While exploring Las Vegas for SEMA, I love to escape into the least vegas feeling Vdara in City Center. Of course this means being surrounded by the stunning mix of modern architecture and large scale modern sculptures galore. One can’t help but stare at Nancy Rubins’ Big Edge in the center of the huge roundabout ~ with boats somehow forming a huge tree light structure… with more than 200 aluminum boats — canoes, rowboats and flat-bottomed boats strung together with steel wire into a colorful cluster held together with cantilevers, they manage to look nearly in motion, as if exploding apart! Nancy Rubins has been making these large boat structures for some time now and Big Edge is a larger version of her “Big Pleasure Point” in the Lincoln Center in New York, with similar pieces around the country. Perhaps one of the best parts of being placed in the center of City Center in Las Vegas is the ability for everyone to enjoy it in so many different lighting situations, so Shawn Sims had a little late night photoshoot last night wandering up close to it to share some of its amazing looks at night! Sure the new California Driver’s Licenses started in Oct 2010… but since mine was about to expire, i’ve only just gotten bored enough to get one and stare at it up close… WAY up close… with the microscope. It’s quite awesome seeing where they went all Toys R Us with the backwards R… hidden little strings of text in microscopic ascii art fashion nearly invisible to the naked eye… initials and birth year are tucked all over… some birthdays and signatures are raised… when you hold it up to the light you can see the state bear appear out of tiny holes… So take a peek at the details and some of the beautiful patterns they used super close up on my new driver’s license!

Foldboat (the design duo Max Frommeld and Arno Mathies) featured a special Dock edition boat at Tom Dixon’s ‘Multiplex at The Dock’ during the London Design Festival. As the name suggests, the boat is literally folded from a flat 2.5m x 1.5m plastic sheet and can be transformed from flat sheet to row boat by a single person in 2 minutes using only 3 components. Amazingly fun to see it action ~ see more pictures of it at the Dock as well as close ups on the next page!

Another highlight from Superdesign was David Roux-Fouillet’s Diamond Shot, a fun and unique way to set a diamond. That’s right, specially made bullets are quite literally shot into jewellery to create the setting. Roux-Fouillet’s bullets are composed of 24ct gold, diamond, tool steel, and ivory, turtle shell, bull horn or silk (depending on the model). Bullets can be fired into rings, earrings or pendant structures made of platinum or 9ct gold. More photos of the setup and a video of the setting in action on the next page!
Last night, popped by the latest show of Peter Gronquist, The Evolution Will Be Fabulous at Gallery 1988 in Venice. It’s AMAZING, definitely something worth checking out in person, because the mix of gilded luxe brands, weaponry, skeletons and taxidermy are just something you can’t completely comprehend through pictures… the shear scale of things is pretty mesmerizing in real life. For this latest in unexpected combinations, we love the idea of an object that can be used to hold just about anything your mind can dream up ~ while functioning like a giant clothespin! Another discovery from this year’s 100% Design, Been Kim’s DrinKlip. Sometimes you just can’t find a cupholder when you need one. How convenient would it be if you could add your own to any surface? That’s exactly what DrinKlip sets out to do. The piece clips onto desks, shelves, or even the arm of your chair using a classic clothespin design and gives you a cup that can carry up to 1kg. These clips come in a range of fun colors and can hold all sorts of things (love the idea of using them for plants!). Another fun architectural piece I adored this year was this beautiful, delicacy filled indoor glasshouse by VONSUNG for Tramshed 2011. The Glasshouse was designed by Joseph Sung, Michiko Ito, Jing Chen, Gernando Cavalli and Grace Hsu and served as a pop-up cafe. Sung describes the Glasshouse as design nurturing the relationship between construction and innovation, forming an ‘incubator’ for the food within. From outside, the polycarbonate structure looks like a hybrid between a polytunnel and a glasshouse, with soft lighting permeating its translucent walls. It somehow manages to be simultaneously eerie and inviting. Great touches follow within as well, like the playful Peter Pan rabbits from Ligne Roset, and of course plenty of tasty treats as well (Vietnamese delicacies from Viet Hoa). One of my highlights of this year’s 100% Design event would have to be finally seeing the amazing animal chairs from Maximo Riera in person! You may remember his octopus chair which we previously featured here and more recent rhino and walrus additions. These beautiful throne-like pieces of furniture are even more amazing to behold in person. The detailing on the animals is exquisite and incredibly realistic. Another feature that is evident upon seeing the chairs is their enormous size! Like the animals they are designed to reflect, these pieces are truly colossal.
