Light launched the L16 Camera today - a “multi-aperture computational camera that packs DSLR quality and capability into a device that fits in your pocket.” I had the opportunity to get up close with the prototype a few weeks back, and peek at what is actually INSIDE this fascinating camera. The potential is awesome, but i’m definitely curiously skeptical about the “computational camera” aspect. Basically this camera is a collection of 16 cameras in one - all simultaneously shooting an image at multiple focal lengths then fusing the resulting images together for a single image (up to 52 megapixels) which means you have all the data to manipulate the depth of field, exposure, and more after the fact. What Light L16 promises may remind you a bit of Lytro, but what makes it immensely more intriguing to me is the form factor and peeking INSIDE of it! The 16 cameras are supposed to be exceptional for low light and give you the equivalent of 35-150mm true optical zoom.

Aesthetically it resembles something between a large touch screen cellphone and a bluetooth speaker/radio… with 16 eyes staring at you from the glossy face! The size is quite a bit larger than most big screen filled phones. Trading in my DSLR for this form would definitely be quite the adjustment… so the real trick will be seeing not only how it shoots, but how their software works into photographers work flows. To make the most of the Light L16, it’s all about taking advantage of the post processing that is possible in their proprietary file type that houses the immense amount of data captured with each press of the shutter. Of course for quick manipulations or exports you will also be able to send files like jpgs to your phone or laptop for quick sharing. The potential is huge, and i’m definitely excited! Chatting with the Light L16 team, future possibilities were easy to imagine - putting this technology into cars, cellphones, and beyond! The future of the technology side is a no brainer - the user experience of shooting with it, processing/developing images with it, and having it nestle its way into my workflow i’m dying to find out.

Jollypop! These beautiful, natural lollipops by March have such lovely branding and packaging, and look deliciously designed. When flipping through Justine’s pictures, i stopped immediately at these and had to know more. Not only are they playful to look at - but their booth had them displayed on sound dampening pyramid foam!

Who is March? “MARCH is product invention studio based in Vilnius, Lithuania.We like new materials and technologies. We like good design. And we like good concept even better.” Martynas Kazimierenas and Egle Opeikiene definitely sound like our kind of people. I love that they go on to say “MARCH is anti-designerism. Most new designer products are unnecessary in our overproduced world. Besides, every new production have impact to the environment. New products have to be better in their concept, not just appearance. MARCH is new concept + new technology + new material = new goodness.” We need more designers who think like this.

Ok - but back to those Jollypops that we found at Tent London 2015… double sided cherry lollipop! And they are all handmade. see all their loveliness on the next page!

One of the new highlights of this year’s London Design Festival is Multiplex at the Old Selfridges Hotel, a fun pop-up “immersive, multi-sensory department store” from Tom Dixon and Wallpaper. The entrance can be found just behind the Selfridges food hall. You can’t miss his signature lights through out the space! The pop-up will be up even after LDF finishes; it is set to close up shop on the 15th of October. Take a peek inside the Multiplex on the next page!

Scanning through Justine’s photos coming in - KIWIS!!! These lovely, faceted, geometric porcelain figurines are Agnieszka Tomalczyk’s KIWI project. Designed for Ćmielów Design Studio, “the project was developed in several stages, including: paper use, plaster and 3D printing. The final figures were created in porcelain, which then was hand-painted and glazed.” It even won 1st place in the 2014 Młodzi na Start! competition by ELLE Decor Poland. On fun eye grabbing booths at 100% Design London, you couldn’t miss the inflatable booth of Pigro Felice - which is Italian for “Lazy Happy” - a perfect fit! Especially when you see their incredible huge inflatable seal… and mini inflatable seals… and fun seal logo! They have everything from beachwear and towels to Modul’Air, which is an interesting series of modular inflatable loungers that can be shifted from chairs and couches to floating daybeds, giant rafts, and more. Knitting has definitely been making a trendy comeback as of late… from knitting covered tree/street objects graffiti, to super chunky knit rugs, hipster knitting magazines and more… now you can even get chunky knit plastic - KNIT by Curver! A collection of useful products, from baskets and bags to pet homes, poufs, and more, which all utilize a method of deep-texture injection to apply a 3D knitted look to plastic. Their site explains that, “The innovation of the deep-texture injection method has been developed after the success of the rattan-look series, which upon its introduction five years ago, established the emotional plastic category by applying a woven look to outdoor furniture.”

Their unmissable designjunction installation in collaboration with FranklinTill spans the 5 story staircase as well as the press room, and is a colorful showcase of the KNIT by Curver collection. Take a look at the details on the next page!

On adorable emails to wake up to… a funky collection of Eames Elephants from the designjunction presents ‘A Child’s Dream’ in partnership with vitra! “A herd of customised elephants have been painted, patterned, and accessorised by 21 world-renowned designers and architects who have added their personal touch to the iconic Eames Elephants - kindly donated by Vitra. The unique designs will appear as an installation at designjunction2015 entitled A Child’s Dream - to raise funds and awareness for Teddy’s Wish charity. Currently for NOTlabs… i’m also researching SWINGS!!! I love swings - remember my skateboard swing from 2010? I suppose i shouldn’t be surprised how many i’ve accumulated and watched over the last 10 years on NOTCOT.org, but still - WOW! Swing inspiration overload? Nah… can’t get enough swings! From classic simple swings, to light up swings, to interactive (lights! music! and more…) swings… to crazy materials, locations, and shapes… my favorite 60 from NOTCOT.org are on the next page for us to refer to while brainstorming. I’m sure more will be found/added along the way as well… go check it out and feel free to jump in and share more ideas with us.

NOTCOT.com has always been a peek into my real life and what excites me at the moment. Lately the focus has been on NOTlabs (our real life studio side!) - and while we have fun experimenting, designing, testing, and making things… not all of it has been quite feature/making-of ready. Unable to shake my obsessive internet/real world search/shopaholic side - naturally every idea and project leads me down many a rabbit hole filled with research and inspiration as i think through things. So thus begins “RESEARCH” posts! Since i need a place to put them anyways, why not here? These may grow and get re-edited over time like my ever-evolving inspiration board - so feel free to suggest more links and objects and images that may help! We’re all in this together? And you’ll definitely be the first to see what the inspiration fuels us to design!

First up… i’m currently researching stacking vessels and totem pole type looks. Just curious what types of desktop size objects exist, or interesting details on ways things can fit together or be filled… so see what i’ve been finding via NOTCOT.org combined with more i’m hunting down on the next page.

While i’m still a blank, white paper kind of person… the variety of 8 grids are mesmerizingly fun, make for great backgrounds for pictures, and definitely make it hard not to doodle from point to point - even on the cloth cover!
