Material Furniture

materialfurniture.jpg
Material Furniture’s Knock Down/Drag Out Collection made my Thanksgiving. I have apparently been subconsciously desk shopping… something large and practical, yet aesthetically unique/modern and eco friendly. I also realized while rearranging, i love Ikea furniture (particularly building it) because there is something so therapeutic and calming/satisfying to build it yourself (and FAR faster than designing and building when you need a quick fix)… I’m also nomadic by nature, and love pieces that i can break down and move in my large car on a whim… So Material Furniture managed to hit all of my criteria, and i think i might need their Autopilot Workstation. Now if only i can track one down in person to try out. It comes in dark walnut and maple, with various laminate surface colors that fit flush with the desktop

like & retrievr

likeretr.jpg
I spend a lot of time obsessing and researching methods of discovery, search, and browsing lately… and two new sites have been getting a lot of coverage the last few weeks: Like.com which allows you to shop by searching shape, color, price, which can be selected by cropping a section of an image, and Retriever which will search images in flickr’s interesting pool based on a doodle/sketch or upload an existing image. Both introduce new ways to find similar objects, and its exciting to see these working fairly well for certain situations… watch closely to see how these scale in the upcoming months, and whether it could completely change the way we look for and catalog things. It’s only a matter of time before we’re all visual, right?

Gifts for Your Indie Ninja

So, this holiday season it seems like the internet is ready to shove gift guides down your throat… and they aren’t always all that fun… (trust me, as an avid shopper, and thisnext gift guide section designer, i did FAR too much gift guide perusing this week)… SO in my 5am Thanksgiving morning state, it decided it was time to try my hand at some more ridiculously playful shopping guides… So here is my Indie Ninja Gift Guide. Why? Because indie ninja’s are people too- and not the easiest people to shop for at that- and black will always be the new black- especially shiny glossy black. people, just look at history. Why should you buy your indie ninja a present? the real question is why WOULDN’T you want to make your indie ninja happy? Pissy ninja’s are bad news. See the full Gifts For Your Indie Ninja.

Ah how the time flies, but posting here really makes it so fun. Happy Thursday ~ Happy Thanksgiving… and for those americans out there, try not to over indulge. This week RUGenius rounds it all up for us.

i know i should be feeling nostalgic for the olden days with thanksgiving and all, but i confess, i’m ditching the turkey for a night out on the town. london calling…and in celebration of the city, this week’s picks are fun, modern and about my love for the metropole: 2182: a fresh take on the tattoo, 2203: t-rex necklace, 2197: shock jacket, 2204: subway map, 2230: opus

Blackjack

blackjackad.jpg
I can’t stop watching this Blackjack Cingular ad… its so so gorgeous. Sure those original iPod ads were amazing too, but they made you lust for the lifestyle… not directly for the product. This ad shows off the design to such a beat, you can’t help craving the Blackjack for a few moments, even if you don’t know what it is. By Shilo, via ComputerLove

p.s. For anyone who isn’t a SciFi Eureka Fan ~ Shilo also did their incredible intro… now if only we could figure out who did the Weeds intro!

Vespabots

vespabot.jpg
As much as i love Questionable Content, its not everyday i can find a good excuse to feature them on NOTCOT. BUT beyond the snarky baristas, on going emo melodrama, and indie music jabs, gotta love the GADGETS ~ And when i saw the sketches of the Vespabot (see 743 through 750 and more pics below)… and then the recent thread with Pintsize the AnthroPC, Winslow the follower Apple Anthro/Giant iPod, and the taming of the Roomba ~ it was just too fun not to show (those are 757 to current)

G Pure Energy

pureenergy.jpg
G Pure Energy ~ the latest in the Energy Drink shelf… brought to you by Norwegian Ole Sandberg, who’s claim to fame has been the deliciously beautiful Voss Water he brought to market with his friend Christopher Harlem. Just as with Voss, these boys know that the key to selling high end water (and energy drinks) are all in the packaging (and marketing, etc) ~ but *swoon* do they know how to design a sexy bottle… as a friend said “it looks like a hot girl”… so i guess that makes Voss the broad shouldered more masculine counterpart?

Although - from a design perspective - what do you think of the logo? That power symbol, just widen the gap ever so slightly to imply a G… is it overdoing the power/energy/G correlation? Absolutely gorgeous in the images, would love to see a real one in person, and taste it too… they’ve got some fun mixed drink ideas on the site as well.

What Is It? Apparently it’s “a unique blend of the tart flavor of Lime and the unique citrus flavor of Lulo (a Central and South American fruit with a subtle orange flavor), with only natural, healthy ingredients. The smooth, clear taste is delicious by itself or mixed with your favorite spirit. G Pure energy: Impeccable taste, nutrition and mixability.” Interesting… thanks to Melissa who tagged it ‘notcot’ on ThisNext.

Mimowars.

mimosw.jpg
Just announced, the final character in the upcoming first set of Star Wars Mimobots, and it does seem amusing to see R2D2 with arms and legs, and just seems oh so character like, and less of that iconic shape i associate him with. Adorable none the less, get your pre-orders in early, these could be the fun gifts for the holidays, that come january 8th~ so as the holidays wear off, and people have to get back into work mode… there will be something fun to look forward to. Oh, and i can only imagine what goodies these come preloaded with! Imagine if these made star wars noises when you plugged them in. (long day ~ and then been moving furniture for a few hours, for some reason the idea of the chewy one making that signature groan as you behead him and plug in the USB, makes me smile)

Giveaway Week 1: ThisNext

notsurvey.jpg
If you were wondering why we went a bit quiet this weekend… well, had some coding to learn, some designing to do, and our first Holiday Sponsorship/Giveaway/Survey to launch! As with all things NOTCOT, this is yet another little experiment. This is our way of giving back to everyone… some of our favorite companies get some exposure, readers get to win goodies, and we hopefully get to learn a little about who you guys are! (i have a tendency to be extremely curious about such things). So look forward to 4 weeks of fun prizes (a sponsor a week) with a combined value of ~$1500!

Week 1: is kicked off by ThisNext. You were some of the first to hear about their launch, heard about BlogIt before it even went live, and many of you have contributed to my ThisNext tags on the front page by tagging things ‘notcot’… chatting with Craig Ogg (ThisNext CTO) about this sponsorship, he reminded me to give you all a big THANKS! from ThisNext for all the great products you’ve been recommending over there ~ if you check out the site, you’ll notice lots of great design finds (and SO much more). I’m also excited to share a new section of the site: GIFT GUIDES! (more about the brand spankin’ new guides below.)

Single Speed - CANVAS

timbuk2can.jpg
Canvas Messenger Bags from Timbuk2. Hot out of the inbox, Timbuk2 just announced their new Single Speed line of bags: 6 bags; shown above are the Courier and Laptop Courier ~ there is also the Musette (modeled off the bicycle racer feed bag, thin and taller than it is wide), Relay (fatty musette thats more squarish), Slant (your asymetrical bike bag), and the Toe Clip (a large square messenger bag).

Ok, so i might have gotten a little link happy there. But i’m excited about their new line ~ finally something different in the messenger bag genre… Although part of why i love these so far is that they are a nice throwback to the old army surplus bags (i had a black one in high school i LOVED, until the canvas finally tore from the weight of everything). Also, this one doesn’t have velcro like my Chrome and the other Timbuk2s… so quieter during meetings… a bit hard to tell how these Toe Clip’s work though. Also i wonder how this would hold up in weather? I’m almost surprised there isn’t a hemp version. Anyhow, will get back with more info when i see one of these in person someday, But nice first impression.

Pleo

pleomain2.jpg
Pleo ~ he’s not just a robot. And yes he’s real (contrary to those blasphemous rumors that were flying around earlier this year).

Met up with Pleo (and Ugobe CEO, Bob Christopher) as they made their way through Beverly Hills ~ at the Peninsula Hotel Bar. This one week old Camarasaurus is a robot that pushes the bounds of emotional AI. I’m not a big “awwwww how cute” kind of girl, especially when it comes to my tech. But as much as i love the look and style of my vicious RoboRaptor, there was SOMETHING about this little guy that made me need to poke/pet it as soon as i sat down with it… and i only got to play with the prototype, whose skin isn’t even as perfect as in the production models!

For the skeptics ~ i can’t explain it ~ there’s something about the experience of the interaction that they’ve nailed. With a camera in his nose, various programed play patterns (he can do a body wave, shake hands, downward dog!, and more) which will even mix themselves up and evolve over time, he even responds to various voice fluctuations… the key with robots and these user experiences is to work so well, you never stop to wonder how it works, or why it isn’t working. And for a robot, his skin and motions (very quiet motions due to custom designed gears!) ~ really contribute to this surreal experience. Granted he’ll never replace your puppy… he kind of feels more like a jim henson character come to life, and really brings out the wide eyed kid in you. [loads more pics and a few more thoughts below]
