Red Dot - Joey Roth

joey.jpg
HAPPY NEW YEAR almost. And thank goodness for an end to 2005… and i welcome 2006 with open arms and a dash of skepticism. But all in all, Notcot has been one of the best things to happen this year, and here’s one of those tasty best for last of the year posts…

Designer Joey Roth (remember his Garden Geta and Shika posts back in the day?) - has done it again with his Totemo, winning the a Red Dot Award in Productivity this year. The Totemo is described as Strip down to cool. The growing importance of silence in computing mirrors a large-scale shift in the way people think about the products they use. The Totemo is designed with recording studios in mind, but is a computer case equally suited for the home or office environment. The omission of LED’s, molded plastic and cooling fans firmly differentiate Totemo from the many computers of today. Its concentration is based on the concept of stripping down the computer case to its bare essentials.

Modest designer that he is, Joey Roth wrote a feature article for Notcot, but just happen to leave out a description of his own project! So take a look at the Totemo on his site, and then read more about his favorite projects and stories from the Red Dot Awards which took place in Singapore recently.

Toys Part II

ROBORAPTOR.jpg
ROBORAPTOR… another silly holiday gift (yes, an xmas/bday gift, but i’m not exactly all that religious, so holiday gift works?) Designed and engineered by Mark Tilden (NASA background), these brilliantly fun little robot beings are gorgeous to look at, and highly amusing to leave roaming around the house. Chock full of sensors, and ingenious AI never before seen in such an accesible toy for kids/adults alike… it’s fun and technologically changing the level of robotics in toys as we know it. Boyfriend also just got the Robosapien V2, and you can have him fetching balls, grabbing beer cans, and even dancing and delivering pick up lines for you… He also interacts with my Raptor which is pretty sweet. Click the pic to read more, the Roboraptor and Robosapiens have made many “IT toy of the season” lists this year (from fashion mags to techy sites)… WOWWEE.com

NEW TOYS!

treo.pngBirthday+holiday gift… i have given in and have converted to the gprs/mobile pda world. Unbranded Unlocked GSM Treo 650 with T-mobile Gprs [Actually this will probably benefit people who like me to get im’s and emails immediately and to YOU notcot readers, since with the great camera i can run around taking pics of amusing things while shopping/wandering through my world, and also memos are key. I’m keeping lists in here, so i forget less of the things i want to share!] … things i love about it… camera works great, sd card expansion and ability to play music nicely, great syncing with Mac (from vcards to well just about everything i can come up with so far).

Progs I can’t live without for Palm OS 5-
MissingSync - best sync ever with Mac
Salling Clicker - I loved this with my old Sony Ericsson’s, even more gorgeous with Treo, and now i can use the Treo as my bluetooth trackpad pretty much
Pocket Tunes - with the iTunes 5 Skin, so gorgeous, works beautifully
Treo Alarm - I can’t do without an alarm on my phone to wake me up wherever i may be… this one does it great.
VolumeCare - You need it, it allows you to bump up volume for everything
VILLAGE SIM! - Best game EVER, so cute. You run the village… you click and drag the little guys around and they go “oooooh”. They build huts. You drag boys on girls and they make babies. [note: ok so thats simplified, also works vice versa, and depends on after the embrace whether they actually get along, if so they may “go inside”, then maybe babies happen]
Filez - So you can actually file browse and see where all those installs go
Verichat - Aim/MSN/Yahoo/etc client, you need to subscribe annually since it goes through third party server - verdict’s still out on that

p.s. if you know of other things i need, or some fun hacks, help me out!

Double Bastard

doublebastard.jpgOne more post on the demon theme (sorry guys, there’s something about devilish imagery that catches my eye, maybe its the red, and the wings and horns?)… Double Bastard Ale, has this rather gorgeous 3 Liter bottle of their Double Bastard Ale… complete with a nice stopper a LOCK, and its just a gorgeous bottle… for comparison i found a pic on google images for scale, and in the main picture, thats the 3L bottle next to a standard bottle.

Demonic Minis

11352.jpg I NEED THESE. Imagine everyone’s house you visit—- and just leaving one hidden somewhere (like inside a medicine cabinet)… or in stores… or photographing them in the least expected places (or on people’s shoulders). We all have a devil’s advocate around in our heads, this is just an adorably miniature manifestation of them (in a box of 50 for about 10$), which i suppose are intended for cocktails… Archie McPhee

The CLAW

candycatcher.pngWe’ve all played those annoying claw machines at arcades/random restaurants/etc etc, even if you don’t want to admit it. As a belated Jermacide present, this post goes out to him since he tried so hard at one to get this adorable stuffed animal baby boar (maybe i’ll post it someday) for me… anyhow, in decorating his new office, i think this is just what is missing…

What more would you want from your co-workers than to “Feel the frustration as you try to extract on from this irritatingly difficult machine before the music runs out!”… From the perfectly named store Perpetual Kid

The Food Loop

silstrap.jpg
HA. freakishly appealing in a strange inexplicable way. (yes yes, i know people are now claiming studies are showing sillicon appeals to women, but don’t researchers realize maybe there’s a part of that due to how practical and amazing the functions and features silicone provides are?)… but either way, the FOOD LOOP is a trip, and a fun website, with some of the best product photography i’ve seen in a while. Its imaginative and captivating, and they are just these hot pink crazy silicone straps!

Click to read more to see the pic of their great packaging as well. Design group Fusion Brands out of Atlanta really did an impressive job on the design and website of this product… and you MUST watch the video (with Snatch like music, and a playful simple cooking walk through, anyhow just watch it here)

Chopstick Kids

chopkids.pngJermacide was sending me mobile pics from the LACMA store earlier today, and amongst the goodies were these hilarious chopstick kids… literal plastic kids… who’s legs you extend with your own chopsticks… and then *poof* chopstick training devices… “Chinese with ease”… uh, nice? But on the brightside, it’s kind of a cute playful gift.

NOT-what?

nots.jpg
So a while back my sister found the town of DIDCOT, the anti-NOTCOT… well Jermacide and i were perusing the internet, and as always you just keep finding more… so in line with NOTCOT… we found NOTcOM an italian research group, Notcon “the last piece of the puzzle” design/marketing/internet group, and my personal favorite Notcutts garden center. And then, well there’s us, NOTCOT. So for all of you who thought NOTCOT was random (as did we), apparently we’ve got some competition in the NOTs.

Mugs!

splitdesign.png
As far as great use of CafePress goes, I’m very impressed with Split Design’s work. Seriously, how adorable are these mugs, while by now i’m sure you all know i’m a sucker for clean vector images, not to mention in basic black on white… so these mugs are getting high on my back up holiday gift list reccomendations… Who wouldn’t want one? Also great coasters and posters as well… check out the store here.

Olympic Friendlies

beijing_olympic_mascots.gif Mascots for sporting events have always struck me as a little weird. In the U.S., they’re usually aggressive, in your face, and “extreme.” I’ve noticed that mascots for international sporting events are more welcoming and friendly, and sometimes a little abstract. The ones for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games take it to another level. They’re cute and cuddly! I’m not sure how I feel about them being so darn cute, but I am totally loving the mascot for Shooting.

Muji Wine Opener

aluminum.pngNice design. Can’t wait to try one to see how well it works… the concept seems like it should work well, and visually there’s something enticing about it. Another Muji holiday gift suggestion.

Suburbia in a Bag

4547315689224.jpgSuburbia in a bag! The clean minimalistic playful Muji has come through on fun little holiday gifts with this Suburbia in a bag [keep in mind there is also Village in a bag, as well as London, New York, and Paris in bags]… for a mere 6 pounds. Cute gift, not that i’d neccessarily want to encourage kids to build in suburban style at too young an age, but it could be a nice tongue in cheek gift for your local real estate developer?

Offi Roller bench

offi.png
Much like those old fashioned roll top desks (i always secretly wanted one as a kid), combined with a nice curved bench, and then make it a functional storage space… You end up with this great children’s bench by Offi. Also: that little tab really looks like the bench is sticking its tongue out.

Cargo Holidays

CARGO.png
Cargo Cosmetics has some interesting ideas this holiday season… gift cards and tags with lip gloss samples built into them where all proceeds are donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. They have also launched their new Color Cards, single use credit card sized portions of eye shadow colors packaged in a simple tin, perfect for purses and wallets. Purchase at Sephora
