Doe SF

doesf.jpg
Was wandering Lower Haight today and stumbled upon the most adorable haven of dear goods as well as great jewelry, art, clothing, paper goods, and more! (more includes those great ballet flats that can be folded in half to fit in your purse when you go out and your heels start to destroy your feet) Doe SF is a must see added to my list of usuals for this city… gave in and got that first cute pin you see to the left. They also currently have a great exhibition of the works of Jill Bliss on thats worth checking out.

French Sloganization

tee-shirt529.JPG.jpgAh, La Fraise, you are so brilliant - i love you more than threadless. The Gallery of Slogans, you can submit to have printed as tees… and all are in french, and yes the foreign appeal is always fun. “Je vous aime. Sauf toi là-bas.” [I love you all. *Except you over there.] “On reconnait le bonheur au bruit qu’il fait en claquant la porte” [One recognizes the joy in the noise that he makes in slamming the door. ] “Un écran s’éteind, un être s’éveille” [The screen turns off, the person awakens.] “pan! z’etes tous morts” [Bang! You’re all dead.] “Je me fais trop vieux pour ces conneries” [I make myself too old for this shit] “Des millions d’années pour en arriver là” [Millions of years to get here.] “Optimystique” [optimystic] “J’ai eu une enfance formidable, si on exclut les pulls jacquard.” [I had a wonderful childhood, if you leave out the jacquard sweaters.] “Plus le temps il passe, plus le futur est plus moin loin de quand qu’il était près…” [The more time that passes, the more the future is more less far than when it was close…]

Um. Wow.

petplus.jpg
So i couldn’t resist showing this in this minimal context - but if you simply can not resist, click below to continue reading and see the image of these objects in use. I figured it might be more fun to guess what you were looking at first.

… ok so now that you’ve guessed - it’s Alice Wang’s Pet Plus project “aimed to explore how people treat their pets as human surrogates.” It claims to offer packages which act as “social supplements” as your pets veer into taking on the roll of social surrogates, quickly replacing the love of your life. Ah, creepy/funny… and i just love the packaging.

Tosaryu

tosaryu.jpg
Pet peeve - wet bathmats. When someone else showers first and you step out and the bathmat is still wet, it doesn’t feel so nice on the feet. So i found these wooden japanese bathmats by Tosaryu which feel great to step out on (and they never get freezing cold like tile, nor to they get soggy feeling like a towel/mat), and they are made of aromatic Japanese “Hinoki” Cypress which contains antibacterial resins. It also helps to create a great clean minimalist look in the bathroom. Additionally, while browsing their site, noticed this cute stool as well as this toilet paper, towel, and/or magazine rack piece… nice alternative options to the chrome/stainless looks.

Pom Pom

pompom.jpg
SF - got here - found my friend an incredible top floor apt in Hayes Valley with a great view and freshly remodeled - but the relocation people are slow with the furniture… so we’ve been living with next to nothing out of suitcases for almost a week now. That being said - i was dying of thirst and in a very ghetto Safeway just before closing the other night and finally found some POM Tea! They only had the black tea, and the packaging was too enticing not to pass up - so it has been christened the first real glass to drink from here. So yes, i promote the Pom tea, it tastes good and serves as a cool glass.

Also the Pom Wonderful ads crack me up - check them out at the gallery.

Viola Valone jewelry

violavalone.jpg

Nevermind the fact that “Both Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears have been wearing Viola Valone pieces.” This stuff is too intriguing to not mention. Skulls? Check. Pirates? Check. Vampires and blood? Check and check. I’m a fan of the Vampire Kiss necklace and the charm bracelet myself, and notcot likes the heart with blood drop necklace. And you’ll probably find something you like too on the Viola Valone website. Too bad there isn’t more info about the designer there…

Conphorm

conphorm.jpg
Felt + Long Zippers + 3D geometric vision = Conphorm. In classic design school speak - “conphorm is a product design practice that explores the relationships among material, structure, and space that exist in everyday objects. conphorm makes these relationships tangible by connecting how objects are used with their fundamental qualities of formation, so that understanding the objects is more intuitive.” Designed in Berkeley, Conphorm has got some fun bags going on.

Algues

algues.jpg
This is Algues by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec in 2004. Was scouring SF for unique, organic, playful, modern wall pieces for my friend’s new place and rediscovered these classics. Sold in sets of 6, in white and green, you essentially build your own algae mass that can be as subtle or overpowering as you choose.

Simply Mash

masher-l.jpgI mashed my first mash potatoes this Thanksgiving… with a FORK. and they ended up a wee bit on the chunky side. It is hard work! So for a mere 10$ this piece of art - the Simply Mash from Chef’s Planet - is a neccessity for any kitchen. It’s ergonomic design is supposedly easier on the hands and wrists, requires no pounding, and creates soft and fluffy mashed potatoes! It is also a 2006 finalist in the Housewares Design Awards.

Stray Shopping Carts

0810955202_l.jpgHere’s an example of what happens when an artist/graphic designer with a thing for scientific classification turns his discriminating eye to our urban pollution of Shopping Carts. Stray Shopping Carts of Eastern North America, The: A Guide to Field Identification By Julian Montague As described on the publisher’s site as

A must-have for anyone with a passion for shopping carts and a love of the great outdoors: This field guide introduces a groundbreaking classification system for abandoned shopping carts. Accompanied by photographic documentation of actual stray cart sightings, this unique guide depicts the diversity of an often overlooked phenomenon. On close examination, readers inevitably begin to see these carts as human, at times poignant in their abandoned, decrepit state, hilariously incapacitated, or ingeniously co-opted. At once rigorous and absurd, this book allows the layperson to identify and classify their own cart encounters, based on the situation in which the carts were found.

So i was flipping through this at a bookstore in Berkeley yesterday, and i couldn’t stop laughing, while simultaneously being made more aware of the impact and spread of shopping carts on our world! To imagine that this was merely a sampling of New England is horrifying when you scale it to what it must be like around the world. Anyhow the graphic design, photography, and layout were as playfully done as the subject matter, so it is definitely worth taking a look at.

Pencil Concept

chopstickpencil.jpgSo i found these pencil/chopsticks at Pearl River in Soho, and they cracked me up. Isn’t it how you imagined crazed starving artists eating their food anyhow? Delivery shows up, and pencils still in hand, you use them to eat? Well these are tapered for the eating - and unfortunately not so designed for the drawing (just painted tips to mimick pencils). So, a great concept, that got my wheels turning - what if they were real pencils?

Tumi Travel

tumiadapter.jpg
Travelling again - in San Francisco now! (till the 31st) - hence the slight gap in posting - helped a friend pack up his whole life and am now in a hotel using the internet off my treo to write this. Web God of NOTCOT, Jermacide, has been made and offer he can’t refuse - so now i’m up here apt hunting and settling him while probably stumbling upon things to share with you.

But i digress, giving credit where credit is due, Tumi (who’s classic line of suitcases will always have a soft spot in my heart - but the newer tech and colorful stuff wasn’t doing it for me for a few years there) has an incredibly functional/nicely designed travel adapter! That is surprisingly sleek and compact given that it takes in every input and provides every output! And has a cute carrying case. Also Tumi+Ducati teamed up, and i love Ducati…

ITS OFFICIAL!

notcotlaunch.jpg
TODAY is the official RELAUNCH of NOTCOT! Although not too much has changed on your side of things - the migration and rebuild and sorting of files and much behind the scenes is complete, and the kinks in the new designs have been sorted out, and in the side strings (look left, look right) you are seeing the launch of the NOTCOT Gallery - a space that now and again may be used to showcase artists/designers/curated themes of images and objects which amuse and perplex us. [We’d love input or ideas if you’d like to be featured here, or know someone who ought to be seen.] So i’m taking this moment to say thanks to all of you for supporting us, and in the next few months there should be a lot of fun new stuff going evolving and emerging here… but one step at a time, so check back frequently! Also - can you believe we are officially 1 year old? It blows my mind.

A USB Future

usbgoo.jpg
Dialogue5 was an exhibition that ran in Munich back in Dec-Jan, and i’d seen some of the images floating around, but never saw these! Your USB bra? USB male and female rings? (see how you fit? nice metaphor?) The physical manifestation of logging in? - you bring your own “key”… more than a key it is the handle itself? And the usb CROWBAR… for physical/digital hacking, how multipurpose. The site has nice refreshing blue line drawings on white and some fun images of the actual exhibition as well…

Analogous

analagous.jpg
Elsewares has more pieces by Analogous Jewelry - made in Brooklyn by Judith Hoetker. While we’ve seen the razor before… how great are these others? The gun is apparently cast from an old GI Joe gun - the bird with the fly are cast from old Victorian pieces, as i assume the arrow piercing heart earings are as well? This fun blend of old and a twist are playful and beautiful. My favorite is the grenade tiffany bracelet, which has such a nice weight to it, and the ring it hangs on looks like the grenade pin! [please note i had fun collaging this one, so images are not to scale relative to one another.]
