Unboxing: Kleenex Facial Cleansing

kleenex0.jpg

So, it seems Kleenex is branching out… to new Kleenex Facial Cleansing, which is currently only available on their own online store. Firstly - this post is about PACKAGING. (Because i’m not feeling the cleansing products so much. I even made Shawn try the wipe - and I tried the rest… and well, anything that isn’t cleanser free has a bit of a chemical scent/feel. So now that that’s out of the way… back to the packaging!) When i first saw pictures of this new line, i thought it was a student branding/packaging concept. It was so pretty - and it just didn’t seem like what i’d expect from Kleenex. So when i realized it was REAL, i had to poke at it all in person.

The Kleenex Facial Cleansing line has 5 products: exfoliating cushions (just add water and scrub), moist facial wipes, cotton soft pads (huge!), moist eye makeup removers, and shine away sheets. The branding is lovely and clean/fresh, and the products and packaging show that quite a bit of design and thoughtfulness went into each one. It’s cute that the exfoliating cushions, wipes, and eye makeup removers come in solid clear/white plastic containers (complete with o-rings to keep moist things from drying out!) - each is refillable by popping in a fresh pack. In reality - the refillable boxes are of much higher quality than i expected. Biggest surprise of all - the bottoms all have holes! If you expected to use these containers later for anything else, think again! (Though you could keep an empty plastic refill pack inside.)

Take a look at the unboxing and product details on the next page!

The Sill x Brian Giniewski

sill1.jpg

Yes, i know, i’m totally going through a plant obsession at the moment (as you can see on Instagram), and as usual that comes with a heavy design filter on it. It comes through phases, and between craziness my gardens have always been a source of inspiration, distraction, amusement, and fascination. Also - it’s spring! So even the folks who aren’t in year round, warm sunniness are all plant/garden happy at the moment! And it’s so contagious! With our California drought situation - while some are all about hardscaping and saving water, i’ve been finding myself wanting to SAVE THE TREES! My inner lorax is coming out every time we see people killing off their lush yards, only to hardscape them or fill them with “drought tolerant plants” and then proceed to not water them… AT ALL… and then a few weeks later we watch it all whither away… and their large stunning trees dry out and get blown over in the wind. It’s the saddest! So, the drought sucks, but our trees deserve some water too… they help purify the air, provide shade, and give so many native creatures a home! Anyhow - rant over - i’m kind of plant obsessed at the moment and having so much fun with it!

So on plant/design intersections… how awesome are these colorful cake like pots? This limited collection for The Sill by Brian Giniewski is just mesmerizing. Especially their popping pastel photoshoot! Each piece in the collection is a one of a kind artist edition that is hand thrown and kiln fired 4 times. And literally dripping with color. Take a look at the details on the next page!

The (Hot) Cactus Store of Echo Park

cactus1.jpg

The Cactus Store in Echo Park is something one needs to experience in person. I can’t explain quite how surreal it feels to be in a space the size of my kitchen, tiptoeing through a maze of cinder blocks with terra cotta pots balanced on top of them… each filled with incredibly beautiful and SUPER STABBY cacti. We’ve all heard of being the bull in a china shop, but this felt more like you’re a piece of china walking through a shop of bulls! One mis-step and those cactus thorns will get you!

Perhaps they too also realize you can only really experience in person, since the website gives you little info (or imagery) of what you will find there. It in fact looks more like a site that is channeling the 90’s internet - with flashing backgrounds and bold colored basic fonts and blocks… though the main background is a google maps street view of the desert in Chile. But their HotCactus_LA Instagram will give you a bit more of a peek into their world if you can’t make it in person. According to Gardenista - “The tiny 350-square-foot store is run by a group of a cactus collectors, enthusiasts, and friends: Carlos Morera, (a graphic designer and alum of LA-based Commune Design), along with his uncle Johnny Morera (legendary nursery man and cactus wizard) and four more friends (Jeff Kaplon, Max Martin, Greg Passuntino, and Professor Christian Cummings).” Some of these guys are also behind Help Ltd., a local design studio. They don’t stock just any cacti - there seem to be amazing stories behind the places they source them all and the team is incredibly knowledgable about all things cacti. A collector and plant lover alike will be enamored by the world they’ve created. Now if only their space expanded and we got a chance to see their amazing greenhouses and studio spaces too!

Take a look on the next page for a peek inside the store! I couldn’t help but walk away with half a dozen gorgeously simple pots for my ever growing garden too!

Qeeboo Rabbit by Giovannoni

rabbit7.jpg

It’s so much easier to cover design fairs from your couch these days… instagram hashtags, snapchat, tweets, etc. give you so many first hand views of… everything?!?!?! Though of course we’d all notice and discover different things in person, it’s fascinating to step back and realize how much more (and how quickly!) we can see things these days.

That being said, i’ve been happily binging on Milan Design Week Instagrams to satisfy my curiosity and slight twinge of wonder about whether i should be there - but then i remember the insanity and appreciate how magical technology is to let us sit back and take it all in without the chaos!

… and one thing that has been taking over the feeds this Milan Design Week is definitely Giovannoni’s qeeboo… and particularly his new RABBIT! There is the Rabbit Chair, the Rabbit Lamp, and the Rabbit Chair Baby. They seem to be all over Milan, and they are pure instagram bait. Apparently people (big and small!) haven’t been able to resist hopping on them, and of course snapping pics!

Will the rabbit be the new Aarnio Puppy or Eames Elephant? See more pics on the next page.

Cybex by Marcel Wanders

cybexwanders0.jpg

The Cybex by Marcel Wanders “Parents Collection” that is freshly launching at Milan Design Week is making me glad we don’t have a baby… because that pig and rocker are pretty tempting! If only the rocker/chairs had the ability to evolve and grow beyond infant stages to stay useful in a kid free home! The collection includes a high chair, rocker, bouncer, and colorful accessories for infants. Check out the collection on the next page!

Luftgekuhlt 2016: Porsches at Modernica

luft0.jpg

If there was any question that air-cooled Porsches are having a moment, today’s Luftgekuhlt (german for air-cooled) proved it without a doubt. Pulling into Vernon (the city’s crest says “Exclusively Industrial”) amongst the quiet empty warehouses on a Sunday morning, the streets are filled with Porsche coupes… parked all around the Modernica warehouse for blocks, and driving around hunting for parking. It seemed like a lot of Porsches outside the event… as soon as you step INSIDE, there are literally hundreds of them - gorgeous shiny curves in a rainbow of colors. And for every car there are about a dozen people and probably a dog and a toddler too. The crowd was HUGE! And beyond gawking at all the cars, getting to know the vintage porsche community (cars and porsche specialists came from around the country - and beyond!)… Modernica gave everyone free reign to wander the workshops and warehouses!

When Shawn first told me about the event - as soon as i heard Porsche and Modernica and Deus Ex Machina, and every Porsche fanatic we knew were coming together… AND limited edition products specially for the event… i was in. In the Dabs Myla building at the Modernica factory, there was a pop up shop filled with Porsche parts, limited edition Porsche/Modernica Eames Chairs, Deus Ex Machina t-shirts, posters being screen printed live, stunning products from Discommon Goods and more… This Luftgekuhlt is the third and largest event yet. All three have been in LA - can’t wait to see where they decide to hold it in 2017!

Take a peek at the experience and details on the next page!

Petco Dog Toys with (Squeaker) Heart

campingtoys0a.jpg

There’s nothing more delightful than a thoughtfully designed surprise. Especially when you don’t even remotely expect it! Any dog owner (or friend of a dog) knows that squeakers don’t get to stay in toys long, and have likely experienced collecting up MANY clear plastic circular squeakers. Well Bucky just received an adorable camping themed duck and moose, and when it came time to get the squeaker from him (aka 5 minutes after he got the toys)… it was a red heart! These Petco Leaps & Bounds Camper Collection literally have heart! And they don’t even seem to advertise it on the product descriptions or labels. I love that they tucked a secret surprise into the toys where you least expect it.

Yay for delightful design! Designing physical objects that transcend their basic purpose and change the experience for the happier! They remind me of the red construction paper heart inside the Whole Foods Talking Pineapple Armadillo!

Paintings of Cinta Vidal

cinta1.jpg

There’s something magical about the way Cinta Vidal sees and paints the world - it’s a world that pulls you in to all the details and the potential and endlessness of her tiny planets filled with life, houses, campsites, people, and lovely trees! Staring into them, i can’t help but wish i could spin the planets around to see what’s happening on the other sides! Above is Roca. See some of my other favorites on the next page (which i try to figure out which print i need!)

p.s. i’ve been spinning my laptop to see the paintings with different sides on top… they almost need rotating frames for viewing!

Sarah K Benning Plant Embroidery

benning0.jpg

This weekend i’ve been enamored by the Plant Embroidery of Sarah K Benning - when debating whether to share it with you, i kept finding myself mesmerized with her instagram, so i had to share! There’s something beautiful about the way she uses embroidery to share her love of plants (and funky modern plant stands, pots, desks, rugs and more) - and they will have you noticing leaves of house plants and cacti in a whole new way. Take a look at some of my favorites on the next page!

Rumpl Down Puffy

rumplmain.jpg

Wow. The Rumpl Down Puffy is SO WARM. The kind folks at Rumpl sent one over last week, and taking it up to the Cowboy Cabin in Julian, CA was the perfect test! At a “trekking size” of 54”x80” (like a slightly short twin) with 600 fill duck down insulation - it weighs in at a mere 1.12 lbs. And it is WARM. I overheat curled up with it on the couch at home, but in the cold rainy mountain night in a 1940’s cabin… it was perfect! I ran around outside in a tank top wrapped in the down puffy and stayed cozy. I curled up in it as we got the fire going, and it felt SO good! And when we needed an extra layer on the bed at night - it warmed us up fast! Though being made of 200 Ripstop Nylon (like a sleeping bag) is it incredibly slippery, so we had to retrieve it from wherever it would slide off to in the night. We’ll be tossing the Rumpl Down Puffy in the car for future road trips and adventures for sure! Check out the pictures and unboxing on the next page!

Eastern SoCal Bday Adventures!

cainstaMAIN.jpg

Shawn (+ Bucky) and I love a good road trip - exploring new places, finding new spots in old places, and just seeing where the road (or dirt paths) take us! For his 30th birthday, we decided to carve 60 hours out of our busy schedule to hop in the NOTFZJ80, and aim southeast… exploring our way out to Murrieta and Temecula on our way to hide out in Julian (for pie! and nature time in a little cabin on top of a hill amongst 30 acres of wildlife refuge!)… with a day trip to the Salton Sea and off roading to/thru The Slot in Anza Borrego… and swinging back home through Ramona, Poway, and up the coast via San Diego.

It was an amazing and rejuvenating trip filled with surprises! Also… Julian Pie Co. is still worth the drive after all these years. Mmmm that dutch apple pie. (Also the cherry pie. And the take and bake chicken pot pie was divine in the cabin on a rainy night!) There were far more breweries and wineries than we ever expected out there! Best find was definitely the Refuge Brew Blood Orange Wit! So delicious, and the can is gorgeous! Apparently Bucky is more interested in bunnies than squirrels… and deer and horses just aren’t that exciting anymore to him. We found a lot of similar Land Cruisers out at the Slot and squeezed through as far as we could!!! Who knew there’s even a Camel Dairy in Ramona along the highway!

Check out our mini adventure in pictures on the next page!
