Victorinox Tomo designed by Abitax

victomo0.jpg This CES content is sponsored by BestBuyOn.com. Thanks, Best Buy!!!

On unexpected discoveries at CES, deep in the Victorinox booth, amongst the excitement of their adorable new USB drives (love the Presentation Master)… my jaw dropped a little when i spotted a case of something so different tucked away. Freshly arrived with the Victorinox CEO, Carl Elsener yesterday, their team barely had information on this new design collaboration that just arrived! Luckily, Carl was kind enough to passionately explain the story behind this gorgeous new design collaboration. The Victorinox Tomo (meaning friend in japanese) is a beautifully designed and packaged minimalist knife by Tokyo designers, Abitax! The packaging is made of molded recycled paper, just like egg cartons! (But the Swiss variation, which is apparently a thicker, denser version than our American ones.) Apparently, Abitax was smitten with Victorinox Swiss Army Knives, but wanted something even more streamlined, so they designed not only the product concept, but also the packaging, before proposing it to Victorinox. They even have 14 colors they wanted to launch with, but initially we will see 7: Red, White, Blue, Green, Pink, Yellow, and a lighter Minty Green. The handles are in a matte, hard plastic feeling nylon, and seem perfect for everywhere from design stores as small gifts, to customizable corporate gifts. There is a Victorinox logo subtly pressed into the handle, as well as one on the exterior and interior of the packaging. You have to see more of the packaging and product up close on the next page!

Slice and Karim Hands on

slice1.jpg So, after posting the Slice Precision Cutter, we couldn't resist finding out more, and Slice was nice enough to send a few over to play with when Alyssa reached out to them! So what is it like up close? And how does it compare to our trusty Xactos? Well, xacto has nothing to worry about, but the Slice Precision Cutter is still pretty awesome for certain uses!

The thing corners amazingly! Can get some really great curves out of it ~ where it will never take over my xacto (this one is my favorite still, but unfortunately i haven't found it yet while unpacking the office - work in progress! so up there is another bigger one i've been using on boxes and stuff) ~ the blade is only good to cut through a few pieces of paper ~ so for scrapbooking, vinyl cutting, etc its perfect, but not so much for heftier projects. Physically, it feels great in your hand, nicely weighted ~ super sleek with its matte green coating, and nice cap on it. You an definitely cut with it as if you're painting a brushstroke or scribbling with a pen which is really fun. So all in all, for 7$ its definitely worth adding to your arsenal. Check out more close ups on the next page... and pics of the Y-Peeler they sent over too!

Leatherman Argentum 25th Collection

leatherman1.jpg Leatherman is celebrating its 25th anniversary with the Argentum Collection ~ an incredible (and pricey) line of limited edition hand-crafted leathermans by world-renowned artist and silversmith Adrian Pallarols. There are 7 pieces in the collection, and The Charge Dorado is $40,000, the Charge Acanto $12,000... and they work their way down to a mere $240 for a little Squirt Lagrima de Luna. See more close ups on the next page, as well as pics of sketches, more info on the artist, and you've got to see the video at the Argentum Collection page.

p.s.
chats with a few friends and fellow leatherman loyals... and we all agree so far, we're not completely sure what the appeal is, but i'm rather fascinated by the juxtaposition of the perfectly engineered with the artisan, 7th generation, craftsman combination... and i do kind of want the Acanto, if only it was a Wave?
