Announcing Unison

unisonhome.jpg
Welcome to September, where does the time go… to kick in this new month, and the unfortunate beginning of the end of summer, new tags for Gallery NOTCOT! This time we are proud to present the new collection by Unison, a new up and comer that recently launched at ICFF in spring… but don’t be fooled, gorgeous pieces like these don’t come easily - from Chicago, this husband and wife team has quite a reputation in the design world, and you’ve probably seen their work before and just not realized it! Robert Segal + Alicia Rosauer have Rhode Island School of Design degrees in photography and textiles, lived in Finland working for Marimekko for 4 years, and have designed for Crate and Barrel and Chiasso (owned by Segal’s father and brother respectively). And to top it all off, they are high school sweethearts ~ and share my passion for vibrant minimalist design. I love how their line is brightening up NOTCOT today, so take a look and keep an eye out for Unison ~ it has already been popping up on Daily Candy and d*s covered them as well!

Fumi Watanabe

fumiwatanabe.jpg
While on my woody art kick - had to share these new works by Fumi Watanabe over at Office (love their logo, must go check it out). Gorgeous pieces ~ can’t stop staring at them. Vaguely remind me of Audrey Kawasaki’s work. via ultrapdx.

Switch Rings

switchring.jpg
43 highlighted these new Switchrings at .org, that she just got, and the idea was far too cute - and when i went to explore further fell for their packaging and branding. They seem to function like the capsule toys (wouldn’t they be perfect in capsules?) - affordable playful colorful rings with swapable bits, and you have no control of the colors you get. They even have some with patterns - everything from skulls and flowers to crystals and bugs.

NOTCOT.org #014

org014.jpg
Wow, another week has passed already, and we’re nearing the end of summer?!?!?! How did this happen? And can you believe we have over 1200 images and links of design goodness on .org? I get lost there regularly just browsing through old pages and all the amazing things you guys find.

Colin does this week’s round-up, saying “This week I’m feeling eclectic so for your visual pleasure some abandoned ufo houses, greenery for the indoors, ridiculous hand drawn typography, a carpet tanker for your electrical needs, and some unexpected art amid chaos.”

Personal DNA

personaldna.jpg
Personal DNA - another psych profiling online quiz - but glossy and pretty - and possibly more thought out than most as far as taking into account the UI as well as the questions… It makes great use of what the web has to offer… most intriguing to me is the beaker of green goo (how cliche science lab?) that you need to empty into the various sliders accordingly. It certainly changes how you visualize the choices you make… Anyhow, give it a go - feel free to post what you are, always curious who reads this. Not sure if i love their output (the dna strip and there is a square that is kind of Mondrian meets TV Static) - or that their logo looks like it might be flipping me off… but the styling of this test is worth a peek. Oh, and i’m an Advocating Creator in their books.

Maandag Meubels

maandag.jpg
A little late on the get go today - but just found this table in my inbox, and while i think we have probably all seen it around, love the way its put together. Something so clean and crisp about the way the legs are fused to the top. by Maandag Meubels of Netherlands.

Sei

seiwater.jpg
SEI Water - from New York. The unique gimmick? The packaging. Correct me if i’m wrong, but is it not just a flask shape? Modeled after those in liquor stores?

WetPot

wetpot.jpg
“Allow your plants to take care of themselves” - it sounds so freeing the way WetPot describes it, and is probably exactly what most of us need for extended vacations… it is a smart elegant solution, and i love that the clarity of the glass exterior lets you see how much your plant may be dehydrating soon. While i love it in the pics and new - my one question would be, will algae grow there? You know how it happens in fish tanks - and your plants will need sun… But in concept, its great, and even something that could be built in to normal looking pots, with a thin old styled thermometer strip to check water levels through. Cross Stitch It

crossskull.jpg
Checking out new German/Spanish T site, SELEKKT, i found German Silberfischer that makes these incredible cross stitch pins (tvs! skulls that glow in the dark! hearts in rectangular speech bubbles!) Also loving their kids line of tees and bibs - not sure how baby food and stains wash out of cross stitch, but makes for a cute gift. And the error hat was just worth throwing in as well.

Brushes?

flowerbrushes.jpg
Lola posted this as .org #1155, and these incredible photoshop brushes have been stuck in our heads (well Shade Elaine and i are obsessing slightly over them) for a bit now, so it seemed worth sharing over here if even one of you hasn’t been checking in on the wealth of design drool worthy picks popping up over there. DesignFruit is the place for Jason Gaylor’s Random Stuff - and there are more brushes and graffiti ones even to go play with.

Glam War

glamwar.jpg
When those late night ads for Bling It On meet your Bazooka, you know you’re in trouble. Let’s hope we don’t reach a point where grabbing my fire hydrant red swarovski grenade is as essential as my keys when leaving the house. None the less - this project has been making its way around the design sites this week, and apparently its from 2001… HOARD Magazine’s layout on Antonio Riello’s “Ladies Weapons” collection - where every piece is named after a significant woman in his life. I don’t know exactly how i’d interpret that if i were one of them. Carmella intrigues me the most - i wonder what she must have been like to inspire that piece.

Also sorry i was slow today. Went sailing yesterday - and had this close call with another boat - and on a gybe where we both made it, but SO near each other… THEIR boom went crack against my skull pretty hard, so yesterday was pretty much lost to working, and today was busy as well as a little of a throbbing haze.

Paula Scher

Dear Clients, Yes. Somedays the perfect logo/concept/design really does come to us in 30 seconds. Don’t complain if you love it. You’re not just buying the process, have a little faith in your designers.

To the designers, Trust your instincts.I love this video Shade Elaine just sent me interviewing Paula Scher. Go watch it. Get inspired. Make great work. Also great article here.

Heartea

Heartea.jpg
Feeling kind of sweet this Saturday afternoon, and while we are working on developing .org further, stumbled upon this great find that i have been meaning to post for some time here. Keith + Lottie’s Sweetheart Teacups. Packaged in a gorgeous giftbox, can you think of a better engagement present? There’s something so nice about how the tea in the cup forms such a subtle heart shape, although as you drink it the heart gets smaller, interpret that as you will… .org #895

Inka Titanium Review

inkamain.jpg
Inka Special Edition Titanium Pen review! First impressions? Love it. Anything that i can sit here and not stop playing with for a good hour or so while working must have something going for it. Silly details that grabbed me first - the design, its sleek yet rugged - it feels like quality in your hands, and it is everything i always wished the space pens were. (those were far to slippery and shiny feeling)… Granted i also have a soft spot for titanium and carbon fiber. Also it looks a little like a titanium/carbonfiber cig hanging from my keychain… love that it doesn’t scream PEN.

Inka was founded by Greg Adelman, an engineer/entrepreneur with a good number of years working military and oceanographic industries designing and developing instrumentation and equipment… so is it any wonder that when he failed to find a suitable pen that could withstand the harsh marine environment he developed the concept for the Inka Pen? (I love product design which emerges from a genuine need, not simply an idea to fill an assumed niche.) Packaging + pictures + more thoughts below.
