Christofle + ECAL

christofle.jpg
When a traditional silverware company, Christofle ( dates back to 1830! official silversmith to King Louis Phillipe and supplier to Napolean III) - decides to team up with Lausanne’s ECAL - to let students experiment with the medium, you know it will be breathtaking. It’s awfully late, but i just read this in Wallpaper and had to share it. We’ve all touched silver, you know you can leave fingerprints on it… so i love that they built that into the design of the business card holder and and USB Thumb Drive… also in the collection are condom holders, push pins, sewing kits and stencils. Silver is in again, casting the everyday in gold and silver is everywhere (from toys and cocktail swords to AA medallions)… full article scan below.

In Orbit

orbit.jpg
Couldn’t resist posting another, here is the Dedon Orbit. For when the weather changes on you, and you want that cozy cabana-esque feel, with a more circular feel - how can one resist curling up in there with someone and just watching the stars? or the waves crashing? (ok ok, or simply as your own hideout in the living room, or on the patio). These curves and lines are much like what i tend to doodle when my subconscious takes over, so it’s no real surprise i am so attracted to these pieces.

Leaf Lounging

leaf.jpg
I am an ocean kind of girl, don’t even need to be IN it so much as NEAR it at all times. It keeps me calm. And i love a good lounger, and as a definite hammock addict, this Leaf appeals to my organic simple design side as well. This woven beach little island of heaven is hand woven from weatherproof Hularo synthetic fibres and comes in seagrass and java, with optional cushions for added comfort… by Dedon.

Harvest your boards

harvest-re.jpg
We’ve seen a lot of products come through recycling everything from fire hoses to toothbrushes and spoons… and purses out of old skateboards even. Well here’s a take on recycling skateboards that comes from Japan - and converts them into wearable pieces - everything from rings+bangles to blinged out necklaces and art. Harvest

SF in Ruins?

San_Francisco_in_ruin.jpg
Jermacide sent me a link to this incredible picture (click the link to see full sized, its 7000px wide i think)… San Francisco in Ruins… You really need to look at it in full view and scroll around. Wow.

Roddick vs. Pong

amexpong.jpg

Pong: it’s just about the most fun you could cram into 8 bits. Whenever I see something pong-related, it brings back memories of hanging out at my friends’ place and totally getting into the game with their old school console (I had a one-handed technique!). So when I saw the new Amex ad with Andy Roddick vs. Pong I was smiling from ear to ear. It’s such a silly and simple ad (check it out on YouTube). The accompanying online game is cute (www.stoppong.com), but I prefer the good ol’ black & white version.

Boontje Tatts

boontjetat.jpg
I don’t do pink. I don’t do temporary tattoos. But i do love all things Tord Boontje. And can’t go wrong with a gorgeous vector dragon and fairytale-esque rose design. And instead of tip-toe-ing around the gratuitous boob shot, thats a pretty sweet looking tattoo placement with a low cut shirt, and definitely not something i would probably have the guts to do as a real tattoo. So thank Neko for this great temporary tattoo she posted over to .org tonight. (Doesn’t she find the best stuff?) … oh, and i nearly forgot, it is called the Cut Here Tattoo, since you can cut and use whatever parts in whatever order your heart desires.

Versailles + Lebovitz

versaillesleb.jpg
Versailles has always fascinated me, since that European History class freshman year of high school. And when i finally saw it in the flesh a few years later it was breathtaking, even when tourist filled. So maybe that is why i’m curious and awaiting Marie Antoinette to come out… but better yet - the Vogue photo shoot that Annie Leibovitz did on location with Kirsten Dunst is beautiful and surreal ~ and i needed to post this video of the behind the photo shoot over from Style.com. This Vogue shoot was the first authorized by the Chateau de Versailles in 25 years… and the outrageous gowns designed for the shoot are definitely worth taking a look at. Full article here, which reads more like a romance novel gone wrong than a historical account of the life of Marie Antoinette.

Portable Lawn

GRASSMAT.jpg
Everyone needs a little personal space, and sometimes you need that in the form of a grassy rectangle… or astroturf blanket… or an astroturf blanket that folds up and hide around your messenger bag? There’s something about this design by Wiesengluck that makes me laugh a little, then think “Wow thats brilliant, i could have used that at the beach today”. How’s it stay on? “The bag’s special feature: by means of zippers on all four sides of the bag you can connect your own blanket in the meadow the luck lies with the blanket of your neighbor.” via DesignSpotter

Stella + Adidas

stellaadidas.jpg
In our world of mashups - while it seems intuitive to say good thing + good thing = better thing, we all know that isn’t how the real world works, and it isn’t even THAT easy. But mashups are in right now, be it digital mashing between *anything and google maps, or the high end fashion designers with things like H&M and Target. One that i have been surprisingly taken by is Stella McCartney and Adidas’ combo - the website has some (while very flashy) gorgeous navigation and a very mysterious/ice queen/fairytale feel to it (something kind of little red riding hood, only in sleek gorgeous fitness wear, in the snow in the woods with wolves and such) about the collection. And this tennis dress caught my eye, because its great how she managed to transform that simple, layered luxurious feel to active wear.

Also - I am loving her logo being the little dots (reminds me of some old receipt fonts) and on the Stella McCartney homepage, they get eaten by MISS PACMAN! (if you don’t believe me, image after the jump)

“Origami meets street art.”

blrmain.jpg
I am a big fan of paper, the more i work digitally, the more i need to flip through a newspaper. There’s something about that tactile sensation of playing with a piece of paper, doodling in a notebook, inventing new origami… so you can only imagine how much i love this series by Shin Tanaka. More pictures of the event below, as covered by RUGenius, who wandered the depths of Berlin, in the name of NOTCOT, last night - stumbling upon everything from an opera on a pirate ship to the red light district’s murals to blue mohawk bartenders followed by camera crews for a reality tv show - and survived.

“Origami meets street art. Less Rain presents Shin Tanaka’s collection of paper Origami. Designed by himself and other Japanese and European graffiti artists and illustrators, he created new facets of these iconic objects. The special clue: Everybody can create an own version of the paper toys T-Boy, Gritty or Spike. The artist puts the paper toy templates on his website so that everyone can download, customise, build and display an own individual character.” —- more from Less Rain’s Blog.
