tiger0.jpgsamsung netbooks On fun packaging that has recently shown up ~ how awesome is this Made Of Japan (TAB Exclusive Boxed Edition) by Onitsuka Tiger ~ the packaging is stunning with a laser cut tiger motif on the cardboard sleeve that i'm just itching to spray paint as a stencil to see how it would look... The Arkitip Intel Newspaper Supplement

arkitip0.jpg Freshly landed in my mailbox, the fanciest wrapped newspaper yet ~ The Arkitip Intel Newspaper Supplement, Volume No. 1 ~ it came preciously sealed in plastic in a stiff mailer ~ i felt like i should save it forever and not open it, but curiousity got the best of me... again. So what is this mysterious newspaper? Here's how the folks at Arkitip describe it:

"What better time than the present to publish our first newspaper. Going against the grain has never stopped us before and no matter what might be happening with news media and publishing in general, we will always continue to work on and publish projects that interest us.

Over the years, The Arkitip Intel has evolved into an online publication that brings together the most unique voices in the world of art, fashion, music, design, and retail. Now we're taking The Intel into the tactile realm.

The Arkitip Intel Newspaper Supplement will feature all twenty of our reporters expanding their online musings to the printed page. Four colors on 22 x 11 In. broadsheet newsprint, packaged in re-sealable bag."

It's pretty awesome ~ i love the smell/feel of newsprint ~ there's just something fun about flipping through the paper! So are you ready to take a peek inside? And i just love that Ace Hotels ad up there ~ tempted to frame it for constant typographic reassurance... See pics of the un-wrapping and flipping on the next page!

Monocle LA

monocle1.jpg So last night i finally got to meet Tyler Brule!!! Pretty sure he has no clue who i am, but he was totally on my list of people i looked up to (as far as fun lives and awesome careers...) Unfortunately people are seldom as amazing as you build them up to be in your head, right? (Perhaps this is why i freak out about meeting readers!) I was slightly saddened, although not all that surprised, that Brule said LA was casual to a fault... (more juicy details coming up in the LAist interview Kemp did while there)... and can you believe it's all run on only 35 people? Tyler and his super nice PR folks popped in from Tokyo and London, and many were popping off the next day already...

ANYHOW, the most exciting thing of all? The second international Monocle store has opened! And right in one of my childhood hangouts, the Brentwood Country Mart! In fact, i still hang out there, the food and shopping is so delicious and chill (mmm mrs beasleys, burritos, james perse, and that awesome apothecary). But i digress... adorably cute shop, set up like a little living room you can settle in to, read some Monocle, browse the website, and the best part? Finally we have a local shop to check out those gorgeous Porter bags, notebooks, candles and more! Personally i may need to go back and grab some of the adorable posters! They wouldn't let me take pics inside the shop, but you can however see just about everything from outside the super cute space! Take a look at more pics on the next page!

p.s.
I was surprised how incredibly low key and what a mixed crowd this event was! It felt more like a picnic than a launch party...

New Yorker 2009 Eustace Tilley Contest

newyorker1.jpg On fun design contests ~ just saw the final picks from the New Yorker's 2009 Eustace Tilley design contest, and i love what their picks say about the state of things in 2008 ~ everything from iPhones and Banksy to Watchmen and Mondrian... Can you believe Eustace has been on nearly every cover in the magazine launched in 1925? The original was created by Rea Irvin. Check out a few more of my favorites on the next page, and the full gallery here.

NOTCOT in Lucky Magazine Nov 08

luckypost.jpgIt is a total trip (for me) to open a magazine or website and see myself on it ~ i am definitely a behind the camera kind of girl? Remember that photoshoot i showed you back in august at A+R? Well the Lucky Magazine Nov 2008 issue is now out, and i'm in the Webpages section on page 54! Also on the main Lucky website and the Sites We Love section. Scans and screenshots on the next page for those who want to see! It's awesome to be featured in a magazine i've actually read since inception, and has inevitably influenced NOTCOT throughout the years.

The Immaculate Threads by Dominic Wilcox

jobs4.jpgPerhaps one of the best parts INSIDE that Esquire 75th Anniversary E-ink covered magazine.... they commissioned a variety of artists to create the imagery to go with their 75 most important people pieces. And most eye catching... is certainly Dominic Wilcox's "The Immaculate Threads" ~ which cheekily takes on Steve Jobs' uniform of glasses, jeans, and black turtleneck... and places them in iPod like clear plastic containers, all perfectly lined up... It certainly reinforces the idea of Jobs as God (the god who gave us the jesus phone?). Can't you just picture him getting his dry cleaning in these boxes, popping one open, and he's ready to go for the day? See more images of the piece on the next page!

Dissecting Esquire's E-Ink Cover

eink1.jpgI'm sure by now you've heard about Esquire's 75th Anniversary Cover ~ limited edition of 100,000 ~ with real E-Ink embedded in the cover. Over at Esquire, they've even opened up the discussion about whether you can hack it... and even show you where it all came from... So as a random Sunday amusement, couldn't help picking it up from the newsstand, and as much as i resisted, i lasted a few minutes before i HAD to rip it apart and poke at the digital guts. So on the next page you can see video of it before and after, pictures of how it works, and scans as well!

Lucky Photoshoot

lucky.jpgWhat a bizarre morning, definitely one of those, surreal, "this isn't my life" kind of mornings... up at 6:30, over at A+R store in Venice for a Lucky Magazine photoshoot (nov issue) by 8 (and you know i don't really do mornings!)... honestly so bizarre being on that side of the camera. I think its definitely safe to say i'm most comfortable behind the lens! And fascinating to watch pros in action ~ we worked with photographer Joe Schmelzer and make up artist Asia Geiger. Funny thing was the iPhone 3G fest at the shoot, and the many complaints and comparisons about mobile me, black vs white, cases, etc. Anyhow, few people asked for pics, so dan snapped a few of the process you can check out on the next page!

p.s.
While we were chatting, i learned about a new blog that Elise Loehnen, Lucky Editor At Large, who set this all up, just launched - check out Style Steals.

Studio Number One's Simple Pleasures

simplepleasures.jpgPerfect way to spend a saturday? With good friends, old and new, surrounded by inspiration of all forms (zines, art, artists, designers, photographers, musicians)... in the world of OBEY Giant... as magically facilitated by Shepard Fairey's Studio Number One, who graciously opened up their parking lot to set the scene for the first Simple Pleasures event, "an on-going series of cultural investigations" - This one was focused on zine culture, and in addition to many booths ~ there was an Obey raffle (5$ got you a tote bag of goodies and a chance to win some limited ed posters) ~ the delicious Green Truck lunch truck (amazing burgers, all organic and local, and runs on biodiesel) ~ bake sale of 1$ tempting sweets ~ and we got to kick back to tunes of the DJ Diabetic (Shepard Fairey) and Daedelus... oh and on mind blowing experiences, i got a tour/sneak peek of the studio space of Studio Number One, a chance to take in all the art and inspiration filling their walls... and even chat with Shepard Fairey in his incredible office (wall to wall art and books and toys)... peek at some upcoming works... and wander the Subliminal Projects Gallery downstairs as well... all in all, a phenomenally inspiring day all around. I can't wait for Simple Pleasures 02!

Ok, so it's 4am on a Saturday night, i just got home... and as much as i claim i'll head right to bed... after i take a peek at my pics... you know me... i can't help but share them with you before i crash. SO, here's the compromise... first things first, see the next page to see the experience of Simple Pleasures, and coming soon will be a peek into the Studio Number One and Shepard Fairey's studios!

The Chocolate Eames House

eames1.jpgFor their latest Design Issue, Canadian magazine The Block commissioned chocolatier Thomas Haas to replicate the now-iconic 1949 Eames House in CHOCOLATE! Funniest thing is that this house is right down the street, and i've probably driven by multiple times a day for years...

"This sweet miniature design mimics the original structure Charles and Ray Eames created as part of Arts & Architecture magazine's Case Study Houses program. The program asked prominent architects of the day to design affordable and cost-efficient homes as possible solutions to the post-WWII housing boom. The modernist Pacific Palisades home is a semi-prefab wonder; the airy steel-and-glass structure with its brightly coloured panels was built in just three days. The Block's modernist chocolate dollhouse took 30 hours to complete."

Check out the photos, The Block issue cover, and article (including Thomas Haas' Chocolate Shortbread Recipe)... perhaps it's inspiration for gingerbread house building this year?

The Fall Of Steve Jobs

stevejobs1.jpgWe were cleaning out more of the log cabin, and when we started poking through desk drawers, dan and i both laughed when out popped Steve Jobs on the cover of the August 5, 1985 issue of Fortune Magazine - and the headline read "The Fall Of Steve Jobs"... funny article in retrospect too (see images on the next page)...filled with great pop cultural references of the time "John Sculley, 46, president and chief executive, ruefully remarked that Apple's moves were attracting as much attention as an episode of Dynasty." There were also statements like "No players in the drama have explained publicly why Jobs came to grief. But several of them, promised anonymity, have revealed the essential details to Fortune." ~ can you imagine if any apple insiders were so bold today? Ah, how times have changed since 1985... Equally worthwhile, the ATT ad that runs next to the article... and the "Picture Phones: New Spin On An Old Idea" article that sits next to "Droids For Sale: Star Wars' George Lucas if pushing new technology"... suffice to say, this is a quality issue of Fortune, and a nice way to get some perspective on exactly how far we've come in the last 23 years... See the details on the next page!

Black Viewmaster + Arkitip

arkitip.jpgI've wanted a black viewmaster since the "Gifts for your Indie Ninja" list from my ThisNext days, but alas, i've been lazy and forgot to buy one... so when i saw that the latest issue of Arkitip, No. 0044 HIGHMATH ~ is a collaboration with one of my favorite Danish collectives, Wood Wood... and comes in a box with "1 Exhibition catalog, 3 image reels, 1 3D viewer"... i grabbed my credit card. How could i give up a chance at a black viewmaster (with white Arkitip, Wood Wood, and Nike branding) as well as fun art? Perhaps we need to get some branded NOTCOT Viewmasters, and every month/week/random whim we can send out a mysterious reel of inspiring imagery?

Vogue - Lockpicks - Hacking

voguehack.jpgIs Vogue advocating lockpicking and hacking? So i was half awakenly flipping through the december issue of Vogue (the penelope cruz one) ~ Staring at this image, i was initially surprised that they don't mention the word 'lockpick' in the post - focusing on the "hacksaw blades, a paperclip, and keychains" in the caption... the torn page sat next to me as i read up on Claire Fontaine and the Passe-Partout pieces... and these most definitely ARE lockpicks... cut from hacksaw blades (brilliant, it might be one of my new favorite pieces!) And then i looked closely at the ridiculously small print that was tucked into the spine of the magazine which only became apparent once torn out... and i see the following links...
http://www.lysator.liu.se/mit-guide/mit-guide.html
http://www.hackerethic.org
http://www.lockpicks.com
http://www.lockpicking101.com
http://www.gregmiller.net/locks/makelockpicks.html

Is it terrible that i find it highly amusing that Vogue is showing people where to go to learn to pick locks and the hacker ethic (the hackerethic.org seems to be squatted on... don't they check links?) - See image of the full page and a close up of the tiny print in the spine below...

Also ~ take a look at Claire Fontaine - which few know as the "Paris-based collective founded in 2004, but the French brand of school supplies it is named after, whose logo is everywhere stamped on the tools of their trade." Frieze magazine has a great article on them by Vivian Rehberg. "Appropriation is an artistic strategy laden with precedents, and one of the ways Claire Fontaine distances herself from those is by advocating theft. 371 Grand (2006) copies of keys to Reena Spaulings Fine Art in New York made using the same process the FBI employs, and Passe-partout (Paris 10ème) (2006), a set of lock picks, hacksaw blades and a small flashlight hung on an ‘I Love Paris’ key-chain, are wryly subversive little sculptures, especially when accompanied by the lock-picking demonstration in the video Instructions for the sharing of private property (2006). As an extension to these works, Claire Fontaine has offered to duplicate keys to galleries that show her art, and to sell them titled with the gallery’s address, therefore granting the purchaser access to the valuable objects held there. In two recent Paris exhibitions, versions of Passe-partout were hung nonchalantly on a hook, ready for the taking. But, just as she expected, nobody walked off with them."

UPDATE - figured out where they got their links from... as well as some images of the FBI piece and more keyring sets...

Elemente

elemente.jpgI was approached by Elemente Magazine a few months back, and i hadn't heard of them. Apparently they are "Canada's Alternative Design Magazine" on Architecture + Design + Lifestyle + International (as it says on the cover)... and they have been Nominated Best New Magazine in Canada (also on the cover). Well this is definitely one not to pass up on the newstands ~ its a nice super glossy design mag filled with a lot of content similar to what you find here at NOTCOT. In fact the O2 Cocoon i previously wrote about turned up on the cover of the latest issue! They have nice clean layouts, great typography, and i do love the super glossy paper. After being quite impressed with the back issues Elemente editor, Angus MacKenzie sent over, i even agreed to write a few short pieces for the latest issue (first time being in print as a writer!)... so i couldn't help but share a few quick pics with you this Friday evening. You can check out my blurbs online at Elemente ~ but for frequent readers, it's nothing you haven't seen here... new copy, but i covered the Puma Urban Mobility line, Oxo Corn Stripper, and Art + Cook for them. Also check out the Elemente site for more insight on what else you can find in their magazine.

NotCouture in Newsweek

newsweekmain.jpg
NotCouture in the July 16, 2007 Newsweek. Featured on the Checklist of The Tip Sheet, Newsweek says "SURF notcouture.com. Submit posts to this design-centric fashion Web site where editors pick the most stylish products for public viewing and voting and, of course, buying."

We're all really excited about this mention, and big thanks to all the readers who sent it in, and an extra big thanks to Victoria for sending me these scans (especially since i've been having a bit of trouble tracking down this issue!). We're especially flattered to have this mention, since we're still in beta, and the official launch (with goodies to go with) will be July 30th for NotCouture.

Playground

playground.jpg
Playground ~ is it a magazine? is it art? is it a dripping rubber box? Apparently it "is an unbound collection of fashion + art in exclusive numbered limited editions"... "is a means for free, spontaneous plays between famous and emerging artists, fashion photographers and illustrators from all over the world"... "is not a magazine, but a personal gallery encrusted in custom designed collectible box." SO, there you have it, it explains everything and nothing?

However, the launch party will be at Anna Kustera in NY tomorrow night, so maybe someone can go take a peek for us and shed some light on what's really inside that white Dror Benshetrit box that "characterizes the movement of liquid dripping in a tactile and plastic form". There are only 250 sets, and they are $600... and there is quite the list of who's who thats part of the secrets in the box!

Monocle's Kitakoga

kitakogamain.jpg
So, i've procrastinated on flipping through Tyler Brule's latest endeavor - Monocle "a briefing on global affairs, business, culture, & design" ~ and i think it might me one of my new favorite reads... but the real question is how did no one tell me about Kitakoga? The pull out manga in the back of the issue ~ think-- the comic book for the Bruce Wayne set? I'm hooked. And the blatant product placement made me giggle the whole time (who wants a prada phone now?)...

Here's the premise (go on, read it out loud to yourself in that dramatic voice-over tone): "Spring -- 2010. A Democrat is running the White House, Sweden is about to take up the reigns of the EU Presidency, NATO is still heavily engaged in Afghanistan and The Horn of Africa is up for grabs. On the opposite side of the rapidly melting polar ice cap, Canada has become the self-appointed guardian of the top of the world and Russia's playing catch-up. China is still basking in post-Olympic glory and South Korea has become the region's new creative powerhouse. In the middle of all of this, Japan has assumed a more assertive role not only within Asia but also globally. The country stunned the world in 2009 with the surprise launch of a corps of robotic soldiers it deployed to protect its embassy in Beirut and has been working on the launch of a new unmanned air vehicle that has sparked the curiosity of governments around the world. A special branch of the defence ministry has been established to safeguard the technology. Shinobi (shadow ninjas) are the guardians of the Rai-zing (Thunder of God) project."
The animated feature should be done by the Batman: animated series folks in collaboration with the Evangelion team? [Lots more below]

Antenna

antennamain.jpg
Antenna ~ go write it down. This is a magazine to look out for this summer! Preview issue just showed up and i'm smitten. As much as blogs amuse me, they will never replace my need for magazines... something about precise layouts, the touch and smell of paper, the way you can FLIP through a stack of pages... its not to be replaced! That being said, Antenna got my magazine excitement going again, especially since it has some fun graphic design, and reads like a mix between Lucky magazine and design magazines with a dash of the street/skate scene. (oh and its more guy slanted, but without the softcore)... this issue literally goes from A to Z as you can see in the contents page, and between the "real" articles... i'm loving their layouts for themed pages... like roundups of great glasses, cell phones, candy, condoms, bomber jackets, skateboards, and so much more... so here's a sneak peak of some of my favorite pages to keep you going until August 2007! [and the (N)EEDS- morning after section cracked me up.]
