Bored?

boredshirt2.jpgRemeber the Bored Girl? She’s been the source of all inspiration from day one of NOTCOT, and i’m thinking of reprinting her in whatever sizes/colors people are interested in [granted i have a ton of things going on, but some manual labor - read “handmade with love?” - would be good for me]. So if anyone is interested in a reprint - let me know colors/sizes/etc and i will try to make it happen in the next few weeks - 20$ a shirt!

I’VE MOVED

hosting_secured.jpg
TIME TO MOVE!!! UPDATE - The moving is complete, the site reconfigured and migrated and all is working. So you should be noticing FAR faster page loads, and less annoyances. And well, i suppose that means more posting should occur since i am no longer poking away at the DNS and MT settings.

Diesel Turns 50

PAAAIACKDMEGBDDA.jpgDiesel - yes the Italian fashion line thats has some of the most incredible graphics and window displays, not to mention ads and flashy sites with insane themes - is turning 50. And to commemorate this half a century, there is a hefty hardcover complete with DVD i think i need to own. Purchase it here for 95$ (and help support notcot a little!) instead of the cover price of 150$! “Fifty is made up of five chapters that convey the Diesel lifestyle and philosophy in an unconventional way. The book’s first chapter features an insightful portrait of company visionary Renzo Rosso, followed by a second dedicated to the key moments in Diesel’s history, from its “jeans & workwear” beginnings to its current premium positioning. The third chapter presents the brand’s innovative communication and retail approach while the fourth focuses on the company’s long-lasting support of young creative talent worldwide. A concluding chapter presenting Diesel’s views of the future rounds out the book. Each section ends with a face-to-face interview between Rosso and a prestigious (or, in pure Diesel style, simply unconventional) personality, including the Dalai Lama, i-D magazine founder Terry Jones, Alexander McQueen and a few, well kept, secrets.”

Kingsley

kidsrock.jpg
On my kid’s theme… kids should rock too, forget covering them in fluffy happy shiny things. Sid Vicious on your shirt saying “Oi!” is pretty impressive, and definitely one of those shirts that your kid will grow up and see pics of herself in, and think, “wow, i knew what was up even then!” I’m loving all these clothes that appeal to the the indie punk generation having kids. Kingsley Aarons inspired by his 1 year old mastermind Zephyr Kinsely Aarons designed a line of kids wear to make him the future rockstar he is. Gone is the time when baby shower shopping had to be a bore, and picking between pastels and teddy bears. Rock on.

New Skool

kidhoodie.jpgThe perfect hoodie is hard to find, now imagine trying to find that perfect edgy hoodie for your little toddler? Well the New Skool line by Nate Designs has you covered - this adorable hoodie with the headphones is only the beginning… also some great lion graphic “feed me” tees and a classic red wagon filled with spray cans… even a new skool “skool bus” shirt. And yes while i know it is unusual to find a great kids line such as this, you can also get the hoodies in adult sizes, and some fun shirt graphics for us too.

Throughfare

throughfare.jpg
Exploring Williamsburg (possibly my new favorite place in NY), imagine stumbling across this incredible window… which at first looks like an insane window display, but upon further inspection, you realize it’s possibly the BEST use of gallery space i’ve seen in quite some time. This is Throughfare, and installation from March 2 - March 19, by Andrew Poneros, Leon Reed (Darius Jones), and Alex Holden at the Riviera. This incredible landscape, part signage - part man made nature (faux grass and park bench included), environment is even more than meets the eye as you get closer to each sign, which is filled with brilliant juxtapositions of urban life and the nature that learns to grow around/within it. In a combination of gorgeous graphical elements and physically manipulated signage (from curving metal to leaves cut out from signs), the impact is spectacular. OH! And i nearly forgot the murals, mixing soft greens and what appears to be woodprint wallpaper to further expand the little world you step in to.

Barcade

barcade.jpg
Last night in NY, ended up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn [artsy/funky/warehouse-y]… also why i got back late, was packing and doing some last minute design edits, and a bit more organizing on the top secret projects… and that is my excuse for the post lull, but i have a backed up list of things coming up this week! Anyhow, we start it off with the BARCADE. That’s right, a BAR thats an ARCADE… and not any arcade but an old school upright machine styled arcade with a great selection of beer, a red pool table, and my favorite touch, the chalk boards with the all time high scores on games like Tapper, Centipede, Dig Dug, Super Mario Bros and far more to bring out that kid in you again. Other reason why you need to check it out - their “from warehouse to barcde” transformation photos are mesmerizing.

Technicolor Mars

mars.png
I felt like i was dreaming. Dreaming in technicolor. Mars looks like Joseph’s Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Working on my project in NY has left me utterly drained today, and this is all i have brainpower to share. Mars is art… the way Google has painted it anyhow.

POP

cableyoyopop.jpg
Cable Yoyo sent us their new Cable Yoyo Pop, which will be available in April! I must admit this post is less a product review and more of a packaging design review. While i had seen the images of the product on the site and press releases, it is the box when it arrived that made me smile. Matte Black. Clean font. Sweet line drawings. Good colors. And preprinted stickers of various designs for the not so creatives to customize their POP!

As for how it works, basically that main piece has a high quality hardcore suction cup. You stick it to anything and wrap your headphones around it. More specifically, they provide you three options. The main piece labeled 1, has the suction and can clip your headphones and plug in the front. When attached to 2, you can clip it on to something. When attached to three, you can peel 3’s adhesive and stick it to just about anything. Or you could simply suction on to the back of your ipod, or window, etc. So Suction then wrap… My only complaint is it works best with simple headphones, esp ones that are symettrical (not one short side and one long piece for the second ear piece)…

Dynomighty

magnetoid.jpgSo magnets are one of those wonders of the world that can amuse to no end regardless of age - and great for boredom in meetings/classes/etc. Well i know this Dynomighty jewelry has been floating around the design websites for some time, but recently Elsewares lent me the Bandoleer Bracelet, and the packaging was sweet! Since no one had ever shown it to me, and it certainly would have been a big selling point for me, I took a shot of it to share with you. The fascinating part about this line, is that these could pretty much be magnets for your fridge, or one for your fridge while the rest are your bracelet, or it could be 5 rings, or you can mix and match sets. Its really a fascinating idea - they are all separate magnets to do with as you please. So check out the nice floating box of magnets. Gorgeous.

AARGvark

ableandbaker.jpgSo i discovered this web comic, Able and Baker, today and have read many of them while on hold making phone calls, and other such mindless tasks. They are great. The bipolar gerbil like creature is by far the best. Banter between him and Bunbun from Sluggy Freelance would be priceless. So the crazy world of Jim Burgess gives you insight to the lives and intricacies of being a lab animal (so other characters include the sheep, monkey, prof, + prof’s daughter). AND he has designed this AARGVARK shirt. When aardvarks go rogue, paint a skull and crossbones on their back, and get a peg leg… beware?

UAMOU - From another planet!

ayako_takagi.jpg

I like my cute to have a hint of creepy and Ayako Takagi achieves this balance flawlessly. This London-based artist is the creator of the comic Uamou From Another Planet, and other characters like this Katz & Beer figure. Uamou is apparently an alien who explores the galaxy and befriends a ghost. As if that wasn’t cute enough, check out the artist’s adorable website.

You can get Uamou #1 and the Katz & Beer figure from the Australian site, Via Alley. I’d love to get my hands on one or two.. or three of those Uamou pins!

Automoblox

autoblox.jpg
Wandering New York, found another toy car that needs to be added to the collection with the Playsam and perhaps the Plasma Car. It is ironic that while i need to be shopping for a real live car, i somehow end up with these gorgeous little abstracted pieces. So here we have Automoblox (doesn’t quite rolllll off the tongue now does it?) But these are “educational” and good for your child’s development. Frankly, i love the sketches of the design in the making on the website, and how the people who ride in the car remind me of super versions of those from the game of Life. There is a 17 number VIN on the bottom of the cars. The cars parts can be mixed and matched (from SUV, Minivan, Truck, Sedan, etc.) And it has even been in Car and Driver, Road & Track, and Business Week.

Spray Graphic - “thought provoking style”. And that is quite true. Here are the few i’m tempted to buy when i wake up in the morning - Mind Grenade - Nucleus - Urban Cowboy … also not shown here you should go check out Carnivore and Think Green.
