Toy Me

newtoyme.jpgToy Me has some fun new pieces ~ from their newest collection the ones that grabbed me are the macho arm, robotino, and the sunglasses to hang your sunglasses from (at first they almost look like the tabs from soda cans)! The mini rayban wayfarers and even aviators are far too cute, definitely a fun add on gift if you're gifting sunglasses this holiday season. Close ups below... and if Toy Me seems familiar, maybe you're remember those sweet Hunting Trap bracelets and Tank Cufflinks!

Shane by Brooks Salzwedel

shane1.jpg
Ok, this is going to be a bit backwards, but i needed to share this product discovery from the A+R launch dinner before the dinner itself. I've long loved the deep resin works of Brooks Salzwedel from my discovery of his belt buckles back in sept of 06 to further exploration of his intriguing and mesmerizing larger resin "paintings" of sorts (and the smaller ones in found tins, etc) in august 07. Well as it turns out, Andy (the A of A+R) loved them as much as i did, and got in touch with Brooks who is also a Silverlaker, and the buckles did amazingly... and as the story goes Rose (the R of A+R) even helped Brooks get into the GenArt Fresh Faces this year, where his work was incredibly well received. So although A+R is stocked with so many things i love (it was like being in the NOTCOT store, if there were a NOTCOT store, it was incredible, but more on that later)... these teeny tiny new necklaces caught my eye. There was that moment of literal - OMG. Are those...?

And here you have it, the latest - in fact the FIRST - pieces of jewelry from Brooks Salzwedel, which Andy and Rose had *just* put out tonight... incredibly intricately cast metal woody pieces with the classic Salzwedel depth in resin. And in those teeny tiny logs, are even tinier little trees, which are truly the coolest things i may have ever seen (and i see a lot.) So if you feel so inclined, these may not make it into any store or website for a while, but you can contact A+R for more info... just please don't buy these specific little logs! I need to go back and beg them to let me buy them... once they figure out how much they are. Many more images below (please don't mind my super quick mid-party shots) - including one of the belts gorgeously displayed on logs in the storefront. And click to see more of Brooks Salzwedel's Buckles and Art.

Oakley Split Thump Review

newoakleymain.jpgOakley's line of wearable tech has evolved once again... and its certainly improving! If you recall, i reviewed their O ROKR and Thump 2 almost exactly a year ago, and i was pleasantly surprised when a white boxed beta of the Split Thump showed up today. They've really cleaned up the design quite a bit, and it is now possible to be far more 007 like with these... removable t-rex arm ear buds (with an adorable little classic oakley pouch for them, even with a divider in the middle to keep them from destroying each other) and the external buttons have been incorporated into the logo (which has been enlarged and aesthetically looks far better on the glasses)... and they are sounding better as well. Bottom line? These glasses can actually look like normal sporty sunglasses when you aren't listening to music, giving you the flexibility the others lacked. Anyhow, take a look below for the unboxing, close ups, and a some photo comparisons between the Thump 2 and the and the Split Thump.

Oh, and if any of you are thinking ~ but wait some of the big tech blogs hated it... i just reread all those posts, and they have been following their predecessors who all hated the concept to start with - and its so sad that some of those sounded like whiny poor techy ipod lovers who probably aren't huge fans of outdoor sports. But anyhow, i might be in a ranty mood... these are definitely making my potential gift list... although it says "coming soon", i've heard that these will definitely be shipping in time for xmas.

Folding Sunglasses

foldingtrend.jpgWe find weird trends pop up on NotCouture ~ or we notice certain types of pieces becoming more and more prevalent and then simply bubbling up in our consciousness.... first there were the Fingerless Gloves, and as the seasons progressed we just kept finding them everywhere! Lately the thing that keeps finding me are these folding sunglasses. I used to think that glasses that folded into strangely compacted slightly flattened cigar cases were reserved for reading glasses... but its been interesting to see that Rayban adapted their 1952 classic Wayfarers to be folding... Ralph Lauren has foldable wrap around sunglasses... and John Varvatos has the hybrid Transitional Readers - yes, folding reading glasses that automatically darken to become sunglasses. And they all have cute cases for these too... although they don't look all that guy pocket friendly, more purse friendly? Perhaps its for the wives to carry for them. Anyhow, unsure of whether this has been an ancient design trend and i'm just noticing, or if its make a strange comeback. I'm quietly tracking them on NotCouture, so feel free to add any nice ones you find as well.

Working Class Heroes

wchmain.jpgWorking Class Heroes ~ this Viennese duo, Monie & James ~ have me giddy over their gorgeously functional grey felt and brown leather combinations... from laptop wallets to passport cases, moleskine pouches to glasses cases. I mentioned these in a roundup where i had mentioned finding these on .org and ordering two laptop wallets! Well they arrived in LA while i've been in SF the last few weeks... and they were the first thing i headed for when i got home. First impression? Beautiful presentation, all hand tied with red/white ribbon, and the products are even nicer in person than online ~ and they were even nice enough to add one of their keyholders as well.

I purchased their Girls Only Laptop Wallet as well as the Laptop Wallet Tidy ~ and actually i ordered two simply because i couldn't decide if i wanted it to horizontal or vertical, and at such a reasonable 49$ pricetag ~ no reason not to get both for use in various bags. The three things about these that impress me most are... 1. no zippers! (i'm extremely particular about avoiding zippers in my laptop cases, because i had some macbooks get very sliced up on the sides from quick ins and outs... and also no velcro! so its silent) 2. the simplicity of the styles using a nice heavy "3mm grey german felt" combined with adorable graphic branding imprinted leather accents ~ as well nice cotton herringbone reinforcements 3. the genius of having laptop sleeves where you can easily PUSH the laptop out. Honestly, i've gone through MANY laptops, laptop sleeves, and laptop bags ~ and its been a long time since i've gotten excited about one... but these have surpassed my expectations in both form and function.

MANY pictures below, both from their site of their line, as well as some quick snapshots of mine when i just got home. Having these to play with may actually get me off my laptop a bit more since i need to close it to slip it into the laptop wallets!

Vivenne Westwood Saftey Pins

vivpins.jpgI can't remember if we were mildly obsessed with saftey pins before NotCouture, or if the safety pin naturally became our logo and then we kept noticing it everywhere. But regardless, saftey pins are truly popping up everywhere lately... i supposed it matches the whole psuedo-punk/glam trend with all the studded burberry, etc. But i was surprised to come across this new collection from Vivienne Westwood Hardcore Diamonds where she takes on safety pins and paperclips.

American Apparel Black Vinyl

amap.jpgLooks like American Apparel has started branching out on their bags... latest additions which nicely complement the nylon duffels (perfect lightweight gym/beach bags all summer, but not so great for screen printing... i tried a silver pirate bronto on my green one, its barely there anymore) ~ these bags now come in a sleek black vinyl. Perfect for fall/winter perhaps? Not sure how they feel in person ~ but intrigued by the images online... also doesn't vinyl tend to have a certain less than appealing scent often? Well they have a laptop bag, duffle, makeup bag and (shown below).

Niwaka Rings

image001.jpg
[NOTCOT Note: I'm so honored that Anna chose to share the beautiful packaging of her wedding rings with us. Again, congratulations to Anna and Sean on their wedding last month! I can't wait to see what else is going to be coming out of Sub-Studio this fall.]

As you might know, Sean and I got married in September. Sean bought my engagement ring from this amazing Japanese jeweler, Niwaka, and we loved the ring so much that we decided to get our wedding bands from them, too. Niwaka’s designs are (mostly) very simple and elegant, with clean lines and a twist on the traditional ring setting. Niwaka pays close attention to detail, and that extends to their packaging, as well. The rings sit in a two-piece, white ceramic box (it looks like a tooth in profile!), which comes packaged itself in a simple wooden box. A red ribbon ties the box together. So that the wooden box sits flat, two holes are cut into the bottom of two side faces to allow the ribbon to run concealed along the inside of the box. Niwaka has stores in Kyoto and New York. You can see more ring designs on their website.

Psycho Bunny

psychobunny.jpgWhile on the perfect ties for my guy hunt... while writing up that last bit on Prep & Pauper... i was discussing with a friend some of our favorite ties, and got reminded of Psycho Bunny... which of course had me hunting over at NotCouture to find it (#062!), and then i discovered NEW Psycho Bunny ties at Neiman Marcus! How NotCouture is that saftey pin one? I love their classic bunny skulls, but the safety pin tie is my new favorite tie of the moment. More pics below of the classic minis, and the striped.

Prep & Pauper

perpandpauper.jpgPrep & Pauper ~ As part of the super crafty philly trip (it seemed like an etsy-fest). One of the local designers we dined with was Nicolas Newbold who is part manny (yes, male nanny), construction worker, ex-PR NYer, kid who ran around in a lacoste polo with the collar popped while sporting vans and a skateboard... etc etc etc. You get the point. He also has an obsession with ties, from patterns to silk weights to thicknesses... so as a company that started with a name and no purpose, Prep & Pauper naturally became a tie line. Interesting random tidbits to note before jumping into the overdose of pictures below? He claims to lack the ability to draw, but has hand drawn and learned illustrator to master all of these doodles seen on the ties ~ sews each and every bag by hand, and tapes them shut just for you. AND? I have a sneak peak for you of his upcoming Wailer print. Also, for all of you who are big on ties, let me know what you think of his patterns compared to those like Vineyard Vines, J.McLaughlin, Hermes, etc... because the comparisons keep coming up, and pulling up some of those they do seem a tad similar.

Black Sheep & CAST

cast1.jpgNOTCOT Note: Here's another article from Anna Corpron of Sub-Studio!

Derrick Cruz of Black Sheep & Prodigal Sons and THECAST collaborated on a series of handmade accessories for their Spring/Summer 2008 collection. Picking up on Black Sheep & Prodigal Sons' love for "Dark and Uncommon Goods" and THECAST's edgy basics, the collaboration brings to mind a refined Wild West - accessories for the urban cowboy, perhaps. Shown above, the Cottonmouth is a solid metal snake bolo on a hand-screened gauze scarf.

Canon 40d and Red Monkey

camera.jpgMy camera situation has evolved quite a bit the last two months... first there was the addition of the 10-22mm lens to my ancient (2+ yr old) Digital Rebel. And with that i needed a better bag to carry it in (enter, Botkier Satchel), which was perfect running around Paris. But the day i got back, i couldn't resist and picked up the new Canon 40d, and that coupled with the 10-22 has been my baby i've been carrying everywhere. The reviews are just starting to roll in, but overall, i'm smitten. And as much as people seem to hate having to manual focus on live view (and there are some work arounds) ~ i'm just thrilled to be able to see it live at all! And the fact that you can zoom in so ridiculously close while in live view, actually makes the focusing far better than i could have ever done on my slr... combined with a 3" screen this is really fun for my "put camera on floor to shoot" tendencies - and it's SO much faster! And feels more solid than the newer rebels.

Anyhow, next phase of camera evolution... i need a good strap. My old camo neoprene one from high school is reaching the end of its lifespan (it used to be on my AE-1). So when i saw these Red Monkey straps at Acquire, i think it was love at first site. Rockstar strap for my camera? I can pick any leather i want? Distressed, dyed, painted... And these guys are the real deal (their press archives are full of rockstars who have been wearing their guitar straps, and their watches seem big with the celeb set too... very cool story behind them as well)!

db clay wallet review

claywallets1.jpgNew wallets and website from db clay! (Not to mention an exclusive 25% off discount b/c they love us! Code: notcot25 - i think you get 2 weeks, so hurry it up.) New wallets are made out of eco-friendly TOPE (their first batches were out of gaffer's tape)... which is "a synthetic fabric similar (in texture) to a vinyl canvas. However, Tope does not contain certain hazardous chemicals typically found in most vinyl-based products. In particular, Tope contains NO PVC, Tope is made from non-toxic raw materials (it causes no dioxin, heavy metal or phthalate pollution), Tope decomposes when buried, Tope is chlorine chemicals free and Tope is fabricated through a pollutant free process. Additionally, we have engineered a tremendously technical printing process whereby we print high resolution and full photographic images using environmentally friendly inks. To top it off, Tope is also vegan and animal free."

Ok well green innovation aside ~ they sent over two wallets and i've been playing with them a bit, and making guys test them out of course. It's a nice leather alternative, the subtle texturing on the two i liked is a nice touch ~ i'm in love with the black on black particularly. Ready to go as the perfect gift in its tissue paper lined boxes ~ and in case you're wondering, it doesn't at all feel like tape of any sort, in fact i'm quite impressed with how nice the quality feels, the only thing we're waiting to see is how it softens up to shape to your pockets, etc. Afterall, how a wallet wears over time is how it ends up gaining some character. My one complaint? If you frequent europe ~ don't bother trying to carrying anything over a 20 euro bill... the poor 50 euro bills stick out about a mm and were driving me absolutely crazy. Anyhow, more images below from every which angle!

Cleavage Cupcakes

cleavagecupcake.jpgBefore you judge this post too quickly ~ i have a reason for it! Just hear me out. We've learned a lot since launching NOTCOT.org and TasteSpotting and now NotCouture... and one of the unintentional (and oh so obvious now) things we've discovered are trends that pop up each week (as things go through waves of popularity, we start to see a lot of repeats)... and also people tend to click a LOT more if there is a hint of cleavage on a NOTCOT.org post (yes, i know, it's the internet, its a given)... what we didn't expect? Cupcakes have the same effect on TasteSpotting! People LOVE cupcakes, so it has been an inside joke for us that cupcakes are the culinary cleavage (as coined by Colin). So when i saw these Cleavage Cupcakes in the store today, i nearly burst out laughing. Check out some of their other fun products below.

p.s. we do NOT front posts based on how much cleavage or cupcakeness they have, if the editors love it, we post it.

Balmuda's X-Base

balmuda1.jpgThis heatwave in California needs to stop. It's seriously hot out ~ although gorgeous beach weather for sure... but one thing that is unnecessary is having my macbook pro function as a space heater in this weather while i work. Not sure about you, but nearly everyone i know and work with has a 15" macbook pro ~ and it is HOT, literally will burn your precious lap after an hour or so of serious working... which is where this overdue product review comes in.

So, i've had this Balmuda X-Base the last few weeks and we've all hovered around this gorgeous slab of aluminum with a giant heatsink, and really just weren't sure what to say about it exactly. But tonight i just realized, it is PERFECT for moments like this. It is far too hot to let my laptop overheat my room right now, and that heatsink works its magic the moment you set the laptop down on it. "X-Base is composed of parts machined from blocks of aluminum and stainless steel (except for the heat sink) bolted together." See more pictures and i'll continue my review below.

Dolce & Gabbana Corset

dgcorset.jpgDolce & Gabbana Metal Corset Belt. Wow. I just noticed this insane metal corset on the cover of Wired's Fashion Rocks supplement at Dan's house and snagged it. Curious to find out more, i found it at Bergdorf Goodman - it is $8,800 with the Metallic Lace Dress and $1,995 with the Black Chiffon Dress over at Neiman Marcus. But really check out the image below of JLo wearing it over a grey tank and p/leather pants? I think its hard not to stare at it ~ kind of over chromed medieval styling?

Fingerless gloves for Fall/Winter

fingerlessGloves_05.jpg
So while doing my usual daily online shopping/browsing (NotCouture is my excuse...), I can't help but notice some trends. Today fingerless gloves grabbed my attention because I came across like 10 different pairs. I don't think I've ever seen this many before in past seasons. Jean theorizes it's because of the proliferation of Blackberries and iPhones and whatnot, and it's very difficult to txt using regular gloves. I think it's perhaps for those fashiony types who need to keep their hands warm while going out for a smoke in the cold winters of NYC..? But I don't have an explanation for why I suddenly want a pair of these... I don't smoke and I don't have a Blackberry or iPhone! Pictured above (from left to right) are the Whitney arm warmers by Marc by Marc Jacobs, Dior Homme runway sleeves, and fingerless gloves by Generra.

Even more fingerless gloves after the jump!

Porsche Design Edition 1 Accessories

porschecase.jpgSo, i was just gushing about the incredibly designed Porsche Design Edition 1 Cayman below, and as much as i love the car, i was incredibly curious what that accessories case is like... Just got this high res image from Porsche of the contents of that case. Close ups below. Although not as 007 as i'd imagined when you opened the case... those are some impressive black designer accessories in a zip leather briefcase... interesting how even your key comes in the case. Can't you just imagine a man in a dark suit and those dark glasses walking up and handing you this case as he nods his head towards the car parked across the street as he strolls away? Ok maybe now i'm just dreaming about great ways to have your Porsche Design Edition delivered to you.

Scoodie

scoodiecom.jpg
Scarf+Hoodie+(pocket & fun fabrics)+Kasil = SCOODIE! Ok, stop giggling, its actually pretty comfy. Especially as it gets chilly and windy in this so called summer SF weather, its a fun idea. And a nice touch with the ipod (or credit cards/id or cash, or whatever little things you want to stash in a place where few are likely to look) pocket, with button and kasil logo. So on unique new hybrid fashion pieces... here's one i had to point out -- and i was skeptical initially, but after having played with one a bit, its growing on me thanks to Matt of Plopculture - the Secret life of a Product Placement Surfer in LA - which is really one of my few basic template blogger sites that i read frequently (no offense, matt!), and yes my blog reading in tabs really is that superficial when it comes to design sites (why, why, why have an ugly design blog?). Anyhow, i digress, clearly this week has gotten to me a bit... more images below! And you can find the scoodie below over at Revolve Clothing... and its not just for girls.

Brooks Salzwedel

brook1.jpg
I stop and swoon at Brooks Salzwedel's belt buckles every now and then (seeing them over at Ron Herman just reminded me again), and i just rediscovered his art which i failed to post about previously. So here they are (more below) - and in the artist's own words, from NY Arts Magazine Interview: "With the use of transparencies, including vellums, acetates, tape and resin, I see my work in layers. I ask myself what images should be in the foreground, and what images should recede to the back. I want all my pieces to have an overwhelming feeling of depth. A good piece, for instance, will have faded fog in the background, but still show detail in both its foreground and background. Most of the time, a piece will be a surprise to me, once I pull the resin out of its mold. The layers change—some images will become dull, while some will become crisp—which helps me feel like I’m not working in some formulaic way. It’s all still an experiment and so creates accidents." See more of his buckles and work here.

Friday craving - glow in the dark white skull key cap. i|m active

imhairmain.jpg
i|m active: There are hair things and there are hair things... and there are hair things in great packaging... foil ziplocs! AND great labeling as well as an ActiveHold Technology TOUCH window! And seriously, how can you resist that. Well beyond the great packaging... this line of active hair accessories actually has a whole new kind of grip on the outside! It weaves two types of rubber strands on the surface of the bands for extra grip, as well as having no metal clasp (the connector actually looks a lot like heatshrink). I picked up the elastics, as well as the head wraps which look like giant elastics (instead of their other wide flat headbands) - in addition to their extra tension claw clip/elastic hybrid (more images below!). And i'm impressed, my buns and ponytails aren't going anywhere as much as i shake my head... nor are my bangs that tend to escape! What else is in the line? Barrettes and award winning shoelaces! all with the same grippy technology.

Now for the unexpected part - i|m active is by the makers of Industrie which produces high end salon tools... which are a business unit of Newell Rubbermaid. Yes, THAT rubbermaid... of tupperware, etc.

Puma Urban Mobility

pumaurbanmobility.jpg
Puma's Urban Mobility line... there's been much talk of the Urban Mobility Bike (folds up... i've included the collaborative short NSFW film PUMA and Ryan McGinley teamed up with the Serpentine Gallery on at the end of the post) as well as the limited edition Urban Mobility Bag (top left, whit bag with the wood bottom)... but i've heard little about the whole collection, OR the incredible website they've made around it (which is SO awesome, i need a separate post for it, coming next). So here are the products i'm in awe of currently... more or less everything integrating wood into the products: The roller is just incredibly sleek and gorgeous! The totes with the contrast of the wood paneling are just breath taking... and that wallet! OH, and the belt? It's airport friendly! No metal parts, so you can keep your pants up while you go through security! And that black sleeve for laptop accessories was just too pretty not to share as well. It actually strips the kernels off the cob and into a container that even helps you measure how much you have... and easy grips to hold on to as well.
