Goorin

goorin.jpg
“The Goorin Hat is the ultimate mark of individuality, style, and status. Since the first Goorin Hat was sold off a horse cart in Pittsburg, PN in 1895, Goorin Brothers has redefined the art of hat making.” That is how the story of their history begins, and its a fascinating read both literally and visually, and the hats are stunning (and apparently being worn by all sorts of celebs these days)… But why i’m posting them is for their BAGs i discovered today, stumbled upon these down at Animal House in Venice Beach today, and they are incredibly well made and full of character. The little design details from the clasps to the linings and most importantly the great fabrics they use - make it well worth the mere 40$ it cost. I was torn between the “Chewie” fuzzy bag and the “Bunny” pin striped fabric bags - both the perfect size/shape for a comfy pillow of a purse that can hold a LOT of stuff (think between messenger bag and tote sized purse) and still be a comfy around the town bag. Ended up getting the Chewie - might have to go back for the other.

Stamps!

trodat.jpg
WOW. Ok so i apparently haven’t been paying attention to the stamp industry and/or there is some new crazy design going on? Check out these products from Trodat - on top we have this portable self inking stamp that folds into a silver tube, ready for your pocket. Then theres the one where that is built into a pen! And then my favorite for those random messages you have the urge to stamp - since you can play typestter with it!!! Mini tweezers and different sets of fonts and all! I was just researching making a self inking stamp - and discovered this whole new world and got excited.

Beatles Bands

Wow, firstly how can one not like the beatles, and secondly those are some really fun vintage candy wrapper graphics. The work of Clizia Ornato is playfully delicious and she manages to turn these really cool vintage wrappers into cuffs! In addition to the candied ones, there are also some with postal stamps and kimono covers.

Cardboardistry Cont’d

ahern.jpg
Ok - posted about the works of Paul Ahern a few days ago… and while it was some great work, the story is what sometimes brings it to that next level, and reading about his life and checking out this video, “Watch This House” by The Natural History 2003, that kick started the whole Cardboardistry era will just make you want one more… or inspire you to go out and make something!

I was curious about his technique, and here’s what Paul has to share “I do a drawing or select a photo, project it onto a huge (usually about 5’x3’) piece of cardboard and slice along all the areas that need to contrast. I’m essentially creating a black and white image, so I pull away the surface paper (which takes forever, and comes off in a zillion little shreds) where I want the black to be, and leave behind the white. Then I go in and delicately scrape away the residual paper fibers until I have achieved the desired level of contrast. Each one takes about 7-10 hrs to complete.” - More to share on new pieces/styles/below.

Anonymous

Ok, well old habits are hard to break, and i’m sure you know NOTCOT has a soft spot for animals and weaponry in jewelry. SF based Anonymous Apparel has some great pieces - you can see my obvious favorites being the tiny owls (which you can buy in “couples” - black and silver and black and gold) - and the antique turtle has such a unique charm to it that just makes you smile. And the gun, well it was just fun.

Steel Puddles

interni2.jpgI get images stuck in my head the way people get songs stuck in their head, and this piece by Four Field Design Office is stuck. I can’t explain the appeal that brushed steel has for me… but something about these crazy brushed steel looking puddles that you can sit on is somewhat fascinating… a bit sci-fi - a little like giant mercury puddles - yet it reminds me of a kitchen (you know - stainless steel kitchens, those crazy german smell removing steel soaps? etc etc)… just a fun pic. Also quickie pic from Interni [i need a new scanner, i know. sorry]

Fun

interni-lamps.jpg
Playful busywork/magazine reading kind of day - came across these fun lamps in Interni, just took a quick snapshot to share. These are the works of Thelermont Upton, unfortunately my google skills can’t find you a link for this - so if you know/find one, leave a note. My only complaint is - shouldn’t the glove looking lamp have a more distinct thumb?

Cardboardistry

cardboard.jpg
Things are not as they seem. Honestly this one took me a few minutes of staring before i really got it too… Brooklyn boy Paul Ahern sent me over to check out his Cardboardistry. It seems that he carves away at cardboard with an x-acto knife, and the result is this inverted stencil look - as if you were making lithographs with acid? Cutting away to expose the corrugations to form images… Its a brilliant concept that you could almost compare to that old school copper scraping technique - only making a more interesting use of everyday materials. You really must see the larger images of them to get a real look at how sweet this work is!

Bolt City

boltcity.png
Kids, take note! One of the most gorgeous web comics ever, still uses a nib pen dipped in INK. Yes! INK POTS!~ I was just introduced to the world of Copper, the adventures of a boy and his dog - and their silly little bickerings and happily ever afters. But this tutorial/walk through of Kazu Kibuishi… from pencil sketches, to inking, to scanning, to coloring with wacom and photoshop. Also this is five star inspiration - if flipping through this doesn’t make you reach for pen and paper… well, you can only guess.

I too am only focusing on making it to the next mushroom right now.

Digitall

Samsung’s quarterly [?] DigitAll digital magazine is all about design this Spring 2006. A lot of products you’ve probably heard about [charger pot, wooden necklace usb key, etc], but also some interesting articles to take a quick glance at. And i added it over the links page, which is slowly growing to be a resource of great design sites to check in on now and again.

Gallery NOTCOT : Salter

salterbotmain.jpg
Gallery NOTCOT is proud to present our second showing - featuring the works of Michael Salter and his incredibly playful vector creatures, spaces, and basically the coolest things i’ve ever laid eyes on made of styrofoam. So click around the tags on the sides here, and take a look at the AMAZING styrofoam robot guys below!

In the artist’s own words “[my work] is an attempt to slow down the torrid flow of informationi and infinitely rethink meaning, narrative, perception and thought. There is an alternate, underlying dimension of obvoiusness that is rich with abstraction… ” [see why i like this his work? and way of thinking?]

UnAmerican

unamerican.jpg
Funny, i was just thinking about Unamerican today and then i get an email from them with their new updated stickers… For those who are unfamiliar - Unamerican is all about provoking thought with text and simple imagery in the form of minimal stickers. You create the context for these phrases. I’ve had “Fuck Work” on the vcr flap of my little 13” tv/vcr i’ve had since freshman year of college. “Question Technology” was on the inside when you’d open my old iBook… “Being Hip Is Not Enough” - with the explanation that “modern kids have learned to make video and art fast and cheap. Imagine this set of talents channelled into work for change.” Yes. Imagine what we could do? Other good new ones “Don’t eat your soul to fill your belly” - “Wal*Mart is communism” - “There’s still time to change the road you’re on”… [and yes, seldom will i send you to such a jarring site, but the content makes up for it and then some.]
