Browsing IKEA's latest today... they've jumped on a few trends i've been liking for a while... so naturally much like the laptop station that they made 10% of the original price... funny to see that they have taken to the vinyl stickering (i had kind of expected them to get on this one sooner since its so cheap/easy to produce)... and one trend i've been loving for apt dwellers that move frequently and don't want to worry about damaging the walls, yet want to mount that flat panel tv - the floating wall tv shelves, i'm kind of liking this Stiby one above that is $500... and there is also the Benno after the jump that is a mere$120. Now for the one piece i'm really really wanting - the Trollsta Sideboard... granted the whole series feels like a cheap jaime hayon knockoff... i'm still tempted. It looks really fun to add some subtle vinyl stickers to also.... few more pieces that grabbed me after the jump!

Here's that press announcement i've been dying to share with you....
Globalight - the latest Karim Rashid piece launching in collaboration with Veuve Clicquot in Milan tonight. An "artistic, orb-shaped lamp with adjustable pink light, Globalight is also an isotherm bottle carrier... First impression? It feels like the center slice of a silver space age egg with its glowingly pink fleshy yolk exposed - encasing a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Rose... The asymmetrical egg like shape is so appealing and naturally inspired, yet relatively random feeling. And if you take a look at more of the gorgeously surreal photographs of the Globalight and its couples - there is also something oh so Easter Basket-like about it... The press release reads:
New York, NY--April 15, 2008 -- Champagne house Veuve Clicquot affirms its strong commitment to design excellence, innovation and audacity with the release of Globalight by Karim Rashid, the second collaboration between the eponymous Champagne House and the prolific designer celebrating Veuve Clicquot's Rose Champagne. The unique, limited-edition piece represents Rashid's modern reinterpretation of the traditional French chandelier, icon of romantic dinners and meaningful moments. In the United States, Globalight will be unveiled exclusively at W Hotels, leader in modern travel, luxury design, and sensory experience.
Its portable nature makes entertaining a gathering of friends or someone special a charming occasion whether at home or on the road. One bottle of Veuve Clicquot Rose will remain chilled for 4 hours and the LED lights will give a soft glow for the same time, making Globalight an ideal accessory for outdoor entertaining.
Honestly - the pictures after the jump are worth checking out... beautiful sureal photographs - and a fun sketch and story of how Karim Rashid came up with the design...
There has been much talk of NOTCOT TV... actually scratch that... by *talk* i mean *pressure*. And we're definitely interested, but keep in mine we're 2 people running 4 sites, with help from a tiny handful of part timers who help when they can. If you asked me what i'd be doing now, three years ago, this wouldn't have even been in my realm of possibilities! BUT, that being said, i've been buzzing with ideas, just not the time/resources to pull it off quite yet... and when i saw the new Red Scarlet "pocket professional" camera that got announced at NAB 2008, i couldn't help but drool a little. Before even getting to the insane guts this thing has, the aesthetic alone is drool worthy...
As Engadget describes "The teensy 3K resolution camcorder is based on a 2 / 3-inch Mysterium X sensor, can shoot at 1 to 120 FPS and records to dual CompactFlash cards, which can handle up to 100MB per second of REDCODE RAW HD video. You can preview your shot on the 4.8-inch LCD, and there's a 8x RED zoom lens included. HMDI, HD-SDI, FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 inputs are built in, and the device is compatible with "many" RED ONE accessories. WiFi control is also included." - and it has still mode too!
NO Pre-orders, and it's supposedly going to be just under $3,000, slated for early 2009... So i'm sayin' it right now, if somehow people manage to get one of these in my hands to play with, i will make NOTCOT videos happen, and they will be fun and quite probably quite unlike what you're used to seeing in podcasts today. (Notice how i'm basically not promising you video until earliest 2009? I guess i'd better start brushing up on my final cut now... and/or looking for people to work on this potential new project...)
More pics to drool over after the jump as usual...
Swedish, I Do Design, and their gorgeous Union Benches... i showed you their Outdoor Union Bench and renderings of the indoor one previously, you remember, the gorgeously sleek concrete/wood outdoor benches that were shaped like three hemispheres molded together? Well Salone time is upon us, and they've shared the two new glossy red and black indoor versions (perfect for lounges, clubs, waiting areas) and a DESK! which looks like a very fun place to work closely together yet still have quite a bit of your own space to take over! I'm very tempted by both. Get a first look at all of these new pieces after the jump!
Blue Ant Studio has created yet another adorable poster for designer chair lovers... can you imagine if you went to the optometrist and they made you tell them which chairs you saw up to the tiniest ones to test your eyes (and chair knowledge)? Or what if it was part of an entry exam to design school??? Anyhow, loving this poster, check out the larger image after the jump!
Chair Exam Poster, Hand signed and dated, Size print: 11"x17", Total: 12" x 18", Price is $35 shipped in the US or Canada, $50 shipped anywhere else. This poster ships flat in a custom made mailer made by the same black backing material.
Keyport - the all in one keyfob... we've shown it to you before it was available, what the process of shipping your keys looks like, and more - and now i got hands on with one of the early production models to take apart for you! Aren't you curious how they take your original keys and cut them down with dovetailing them to interlock with the main unit? I was... so up close pics and first impressions after the jump!!!
Impulse buy while at the Monterey Bay Aquarium... a little aquatic indulgence for my kitchen... not that i NEEDED a baster, although i dont have one that amuses me quite like this one. Boston Warehouse AnimalHouse Octopus Baster - over at amazon they have the purple one, but they call it a squid... Check out pics of the store's insanity, close ups of my new adorable baster with and without its silicon head on... and it even comes with a cleaning brush! And has measurements along the side!
Look left. Look right. I'm excited to announce that we are showcasing the works of Sub-Studio in the gallery hang tags!!! While most of you should be quite familiar with Sub-Studio (anna has been contributing some pretty amazing posts to NOTCOT)... for those who don't know, Sub-Studio is the dynamic husband and wife duo - anna corpron and sean auyeung - with some incredible illustration/print skills, an adorable online shop, and a very cool blog. So explore an excerpt of their work through the tags - click away to see full pics in the gallery!
Louis Vuitton is really fighting back against counterfeiting these days. Did you hear about how the IACC (International Anticounterfeiting Coalition), which includes brands like LV, Chanel, Abercrombie, etc, sponsored for-credit college classes on the issue? Where their PR folks were "teaching" alongside some professors? It seems to have caused quite a stir...
How about their little Canal St-eqsue set up outside the Brooklyn Museum of Art for the Murakami exhibit launch party? It is a fake set up of a fake bag seller that sells real bags. The concept itself made me laugh - and i was previously amused by the idea of putting a pop up store INSIDE the exhibit which makes it art, only its also a fully functioning store, but i think this tops it. Thank goodness for the internet allowing me to follow the linktrail from High Snobiety who got the information/pics from SuperTouch who got their pictures from the Flickr of Athlete Director, David Lam... see more of my favorites of his photos below. It is really quite a hilarious set up - notice the hand written labels below the paintings for $6000?
UPDATED - love the WWD article, "Fighting the Fakes: Louis Vuitton and Murakami Make a Show of It" on this as well!
So my mother sends me an email linking Target's Club Wedd Catalog. Yes, a catalog for those prepping for their vows. No, i'm not at all anywhere near that stage of my life... and i don't *think* she's hinting at anything (she'd be skipping a major step, seeing as i'm single). Anyhow, turns out what she claims to have wanted to point out is that she really liked page 74 which has a nice "what you need in your kitchen drawer" type diagram... i love that they have things like Silicone Gadgets, Angled Measuring Cups, Potato Ricer, Zester, etc... really the whole guide could be an easy way to catch your bachelor friends up on what they need in their houses...
ALSO noteworthy... when two giants converge, as soon as i started flipping through this digital catalog, i kept feeling like i was at Daily Candy, but i knew i was at Target, naturally i thought i was losing it... Turns out i'm not completely crazy, and they enlisted Daily Candy's signature illustrator, Sujean Rim to paint the adorable images of newly weds in various stages... see more images below of my favorites!
I somehow wandered across the internet to Mid-Century Modernist where i encountered this crazy 1968 Danish Sleeper Sofa that lives on ebay... and its right in the LA area for pick up. Really as *just* a sofa, i'm not that floored, but the craziness by which it opens into a sleeper for two is interesting to take a look at. More images after the jump!
This has been a very strange day, and its only 11am. Yes, usually i'm still snoozing at this hour, but was up at 7am, stats broke one of our servers last night! Sorry about that, urgh, but thank goodness for the guys at wiredtree who take such good care of us.... and then had breakfast with Souris Hong-Porretta ~ the woman is incredibly inspiring, add her to the list of people to be like when "grown up", and hearing about all dot com days reminiscing about things like ChickClick (i never knew Heidi Swanson of 101 Cookbooks was THAT heidi), i can't help but wish i were a tiny bit older to have been more conscious and active in all that was happening in the 90s... i'm rambling again, sorry, low on sleep, high on energy and ideas... and well, it's fun to get some perspective and chat with people as buzzing about the intersection of tech/design/gaming/film/art/music/internet/etc.
Moving along, mail call! Came home to a fun surprise from the boys at Diesel's Fuel For Life Fragrance department in paris... Remember what i thought was a bracelet? Well it turns out i was wrong. And they've proved me wrong by sending one over... its a big hefty shiny gold jean's chain that holds a little vial of Diesel's Fragrance, and it's refillable! Also awesome are the giant playing card like info cards that come with a CD of press pics. Gotta love the packaging. Anyhow, lots of pics below to catch you up.
Candy and Nicho, are the Aussie duo that make up Noferin. Exciting news i recently received from them - they are coming out to Santa Monica (from Carrara Island, Australia!) for their solo exhibition at Copro Nason on April 5th! I've been begging them for a sneak peek at what is to come... and studio pics and perhaps some paintings in progress coming soon... so far i've got a sneak peek at the Pecanpals (which you may remember from .org #7556) - made up of Fanelli, Pecan, Pandacake, Claudius and Jac Jac (read their bios on the Noferin site). These little guys are entirely made from wood, hand crafted, hand painted, and limited to 200 per character! The final versions may vary slightly from these prototypes, but i hope not by much, since they are pretty perfect looking as they are! See closeups of the whole set after the jump! I love all the little sidekicks... the grass cuttings, elephant, and dumbells are definitely my favorites.
NOTCOT Note: I sent Justine (aka Rugenius) on a mission since she's living in the UK, to go buy some of these delicious Fru Puds and Gu Puds and take some pics and let me live vicariously through her... Here's what she's reported back, with pics!
Fru Puds and Gu Puds certainly know how to do packaging. It's hard not to pick them up at the market. In fact, I picked some within my first few weeks in the UK! It's hard to deny the sensuous chocolatey goodness advertised on that packaging....and I'm alway a sucker for a nice black matte. I think we started with chocolate mousse, the traditional. So when the order came in from NOTCOT to check out some more of their range, I was all too happy to oblige. I thought we should go for something a bit different though. So we went for the Gu chocolate pots and the Fru carrot cake bites. See all my pics of packaging, unboxing, and indulging below!
The Nomad Yurt by EcoShack. I try to settle down, i try to find a "home" and stay put, but i seldom last more than a year. I'm a socal girl who's home is in her car, on the road, or bouncing between hotel rooms and friends' places around the world... I suppose i'm a modern day digital nomad. A digi-nomad that needs a yurt!
The one object i walked away from CA Boom V lusting after and itching to drop $8000 on is the Nomad Yurt... it breaks down and pops up in under a half hour (depending how many friends you have), and gives you an instant 120 square feet of calm, shady, cozy privacy, with a nice woody platform (don't worry about what the ground is like around you like most yurts), a light sturdy bamboo structure, and weatherMAX covering. Whether you use it as an instant studio, a guest room, a spa treatment room, or the best backyard under-tree-house ever... its a fun way to get some extra space, that you can pack up into the back of the car. Take a look at the images of this eco-friendly, permit-free, portable structure as it was at CA Boom, the view from within, and diagrams and images of how you put it together after the jump.
So, what do you think? Instead of investing in "real" offices, wouldn't it be fun to have a group (commune?) of these instant-office/studio yurts out in Topanga?
A+R is the closest thing out there to a NOTCOT store... and the novelty has yet to wear off, since Andy keeps the place stocked with far too much that makes me feel like a kid in a designer candy store. Aside from the Theosauruses that i showed you earlier... i fell for this Puzzle Dinner Tray from Royal VKB designed by Wendy Boudewijns. In a nice unbreakable melamine, this tray helps kids get used to what goes where... and having loved puzzles of all sorts growing up, i just know my mom would have gotten me one of these had it been around when i was a wee one. Although i'm sure i've seen this around the web, playing with it in person won me over to post about it... see some hands on pics below!
The German Theosaurus - the porcelain piggy bank with nostrils so large you're sure it ought to be able to sniff out some truffles for you... or, at least, help you save up some coin to buy some! After CA Boom V (which took merely an hour to cover) ~ i headed over to Abbot Kinney and stopped in on Andy over at A+R, where he had just gotten the Theosauruses in, and he even has an exclusive on them this month! These adorable piggy banks showed up on .org as #7013, but seeing them in person, you can't help but want to pick it up and bring it home... really, it's one worth checking out in person, and would make a darling gift for nearly anyone, once you figure out which one to buy. We debated whether the sitting or standing was more cute... and personally, i think the sitting one is most adorable when next to the standing one, however if i only got to go home with one, definitely the standing one... in porcelain with the blue pattern! Although, the sitting one does have a locking bottom, versus the two cork feet of the standing one... and the family of the 4 did look most adorable together. Anyhow, take a look below to see how they look in context of the real world (versus the uber-clean product photography world).
You can't go wrong with Magis, the products both large and small have had me lusting since i was a kid... and tonight in particular i've been rediscovering their Me Too children's collection (many of which have been on NOTCOT over the years)... one that i hadn't noticed before is this Alma and Linus stacking chair and table set from Spanish designer, Javier Mariscal. The most incredible part is seeing the patterns on the back up close, i love the trees filled with the birds in their leaves! Made of injection molded Polypropylene with glass fibre, this set is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Below, see not only a close up of the detail of the back of these seats, but also a few other Mariscal pieces for the Magis Me Too Collection (like the crazy angler fish looking play thing!)
Happy Pi Day ~ and for all of you who wonder where all these crazy posts and ideas and inspiration come from... well for the sake of my amusement, here's something silly i ended up with tonight (blame the lack of sleep and insanity that is LA this week... also Linhchi brought me a sun jar and combine that with my vinyl cutter.... ) Naturally all the craziness that you see propagating across the network comes from somewhere! But where? My glowing jar full of NOTCOTs! (Whatever a NOTCOT may be, that, as surprising as it is to most, is still quite unknown). So for today's random project, NOTCOTs are like fireflies, visual manifestations of all the crazy inspiration lighting us up?
Ok, so basically, Sun Jar+ Vinyl Cutter = Jar of NOTCOTs (and this will probably continue to evolve into other ideas...) Also, on Sun Jars, although i've gifted and recommended these solar powered glowing jars often, this is the first time i've been gifted one! And i must say for the next one i gift, i will ditch the packaging, personalize it in some subtle way for the recipient, and present it as simply the jar, with a beautiful ribbon to tie a notecard on. See more pics below! (also the dissection of my sun jar...)
NOTCOT Note: Here's another article from Anna Corpron of Sub-Studio!
Rahee Yoon is sticking it to the old adage that bigger is better. Rather than going for the largest carat, Rahee has created what she calls "the world's thinnest ring" - out of a single sheet of paper. She designed two books around these rings - one with 25 different ring designs, and the other describing the processes to cut the rings out of the book. The result is conceptual, ephemeral jewelry. See more of her rings after the jump!
On fun tempting things i'm currently debating... i'm quite drawn to this Gryphon Timeless Trench Coat in Grey - "Dove double-breasted cotton trench with gold mirrored leather griffin buckle fastening. Gryphon trench has epaulettes on shoulder, button fastenings and a pocket on each hip. This Gryphon style comes with two belts, a traditional self-tie style and a glamorous gold style for evening. An essential in every fashion savvy urbanite's wardrobe" Isn't it adorable? More images below.
Blame the Kindle for the extra quiet Monday as far as posts go. This unexpected new toy showed up on the doorstep this morning, and i've been a bit distracted since. In all honesty, as far as first impressions go... i LOVE the packaging and use of playful typography and book like packaging... as well as using the same patterns on the non-slip rubbery back of the kindle itself. As for using the actual Kindle to read books/newspapers/blogs/wikipedia... i was skeptical, never figured it was for me. But, i'm kind of hooked. Unlike the Zune experience, this worked like a breeze out of the box. Finds its connection, lets me scroll around, even give me a little intro/walkthrough as one of the first files to check out... and the readability of the screen is SO nice on the eyes... (i'm *this* close to getting a new macbook pro and ditching this current one to go back to a matte screen before they get rid of them all)... flipping pages is a such a nice gesture, and i'm in love with the mirrored little scroller squares. I know i'm a bit late to the game on this one, but check out the pics after the jump to see how nicely done the packaging is!
So far, i have impulse bought the new Sophie Kinsella book Remember Me (embarrassing as it is, i'll admit it, i read a few of those Shopaholic books on the beach while on post-uni euro trips) to try out, and have been surprised how quickly i've been flying through the pages between working on the laptop today and taking calls on the pearl (this may be terrible for multitasking!)... i am also trying out the WSJ and NYTimes subscriptions, but so far it feels a bit too RSS like for my tastes, and i think newspapers are still most fun in print for me, but this is definitely nice to slip in the purse. And of course... i've browsed the NOTCOTs on the web browser, and while we're not the best optimized for advanced kindle rendering... in default mode its not half bad! Also tried browsing gmail a little.... anyhow, check out the unboxing pics below, probably more to come on this new toy later...
Wow. Fendi. "Artist Baguette", freshly launched for a mere $1300, a new stark white version of their classic - designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi in 1997 - in coated canvas? And it comes with 10 Pantone Universe markers! It sure looks like they are taking a page from the current trends with the vinyl toy blanks... or coloring books/placemats/other children oriented goodies. And in fact quite a few purse sites seem a bit appalled by the whole thing (Purse Blog, Bag Snob, etc)...
Anyhow, putting the pricetag aside, lets think about this from an arts perspective... there is a LOT of collaboration potential here. Can you imagine getting a few of these into the hands of some talented artists and toy designers, and letting them have their way with them? The potential to merge a fashionable classic accessory with art could have some very interesting results (which could also be a way to increase that initial investment, not to mention actually create an even more unique one of a kind designer clutch). So i must admit i'm tempted, although i might have to hold out till i can draw on my own Birkin... See many more images after the jump!
It seems like this is one of those situations where packaging makes a world of difference... if it were presented as a gorgeous new white clutch and nothing more, would anyone dare take a sharpie to it? Or would the die hard fashionistas complain about the ridiculousness? And it's not *just* a white canvas bag, it still has all the detailed stylings of a classic Baguette, and additionally has a playfully multicolored cartoon-like lining!
UPDATE 03.13.08 - i walked by a Fendi store, and couldn't help myself, so went in and bothered them to show me the bag... that box is FAR bigger than i expected, and the bag is quite hideous... not nice to the touch at all... the coated canvas reminded me more of random art school creations than a designer bag.
This is an odd silly post, i know, but i couldn't resist. These Ben Sherman slip ons are super cheap ($40 on sale!)... and they were just so cute, they made me laugh when i saw them. They are Ben Sherman. They are black and white (with the ONE red ghosty). They are covered in Pacman Blinkies! (or is it Blinkys?). And some silly part of me half wants them. They are just too cute and silly. More pics below.
Grand Theft Auto IV Special Edition comes with lots of fun schwag - Special Edition is presented in a customized Grand Theft Auto metal safety deposit box and contains Grand Theft Auto IV in special packaging, The Grand Theft Auto IV Art Book with never-before-seen production artwork, Selected Soundtrack CD with exclusive material to this release, Rockstar Keychain for the safety deposit box keys, and a Limited Edition Rockstar Duffel Bag And Amazon pre-orders also get a free Liberty City GTA License Plate as well. Retailing at $89 and releasing on April 29, 2008 for the PS3 (and the 360). I impulse bought my PS2 specifically for GTA back in college... and now i'm extremely tempted to impulse buy another PS3 (the first one i bought i left for my ex)... although perhaps its worth holding out for the super slim PS3 to come? Trailer videos below!
