Designed By Apple In California

DBA00.jpg

It’s been a very Apple filled 2 days. Macbook pro arrived last night, Designed By Apple In California today. My macbook air has been long overdue for an update, but waiting for the new macbook pros has taken far longer than most rumors the last year! So, while many are complaining, i’m actually kind of loving the new macbook pro. Sure, the keyboard and mouse will take a little getting used to (and as far as loudness while typing, it doesn’t bother Shawn much compared to the noise when my nails would clink on the old one!) - and the touch bar is actually kind of fun - as for USB-C dongles, sure its a smidge more work, but i’m finding i don’t need them THAT much (other than for photos) - basically i’ve been ready for some newness, and i’m ready to adapt my workflow a bit to try it out… but not ready to jump to having a windows machine be my primary.

Anyhow - love when their shipping arrives a day early and surprises you! And while playing with the new machine, i was reading about the Designed By Apple In California coffee table books - a compendium of beautiful imagery of apple products from 1998-2015 as photographed by the amazing Andrew Zuckerman (behind Creature, Bird, Flower, and more). It’s a pricey coffee table book that comes in small (10.20” x 12.75”) and large (13” x 16.25”), and i can’t imagine a designer who wouldn’t welcome it into their design library. It’s rather over packaged, but unlike coffee table books from amazon, there’s no way it will get dented or dinged en route. And flipping through it, it’s stunning - and full of designer nostalgia. So much tech i’ve used from high school through the last decade of NOTCOT is in there. I’m tempted to scribble in the dates of the various machines i’ve owned that are no longer with me, just to remember all the tools that have helped get me where i am today when i look back on it all in a few decades. It’s a beautiful tribute to Steve Jobs and the stunning designs of Apple in its prime.

Take a look at the unboxing on the next page.

Illuminature by Carnovsky

illum0.jpg

Holiday shopping yet? Need a present for kids… who like animals? Consider it done. Illuminature - the new book from our friends Carnovsky - is perfect! Also pretty awesome for animal/art loving adults (like me!) It’s a nice big hardcover book (11.4 x 0.5 x 13.8 inches) that makes a nice sized gift, only think i might add are some extra colored glasses if there are a few kids around!

I’ve been enamored by the work of Carnovsky (Silvia Quintanilla and Francesco Rugi) for years! (Full disclosure/added bonus, we all went to grad school in Milan together!) Their RGB project has mesmerized… from award winning wallpapers to huge wall stickers (one of which is still on my ceiling) to scarves and more… their beautifully layered imagery hides so many layers in plain sight - until you filter it with a red, blue, or green lens.

In their new book, Illuminature, you get all the beauty of their previous works, with an educational twist. They take you through 10 destinations around the world, each one examined in three layouts. First they tell you about the destination, then you can peruse the scene at the Observation Deck, and finally a guide to all the species you’ve seen.

illum16.gif

Each lens takes you into a different layer of the destination. Red shows you the daytime creatures, Green shows you plant life, and blue shows you the nocturnal and crepuscular creatures lurking in the darkness! The book will take you everywhere from the Congo Rain Forest to the Simpson Desert, through the Ganges River Basin and down into the Apo Reef, explore Loch Lomond, the Redwood Forests, and beyond! Take a peek into more details of Illuminature on the next page!

Vanimals of Jonas Claesson

claesson.jpg

On happy deep dives into the internet, i just fell into the surfing animal illustrated world of Jonas Claesson. It all started with the Surfing Animals A-Z Book and the fun interview in Surfer Magazine… i saw the book in a store and was confused how this adorable kids picture book was $39 (turns out it was a kickstarter and is printed in small batches) As i explored the story of the book, i ended up on Jonas’ website… and promptly got smitten with his Vanimals! So many creature/adventure mobile combos - often topped with every possible variation of roof top tents! I wonder what he’d dream up our NOTFZJ80 to merge with? A yeti? A polar bear? A wooly mammoth? Bucky?

Check out some of his amazing pieces and work on the next page and also check out @Jonas_Draws for more inspiration.

Brendan Monroe (+ Expedition) Field Notes

fn0.jpg

I have been far to obsessed and giddy about Brendan Monroe’s black and white 3D looking landscapes - they are magical as huge murals, mesmerizing online… and when i saw the limited edition 2015 XOXOfest Field Notes with his work on the covers, i couldn’t resist! For less than 10$, you get three amazing little pieces… and i love them all so much, after writing this post i’m off to find the staple remover so i can frame them up!

While ordering that set, i also gave in to the waterproof Expedition Edition too! How can you resist the ” hi-visibility “Antarctic Survey Orange” front cover and “Polar Night Black” back cover, with a subtle varnish effect featuring a topographic map of Antarctica.” And who doesn’t need a notebook made of Yupo Synthetic paper which is water- and tear-proof paper extruded from polypropylene pellets in Chesapeake, Virginia. So perfect for NOTFZJ adventures! And they even threw in their signature Clic Pen and the Field Notes Band of Rubber fits perfectly around a single notebook. So fun! See al the details up close on the next page…

Grids & Guides Notebook

grids1.jpg On fun things that recently arrived - the Grids & Guides Notebook in Red has been growing on me. While i’m still a blank, white paper kind of person… the variety of 8 grids are mesmerizingly fun, make for great backgrounds for pictures, and definitely make it hard not to doodle from point to point - even on the cloth cover! There are also dividing pages filled with information from conversion tables and knots, to time zones, perspectives, and beyond! See inside and more details on the next page.

An evening of fruit salad and jelly, taken in through kaleidoscopic glasses and hosted in a masonic temple, within a hotel, in the heart of the City of London. The festivities were all to celebrate the launch of Bompas & Parr’s latest book, Tutti Frutti with Bompas and Parr and friends! A self-published, collaborative piece, the new book features architectural pineapples, the spaces of banana control, how blue became the international colour for raspberries and a luxurious host of fruity recipes from a host of characters including Sam Jacob of FAT, Alexis Gauthier, Martin Parr, Justin Piers Gellatly of St John, Joana Vasconcelos, Inventory Studio and more. Feasting with Bompas & Parr

feasting.jpg Here’s the latest from our resident zoologist and London based editor, Justine Aw.

Last night we attended a “Rumble in the Jungle” at the Barbican Centre, a celebration to mark the launch of Feasting with Bompas & Parr, the brand new cookbook from the dynamic duo of jellymongers Sam Bompas and Harry Parr, which follows their successful Cocktails and Jelly. Of course, to take it even further than the last - this cookbook plays music when you open it! (See the video on the next page… )

The celebrations included a steaming cauldron of tropical Guinness punch, a Ziggurat of Flavour, an array of exotic cocktails and some incredible botanicals such as the super shiny Pollia Condensata Berry and Sechuan button, which give an almost electrical sensation! An unbelievable feast for all senses for sure - take a look at all of the fun and more on the next page!

More Than Human by Tim Flach

book.jpg The latest from London-based editor and resident zoologist, Justine Aw.

The latest book from Tim Flach has the loaded title “More Than Human” and is based on the artist’s photo series that explores the relationship between humans and animals. The book is a beautiful collection of hundreds of stunning images of a wide range of incredible creatures. In addition to the book, Flach’s ‘More Than Human’ series will also be the basis of a new show at the Osborne Samuel gallery this December and we were invited to his East London studio for a launch to celebrate the new book!

I actually discovered this amazing project through my work at the aquarium at the Horniman Museum & Gardens in London, as some of the aquarium’s jellyfish feature in the series! Here are a few photos of the photographer at work behind the scenes at the Horniman aquarium (and the stunning images he captured!). More highlights from the launch, images from the book and behind the scenes photos on the next page!

The shoot sounds like an incredible experience, bringing snakes, bats and other creatures to Flach’s Shoreditch studio as well as shooting on location at nearby sites like the Horniman as well as a wide range of locations internationally. The resulting photo series captures the beauty and individuality of its subjects and draws your eye into the beauty in the detail and structure of the individual. More highlights from the launch and photo series on the next page!

Letter Work & Number Work: Montessori Books

montessori1.jpg It’s no secret that Justine and I both grew up Montessori kids and it’s stuck with us. In fact, i’m sure the design aesthetic apparent in so many of the gorgeous, glossy woody learning tools was an early influence on us. I’ll never forget learning my letters and numbers on the sand paper tiles where you run your finger along the sand paper to learn the shapes and how to write them…

Well, Bobby and June George, founders of the Baan Dek Montessori School in Sioux Falls, SD have been actively taking Maria Montessori’s philosophies and principles into the next generation with their beautiful, intuitive Montessorium iPad apps! With Intro to Math, Intro to Letters, Intro to Geography, and Alpha Writer they have been off to an amazing start… and have just released two board books: Letter Work and Number Work. While mainstream tablets haven’t evolved to let you feel textures quite yet… these board books bring back the sand paper letters of my childhood into a new format. On the cover as well as inside the books you can trace the sand paper textured letters and numbers! You learn the sounds and shapes before learning what they are called… and beautiful illustrations by Alyssa Nassner accompany them. Beyond the nostalgia ~ these are definitely going on my go to list of presents for little ones! Take a peek inside the books on the next page!

Emel Kurhan Loves Istanbul & Paris by Jotun

jotun0.jpg In Istanbul all week, and while we’re here for one of my dearest friend’s wedding ~ amongst the festivities, it has been hard to figure out what to do and where to go to really get to know Istanbul! Surely there are the usual monuments, museums, bazaars and other must see spots that you find in the touristy guides… then there are the high end luxury shopping sections with brands you can probably find in any major city… and even the Wallpaper guide had a bunch of the same old stuff… but finding resources to share the fun, unexpected in betweens has been surprisingly tough! Even chatting with local friends of the bride, it’s not always easy for people to step back and help direct you to the uniquely different little shops, galleries and spots that they may take for granted…

Thanks to twitter and the internet in general making travel and exploration a smaller world than ever ~ i got the sweetest tweet from the folks at Jotun the other day, which lead to a magical little package arriving on the hotel room bed hours later! Artist, Emel Kurhan, has created a set of guide books (Emel Loves Istanbul and Emel Loves Paris!) that feel like a scrapbook of favorite spots (and why they are loved, which turn to take/door to open for secret spots, etc) leading you into a whole over side of Istanbul! “The 2 Guides are for sale together the price for 2 books is 40TL, the money will be donated to different animal shelters, they come with a ribbon(each has a different color), only 2000 books has been printed and has been numbered by myself!” she says on her site.

So while i still may not get a taste of all facets of Istanbul in this week ~ we’ve done a few cliche tourist things, attended a stunning wedding on the edge of the Bosphorus (and ended up on a boat on it till 4am) with our hand carried NOTlabs photobooth guestbook setup, hidden out at the House Hotel Galatasaray… regardless of what the remaining 3 days hold, this adorable little book is definitely helping fill in more of the blanks! Take a peek inside it as well as a cute video teaser for them on the next page!

Inside Lee Clow's Beard: the book.

leeclowsbeard0.jpg There’s something magical going on over at TBWA\Chiat\Day in LA ~ I’ve been following @LeeClowsBeard on twitter for years now… endless amusement, for a while it was unclear if it may be the advertising legend Lee himself… then word spread it was another “fake” twitter account… the type that people stop caring is fake because its so well written and amusing. But you always wonder who is behind this stuff, and whether their “inspiration” approves. Well, in the case of Copywriter, Jason Fox, in Dallas,TX… while he managed to last about a year before asking if Lee knew about this twitter, and whether he approved, it seems to have worked out like a dream. Lee not only approved, but now there is a BOOK and an iOS APP!

Here’s a look at Jason Fox’s digital reveal today ~ and it was amazing to get to join the team at TBWA\Chiat\Day LA for the launch of Let There Be Dragons (TBWA\Chiat\Day’s new content creation offshoot who is also responsible for the book!) as well as the @LeeClowsBeard Book! Take a peek on the next page to see the festivities (including real life Lee Clow with 2D Lee Clow and @LeeClowsBeard) and a peek inside the book!

Cocktails with Bompas & Parr

cocktailsbp.jpg Fresh in from our London editor Justine Aw.

Following on from their successful book on jelly, jellymongering duo Bompas & Parr have launched a new book on cocktails, available for pre-order here.

The launch was celebrated with a party at their studio/lab near Borough. With ‘Cocktails, Snakes and Ether’ on the invite, I couldn’t resist checking things out and taking a peek inside the studio where all the magic happens! As Sam promised, there was indeed a medieval castle (complete with separate tower for the saxophonist, an abundance of cocktails from the new book served in an assortment of glasses, teacups and jam jars as well as a wide range of curiosities from Hendrick’s (penny farthings, scrimshaw and more!). It was also great to see some props from previous events we’ve attended and a glimpse into future projects (delectable elderflower/chili candy pills!). As always with Bompas & Parr, there were surprises everywhere, even in the bathroom, which was transformed a glitter snake pit/privy! More photos on the next page!

By sheer luck and an unreliable sense of direction, I discovered Nobrow on Great Eastern Street, in East London. What a gem! Nobrow is part shop, part studio and part gallery. The folks at Nobrow run both a small press of beautifully tactile illustrated books as well as a screenprinting studio. Proust Questionnaire ~ Assouline Brown Ed.

proust1.jpg The latest edition of Assouline’s Proust Questionnaire is beautiful ~ leather bound and printed on vellum paper with silver foil edges. The filled questionnaire on the cover in gold is a nice touch, and it would look great on any bookshelf. This classic interview question list is quite the personality test ~ Perhaps the best detail is the inclusion of blank questionnaires you can have friends fill out… or turn it in to your new guestbook and really get to know more about who you have in your house… take a peek inside on the next page

Stillhouse Moonshine: The Book

moonshine1.jpg Does it get more awesome than pulling two large volumes of old books off the shelf, only to find a bottle of moonshine hidden within? Well, actually it does when Stillhouse Moonshine customize and age the book such that all the details pull you in even further… from the 500 numbered editions, to the cover and first few pages having actual info about the story of Moonshine, nothing is out of place. In fact this beautiful packaging has me tempted to start an ACTUAL library bar… a gorgeous shelf of old books with wondrous libations tucked away in each volume. If I could be any sort of artist, I would want to be an illustrator. There’s something just awesome about the medium. Carte Blanche 007/Bentley Edition

bentley0070.jpg Spy novels + fun cars + limited edition books = gorgeous book design from 007 and Bentley for the latest James Bond book, Carte Blache. There is a die-cut bullet hole that pierces each book - inside each copy you find a single polished bullet with a distinct number. (I wonder if any other secret information is hidden in or on the bullet!)

As for the design - “The Special Edition is designed by Brett Boydell. In his ten years at Bentley, Brett has been involved in the interior design of the Bentley Azure, Brooklands and, most recently, the Continental Supersports. He also manages the Bentley Branded Goods studio, where all Bentley-associated products are created.” Additionally, the book is in a metal box shaped into outline of the new Continental GT. The look of this sleek abstracted sculpture reminds me a lot of the Infiniti Essence and Mercedes Rising Car sculptures. Take a peek at the sketches and renders of the 007 and Bentley Carte Blanche Special Edition on the next page.

Adding Passport Pages

passport0.jpg It’s back! I felt so free again this morning when my passport came back. There’s something about not having a passport on hand that feels like being trapped… albeit trapped in a HUGE country. On fun firsts, i finally reached the point where i had to add passport pages. One of the silly things i have been curious about since i was a kid, it now looks a bit frankensteined with completely different pages sewn and taped into the center! So, of course i had to take some pics to share the details of how it turned out! Take a peek on the next page… they even had some fun with the quotes and graphics!
