Becca ~ aka Rebecca Midwood- 03.07.11
Becca! From art school roots, to street art, to gallery shows, more street art, to teaching, and back? I love the stylistic/contextual juxtapositions and versatility of her work and experiences! They are very ~ Dick & Jane meet pin ups meet fashion illustrations… in gorgeously refreshing colors… pasted up around the city! I rediscovered her this weekend when popping by the new Street Art Pop Up Store/Gallery… started by Z (who, like many, is part of the Obey Giant family), focusing on creating a space to showcase and sell the works of established street artists. Amongst the work the day after the opening, there was a stack of amazing prints/posters/originals… and i fell in love with a Becca print. No surprise, i suppose, since i even posted the show it came from a show featured on NOTCOT.org ages ago (but i forgot! until i looked it up at home!)… Anyhow, Becca has some amazing work, take a peek at the pics and video on the next page!
Saturday, stumbled into the new Street Art Pop Up Store/Gallery…
Sadly, i’d missed the opening the night before ~ but the tiny Echo Park space was covered in these clusters of framed stickers/etc of established street artists… And in the center Z had quite the stack of prints/posters/originals and more… years of his personal collection and contributions from various artists themselves… in complete awe, we went through the stack, and i couldn’t help but pick up the following:
A little internet hunting shows its from Becca’s show in 2009 at White Wall SF ~ this “Ballerina” print is one of 69, signed and numbered on archival Coventry rag.
Super fun ~ you can even see her working on them in this Juxtapoz video that profiles her!
Here are some favorites ~ pics from the always amazing Unurth
… wandering around LA you might happen across a few of these!
Becca traces all her images from sewing patterns and childrens books right ? BLAAh.
