Muji’s Product fitness 80 at the Design Museum

mujimain.jpg The latest from our resident zoologist and London-based editor, Justine Aw, who super awesomely went to check out this Muji event on her birthday! (Happy Birthday, Justine!)

Product Fitness 80 asks the questions “What would happen if we used 20% less materials and energy to make products?”. The clever exhibition pushes Muji craftsmen to develop products that use fewer materials and processing. You can catch the exhibition at London’s Design Museum from tomorrow, the 9th of March until next Sunday, March 18th. In the meantime, see more more photos on the next page!

Lamborghini Aventador J

lamborghini.jpg I was lusting after the Lamborghini Aventador J one of a kind that just launched in Geneva… which naturally lead me to the Lamborghini site… where i encountered the image above. And i literally LOLed. So awesome. That gate. Wow. And apparently Lamborghini is really in to twitter and hashtags?

Anyhow, back to the other topic at hand… the new Lamborghini Aventador J concept is gorgeous! Often the Lamborghini designs are so faceted and aggressively angular, i love the way this model gets a bit softer and sleeker with its curves mixed in… also the wheels are gorgeous (“The wheels, of course, were also developed specifically for this car, with 20-inch rims at the front and 21-inch at the rear. The five-spoke aluminum wheels have a central lock system and an additional carbon fiber insert that functions like a small fan for optimum brake ventilation.”)… and it is the first automotive use of “Carbonskin” (which “is made of woven carbon fibers soaked with a very special epoxy resin that stabilizes the fiber structure and keeps the material soft.”)… oh, and the exhaust… and the periscopic rearview mirror that floats in the center! And as for what’s inside this stunning design, the basis is the Aventador LP 700-4 new twelve-cylinder model. Lots of pics on the next page of course!

p.s. You can buy this. It’s a one of a kind… see how they end the press release: “A unique work of art licensed for the road However, at the end of the Geneva Motor Show, this sight will be the preserve of just one - the future owner of the Lamborghini Aventador J. There is only one of them, no prototypes and no others for the Lamborghini Museum. The buyer can look forward to a truly unique, street-legal work of art. He will possess the most extreme expression of Lamborghini DNA in existence and a real masterpiece of high technology.”

Chambre De Sucre

sugar0a.jpg Sugar! Sugar! SUGAR! I’ve been on a bit of a sugar high since this mysterious packet of mini packets of sugar samples arrived from Chambre De Sucre and i tore them all open to shoot/taste it for this post. SO much sugar. And it’s all so delicately pretty. Oh, and we also brewed quite a few cups of espresso to try them with. We’ve been buzzing over here.

These sugars from Chambre De Sucre are not just gourmet sugars… “The sugars are handcrafted by one of the oldest family-owned businesses in Japan with the highest quality sugar possible. They are over 270 years old and have provided the Royal Family in Japan with their sugar since the time of the Shogun. Japanese artisans still use traditional methods to create this luxurious sugar for your cup of tea and coffee.” Their about page tells you a heart-warming story of Lisa’s past and what these sugars mean to her through her childhood experiences in Japan. They are the first to import these sugars to the US! The assortment of sugar options are mind blowing as you browse their site, and the packaging looks beautiful for gifting as well… on the next page you can see close ups of the many little samples sent over as we tried our way through them!

A fun twist on classic toy soldiers these little plastic guys are made in china but come from super local San Clemente, CA! Peanut Butter & Jelly… Haven Gastropub

0.jpg This post is coming to you from MiO. Change your water. Change your day. What do you want to change?

Our Tasteologie editor, Jackson, found a Peanut Butter & Jelly that is unlike any other… and most definitely not what you’d picture at first… here’s what he discovered!

We have seen countless variations on peanut butter and jelly, but it has never looked like this. This playful and sophisticated turn on an old favorite was concocted by pastry Chef Santanna Salas in the new Pasadena location of Haven Gastropub. Originally knowing only that she wanted to do something with peanuts, she transformed the childhood standard into a modern dessert. Its flavors are instantly recognizable but the textures and plating are all cleverly interpreted. I got to chat a bit with the chef and go back into the kitchen to see how they make peanut butter and jelly Haven style.

Inside Barnacle Bros.

mainbarnacle.jpg The latest from our NOTlabs head maker/fabricator/hacker, Shawn Sims, as he adventures through LA visiting some amazing fabrication shops/people!

Barnacle Bros. is an East LA sculpture and custom fabrication shop that has been serving the arts and entertainment industries since 1997. “Barnacle Bros is an artist studio founded in 1997 by a friendly group of artists, craftspeople, performers, and local personalities. The folks at Barnacle Bros. are well versed in all media and processes. We specialize in wood, metal, fiberglass, composites, foam, resin, bronze, aluminum, stainless steel, stone, sculpting, casting, mold-making, models, miniatures, furniture, architectural elements, prototypes, and, of course, puppets.” Smilee and Karl specialize in the crazy, weird, and hard to build, and gave me a wondrous tour through their shop. Stepping into their space you will find yourself surrounded by remnants of Hollywood sets, clowns, knives in rocks, and 20 foot tall faces. It’s nothing short of awesome to wander through this workshop and get to see how it’s all made. The company gets its name from one of it’s first jobs where they molded and casted bronze barnacles form a pier on Venice Beach, and has since pulled off many more crazy projects for artists and festivals all over the world. Take a peek at more pics on the next page!
