Eiko

eggy.jpg
Eiko designed by Schaffer, produced by German Authentics is a great solution to soft boiled egg consumption. After many “breakfast included” european hotel experiences, i’ve come to see how pretty but not so functional little egg cups are, or i have yet to master the art of tapping away my shell with a little spoon. (i tend to pick it up, tap tap tap, and then put it back to the cup to eat it) With this design you can hang it on the side of the pot while boiling, simple lift it out, rinse in cold water, have a handle to hold while cracking the shell, and enjoy! [Authentics also made that great line of flatware and glasses by Tord Boontje]

Go-Loo

goloo.jpg
The Go-Loo by Lajja Design definitely deserves to be on that list of ideal gifts for baby showers. I often stare in wonder at how those new moms manage to carry/manuver not only their child but also that monstrosity of a baby bag which holds everything including the kitchen sink. I suppose the closest i can get to relating, is my ever growing laptop/cable/overnight bag… and i know anything to minimize the weight is appreciated. This is an extremely light (foamy feeling) changing pad, designed to be sturdy and padded enough, yet light and takes up a tiny amout of space, also comes in great colors.

Stingray

stingray.jpg
Spark design by Thomas Pedersen was another Danish group showing at the Copenhagen Fair, and they had this fun Stingray chair. Also check out some of their other lamps, more brilliant examples of flatpacking lamps that you pop and zip together.

Minimal Canopy

canopywissmann.jpg
This sweet canopy bed caught my eye at the Copenhagen Fair - could only find a close up of the model with the nice slanted headboard and side table, so imagine that with the full bed image. It was a nice take on the overly ornate traditional canopies or asian styled ones. From Wissmann.

Covers by FWIS

covers.pngSo i’m working on Hello-Friend to write for NOTCOT again [his life got busy for a while] - Here’s his first of many to come … COVERS is dedicated to the appreciation of book cover design. From the folks at FWIS (a design studio that primarily creates book covers ), this is a comprehensive look at trends in an often overlooked medium that even Steven Heller would put his name on. Furthermore, this site boasts perceptive, well-informed visitors who provide a running dialogue on the design and its origins.

Stockholm Rug

stockholmrug.jpg
How fun is this rug produced by Swedish group Launch Design Partner - I wish i had it in the hotel room when i got back so exhausted from walking all over the city, and was trying to figure out where i had been! “Malin Palm, one half of former design duo Design Dessert, works and lives in Stockholm. The goal of all her projects is to encourage and stimulate further thoughts and experiences.”

Remote Hanger

nylen.jpg
Also found this one via Galore, its Multishelf by Swedish firm Nylen Media, and its exactly what it sounds like. A shelf for many things - but ideal for all your tech gadgets (mobile phones, pdas, mps, remote controls, etc) - and maybe it could be adapted to be a sweet charging dock (slap a powerstrip underneath it perhaps?) I was drawn to the simplicity of the design, and the potential it has - available in black and white.

Woodpecker

dieselwoodpecker.jpgWOODEN GLASSES! from Diesel, but i can’t find them on their website (if you have info, comment it up and spread the word) - I’m completely exhausted and swamped, but i think the whilrwind travelling/meetings have been wearing on me - you’ll see much of the many little projects launching soon - but in my full imersion designing/exploring mode right now. Check out Galore, a free Scandinavian magazine that blew my mind. Great glossy, fun pics, and gorgeous content. So this is a quick snap of the glasses i found in there. Again, wooden glasses, what a cool looking idea, it matches the sleek woody scandinavian furniture styling i was falling in love with all over again this trip.

Miss Van Hedgehog

fornarvan.jpg
Fornarina and Miss Van team up often (there are even fashion pieces featuring her art now), and i remember loving her birds on the walls of the Milan store in 2004. This time i’m loving her hedgehogs (and i’ve recently been doing a lot of research on hedgehogs for a logo project, so it was somewhat exciting to see her take on the creatures) - So this is crop of a quick pic of the Stockholm Fornarina store you can see below, as well as super hedgehog close up!

STADSMUSEUM

stad.jpg
The STADSMUSEUM in Stockholm has this great little plaza, with these 4 sculptures that double as children’s play things. In keeping with featuring playful art - just had to share this image… what can one say about that half of a powerpuff girl? And that Playsam-esque piece that little kids kept using as a slide? And that giant guy with the sand, not to mention the sandbox the toddlers couldn’t get enough of? This was the Stockholm City Museum, and they also currently have an interesting Design: Stockholm exhibit on, covering the history of Stockholm’s design. [more perspectives below.]

GRANIT

granit.jpg
Possibly one of my new favorite stores internationally. I’ve been addicted to Muji from the first time i laid eyes upon one, as well as Ordning&Reda, and to join that genre - i am now adding GRANIT - basically its a Swedish Muji. With incredibly brandless simplicity they provide you with everything from notebooks and boxes to bags (and some great simple luggage tags i bought) and travel accessories, to flatware in both japanese and wooden looks, to even bath accessories… and much much more. It’s ok if you don’t read Swedish you can still browse through the categories pretty easily or check out the pdf catalog. Although it seems they are only in Sweden currently, hopefully they will find their way out to the rest of the world, and definitely put it on your list of “to see’s” when you visit.

Form & Function

formandfunction.jpg
Ooooh Form & Function of Stocksund, Sweden bring us a great collection of designer vinyl stickers to enhance wallpaper/walls/cabinets/notebooks/ anything really! Think Blik but with even cooler euro designers. From the left we have Antonie+Manuel, Tado, my all time favorite: Genevieve Gauckler, and of course the doggies Cap & Pep from Kuntzel+Deygas (that you always see on Colette)! There are a slew of other artists as well, and the designs and colors mixed and matched would provide some very interesting and artistic possibilities for any space large or small.

NB: i found these in my crazy weekend in Stockholm - so there will be more Swedish design.

Al’s Attire SF

AlsAttireInterior1.jpg
With the summer wedding season arriving for me, I decided it was about time to shed that off the shelf suit look, and see what I could find in terms of unique hand made suits. After a few weeks of looking and asking around, I got tipped off to Al’s Attire in North Beach, San Francisco. Just browsing the shop it was clear that Al had a unique style and flair that really showed his passion for his work and a certain whimsy that I loved. From the hand sewn multi-colored button holes and hidden color-burst under the collar, to the bright silk linings his style gives a suit that fun when you want it feel, all hand cut/sewn and customized to your needs for a whole lot cheaper than you’d think. Read on for pics of his work.
