Vanessa Harden Seed Pills

seeds0.jpg Seed Pills! It seems like such a natural fit ~ everyone should be prescribed some seed pills to do their part and add a little more green to our world! Another project we encountered as part of the Selfridges’ GROW Concept Store and Guerilla Gardening Windows - Vanessa Harden’s seed pills. In addition to these clear pill capsules filled with seeds (which are purchasable in store), she has designed a series of “Subversive Gardener” concepts to do everything from launch the seeds from an umbrella’s top (as seen in her window display) or a bag to drill holes into the ground or a camera to launch seeds… as well as a “Horticulturalist Series” with seeds shooting out of a gun, or a walking stick… and more! Gel capsules with tiny seeds - melting down dispersed throughout the world, the idea of prescribing more green is just what some of us need! Take a peek on the next page…

No Picnic’s Alma Swings

swing0.jpg Thanks, Veuve Clicquot, our Milano Design Week sponsor! We adore their new origami inspired ice bucket, Clicq’up.

Definitely my favorite find of the day. I clearly have a thing for swings and for unique woody products that show off their original tree edges… well the Swedish No Picnic’s ALMA series of ‘social swings’ combine just that! They also remind me of the Loyal Loot Log Bowls! They feel like rough logs that were sliced to make a bench, then milled out and lacquered for a seat/seats in bold colors. Strung up with thick black rope, they are tied in clusters to the beams high above. Though a bit slippery, they certainly are gorgeous and fun to swing in! Apparently these are “meant to represent the soul of Sweden. As Leonardo Salzedo says, ‘As teamwork is needed to enjoy the swing, so in our everyday life a conjoint effort is important to reach a common goal’.” Gorgeous, fun, and in so many colors and sizes, they were a delight to swing in… take a peek at many pics of them on the next page ~ as well as some making of photos!

Portal 2: Investment Opportunities

portal2.jpg Just touched down in Milan ~ on things to look forward to upon arrival home next next week ~ Portal 2! Finally! But first to keep us going, while waiting a bit longer… three awesome videos of “Investment Opportunities” ~ looking at Panels, Bots, and Turrets! I’m conflicted as to whether to wish for more videos, or for the game to FINALLY arrive… So fun, so pretty, watch them all on the next page!

RSVP Berlin - Kaweco Pens

rsvpkaweco0.jpg On fun Berlin discoveries, my favorite store of the moment is a teeny, tiny, beautifully minimalist little stationery shop that just turned 10(!) ~ R.S.V.P. Papier in Mitte! And on irresistible pens, i had to have some of these Kaweco Pens (German made, and around since 1883) from the 30s ~ so pocket sized, so simple in their black and white plastic with both rollerball and fountain pen tips, and so many fun ink colors ~ all of which are in awesome packaging! The pens also come in more traditional aluminum in silver, charcoal, and black. These are all totally fun, affordable giftiness. The store is a wonderland of notebooks, cards, stickers, pens/pencils and more SO carefully curated and displayed. And, luckily they have an online store that ships internationally too! So quick hotel room photoshoot of the goodies on my Soho House floor, as well as a peek into the store ~ check it all out on the next page!

Tool Notebooks With Holes

notebook1.jpg On things that look like one thing but are really other things, these notebooks i found at Merci while in Paris are just that. From Japanese stationery line, D-Bros ~ these notebooks have images of tools on them… particularly tools that can hang! And then there is a hole so you can hang the notebooks as if hanging the tool… with hammers, scissors, paint brushes, shovels, and even ladles… they look great hanging in your office! While black and white on the covers, they are colorful within, with dotted pages in blue, yellow, pink. Check out the details of the hammer and scissor ones on the next page!

Morgans Hotels’ Minibar For The Mind

minibar00.jpg While minibars are often used to numb/relax the mind ~ and some have stimulating energy boosters and/or “toys” for your pleasure now ~ i love the idea of adding some intellectual stimulation as well. In addition the The School of Life Daily Aphorism cards that Morgans Hotels leave on your pillow each night, they have also come up with the Minibar for the Mind, and what better place to test this than at the gorgeous Redwood Room at The Clift in San Francisco? Inviting a few friends to truly explore the “Conversation Starters” over martinis… before they even sat down, the Daily Aphorism cards got us talking ~ “I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.” - Douglas Adams & my personal favorite “Between two evils, I always pick the one I haven’t tried before.” - Mae West. Words to live by, no? Inside each set, you’ll find: CONVERSATION STARTERS: A box set of 250 cards featuring questions, quotations and provocations to start tongues wagging. COLLECTED THOUGHTS: A volume of the best columns written by The School of Life’s faculty and friends. READING PRESCRIPTIONS: Two tailor-made reading prescriptions housed in corked test tubes, designed to evoke moods of relaxation or seduction. DREAMS & FEARS NOTEBOOK with WRITER’S BLOCK PENCIL SET: A notebook to write down your dreams and fears, and inspirational pencils to get you going. I think The School of Life and Morgans are on to something here… the universal nature of forcing us to think differently, reassess our surroundings, push boundaries… while not always easy, are fun and freeing and make for passionate discussions, be it with friends or strangers!

So, while i have gone through all 250 cards, and the STACK of daily aphorisms, i tried to pick out my favorite thought provokers to get you going, and even then, i ended up with FAR too many to share in one post. So, on the next page… see pics of some of my favorites, as shot in the candle lit inspiration of the Redwood Room, while sipping a Mandarin Lemongrass Martini (deliciousness!)…

Inside Bender’s Head: Futurama

futcoll0.jpg I know i’ve posted this before, i’ve gift guided it, and wishlisted it even. Well, i finally gave in an impulse bought it for myself. And inspired in part by how horrible the images of the Futurama Complete Collection are on Amazon, and also because it was just so over the top awesome i had to share the madness with you… this is the cutest and most bizarre DVD unboxing i’ve ever done. And the note tucked in the box with the giant head filled with DVDs is just so sweet as well… so, if you were considering the set too, trust me… it’s even awesomer in person. Go take a peek at the madness on the next page!

Futurama Season 5 Graphics

newfut1.jpg Gorgeous sunny day out, package arrives full of impulse bought Futurama and Dexter’s Laboratory from a nostalgic cartoon watching session over the weekend while catching up on life - emails - the internet. And the graphics on the Futurama Season 5 packaging were too pretty not to share. As much as my instant gratification side loves downloading, there is a definite packaging loss to the experience! So take a peek at the fun details on the next page!

Checkered Droplets at Morgans Hotel

droplets1.jpg Ok, don’t laugh, but i totally spent way too long this morning staring at the droplets in the Morgans Hotel shower. THEY HAVE CHECKERBOARD PATTERNS! And logically, it’s not even remotely a mystery how they appear, and indeed, i have found an upside to the rather intense bathrooms i complained about in the Penthouse post. And beyond staring at them too long in the shower, and flicking water at the glass to make MORE… first thing when i was done rinsing and repeating, i ran out and grabbed my dlsr to take pics of them to share with you while i sit here at the airport waiting to head back to sunny socal. Ahhhh, random shower inspiration. See more on the next page…

p.s. do you think the designer thought about this magical effect when they chose to make such crazy over-tiled walls?

Victorinox Tomo designed by Abitax

victomo0.jpg This CES content is sponsored by BestBuyOn.com. Thanks, Best Buy!!!

On unexpected discoveries at CES, deep in the Victorinox booth, amongst the excitement of their adorable new USB drives (love the Presentation Master)… my jaw dropped a little when i spotted a case of something so different tucked away. Freshly arrived with the Victorinox CEO, Carl Elsener yesterday, their team barely had information on this new design collaboration that just arrived! Luckily, Carl was kind enough to passionately explain the story behind this gorgeous new design collaboration. The Victorinox Tomo (meaning friend in japanese) is a beautifully designed and packaged minimalist knife by Tokyo designers, Abitax! The packaging is made of molded recycled paper, just like egg cartons! (But the Swiss variation, which is apparently a thicker, denser version than our American ones.) Apparently, Abitax was smitten with Victorinox Swiss Army Knives, but wanted something even more streamlined, so they designed not only the product concept, but also the packaging, before proposing it to Victorinox. They even have 14 colors they wanted to launch with, but initially we will see 7: Red, White, Blue, Green, Pink, Yellow, and a lighter Minty Green. The handles are in a matte, hard plastic feeling nylon, and seem perfect for everywhere from design stores as small gifts, to customizable corporate gifts. There is a Victorinox logo subtly pressed into the handle, as well as one on the exterior and interior of the packaging. You have to see more of the packaging and product up close on the next page!

Merry Christmas - With toys!

krxmas6.jpg Merry Christmas! Not sure why i’m up at 4am on christmas… and yes, still playing with toys into the night. Kidrobot sent over a fun christmas surprise ~ The Burglars Dunny by Saner… and the flocked santa beard was so hilarious, i couldn’t help but mix and match the accessories instantly. Doesn’t this Rocketworld guy just look far more distinguished in mustache/beard while wielding his spork? Really, all he needs is a monocle now! And you should see the James Jarvis King Ken snow gorilla with the reindeer skull on a stick! Oh, and the actual Santa Barbaja character too… see it all on the next page!
