Tray Tables

traytable0.jpg

Tray Tables! Tables where the top is a removable tray. SO simple. SO basic. And you can really just take a tray you already have and love and give it some legs and call it a tray table. Lately i found myself loving some basic, minimal IKEA ones, and it sent me down a path researching some other clean, simple versions as well… so naturally, i couldn’t help making a post to share what i found (and keep track of some of the ones i liked!) Check them out on the next page!

NOTLABS: Passiflora Experiment

passiflora0.jpg

How mesmerizingly beautiful are Passiflora Flowers? AND they produce delicious Passion Fruit?!?! I’ve been looking for an excuse to plant some for a while, but didn’t want to have an area where the vines could engulf surrounding trees.

So, when a monster house popped up behind ours, Shawn and i were inspired to create a private nook off the bedroom. We imagined a trellis with L shaped bench - clean, simple, wooden and angled ever so perfectly to be comfortable to lean and lounge on. Something that would pair with both smaller coffee tables for hanging out, as well as a dining/work table when appropriate. Something that could withstand the elements, and inspire us every time we walk by. From the outside, the vines would slowly camouflage the structure, from the inside, you’d be seated in a lush, private oasis.

We designed and built it earlier this year, and i’ve been waiting to have the vines fill in and flower to take more pictures for a post… well, they have not only been filling in super fast, but also flowering, and are currently bearing quite a bit of fruit! So take a look on the next page for a peek at the process from start to finish… well the current state of it anyhow, who knows if we’ll keep adding more?!?!

Luxury Auto Espresso Cups, etc.

espresso0.jpg

As we ran around the LA Auto Show 2016, i kept noticing limited edition espresso cups (and mugs! but really, so many espresso sets) - so it started as a joke between Shawn and i to see if there were enough different luxury automotive espresso cups (direct from the brands) to have a full on little cafe… and the more i looked, the more i found… and they are pretty fun! So here’s a round up of mostly espresso cups, and then also some really crazy mugs and milk/sugar sets! And i suppose you could see this as a holiday gift guide if you’re looking to restock your home/office coffee setup or need some surprising gifts for the car folks who have everything - check it all out on the next page!

NOTlabs: Workshop Pergola/Deck

pergola0.jpg

We built a pergola/deck! When I get antsy for newness or itching to move, Shawn usually indulges me by helping rearrange rooms… or in this case, building a NEW room! Just off the garage/workshop, we’ve built a fun semi-covered/UV blocking space to work, play, brainstorm, etc. Also a perfect solution to minimize lawn coverage in the drought, and open up options for all kinds of new experiments and projects! For those following us @NOTlabs on Instagram, you may remember earlier this summer we built the pergola/deck just before embarking on the Nashville Project House adventure. We hit the road about a day after finishing it, and barely had a chance to hang out and enjoy it! And of course… moving so fast in my head, i totally forgot how much we’d done before leaving! So - going through my phone, i just found and rounded up our making of pictures - and i’m exhausted already! So on the next page you can see the full making of process, and some of the fun toys/tools we discovered to make it all possible. And… a peek at how it is currently - glowing with little spherical string lights and a work/hang out space below! (And of course, a bunch of ridiculous Bucky pictures along the way too.)

NOTlabs: Nashville Project House

housefinal0a.jpg

The NOTCOT Nashville Project House is done! And we are finally home in LA. For those who have been following along this summer, you know what an adventure it’s been for Shawn, Bucky, and I!!! (For those who want to catch up - you can see our Nashville Project House and inspiration posts as well as the Instagram hashtag.) We loaded up the car and drove out to Nashville early in June to close on a house, then proceed to fix it up, subdivide the lot, and rent it out before driving back across country. We weren’t exactly sure what we were embarking on, and naturally hit a few bumps along the way - but never stop learning more and more than we ever imagined!

As for how it all started - Shawn grew up in Nashville, and over the last 5 years, I’ve joined him on countless trips there. It’s incredible how much the city is transforming even month to month. As we’ve watched it all happen, after our Dec 2015 trip, we started watching the house listings out of curiosity thinking it might be a fun project to buy a house or a plot of land there… we’ve both long dreamed of building a house, and we love the city. Well, being us, the what-ifs didn’t last long, and in February we found one that intrigued us. Tiny house (650 sqft), but amazing lot (nearly half an acre!), super near a lot of our favorite bakery/chocolate/restaurants/cafes/bars as well as gorgeous parks, river, farmer’s market and downtown… with some amazing changes coming soon (i.e. Envision Cayce) and in a fun neighborhood with lots of nice folks. We basically spent March in talks with the seller’s realtor, and landed the house on Shawn’s 30th birthday! We gave the seller a long closing to get his affairs in order, and drove out at the beginning of June to close on the house. I thought THAT was the beginning… fixing up the house and subdividing the lot (a whole other story)… then we decided to find a renter while we figure out what the bigger plan is! Well now it’s rented out and we’re home… it turns out THIS is really the beginning (or another beginning) as we dream up our dream house for the empty lot!

So here it is - a peek at the before and after to put the last few month of process shots into perspective! See it all on the next page!

The Sill x Brian Giniewski

sill1.jpg

Yes, i know, i’m totally going through a plant obsession at the moment (as you can see on Instagram), and as usual that comes with a heavy design filter on it. It comes through phases, and between craziness my gardens have always been a source of inspiration, distraction, amusement, and fascination. Also - it’s spring! So even the folks who aren’t in year round, warm sunniness are all plant/garden happy at the moment! And it’s so contagious! With our California drought situation - while some are all about hardscaping and saving water, i’ve been finding myself wanting to SAVE THE TREES! My inner lorax is coming out every time we see people killing off their lush yards, only to hardscape them or fill them with “drought tolerant plants” and then proceed to not water them… AT ALL… and then a few weeks later we watch it all whither away… and their large stunning trees dry out and get blown over in the wind. It’s the saddest! So, the drought sucks, but our trees deserve some water too… they help purify the air, provide shade, and give so many native creatures a home! Anyhow - rant over - i’m kind of plant obsessed at the moment and having so much fun with it!

So on plant/design intersections… how awesome are these colorful cake like pots? This limited collection for The Sill by Brian Giniewski is just mesmerizing. Especially their popping pastel photoshoot! Each piece in the collection is a one of a kind artist edition that is hand thrown and kiln fired 4 times. And literally dripping with color. Take a look at the details on the next page!

The Cybex by Marcel Wanders “Parents Collection” that is freshly launching at Milan Design Week is making me glad we don’t have a baby… because that pig and rocker are pretty tempting! Rumpl Down Puffy

rumplmain.jpg

Wow. The Rumpl Down Puffy is SO WARM. The kind folks at Rumpl sent one over last week, and taking it up to the Cowboy Cabin in Julian, CA was the perfect test! At a “trekking size” of 54”x80” (like a slightly short twin) with 600 fill duck down insulation - it weighs in at a mere 1.12 lbs. And it is WARM. I overheat curled up with it on the couch at home, but in the cold rainy mountain night in a 1940’s cabin… it was perfect! I ran around outside in a tank top wrapped in the down puffy and stayed cozy. I curled up in it as we got the fire going, and it felt SO good! And when we needed an extra layer on the bed at night - it warmed us up fast! Though being made of 200 Ripstop Nylon (like a sleeping bag) is it incredibly slippery, so we had to retrieve it from wherever it would slide off to in the night. We’ll be tossing the Rumpl Down Puffy in the car for future road trips and adventures for sure! Check out the pictures and unboxing on the next page!

Gift Guide: Beach Blankets & Towels

towels.jpg

Remember the importance of the Towel in Douglas Adam’s Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy? “A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can’t see it, it can’t see you — daft as a brush, but very very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.” It isn’t so different in every day life, is it?

In holiday shopping and researching ‘things to want’… i kept running into multi purpose, cozy towel/blankets that are ready for everything from laying on the beach, picnicking in the grass, drying off the dog, keeping cozy on the couch… and then some. While trying to decide whether i “needed” a big circular The Beach People beach towel or a cozy indoor/outdoor Rumpl Puffy blanket… i realized i have quite a few others i have and LOVE… so here’s a Beach Blankets/Towels Gift Guide! After all, if it’s snowy and wintry out where you are, they can keep you cozy or heated pool ready… or remind you of beach adventures to come. Or if the beach is your backyard and it’s nice (enough) out - grab one and go relax! Head to the next page to see my picks!

Knit Collection by Curver

knit0.jpg Here’s the latest from London-based editor and resident zoologist, Justine Aw as she explores London Design Week 2015!

Knitting has definitely been making a trendy comeback as of late… from knitting covered tree/street objects graffiti, to super chunky knit rugs, hipster knitting magazines and more… now you can even get chunky knit plastic - KNIT by Curver! A collection of useful products, from baskets and bags to pet homes, poufs, and more, which all utilize a method of deep-texture injection to apply a 3D knitted look to plastic. Their site explains that, “The innovation of the deep-texture injection method has been developed after the success of the rattan-look series, which upon its introduction five years ago, established the emotional plastic category by applying a woven look to outdoor furniture.”

Their unmissable designjunction installation in collaboration with FranklinTill spans the 5 story staircase as well as the press room, and is a colorful showcase of the KNIT by Curver collection. Take a look at the details on the next page!

Heath Ceramics Alabama Chanin Collection

heath1.jpg

I can’t stop staring at this Alabama Chanin Collection at Heath Ceramics - They describe it as “The point of intersection between stitch and clay. A collaboration between Natalie Chanin and Heath ceramics yields an anthology of carefully crafted modern heirlooms in a new and permanent dinnerware line.” They are too beautiful to eat off of. Too fragile to hang on the wall in case of an earthquake. Yet they make we wonder if its pieces like these people put on registries, to collect up those stunning pieces you can already imagine passing on generation to generation. The white Camellia etched serving pieces and dinner plate - wow. Maybe i’ll give in to just one dinner plate? Take a peek at the rest of the stunning collection and savor the details on the next page!
