Paul Smith Balls

psballs.jpg
Growing crush on Paul Smith goods lately, their streaky ad campaign, the incredible limited ed fabrics with the signature stripes, and… these great footballs/soccerballs just in time for World Cup season. Found this ad campaign on my urban junkies

In Bloom

lagmag.jpg
Jackson Stakeman, fashion/beauty photographer, and my tourguide through NY, has a beautiful vibrant photoeditorial up at Lagmagazine. I tried to get a photographer’s statement out of him, and it was less than easy - but he did divulge that “I like images that have an idea in them, so the goal was to strip down both images until they were just color and design and hold them in opposition - Inspiration meets Reality.” - so go take a look at his floral vs. beauty shots. Full collection of images below…

His work look familiar? Well he also shot NOTed our first NOTcot EDitorial. Take a look at more of his work at his website or feel free to help me pressure him in to shooting more NOTed pieces, and other great shoots as innovative as these.

Lust Objectified

lelomain.jpg
NEA, Pleasure Object surprised me in my mailbox a few days ago. We previously posted about them here. Lelo of Sweden prides themselves on providing the world with LUST OBJECTIFIED and as if their website and imagery weren’t classy and seductive enough… they sent one over. They describe it as an “ornate pleasure object with a porcelain-like finish and deceptively powerful purr. Decorating the glossy exterior, pleasing to the eye as well as to the touch, are delicate floral motifs reminiscent of the belle époque.” And it’s even more powerful and beautifully designed in person than in the pictures - review below.

Think more…

handle.jpg
More goodness from the art collective ATYPYK. The weapon like candle stick, that doesn’t even appear able to stand on its own. The peaceful Mercedes Benz. And possibly the one stool that would be great to have in a party, if only just to watch people avoid it.

MAIL!

treehuggin.jpg
Yay! Mail! Ok, excitement aside - I do not think i will ever fail to get excited to find a package in the mailbox, especially one that opens up to such fun goodies from down under. So first things first, you tear open the mailer pouch after glancing at all the customs stickers and signed “Dangerous Goods and Aviation Security Statement” - there is a nice hand painted cardboard box, with what looks like an inkjet printed label on it (see image below)… and when you pop that open, before you even get to the shirt - i found PEOPLE LIKE US candy (sucking on a piece now) - that literally has ‘people like us’ written in it… some stickers, pins, postcards, and a silly little puffer fish toy! As for the shirt, I received the Tree Hugger, which fits beautifully, is flattering and incrediblly soft, and i love the little red robin just as much now as i did when i first found it.

Stuff Ball

stuffball.jpgIt’s summer and with so many trips and adventures waiting to happen, i have been stumbling across some very fun outdoor oriented products! So here’s an interesting idea - you’ve seen stuff sacks galore, but seldom are they useful for more than literally stuffing with stuff. Well Granite Gear has designed these playful trail toys the Stuff Ball and the Stuff Football… cordura zippered bags, you fill it with socks/cable/etc, and it becomes a hacky sack or football! A nice multipurpose product that you can easily stuff into the tiniest crevice in your pack, or use it to hold cables or rice or anything else you can think of. Cute idea. Bit pricey for 11$, but we’re a resourceful bunch, right?

DIY Radio

diyradio.png
Tune’N’Radio - this DIY radio is such a brilliantly basic idea with so much variation and personal character ready to show through in each and every unique piece - and i love that the end user HAS to customize it somehow, creating the need for one to be creative whether they realize or not. The concept is simple - you drill your own holes to let the sound out of the metal box… and you afix your own antenna like piece to get reception. Its really like a magic box of sorts you have to work at to make it look cool and work (although i think whatever you do, will make it look pretty sweet.) San Juan Kayaks

sanjuan.jpg
Design inspiration shows up in the least expected places… It’s a kayak themed weekend - ended up at the Newport Paddlesports Expo today.

While there I expected the usual cliche of polyeurathane injection molded looking kayaks - and to my surprise, I discovered these beautiful fiberglasses pieces of art, in vibrant colors and incredibly sleek curves. These San Juan Kayaks are handmade in Arizona by Jay Turner, and he’s been perfecting his craft for over 20 years! The designs are so timeless, he hasn’t needed to change his molds since. Inspired by his passion for boats, fishing, and better design - not to mention a past in the navy - he found a niche in the kayak market and with over half a dozen companies showing, nothing compared aesthetically. (look carefully and you can probably see the resemblences between these kayaks and speed boats)

I tried so many different kayaks today, I think I’ve caught up on the options out there - and this was the most fun and versatile of all… Take a look at the foot holds and the seat - compared to the padded/foam seats (with adjustability one could compare to my car), I never expected the sleek subtle curve to be so comfortable and functional. [see more images below] There is definitely something to be said for simpliticty and ingenious design.

Melvin Galapon

melvin.jpg
Look LEFT. Look RIGHT. NEW TAGS!!! Gallery Notcot is proud to present the work of Melvin Galapon for the month of June. The most exciting thing about this piece is how much you see in the tags, yet how much more fascinating the images become when you look closer. He handcrafts these incredible pieces with everything you least expect as the mediums, from tiny pen crosses in graph paper, to 2” pins, to those round label stickers, to push pins, and even the cardboard remains of waitress’ notepads! So explore on. [And i know you love the Bush PINHEAD piece…] And if you’re one who likes order, start at the beginning of the gallery here.

Design Fact Finder

designfactfinder.pngThe British Design Council is making a big push to educate the public (especially businesses) about the value and importance of our field. Design is key! So i’m glad they are launching a campaign to reinforce that, and their new site Design Fact Finder is a place to explore exactly HOW critical design is - chock full of numbers for those business types that don’t believe why they need to hire you.

Movers & Shakers

shakers-lg.jpgFred makes these fun little pull toy shakers, for when you don’t feel like shaking it yourself, or just to add a little life to your table/meal/etc. This could be great for powdered sugar actually, to get that perfectly snowy look on your french toast. Check them out at Calliope.

Apologies

oopssorry.jpg
SORRY! I feel a little silly apologizing to all of you. But i know i’ve been a bit off my game the last week or two - Oxford was hectic, and jetlag this week has not been pretty! So just wanted to let you know that i’ve had so many different things happening (many relating to NOTCOT projects growing quickly!) - finally got a new car (my first car that wasn’t inherited and my first NEW car) - and spent the very early morning out on the beach with my dad to break in his new kayak (only telling you that to explain the pic up top!). So be nice, and i’ll have lots of goodies to come for you… and the posts will pick back up as well… and please spread the word on NOTCOT.org, its been so much fun getting more people posting to it, and just having a place to share all the random bits we don’t always have time to get on NOTCOT.

Oddica Packaging

oddica2.jpg
You’ve been seeing Oddica’s shirts around the usual tee sites, and i even posted about their philosophies and sweet designs previously… The brilliant and nice folks over there sent a shirt over to Jermacide to review, and while he’s busy with work at the moment, i couldn’t help forcing him to let me post the packaging first! Isn’t it fun? T-shirts shouldn’t be just another piece of clothing stuffed in an envelope - the experience of opening and exploring mail isn’t dead. So check out the great custom printed ziploc like envelopes they use, and the great slew of postcards, pins, stickers, and the really fun old school “library book card” that gives you an easy way to a) keep track of what shirts your have and b) loan them out to people and track them.
