In addition to my growing porcelain fascination this ICFF, i have also been noticing a lot of Foosball Tables going more high design. During the Conran Shop's Rojo opening (incredible! Definitely worth how wet i got in the rain to get there)... i came across the bright red metal RS Barcelona RS #2 foosball table designed by Rafael Rodriguez... and then saw the white one downstairs in the shop... the silver one at ICFF... and the coat rack versions in both the Conran Shop and ICFF. Really what stands out about this one is the bright metal frames and the arms and expressions on the player! Their faces scream "pass it to me! pass it to me!" with that excited/alert look... and their arms make them look like they are always on the go... which is admittedly, even funnier on a coat rack. There is also a hilarious stumpy super-buff silver and black set of players on another table i found at the Conran Shop that you've got to check out on the next page (and maybe one of you knows who made that one?)... see all the pics on the next page!

Finally! At the Designboom Mart, i had the pleasure of meeting Reiko Kaneko of the Egg Soldiers i had posted back as .org #7028! Fun thing was to finally get to poke at these in person, and check out the playful packaging!
"Egg Soldier Eggcup - Battle on the breakfast table: It's early in the morning..... Having been for a dip, the EGG quietly prepares for another day. Suddenly, from the end of the table, an army of BREAD SOLDIERS starts to approach. The MODEL SOLDIERS, fearing for the safety of their EGG, close in. They work hard to protect the EGG but one after another, the BREAD SOLDIERS just keep coming...." Images from the designboom mart at icff on the next page!
Um. Ok, i honestly don't know where to start, i did sit in a diner and scribble out a "list of things i *need* to post about" and its getting a bit lengthy. Covered all of ICFF show floor yesterday, parties and openings friday/saturday night... and design week/end isn't even over yet... i have that nagging feeling that i'm getting quite behind!!! SO, where to start?
Well for designs/designers i finally met in person, i'm in love with the brooklyn based Design Glut's collection of pieces, so cheeky, and they feel/look awesome in person!!! If you were ever on the border about buying some, they have just made my list of perfectly gift worthy. I basically need the Crude Ring, the weight and feel of it was much nicer in person! And the Hookmaker tiles would be perfect to swap into bathrooms/kitchens... to have that kind of space to hang and store those little make up brushes, hair things, and other randomness would be so nice. Their new little Smoking Guns are too funny, i want to pick one up for all my smokers, although it might back fire, sticking the barrel of that gun into your mouth might start to look too cool and become a trend of its own. Anyhow, take a look at the pics from the show on the next page... i will have far more to come throughout the next week, looks like posting will be my new excuse to slow down from the running around!
It's about time! The Jawbone has finally been redesigned to be less of a monstrosity on your face. Ok, so maybe i'm being a little harsh here, but i did fall in love with the Jawbone at first online sighting... but then i finally tried it in a store and was appalled at how massive it was on me... maybe my face just isn't large enough? But now the new one is about half the size! And it no longer cancels noise... it now assassinates it, with its upgraded "noise assassination". Rumor has it that you are also not to call this the "Jawbone 2" (so, watch out blogs that already did so)... since they are killing off the old one, so its more of a replacement product than a new option (not that you'd want the bigger one anyhow... although that one has longer talk time, but little one has more standby time). Oh, and this one also comes with a leather covered ear loop, and i hear you can headbang with it without the earloop and it stays on pretty well? Basically, i've woken up to many a good rumor about this one, and am now tempted to go hunt one down and try it! More pics on the next page as usual...
Finally! The Vitamin I.V. Plant Pot ~ self watering via I.V. bag... is available for purchase! It sure seems to be larger than i initially imagined, and is priced at 160 pounds. It's available in classic white and limited edition black and included with the lightweight fiberglass plant pot is a height adjustable metal rod, a refillable I.V. bag and a flow regulator that allows you to set watering rates to suit your plant. See close ups on the next page...
I love Mixko, but any NOTCOT regular would already know that... and i've had a particular fascination for their rings (i indulged in their felt butterfly rings as well as the first porcelain skull ring last year at ICFF)...
This year Mixko has expanded their bone china ring line, and i'm excited to show you their full collection on the next page. I think the most eye catching are the updated Skull for 2008 (deeper eyes, larger forehead, bigger teeth...) as well as the Barbie inspired collection of Barby, Cindie, and Ken heads cast in bone china to be worn as a ring (can you imagine seeing all of them in a row on a fist?). They have also created a LOVE ring and Sovereign Ring, in addition to some 1D multifaceted diamond bone china rings! Check them all out on the next page! They are also incredibly affordable at a mere 20 pounds each (check them out in the store).
On more sneak previews of ICFF launches, how adorable is Hanno the Gorilla? "From the deepest jungles comes Hanno the Gorilla! Like Hanno the Navigator, the Greek voyager who discovered gorillas 2,500 years ago, your Hanno is brave, strong, and curious. Hanno's powerful hardwood frame can hold many poses. His elastic-band muscles and durable wood limbs make him almost impervious to breakage. Hanno cannot fly and is vaguely afraid of heights. Hanno is made from sustainably harvested new-growth beech wood." He is the brainchild of David Weeks, and will be available from Areaware's new AREAWARE jr. (their new children's division) starting in Sept 08. Check out a close up of this guy on the next page!
ICFF previews are filling the inbox, and i'm getting giddier every day as we close in on NY Design Week (still kicking myself for not being able to make it to Milan this year!)... Check out the Abyss by Osko & Deichmann and Atomium by Hopf & Wortmann, both for Italian company, Kundalini.
These pieces will be a part of the Water Air Exhibition at 477 Broome Street, NY from May 17th through 20th from 12pm to 9pm. See more images of these gorgeous lamps (in and out of context!) on the next page...
Naef makes the most incredible wooden toys that transcend age... with vibrant colors and unlimited possibilities, they are good from childhood through adulthood - being both toys, desk sculptures, and perfect for coffee tables/waiting rooms! I've obsessed on them before, and Dan has even purchased a few... but i recently rediscovered the Rainbow, which was designed by Heiko Hillig.
Rainbow is not only a wooden stacking toy - that opens up the possibilities with its bright colors and playful curves... but add the mallet to it, and each piece becomes its own tuning fork! It has received numerous design awards including the Bundespreis for product design in 1998, Germany and the German Design Award Wooden Toys in 1997. And although its pricey at $175 - i can see this being a great gift for parents of new borns... or any designer regardless of age...
Yes, the near $9,000 Sears Craftsman tool set with 1470 pieces is in heavy circulation around the tech sites today (i first saw it over at Dvice) - but what truly amazed me is the catalog photography... someone clearly took a LOT of time perfectly laying out these thousands of tools... for not just the 1470 piece set, but also the 300, 198, 189, 204, 106, 130, and so forth piece sets... and they are awesome pictures! Check out a few more of my favorites on the next page...

Well i'm openly vouching for them because you cant afford to have something go wrong when shipping to your MOM ~ the gift wrap is gorgeous (no chance of gaudiness here) ~ and the selection of products is perfectly fun and gifty, while still useful and gorgeous for any situation. Some of my picks above are the: Grassy SIGG Bottle, Bio-Degradable Indoor Japanese Maple, Bambu Serving Set, Lomo Fisheye Camera, Bamboo Bath Caddy with Wine Glass Holder (i so want this!), Grobal Self Watering Pots, and Blooming Tea Sets.
Hey mom, you so never saw this post.
D!REKTRECYCLING makes the coolest envelopes ever. They have become one of my favorite things about receiving packages from Working Class Heroes - other than the incredible felt/leather sleeves for my gadgetry, of course.
The image above is what happens when i stick my camera inside the envelope... for more context move on to the next page... it's brilliant because its such a clean professional looking envelope on the outside, yet you can't help ripping it apart to learn about new places on the inside...
I recently told you that i was hunting for rain so that i could do a proper review of the Swims show covers... and previously i showed you the beautiful photographs from their catalog... well yesterday when i went up to Sausalito for a meeting, it was RAINING! Well drizzling, and then got incredibly rainy as i came out of the tunnel... so here is an impromptu photoshoot and walk through of my Swims experience.
Fresh from the inbox, Rich In Craft's new Folie à Deux "represents the quintessential duality of functional feminine artistry," created by L.A. designers, Tiffani Anne Williams and Parker Todd Brooks. So what is this ruggedly feminine bag exactly? From their site:
The body of the bag is soft and beautiful. It is made of 100% wool with a pure quilted silk lining. It was handsewn by local artisans. The handle symbolizes the sharp element of the wild. The horn shape was handcrafted in a custom mold by the designers themselves using an exclusive amalgam of polyurethane and glass. The aluminum loops that comprise the bag attachment were also specifically created for the project and were brought to fruition by CNC milling. The Folie à Deux is a unique marriage between the craftsman's hands and tools and the artist's imagination.Which is why only thirty-six Folie à Deux will ever be made. Each will be presented on a silk pillow in a handmade, cloth-covered box. And each will be marked with its unique identification number. The number will be mirrored on the underside of the wooden label which is sewn inside each Folie à Deux bag.

Mmmm matte black box, tied up in leather cord, sealed with a big glossy wax seal... along with an enticing black envelope sealed with a matching wax seal, containing silver sheets of paper... it was far too fun to bust open this latest press release to land on my doorstep this morning and discover this beautiful bottle of the freshly launched "100 proof, 100 percent agave, super-premium tequila", 1800 Silver Select Tequila. This comes from the 1800 Tequila folks (who just started the crazy billboard artist collab campaign i told you about earlier this week)... Really, the unboxing experience was too fun not to share, see the pictures below.
My favorite quotes from the press release... "If James Bond had to give up his martini, shaken, not stirred, he'd switch to 1800 Select Silver"... "For a male-oriented, status-conscious market, driven by luxury and opulence, in which authenticity and perception is all, ordering the best is what counts"... "This is a premium drink for the bon vivant who requests his single malt scotch by name, and who will now be equally fastidious about his favorite brand of tequila." I love the marketing speak - these made me giggle a bit, and hey marketers, we ladies like our premium drinks and single malt scotches too!
So seeing as i just woke up, and tequila isn't quite how i start my mornings... i haven't taken a shot yet, but will update later with how this "raises smooth to new heights"... but for now, be intrigued, and see the pics after the jump of how much fun this gorgeous packaging is!
UPDATED: now i know how to use the stopper as a shot glass... see the video... and my conclusion on the taste...
Browsing IKEA's latest today... they've jumped on a few trends i've been liking for a while... so naturally much like the laptop station that they made 10% of the original price... funny to see that they have taken to the vinyl stickering (i had kind of expected them to get on this one sooner since its so cheap/easy to produce)... and one trend i've been loving for apt dwellers that move frequently and don't want to worry about damaging the walls, yet want to mount that flat panel tv - the floating wall tv shelves, i'm kind of liking this Stiby one above that is $500... and there is also the Benno after the jump that is a mere$120. Now for the one piece i'm really really wanting - the Trollsta Sideboard... granted the whole series feels like a cheap jaime hayon knockoff... i'm still tempted. It looks really fun to add some subtle vinyl stickers to also.... few more pieces that grabbed me after the jump!
Here's that press announcement i've been dying to share with you....
Globalight - the latest Karim Rashid piece launching in collaboration with Veuve Clicquot in Milan tonight. An "artistic, orb-shaped lamp with adjustable pink light, Globalight is also an isotherm bottle carrier... First impression? It feels like the center slice of a silver space age egg with its glowingly pink fleshy yolk exposed - encasing a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Rose... The asymmetrical egg like shape is so appealing and naturally inspired, yet relatively random feeling. And if you take a look at more of the gorgeously surreal photographs of the Globalight and its couples - there is also something oh so Easter Basket-like about it... The press release reads:
New York, NY--April 15, 2008 -- Champagne house Veuve Clicquot affirms its strong commitment to design excellence, innovation and audacity with the release of Globalight by Karim Rashid, the second collaboration between the eponymous Champagne House and the prolific designer celebrating Veuve Clicquot's Rose Champagne. The unique, limited-edition piece represents Rashid's modern reinterpretation of the traditional French chandelier, icon of romantic dinners and meaningful moments. In the United States, Globalight will be unveiled exclusively at W Hotels, leader in modern travel, luxury design, and sensory experience.
Its portable nature makes entertaining a gathering of friends or someone special a charming occasion whether at home or on the road. One bottle of Veuve Clicquot Rose will remain chilled for 4 hours and the LED lights will give a soft glow for the same time, making Globalight an ideal accessory for outdoor entertaining.
Honestly - the pictures after the jump are worth checking out... beautiful sureal photographs - and a fun sketch and story of how Karim Rashid came up with the design...
There has been much talk of NOTCOT TV... actually scratch that... by *talk* i mean *pressure*. And we're definitely interested, but keep in mine we're 2 people running 4 sites, with help from a tiny handful of part timers who help when they can. If you asked me what i'd be doing now, three years ago, this wouldn't have even been in my realm of possibilities! BUT, that being said, i've been buzzing with ideas, just not the time/resources to pull it off quite yet... and when i saw the new Red Scarlet "pocket professional" camera that got announced at NAB 2008, i couldn't help but drool a little. Before even getting to the insane guts this thing has, the aesthetic alone is drool worthy...
As Engadget describes "The teensy 3K resolution camcorder is based on a 2 / 3-inch Mysterium X sensor, can shoot at 1 to 120 FPS and records to dual CompactFlash cards, which can handle up to 100MB per second of REDCODE RAW HD video. You can preview your shot on the 4.8-inch LCD, and there's a 8x RED zoom lens included. HMDI, HD-SDI, FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 inputs are built in, and the device is compatible with "many" RED ONE accessories. WiFi control is also included." - and it has still mode too!
NO Pre-orders, and it's supposedly going to be just under $3,000, slated for early 2009... So i'm sayin' it right now, if somehow people manage to get one of these in my hands to play with, i will make NOTCOT videos happen, and they will be fun and quite probably quite unlike what you're used to seeing in podcasts today. (Notice how i'm basically not promising you video until earliest 2009? I guess i'd better start brushing up on my final cut now... and/or looking for people to work on this potential new project...)
More pics to drool over after the jump as usual...
Blue Ant Studio has created yet another adorable poster for designer chair lovers... can you imagine if you went to the optometrist and they made you tell them which chairs you saw up to the tiniest ones to test your eyes (and chair knowledge)? Or what if it was part of an entry exam to design school??? Anyhow, loving this poster, check out the larger image after the jump!
Chair Exam Poster, Hand signed and dated, Size print: 11"x17", Total: 12" x 18", Price is $35 shipped in the US or Canada, $50 shipped anywhere else. This poster ships flat in a custom made mailer made by the same black backing material.
Keyport - the all in one keyfob... we've shown it to you before it was available, what the process of shipping your keys looks like, and more - and now i got hands on with one of the early production models to take apart for you! Aren't you curious how they take your original keys and cut them down with dovetailing them to interlock with the main unit? I was... so up close pics and first impressions after the jump!!!
Impulse buy while at the Monterey Bay Aquarium... a little aquatic indulgence for my kitchen... not that i NEEDED a baster, although i dont have one that amuses me quite like this one. Boston Warehouse AnimalHouse Octopus Baster - over at amazon they have the purple one, but they call it a squid... Check out pics of the store's insanity, close ups of my new adorable baster with and without its silicon head on... and it even comes with a cleaning brush! And has measurements along the side!
Look left. Look right. I'm excited to announce that we are showcasing the works of Sub-Studio in the gallery hang tags!!! While most of you should be quite familiar with Sub-Studio (anna has been contributing some pretty amazing posts to NOTCOT)... for those who don't know, Sub-Studio is the dynamic husband and wife duo - anna corpron and sean auyeung - with some incredible illustration/print skills, an adorable online shop, and a very cool blog. So explore an excerpt of their work through the tags - click away to see full pics in the gallery!
I somehow wandered across the internet to Mid-Century Modernist where i encountered this crazy 1968 Danish Sleeper Sofa that lives on ebay... and its right in the LA area for pick up. Really as *just* a sofa, i'm not that floored, but the craziness by which it opens into a sleeper for two is interesting to take a look at. More images after the jump!
This has been a very strange day, and its only 11am. Yes, usually i'm still snoozing at this hour, but was up at 7am, stats broke one of our servers last night! Sorry about that, urgh, but thank goodness for the guys at wiredtree who take such good care of us.... and then had breakfast with Souris Hong-Porretta ~ the woman is incredibly inspiring, add her to the list of people to be like when "grown up", and hearing about all dot com days reminiscing about things like ChickClick (i never knew Heidi Swanson of 101 Cookbooks was THAT heidi), i can't help but wish i were a tiny bit older to have been more conscious and active in all that was happening in the 90s... i'm rambling again, sorry, low on sleep, high on energy and ideas... and well, it's fun to get some perspective and chat with people as buzzing about the intersection of tech/design/gaming/film/art/music/internet/etc.
Moving along, mail call! Came home to a fun surprise from the boys at Diesel's Fuel For Life Fragrance department in paris... Remember what i thought was a bracelet? Well it turns out i was wrong. And they've proved me wrong by sending one over... its a big hefty shiny gold jean's chain that holds a little vial of Diesel's Fragrance, and it's refillable! Also awesome are the giant playing card like info cards that come with a CD of press pics. Gotta love the packaging. Anyhow, lots of pics below to catch you up.
