Reyka Vodka

reyka.jpg
Reyka Vodka ~ from iceland ~ their ads on youtube have had me in stitches all morning (watch them all below). Her voice and outfit are ADORABLE… in a hilariously cute kind of way… and the black and white sketchy animated world she exists in is just brilliant. And her poignant arguments make me giggle too much this morning. So, while i can’t say anything about how good the vodka is, the ads certainly make me want to try some… gorgeous bottle as well. Check out their website here, its got some pretty woodblock style graphics.

The Museum Plagiarius

plagarius.jpg I’ve always been amused by knock offs, especially the ones that change the name of the brand slightly. The founders of The Museum Plagiarius in Germany, however, don’t share my view. The museum displays about 300 products along with their rip-off counterparts in the hopes of bringing to the public’s attention how harmful this practice is for small designers. From BusinessWeek.com:

For 30 years, the museum’s co-founder, Rido Busse, has given the annual Plagiarius award to a handful of unscrupulous product rip-offs. Busse, a design professor, created the award in 1977 when he discovered that a Japanese company had copied a set of scales he had made for the German interior design company Soehnle Waagen. He decided to publicly shame the Japanese outfit by symbolically awarding them a prize—a black garden gnome with a golden nose—which he handed out at the Hanover Fair in the presence of the only journalist who decided to turn up. (Naturally, the counterfeiter didn’t show up to accept the award; it’s safe to say that was one bizarre ceremony.)

Aktion Plagiarius, the non-profit group that runs the museum, also offers legal advice and workshops to designers to help fight counterfeiters. Definitely check out the slideshow on businessweek.com. The knock off of Alfi called “Albi” cracks me up.

Svan Scooter

scooter_02.jpg
Svan Scooter ~ the perfect mix between the scandinavian sleek bent birch and playful scooter… it took everything in us not to jump on that and roll around barkar hangar. The one odd (or perhaps brilliant?) detail, was the use of what looked like office furniture casters for the wheels… now if only they’d make a larger one that could be used as a desk chair/studio transportation.

Arrange

testtubeshelf.jpg
Also from the brilliant folks at Every Space Design ~ and continuing on the CA Boom trend of living art/furniture… here is Arrange ~ a cute little bamboo shelf, with a grid of test tubes for you to arrange flowers, etc in accordingly… as the shelf to put your keys in, i know i’d probably have a pen and pencil taking up a tube or two in no time! Also fun was their booth itself, which went for the ultimate in simplicity using sharpies on butcher paper to label each piece (more images below).

Not Edible #21

notedible.jpg
Possibly my favorite piece i stumbled upon at CA Boom ~ Every Space Design’s solution to keep pigeons off window sills, etc… and no its NOT EDIBLE… it just *looks* like frosting. Another picture close up below of #21… and its only 10$ for each piece!

Carolyn Mendoza

cmendozamain.jpg
CA Boom 4 started today ~ and i must admit, a bit small, and quite an odd assortment of goods… standouts were the new section dedicated to toddler/baby goods and some incredible living art (i feel a new obsession with aerial plants coming on).

Fell in love with the work of Venice based Carolyn Mendoza ~ particularly her mixed patina techniques/metalwork/aerial plant pieces… absolutely stunning, mesmerizing, and easy to take care of! (they just need to be misted regularly)… see some pics of her booth below, as well as a unique corner sink unit she created in collaboration with Advanced Concrete Enhancement. Thing to watch out for? She tipped us off that she’s working on a large movable wall (yes, picture a large scale of one of these incredible living artworks in your loft or patio!)… should be ready in a month or so, can’t wait to see them!

Bigfoot does Culver City

bigfootmain.jpg
Bigfoot - Survival in the Modern World Show is currently running at the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City ~ and apparently he’s transformed the space into a forest, faux trees and all according to the great pics over at Vinyl Pulse. Also fascinating was the interface over at the Corey Helford Gallery that lets you browse all pieces on display.

But most intriguing of all to me tonight, are these pieces in which the bigfoots emerge from the natural woodgrain of their medium. I’m a huge fan of the traditional styled Bigfoot pieces, but loving these. More of these woodgrain based pieces below.

Sterling Silver Condiments…

theofennel.jpg
I’ve still yet to come to a conclusion on whether casting something in silver makes it really valuable, but i do still love what bittersweets has been doing with cocktail swords and vampire teeth (my unofficial jeweler of choice). However, there is something so playful, yet purchasable about Theo Fennell’s silver for condiments… from Heinz sleeves and caps, to Marmite caps… even a redbull sleeve! And my personal fave the Haagen Daz sleeve! (as well as others, as can been see in the pics and the site).

Flow PS3

flowmain.jpg
I’m sure you’ve heard about flOw. It’s been hard to miss… as that $7.99 download game on the PS3, i thought the trailer (see below) looked impressive, and the concept incredible, but in all honesty, it alone made purchasing the PS3 and HDMI cable totally worth it. It is the most mesmerizingly beautiful game i’ve ever played. There is something visually inspiring about the simplicity and fluidity of the game play… particularly using the ps3 controller over the flash version. Playing it on a 42” in HD and surround sound is stunning, and you really can lose yourself in the space for hours… it would make the ultimate interactive projection wall in the future studio.

More on the history below… but here’s the short version ~ it has come a long way from the USC MFA project it started as…

Folding@Home PS3

fahmain.jpg
Over hyped, then under hyped, then over hyped… following the saga of the PS3 the last year has been a rollercoaster. BUT this grey drizzly weekend, gave in and got one for fun… second to flow (more gushing to come on that later) ~ Folding@Home from stanford is one of the sweetest reasons to love a ps3. This is a project “people from through out the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world” in order to help in the study of of protein folding and protein folding disease. But why is it even better with the PS3? “This advance utilizes the new Cell processor in Sony’s PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) to achieve performance previously only possible on supercomputers. With this new technology (as well as new advances with GPUs), we will likely be able to attain performance on the 25 gigaflop scale per computer. With about 40,000 such machines, we would be able to achieve performance on the petaflop scale.”

What has WOW-ed me even more than the project itself are the gorgeous visualizations of the world (which you can spin and zoom, resembling the world at night nasa image meets the wii weather channel) and molecules in various 3d views.

Regardless of whether you are running it on a computer or your ps3, feel free to join our Folding@Home team (NOTCOT, team number 59465 - enter this when registering) ~ pics, youtubes, and more below…

AesopNikemain.jpg
Giveaway! Sponsored by Cornerstone Promotions: Win a 4 gig Nano, a pair of Nike+ shoes, and the iPod sport kit.

(see below for the sweet cover art, and clips to listen)… anyhow, this seemed like a good enough reason to help get us all out and about and away from our screens more.
