Jennifer West Installation at Calvin Klein Sp10- 01.29.10

jenniferwest0.jpg I think i fell in love with the video installations of Jennifer West at the Calvin Klein Collection + LAND art event tonight… or perhaps, it’s the way people interacted with it. a large open space, multiple spastic video projections pulling you in ~ colorful, intriguing, and apparently the perfect thing to make stunning shadows as people passed in front of them. While i can’t seem to find a website for her, i did find this fun interview on Flash Art Online about these pieces! Turns out she’s a topangan! And the way she works with and physically manipulates real film fascinates me in this digital age… her love of and experimentation with abstraction and representation is beautiful! Beautiful and fun enough it certainly needed a post of its own! So take a peek at some of my favorite pics involving her projections from the night ~ as well as a video! That really gives you a good feel for the experience… i suggest playing it full screen in HD mode!

From the press release:

Calvin Klein Collection / Los Angeles Nomadic Division

“Los Angeles is such an important, high-profile city and we feel strongly that this is the right time for Calvin Klein Collection to make a statement there,” said Malcolm Carfrae, EVP, Global Communications, Calvin Klein, Inc. “We have been impressed by the work that LAND is doing to help raise the profile of emerging L.A.based artists under Shamim’s direction. We are pleased to be able to work with LAND on this unique evening, bringing art and fashion together, to coincide with Los Angeles Arts Month and Art Los Angeles Contemporary.”

“We are very excited to be working in collaboration with Calvin Klein Collection on this event, and are thrilled to have an additional opportunity to present Jennifer West’s work in this unique context,” said Shamim M. Momin, Director, LAND. “The Los Angeles art community is such an incredibly rich and dynamic one, and it is an amazing moment to be able to work with both the artists here and with a global brand that is so committed to supporting the arts in all respects.”

A dynamic installation of three films, never before screened in Los Angeles, will be presented by LAND artist Jennifer West.  The Los Angeles-based West makes 16mm, 35mm and 70mm films by manipulating the film celluloid to a level of performance. The film emulsion might be doused with perfume, alcohol, mascara or pepper spray, skateboarded on, kissed, or dragged through tar pits. West’s practice is characteristically influenced by urban mythology, folklore and popular culture, and often addresses issues of the body, of gender, and of self-presentation. West has shown her work widely throughout the United States and Europe, and is about to open a solo exhibition at the Kunstverein Nurnberg in Nurnberg, Germany in February.
