Beyond Blond

247735_swedenlogo.jpgCelebrate Swedish Lifestyle Month in Los Angeles… and this great poster should be popping up around the state. Love the perfect blonde hair cut out on the Swedish blue (does remind me of the Debbies from the Oblongs though, which is a tad disturbing). But beyond the fun poster, some sweet events popping up all month including singer-songwriter José Gonzales performing in SF and LA (he’s the genius behind the music to the Sony Bravia Bouncing Balls commercial)… and a nordic walk at Santa Monica Beach… as well as music, art, and film screenings!

work in progress

Ciao* playing with css this weekend, so consider this the soft launch of redesign… still working on all the details that crop up while actually using the site. Categories are simplified and more accessible. Comments (now notes!) can be made in the top right corner of posts. Top two birds will lead you places. Strands down the sides are showcasing products/art we love, and will link you to them… if you have great designs or products to show, space can be *rented to show them off. Also inserted floater text ads/announcement space between the first few posts. And overall cleaned things up a little… after all NOTCOT turns 1 sometime in March.

ok HELP - since you are the ones leaving notes, where do you like having the link to leave them? is it too obscure in the top corner? I also had it as a bigger comment flag graphic in the bottom right, but it seemed to bloat the posts. So, what do you want? and then balance that with what looks nice?

Rose curtain

690060_frt.jpgI never really expected to find myself describing a shower curtain as sexy. But this Rose Petal Shower Curtain over at Anthropologie manages to pull it off. Can you imagine how a silhouette would look behind that? And have those scalloped edges hanging over one of those freestanding tubs with the feet? This would brighten up and beautify almost any bathroom. I think i want it.

Frozen Peas

peas.jpgTiming is everything, and products submissions follow that rule. I happen to be sitting here answering emails and phone calls, and in came Frozen Peas email about their new jewelry/wallet line… and while i’ve been veering away from featuring too much handmade/crafty wares, this dinosaur graphic grabbed the 5 year old within, and i had to put it up. Also these screened wooden two sided necklaces are so simple, yet adorable and perfect for that hippy/earthy style that is back this season.

Styrofoam Cups

8g.jpgThis installation is completely composed of styrofoam coffee cups. The works of Tara Donovan have passed me before (i’m sure you’ve seen the image of a giant cube made of toothpicks), but this styrofoam structure is just so organic in nature and bizarre yet lovely to look at, had to post this image. Or the furry large growths that resemble moss growing or crystals forming under a microscope that are made of purely fishing line… take a look at them here.

Toy Gods

mccarty.jpg
Toys are Gods. We knew that since we were kids (and if not, you lived a deprived childhood). Blythe traveled the “real” world, but Bryan McCarty brings figurines and barbies to a level of real world glam that she never reached. He literally breathes life and creates mysetry with his images of some of my favorite adult swim characters, dolls, and other toys. You know they have fixed features and emotions, yet he taps into some bizarre world that makes his images playfully personal. WOW. just wow. Now if only my local cafe would give up their horrible photography exhibition and have these images to mesmerize customers.

Fortune from me

fortune-sm.jpgHey here’s my present to you for the moment, a took a quick picture of it, but it’s now big enough to print out and cut out and try it out. So tempt fate and see what life has in store for you… with Wheel 1: we have the simple yes/no and a number to carry over to wheel 2. Wheel 2: first letter of your future spouses name (giving that apple stem/soda can top method a run for its money). Wheel 3: spouse’s profession, ok now i just can’t get over these icons. esp handicraft and engineer. Wheel 4: best of all how many KIDS you will have… scares me that it goes up to 12, in ADDITION to the twins and triplets. Anyhow, here’s a postcard i found. Ahhh 1810 people, lets just say i’m glad its 2006.

Mother of pearl

mother-of-pearl-gold-huge.jpgMother of pearl inlays have long been seen as a gorgeous addition to engravings, jewelry, cutlery, etc., but have you ever seen it covering a whole wall? or a room? or a bathroom? Maya Romanoff, “extraordinary surface materials”, really does deliver on its motto. Her Mother of Pearl tiles seem exquisite, and if used carefully could add an incredible touch to sleek modern interiors.

“Layers of genuine shell are hand inlaid on tiles. Maya Romanoff’s newest invention, bringing the most beautiful, authentic materials within reach. This tropical veneer is easy to install, has a stain-resistant coating, and turns corners. Fantastic as a furniture inset, too.”

Dror

dror.jpg
This image of Studio Dror’s “Expanding Herb Pot” mesmerized me. Its just a bizarre yet beautiful idea. And the hour glass lamp seems like the ideal piece for being stuck in a dark room, watching the time go by as it casts large shadows of the sand falling. And the concept of the broken martini glass just made me smile. the glass was designed for Bombay Saphire and is available at the Pop Up Store in Manhattan.

Imaginary Friends

flowercards.jpg
I love Elsewares, and must admit it bothered me when Design*Sponge found these cards on their site, and i hadn’t seem them yet! They are truly inspiring, and i can’t stop staring at the images and the gentle transitions in coloration. Designed by Imaginary Friends (I was unable to find the website for them so far), these are hand printed cards. Yes i’m still staring at them, and the image links to a larger image of these favorites of mine (there are 8 total).

On anther note, anxiously awaiting D*S’ big redesign and new features. Congrats to Grace on leaving her job to take D*S to the next level (or next few levels)! And can’t wait to see how her new features turn out.

OOBA

ooba.png
For starters, the name [OOBA] makes you NEED to say it over and over. Yes the primal chidish side of me has emerged this morning. Stumbled upon this breathtaking bassinet over at Greener Grass Design, and its seriously objects like these that make me swoon. And this photo with the matching chair, in the grass, how calm and peaceful and simply modern does that feel? The story behind this line is just as sweet, “Ooba was created when designers and first-time parents Scott Wilson, Kathleen Brandenburg and Dan Kraemer realized the need for baby furniture that complemented their home and lifestyle.” Basically, taking a trio of the most influential designers and brand strategists, and then giving them the biggest inspiration of their lives (their first kids)… and out pops Ooba, the beginning of a children’s line of furniture unlike any other. Eagerly awaiting the crib, rocker, and glider.

Miss Bibi Minis

jolliare.jpg
Wow. French theme tonight it seems. Miss Bibi has some incredible miniatures - and again following the trend of the moment - precious metals forged into mini weapons/tools/objects as earings/rings/necklaces. In addition to these tiny shoes, guns, chandeliers, there are saws, charm necklaces of tools, hatchet looking weapons, magnifying glasses and more. Her design site is equally fascinating, filled with stop motion animations, slightly dark, slightly playful, mildly creepy. This line apparently takes its inspiration from “Cluedo” (yes yes, that detective game). “…they will please anyone with a dry, dark, irreverent humor and a taste for Monte Carlo’s luxury” [Monte Carlo being the designer’s hometown]… *noticed this one on the coolhunter, and on a side note, they are looking for tv personalities all over the world to do the “cool hunter tv show”… any comments on that?

Shade Elaine has started me noticing all the scissor/razor/gun/sword/knife miniature necklaces lately… and they really are popping up everywhere you turn, so does this means DRY, DARK, IRREVERENT HUMOR is in? It’s a sad, dark world. So if dark and dry is trendy, does that mean the anti-trend followers have to be bright and happy?

C&M update

Quickie reader request - not so involved with charles and marie anymore, since people have been asking lately… was just helping out with writing while josh spear was a main player in it, but pretty much dropped out when he did as he talked about here a while back. It was also making me stretch+sacrifice some of the better content… and as it grew, my tastes and those of the fictitous charles and marie parted ways as well. So i’m all notcot all the time these days.

Ugly Home

notwater-lamps-collection.jpg
The Parisian store, Ugly Home, also has these interesting pieces… for those who need light and lack a proper green thumb, these funky lamps… for those who can’t deal with real birds hanging out on wires, this adorable wallpaper… and then just a set of plates that caught my eye… Ugly Home, i have mixed feelings, for while the site is a bit painful to navigate, it is strangely appealing none the less.
