Rio Carnaval Beach Madness

beach0.jpg Still cleaning up photos (out of hundreds) between Rio madness with Veuve Clicquot… the beach during carnaval is insanity. So here’s a quick peek of pics of Ipanema from HELICOPTER… Hotel Fasano ROOFTOP… then from ON the beach. SO many people! And red umbrellas. And gorgeous weather… see it on the next page!

p.s. WAY more to come on the helicoptering. Absolutely stunning views which lead to FAR too many pics to figure out how to sort so far…

Veuve Clicquot Clicq'up Origami Bucket

vorigami1.jpg I’ve never had an ice bucket in my laptop bag traveling before… though after quite the hectic weekend running around Monterey/Pebble Beach/Carmel with all of the auto madness, it is pretty amazing to pop up to santa cruz, out to the patio, pop open the Veuve Clicquot Clicq’up, grab some ice, and pop open a bottle of Yellow Label on the balcony staring down at the beach and bay as you hear the waves crashing, seagulls squawking, and seals honking. I wrote about the Clicq’up Origami Ice Bucket by Mathias van de Walle earlier this year when it launched in Milan, here’s a peek at it in person ~ popped up on the balcony!

The Standard + Quiksilver Boardshorts

theshorts0.jpg There is really only so much you can get about an actual user experience, packaging, presentation of a product from press photos. You saw what i had to show you about the launch in the previous post... For the rest you just have to go play with them in their natural setting! So for part one of the posts from The Standard Downtown LA's rooftop pool party with Quiksilver to launch their boardshort collaboration ~ let's focus on the SHORTS! And the vending machine! And the people wearing them! And then on to the rest later... I was lucky enough to get a chance to sneak away from the party to play with samples in one of the Standard rooms ~ so actual close up pics of the adorable pouches and details on the next page too! Take a peek at it all on the next page!

P.S.
I wish they had them smaller than a 30! The feel amazing ~ dry super fast ~ and are so cute with the retro upside down labels, pouches, special buttons, and more... the bikini is adorable too (subtle stripes, oh so soft, cutest buttons ever on your bum)... and to purchase them, its ok if you're not by the pool vending machine ~ they are also on the Standard online store!

Standard Boardshorts by Quiksilver

quicksilver1.jpg I've never lusted for board shorts before, well not men's anyhow... but i must say these Standard Boardshorts by Quiksilver are tempting! Not to mention they are sold in VENDING MACHINES (which are really all the rage lately) ~ and come in an "odor resistant waterproof travel bag" ~ and much like the standard, the labels are upside down (and adorably retro styled too)... but perhaps most unique of all? Inside each waistband is a list of addresses... a quick tips city guide precisely curated by Natas Kaupas. With a limited edition of 250 of each product, and so much attention to detail, this premier collaboration between The Standard and Quiksilver is stunning.

Now as for the style itself, these are "based on the original retro design from Echo Beach era - New wave/post punk style first pioneered by pro surfer Danny Kwock." There is also a "Standard Issue" Bikini for us ladies, but i'm curious to see how the shorts fit girls too... You can find them at The Standard Shop, as well as the poolside vending machines at the hotels. Also exciting? "Official launch event will be a pool party on the rooftop of The Standard Downtown LA on Aug 8th and from Aug 8-16, the hotel will have "ECHO BEACH RETROSPECTIVE, 1978-1982: Surf Culture Art Exhibition" show. Includes art, photography, paintings, film, vintage beachwear, and surfboards curated by Will Pennartz of The Surf Gallery. Art show admission is free." ~ See you there! As for now, see lots of pics on the next page of all the gorgeous details!

SurfMonk Beach Blankets

surfmonk0.jpg SurfMonk ~ i wrote about these comfy cozy looking surf coverups and blankets over a year ago, but only just caught up and checked them out in person. As you can see, i couldn't resist, and brought some home! These are the types of things you definitely need to check out in person, or at least have someone you trust check it out ~ but they feel AMAZING. My car is always ready for the beach, and this just made the cut, it is such an incredible (super secret special blend) bamboo/cotton terry used, that once you feel it, you will want the whole line. SurfMonk opened up a showroom/store in Malibu this May, so in yesterdays gorgeous socal beach weather i cruised up PCH to check it out, and lucked out ~ and designer/owner, Claudia Taylor, was in! It's so nice to meet people who are incredibly passionate about their lives and business ~ and it's clear that she cares about every aspect of SurfMonk ~ from the great tagline sewn into every hood "We are all islands, oceans connect us." to the luscious custom materials locally made here in LA to the simplicity and comfort of the pieces. The classic pieces are large monk like robes large enough for surfers to both change underneath and curl up in. (Really, slanket lovers would just adore these)...

my favorites though ~ are the blankets! It's so hard to find the perfect beach blanket, and this is my new fave. Also the strap she has designed for them are incredibly simple, versatile and functional ~ nothing a little tension can't take care of? With cozy terry shoulder pads, cotton/hemp straps, and brass clips ~ loop it around just about anything, clip it together, and you're good to go! Also the wrap skirts! And the kids robes are adorable! Take a peek at details of the newly opened store and details on the next page!

p.s.
i always hated that phrase "No man is an island" - much prefer "We are all islands, oceans connect us."

Beaching in CT

beach0.jpg I'm not sure how much you've noticed, or how much you follow, but its been a crazy few months ~ a lot of big behind the scenes transitions happened here at NOTCOT, and in a nutshell i'm more on my own than ever running the network at the moment, and i've been traveling a bit and chatting with a lot of fun folks as i try to figure out where to take things next! The group of NOTCOT sites has grown more than i could have ever dreamed over the last few quick years! SO, for those who ARE playing close attention ~ yes the style of content here on NOTCOT.com has been bouncing around a bit as i figure things out, and mostly i'm sticking to writing about what inspires and amuses me, which for the moment while exploring NYC has been a bit more on the luxe/event side of things, and bouncing between hotels and friends, i haven't had the time/space to do those product review/photoshoots as much as usual, but no worries, i hear there are a pile of packages waiting in LA for that, so back to more regularly schedule programming soon? I'll be heading back to LA Weds!

Part of my figuring things out personally means running around and exploring and reminding myself what it is that really drive and inspires me, and re-evaluating what's out there, and what awesomness we should be finding, making, sharing here on the NOTCOT sites! So, on mixing things up ~ i jumped out of the many meetings and super-city feeling running around in NYC and joined an old high school friend at his friend's beach house in Milford, CT this weekend ~ and after so much city, i think private beach relaxing with a bunch of fun new drama/theatre folks was *just* what i needed to get things in perspective. So take a peek, at my weekend reset ~ i'll be in NY a few more days, than back to catch up and design + beach overdosing LA style soon...

p.s.
THANK YOU so much for supporting me, and the sites the last few years ~ it's been so much fun! And so incredibly inspiring to meet and chat with many of you ~ seeing the incredible things you readers make is really so fun to wake up to every day!

p.p.s.
The full moon over the water this weekend was just AMAZING. See the pics next page...

Annenberg Community Beach House

beach0.jpg On incredible openings ~ today the Annenberg Community Beach House opened in Santa Monica. "A public place henceforth: The story of the Beach House is one of evolution from private to public. the facility is open to all, no membership required." It is the only one of it's kind on the california coast!

Originally built by William Randolph Hearst for silent film star, Marion Davies, in the late 20's ~ it later became a hote; ~ then a private beach club, and was even on of the settings of Beverly Hills 90210 ~ then shut down after the '94 quake. After 10+ years of planning (and i've been driving past this spot since i was a kid almost daily!) ~ it's amazing to see what it has evolved into. Set right on the beach in Santa Monica ~ the house has been restored for events, there is a beautiful pool (with stunning restored tiles), cafe, pool house, volleyball/tennis courts and more... and there is even a bicycle valet! And its a green facility! Silver LEED Rating and all...

For its big launch this morning ~ there were events for everyone ~ from Cirque Du Soleil performers to synchronized swimmers and sand castles.... kite flying and power volleyball exhibitions... and so much more. While i wasn't able to make it, Sanna Björn, biked over with camera in tow, and took SO many incredible pictures of the event to share with us! Take a look at her experience on the next page! (Thank you, Sanna!)

IKEA Sandig

toysmain.jpg I have an impulsive need to indulge my inner child... especially when shopping... like when wandering through IKEA, i got terribly distracted by the kids toys, particularly how fun these new Sandig beach toy sets are! And the 99 cent shovel/super scooper claw thing... great quality, and adorable ideas ~ i picked up three of the four 2.99$ sets with the justification that i needed to take pics of them to show you. Granted, i don't think kids should be encouraged to eat sand/dirt, i think these are quite fun for those who know better. First kit ~ Ice Cream! A little bucket with an ice cream scoop, 4 cones, and 4 cups... Second kit ~ Baking! Three pans that would be so fun to incorporate into sand castles... like a bundt cake castle? Compete with cake knife, etc... Third set ~ Bricklayer! The mold to make bricks, smooth out the cementy wet sand, etc... can you imaging the possibilities? And the Fourth set i passed on was the gardening one... usual bucket, rake, shovel... not too exciting, but still cute. Anyhow, take a peek at the pics of these sets close up on the next page ~ i was impressed with the quality and design details ~ and for the price was tempted to buy up a bunch and run around the beach giving them away to kids...

Surfmonk

surfmonk.jpgFlipping through a free issue of Malibu magazine that i grabbed from our usual thai place... i noticed an ad for Surfmonk... and while i have managed to live in many a beachy cities/towns, i never did manage to get on a surfboard, but do feel most at home bumming out on the beach... (the TasteSpotting drama that has yet to die down has been tormenting me for about 2 months now... maybe that's why i'm suddenly finding myself hunting for cozy, comfy, relaxing products/environments lately).

Anyhow, Surfmonk! A line of eco-friendly bamboo terry robes, cover-ups, blankets, and more for men, women, and even kids! They range from full length friar tuck/jedi robes to these shorter cover-up hoodies i'm coveting, and i love the way their cozy looking beach blanket has a padded shoulder strap... also check out the cute knee length fanny wrap and more close ups on the next page! So tempting, to grab some, a good book, and road trip down the coast stopping and laying out on the beaches all the way down...
