PUPPY!

17653.7179C6F5.jpgNew toy from Eero Aarnio the designer of the original Ball Chair/Bubble ChairPony! And many other classics. Many more pictures of his old works i just rediscovered after the jump. This new one is quite fun though, comes in a few different sizes, and could be a unique playful footrest!

A lil’ help?

notcotwants.jpgAlmost everyday, i share my random inspiration…sorry, i got cold feet on this one, didn’t think anyone really noticed it… but apparently many did notice the “disappearance”… thanks for the feedback! This has become a repository of the things that make me go “hmmmmmmm” or “oooooooo” or “ohhhh”. But i’ve been thinking lately, maybe it could be more? And since i figure you are the one reading it regularly, maybe you should get some say in what you like, don’t like, want more of?

The idea so far has been to keep it all text based, let the images pop off and be all you really need to look at. If you care because the image draws you in, fine, then read it. Otherwise text is almost just background that provides information when you want it. This also started as an experiment in CSS more than a blog… but where should it go now? How do you feel about Advertising?

Yokohama Recycling…

yokohama.pngOnly a mom could help you realize that what you’re doing is NOTHING to complain about… Mom sent me this link on the new Yokohama recycling initiative… it is truly hardcore in every sense. There are well over 10 categories of waste to be categorized and “put out in semi-transparent bags so that the contents can be quickly and easily verified by the collectors”, and so many specific exceptions to each category [such as in batteries you can not dispose of rechargeables, for that you must visit a recycling support store]… There is also keeping track of how many days a week/month each category is collected, and then a very detailed chart of the various types of Over-sized Garbage Collection and their rates… Electric Organ disposal will cost you 1,500! A computer hard drive a mere 200… weaving loom? 500! Bathroom sink, 1000… Buddhist altar, also 1000. And the section on handling Animal Carcasses… cost for pick up, cost for cremation… You get the point. Intense. The graphic layout of this document is quite interesting as well… see it here.

p.s. Got to love the little garbage bag girl that says “Everyone must do their part”… they even managed to make a bag of garbage look adorable.

Bionic Dolphin

bionic-dolphin.jpgVASH (Variable Attitude Submersible Hydrofoil) aka Bionic Dolphin… excerpts from Gizmag

It will soon be sold in watersports stores, enabling adventurers worldwide to experience underwater flight! The Bionic Dolphin was conceived in 1974 by Thomas A. Rowe (Doc to you), though prototype development did not begin until 1988 and the first prototype, “Noland Won” did not make its first historic “flight” until September 7, 1992 at Oak Bottom Marina on Whiskeytown Lake in Northern California. It was, according to Discover Magazine, “the aqueous parallel to the Wright Brothers’ achievement: underwater flight.”

From Aerospace engineering to submersible dolphin contraption… Rowe has come a long way. This arcticle is worth a read, even if only to see more incredible images.

PENGUINS!

marchofthepenguins_poster.jpgGuest post… Leave it to RUGenius to find the one dorky thing in trendy “In Style” magazine. On June 24th, Warner Brothers Independent is releasing “March of the Penguins”. As we all know, penguins are freakishly and obligately monogamous, mating for life. So now you can witness Antarctica in its full and wintry glory and understand why emperor penguins are so intense. Best part, it’s “as told by Morgan Freeman”…hahahaha. You know you want to see it.

Other cool penguin facts…penguins “fly” underwater. They move in masses, constantly trying to stay out of the wind and get inside the huddle. You can actually track large groups of penguins using satellites as they drift miles and miles, just because every individual wants to escape the windchill.

And, while we’re on the promotion of cheesy animal movies. Go see MADAGASCAR. Comes out this weekend. It’s got lemurs, so it MUST be cool. [notcot note: it was amusing, silly, beware of being engulfed by children under 5 at a matinee]

Tree House!

Fabaxo1.jpgFabtime1a.jpgMy friend claims this is more a House-tree than a Tree-house. But no matter what you call it, its pretty amazing… from the MIT Human Ecology Design Team in 2003, they too have been nominated for this years Index Awards 2005. I will build one someday, and i guess it will be ready many years later. Build one for the grandkids!

Design to Improve Life

hipporoller.jpgWhile i believe all design should improve life, INDEX: awards those who truly do. While all of the projects nominated are inspiring and innovative [and i love that they overlook the age of the project], the one to the right especially caught my eye. The Hippo Roller was designed to assist those impoverished towns and people who must walk long distances to a water source and carry it back (often in buckets on their heads). The Hippo Roller is a low cost plastic drum that can be rolled back and forth carrying far more water in one trip.

Every now and then, and example of innovative intelligent design like this reminds me of how much potential there is for designers to really make a difference.

Quattro

razors.jpgNice solution…[center] For the girls, or maybe just to friends… a quickie. I used to love the guys Mach3 razor… then i forgot mine when i was travelling and picked up a Venus Divine (customized for women, etc), and while it was nice, a bit large/plasticy for me. So the free Schick Quattro just came a few days ago, and i just had to share its the perfect hybrid between those two by Gillette. It has the slim/weighted body of the Mach3, nice female friendly design, 4 razors, and has a cap for the razor (instead of having to have it loose, or on a big stand/case)… and it really has left me incredibly smooth.

Patent Room

toygunforbicycle.gifPatent Room: The Art of Industrial Design It is not an easy feat to find unique and inspiring image resources and those at CPH127 have done just that. While rereading many of their posts, giving my brain that jump start of design and the future of its role in innovating, i came across this site filled with wonders of early 20th century industrial design from original US Patent applications… and i stare in wonder at what could have been, and why these fascinating objects aren’t around now. Check out this Bicycle Handlebar Gun…

Burberry Dots

buberry.jpg“Burberry eyes the dots in Japan” is the article title from Creativity Magazine… amazingly enough, and after two years of development, Tokyo agency Tugboat has created the “serious change” Burberry desired… “The challenge in developing the new pattern was how to maintain the tradition and the quality of the Burberry check yet make it into a new iconic image of the brand.” Gutsy. [Is this in the style of LV going Murakami?]

Hydrolab

hydrolab.jpgI’m picky, but when i fall for graphics, i fall fast. This is a quick scan of a shirt i found at Hydrolab… i was impressed with the style of graphics and shirts they printed on for their own label. Its a very street/LA style boutique mixed with a more San Diego chilled beachy (with your usual haviannas and surf boards at the back)… a few good finds, worth a look-see if you’re around here. HydroLab, 1140 Abbott Kinney, Venice, CA 90291, +1.310.450.7221 I love the style of this girl in the image, especially the way the waves are drawn to almost evoke an acquatic “dragon and the princess” serene yet potentially dangerous visual…
