says SEND HELP largely across its label…

So, WHAT is it? Well for close ups of the awesome invitation, check out the next page… and for more information on this upcoming collaborative art show this weekend, see The Send Help Project! Hosted by CreativeLab it will be in Brooklyn on March 28th (this saturday! one night only!). Artists will be exploring the theme of “SEND HELP” through various forms and mediums.
