It’s hard to miss Los Angeles’ massive art celebration right now… Pacific Standard Time Performance and Public Art Festival is happening all over the city January 19-29, and is apparently ” the largest cultural collaboration ever undertaken in the region.” Amongst the art and experiences popping up… one of the most surprising and amazing videos to surface is the one of rapper Ice Cube celebrating his passion for the Eames. Did you know he studied architectural drafting in his pre-NWA days? Got to love the way he ends it - saying “Who are these people who got a problem with LA? Maybe they mad cuz they don’t live here.” Yay! For LA!
Ok ~ so the awesome folks at TBWA\Chiat\Day have given us limited edition (of 250) Pacific Standard Time/Ice Cube/Eames posters to giveaway to you guys! For a chance to win ~ leave a comment OR tweet us (@NOTCOT) with YOUR unexpected passion (you know ~ the one besides your obvious dayjob/primary passion.) And we will email or D tweet the winners on Weds Jan 25th, 2012. (Please follow @NOTCOT so i can D you if you win!)
… and for now see more pics of the poster as well as the video of Ice Cube on Eames on the next page!
Catch up with the latest from London with our UK-based editor Justine Aw.
You may noticed the little spectacled cormorant in our post on the Ghosts of Gone Birds exhibition. The cormorant is part of the visual identity of the exhibition, created by Peter Hodgson of Goodpilot. Having a strong visual identity throughout the show really helps tie all of the diverse pieces together. Here is a closer look at the visual identity work from the show, including the lovely logo and series of ghost stories and other materials. Read more about the stories behind the posters here.
Yay! Portal 2. (Boo PSN has been down though, and for days?!?!) Reddit thread about guy turning the in-game posters into high res images… lead to this gallery of images from the game… and really, the writers and designers had far too much fun with Portal 2. The details are so fun, here’s a peek at some of my favorites!
p.s. and if you’ve missed them, the Investment Opportunity videos are so fun!
Beautiful minimalist posters by Mark Brooks for Santa Monica Legitimate Wear in Barcelona. My favorite is definitely the Turbulence poster above, and the Deer, Gorilla, and Giraffe aren’t exactly what you’d expect too! Mies is more takes a splattery look at the Barcelona chair… check them out on the next page!
Save the date! Jan 15th. Gallery 1988 : Venice (Grand Opening!) presents MULTIPLAYER: Limited Edition Posters Inspired By Video Games! And curated by the super awesome OMG Posters. As they say - “Opening January 15th at their new Venice gallery, Multiplayer will feature over 30 limited edition prints based on classic video games. You can see most of the artists on the list below, but there will also be a surprise or two.” Can’t wait!
Freshly launched, an adorable series of prints ~ Amanda Visell’s Posters for Girls… while my natural inclination towards things too girl focused is that it’s reverse sexist against boys… (and really, i’m just not that girly pink kind of girl)… i do find myself wanting to gift these prints to a bunch of my friends who are new moms with adorable baby girls. Seriously, what girl doesn’t need the poster of the knight? To grow up remembering the importance of having the ability of self-saving (also dragon-friend-making is key!) - granted whether/when you USE that ability is a whole other lesson. I look at the maverick one, and i just think of poor goose. and iceman… but she is looking pretty bad ass with the parachute and aviators. And the captain is pretty cute too ~ though, the wild bigfoot beast frightens me a tiny bit, but the trees are so happy! See them all on the next page!
Your favorite nightmarish monsters have never been cuter than this 4 poster series of Monster Friends by Family Tree design and illustration i discovered at OMG Posters. There is The Kraken by Alex Pearson, Yeti by Jeff Kandefer, The Lochness Monster by Andy Young, and The Sasquatch by Julian Baker! See close ups on the next page…
HAPPY BLACK FRIDAY!!! To kick off the holiday season, i’ve decided to do something a little different this year. We’ve invited a few people and companies that we’ve grown to love over the years and inspire us constantly to share their stories, processes, and/or a behind the scenes look at their world and the amazing products that come out of it. Also, they love you guys enough that most of them also wanted to give you guys presents ~ so this year it’s about feature stories and giveaways! And i might not be able to resist and might make a few new gift guides or more products as well. Additionally we’re working on bringing back and cleaning up the gift guides of the previous years, since 99% of those products i’d still gift in a heartbeat! So i’m working and shopping this black friday, expect to see the new NOTCOT Gift Guide 2009 section evolve a bit over the next few days, its my fun sandbox to play with some new ideas…

Latest from the 826 LA - Echo Park Time Travel Mart... a second set of posters designed by Amy Martin! I think i'm loving this series even more than the last! Its the details that really get you... take a look at them up close on the next page!
And on a side note - on completely amazing things that have actually left me baffled as to how to properly share it with you... the ESSENTIALLY ODD BOOK ~ basically a design catalog of all the products produced for all of the 826 stores/tutoring centers, is just incredible. A definitely MUST own/gift/read. Hardest part has been trying to figure out what pages to share with you, when every one is so fascinating... but post to come soon perhaps. Or maybe i'll have to show you stuff from each section bit by bit... (ideas? thoughts?)
Anyhow ~ go see the fun new posters in their entirety on the next page!
Woke up smitten by the work of Anthony Burrill this morning as i went through his posters on Concerte Hermit... and realized it all felt so familiar because of his Wallpaper Covers back in June 2008. See more on the next page!
Late night browsing: these Horizon Fire posters caught my eye while catching up on Change The Thought. The work of Manchester-based designer Paul Tebbot is just stunningly retro, minimalist, and utterly captivating! See 3 more of my favorites on the next page!
Wow. OMG Posters just turned me on to the amazingly inspiring and beautiful posters and illustrations of Jay Ryan and The Bird Machine ~ his incredible print shop of Skokie, IL. His latest work is this pair of NYE posters for HUM (and they just went on sale this morning!) ~ and i was so smitten by the gorgeous color palettes and sketchily playful yet serious potrayal of all the creatures (with a paul smith like striped background), i just wandered through his 13+ years of portfolio gallery...
I've found that his animal works are the most inspiring to me ~ so i've rounded up a bunch of my other favorites on the next page for you to browse ~ his 7 poster series for "Our Planet is a Blue Planet" is just beautiful! Also amusing as his animal stacks... from walrus heads to towers of farm creatures...

Change The Thought posters ~ aren't they beautiful? Beautifully inspiring? I couldn't decide which ones of these 4 to show as the main image, so decided to post them all - close ups on the next page... although as i stare at these more and more, i think i'm most smitten by the "Sunshine" and the "One day we'll show them why the world made us."!
I giggled when i first saw these "Command" posters on Swiss Miss... and then as i read them all a bit more, i couldn't help but think it would be awesome to have Somebody Save Me From These Fools above my seat in a conference room... as well as the Please Do Not Copy, Create Something New! Blue Ant Studio has created yet another adorable poster for designer chair lovers... can you imagine if you went to the optometrist and they made you tell them which chairs you saw up to the tiniest ones to test your eyes (and chair knowledge)? Or what if it was part of an entry exam to design school??? Anyhow, loving this poster, check out the larger image after the jump!

The Helping Hounds of Hell. What it actually is aside, the poster for this exhibit caught my eye when i was checking out Evasee, and i love it! The simplicity of the curves, characters, three colors, and the typography are just too fun. See the full poster/flyer after the jump. Now as for what it is... The Helping Hounds of Hell are two "exciting exhibitions of handmade skateboard art" in Berlin!
