One laptop per child- 01.12.07

onechildpermain.jpg
Another CES highlight - getting to see the 100$ “One Laptop per Child” machine over at the AMD booth. We’ve been hearing about it for a while all over the internet, but to actually play with it, it was impressive to say the least… and i am a big believer in saving the future one laptop per kid at a time…

(excerpt from their faq) What is the $100 Laptop, really?
The proposed $100 machine will be a Linux-based, with a dual-mode display—both a full-color, transmissive DVD mode, and a second display option that is black and white reflective and sunlight-readable at 3× the resolution. The laptop will have a 500MHz processor and 128MB of DRAM, with 500MB of Flash memory; it will not have a hard disk, but it will have four USB ports. The laptops will have wireless broadband that, among other things, allows them to work as a mesh network; each laptop will be able to talk to its nearest neighbors, creating an ad hoc, local area network. The laptops will use innovative power (including wind-up) and will be able to do most everything except store huge amounts of data.

I am glad to see the drive that is being put into this. I am a tech support person and have been taking all my hand me down PC’s that are worth a flip and making them into a decent PC that I can pass on to kids I meet. I agree, a computer is much more then a toy, its a tool to enhance thier abilities.

I understand that this notebook pc is only available to 3rd world country school children, not to the United States. Please correct me if I am wrong because I am interested also.
