COATT Morse Code Jewelry

morse1.jpg Another Dwell On Design discovery ~ love the packaging of COATT’s Morse Code Jewelry. While a little cryptic to translate on the fly (it’s hard to tell where one letter ends and the next begins!) ~ the minimal dot and dash beads in gold fill, gold, or silver on silk cord make for lovely necklaces and bracelets which are a beautifully simple gift for any occasion. And the use of Wasara disposable paper plates/etc as displays are a brilliant idea! See it all on the next page!

LED Glühbirne Nature Bulb

bulb1.jpg I fell in love with these LED Glühbirne Nature Bulbs at Dwell On Design today. Designed by Process, they were spotted in silver painted wood crates over at the Design Prize Switzerland booth. “The LED NATURE BULB combines the most up-to-date energy-efficient lighting technology with the form of the classic bulb. The ventilation opening in the centre of the luminous body carries a worldwide patent, and lends the product an independent and iconic character. Its 360 degree dispensation of light has also been patented and guarantees ideal functionality. The balanced form of the lighting unit means that it can also be used without a lampshade and will fit harmoniously into any kind of interior. Other advantages are the extremely long life of the bulb, its efficient use of electricity (just 4.5W) and the non-toxicity of the materials.” They are stunning in person! See more pictures as well as a pic of what’s inside it on the next page!

Dom Pèrignon x David Lynch Launch

dommain.jpg Last night i ended up at Milk Studios in Hollywood for the unveiling or the latest David Lynch also created the whole experience of the evening… creating a fascinating series of spaces and experiences as each room opened up throughout the night. Starting with champagne on the steps as you enter… to gentlemen in top hats handing you chalk to sign your name on the wall… then passing through a mysteriously glowing foggy tunnel… to explore various dramatically lit dioramas of Dom bottles showing part of the process of how they came to the limited editions… while enjoying delicious molecular gastronomy from The Bazaar by José Andrés… and beyond to the reveal of the new bottles and performances by The Kills and Diplo! It was a spectacular night not to be forgotten… take a picture at the experience on the next page!

Dom Pèrignon Neon Inspiration

neon1.jpg These big glowing neon Dom Pèrignon insignia’s throughout last night’s event for the David Lynch x Dom Pèrignon launch were mesmerizing. Enough so that i took a bunch of pictures of them, even ending up leaning up on the wall behind them feeling the bass from The Kills shaking the structure while sipping rosè and looking through them… fun pics on the next page!

Chilis from seed to deliciousness

peppers.jpg This post is sponsored by Bing. Only Bing brings the best search and the best people from your favorite social networks, like Facebook and Twitter, together to help you spend less time searching and more time doing.  It’s amazing what you can do when your friends are part of your search.

The whole NOTCOT team scattered across the globe has somehow been on the gardening kick lately ~ perhaps its the gorgeous weather, a new found patience, or just a fascination with watching and tasting deliciousness grow out of nearly nothing! Above you can see my latest chili peppers starting to finally get their vibrant red color… They are definitely slow growing and not nearly as crazy fast as my cherry tomatoes or strawberries that seem to produce a bowl full every few days this summer! Have you tried growing your own? How are they doing? What types? Our Liqurious editor, Marcia Simmons shares what she’s been learning about the fun of chilis on the next page… and has even been trying to make her own hot sauces and sriracha!

Raphael Kim’s Rotifer Farm

rotimain.jpg The latest from London-based editor, Justine Aw as she checks out the press preview of Show RCA 2012. The show opens to the public on the 20th of June and closes on the 1st of July.

Love this project from Raphael Kim, a fellow former biologist, Kim’s project is not only a beautiful piece to look at, but also biologically fascinating! His Rotifer Farm is all about interactions between microbial communities and people. As Kim points out, we have few conscious interactions with this incredible diversity of creatures (the only time we even notice them is usually when you come down with a stomach bug!).

Rotifer Farm is a home designed to explore interactions between humans and this microscopic world of rotifers. Rotifers are a group of considerable scientific interest on account of their incredible hardiness as well as fascinating locomotion (via coronal cilia), parthenogenetic reproduction. However, they’re not a group we consciously interact with much outside of the lab. Kim’s Rotifer Farm takes the microbial communities outside of the lab creating an intermediate space between the world of research labs and our everyday lives, creating a more tangible experience.

The farm is organized in a number of different circuits with different developmental stages (including those pretty pink eggs) and comes with pipettes for moving your little rotifer friends from one section to the next. Raphael even went to spend a few months with a rotifer specialist in Okinawa, where he obtained some of these incredible images and videos of rotifers feeding and glowing.

Aleksandra Mirecka’s LAVA lemonade. For the show, Mirecka has turned a corner of the new Battersea campus’ into a fun little café where you can sip on homemade lemonade from handmade glasses with adorable straws! It’s a fun little space that’s playful and a pretty take on the childhood lemonade stand. Oh and did we mention the lemonade is delicious? More photos on the next page!

Emma Montague’s Mandibular Eyewear!

montague-RCA-2012-2971.jpg The latest from London-based editor, Justine Aw as she checks out the press preview of Show RCA 2012. The show opens to the public on the 20th of June and closes on the 1st of July.

As a natural history enthusiast who spends her spare time surrounded by skeletons, I was intrigued when I recognized cervid mandibles at the jewellery section of the Show RCA 2012. These incredible sunglasses are the work of Emma Montague of the Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, Metalwork & Jewellery department. Emma was inspired by the relationship between the shape of the jaw bone and sunglasses when she put her Ray Bans down beside a mandible (as you do!). The result are a beautiful series of sunglasses made from black horn, the jaw bones of deer and acetate. They are the byproduct of trophies and in the collection, Emma marries luxury and decay and the raw with the refined. As for the mandibles? They come from the deer culled by The British Deer Society. More photos of the series on the next page!

2012 Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé

rolls1.jpg Strangely fascinated by the images and video of the 2012 Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé… you pop open the trunk and you’re greeted by the teak flooring you’d expect on your yacht… which then pops open further to reveal a “comfortable picnic seat for two adults” as well as a mini fridge and a set of “full-sized hand-engraved glasses that were designed by the team at Rolls-Royce.”

As for the inspiration behind the design… “The latest expression of Phantom Drophead Coupé demonstrates a more relaxed and less formal side of Phantom. It displays a sociable character and its convivial interior evokes the feeling of being aboard an elegant motor yacht. Inspired by the J-class racing yachts of 1930s (known for their performance and use of natural materials) the result is a car that epitomises romantic, performance motoring.”

“The optional teak deck was inspired by classic racing yachts. Each deck is hand-made from 30 separate pieces of teak cut from the same tree for consistent grain. Grooves are precision-machined into the wood then hand-finished with black yacht builders’ caulk. This is followed by two sealing coats and a finishing coat of liquid wax to create the elegant tonneau cover for the soft-top when it is lowered.”

See more pictures of these fascinating details on the next page… and imagine the picnic you could have when cruising around…

Illustrations by Sophie Alice Wiltshire

illmug0.jpg The latest from London-based editor, Justine Aw as she checks out the press preview of Show RCA 2012. The show opens to the public on the 20th of June and closes on the 1st of July.

Another highlight from Show RCA 2012, is the work of ceramist and illustrator Sophie Alice Wiltshire. Wiltshire’s beautiful illustrations make gorgeous mugs and stunning tiles! Her illustrations are inspired by visits to the incredible spirit collections at the Natural History Museum, London (which are my favorite collection there too!). More photos of her beautiful natural history inspired pieces on the next page!
