Cría Cuervos Amor des Amor

guru0.jpg Exploring La Roma, stumbled upon Guru ~ a gallery and shop filled with low brow/surrealist/playful art, it was filled with so many NOTCOT favorites (both artists and products!) So, as i hunted to learn more about similar mexican artists, i discovered them putting up some beautiful black vinyl sticker silhouettes for an opening tonight by a Mexican creative collective, Cría Cuervos, in the back room. Being only two blocks away, i couldn’t resist popping by tonight to check it out ~ and it was beautiful! And packed! There was even a cop on the corner across the way watching/waiting… as people overflowed into the street. But about the show… Amor des Amor is an exposition of tshirts ~ each of the 11 artists (Ángeles Barajas, Cristina Medrano, Alejandra Aguirre, Ernesto Alcántara, Luis Flores, Jonathan López, Allan G. Ramírez, Miguel A. Cárdenas, Alejandro Gómez, Erick Knobl and Abraham Solís) designed a tshirt, which is hung in a gilded frame over the black vinyl stickers on the white walls… with the love/valentine’s day theme, it was the perfect shopping opportunity and people were snapping up the shirts quickly! Take a peek at the scene and designs on the next page!

Omar Rodriguez-Graham Horses

horse1.jpg The sun set on us as we wandered into Plaza Rio de Janeiro in the La Roma area of Mexico City… and as we looked away from the grandiose replica of David in the park, suddenly these stunning nearly life sized oil paintings of horses were staring at us through the glow of Arróniz Arte Contemporáneo. Turns out it is the work of Mexican painter Omar Rodriguez-Graham - most breathtaking in the solo show “Variaciones Sobre un Tema” which opened yesterday, are these two HUGE oil on cotton canvas pieces he did in 2009. They measure 300cm x 250cm (10’x8’). The woman in the gallery was telling us about how his work used to be far more grotesque and somber, and in 2009 he started these horse paintings… you can see more in his portfolio. Most fascinating really is how real they look from afar, and how abstract they seem close up… see my favorites on the next page!

Carlos Bonil’s Restos @ el 52

plaskull1.jpg While here in Mexico City for 2 nights with Kahlua, staying in La Roma at Hotel Brick… with snippets of free time, we’ve wandered and eaten our way through La Roma, Polanco, and La Condessa, and today i took a little walk hunting for cute design/art to check out… pardon the cell phone pics, but i thought i was just taking a little stroll!

Irresistible yet eerie, here is a peek at Carlos Bonil’s Restos that i came across at Galeria OMR’s el 52. They are skulls and skeletons made from plastic… in medical looking plastic containers… they are made of things like plastic forks! Totally mesmerizingly odd, see the pics on the next page to see what i mean!

Alex Posada ‘The Particle’ - Kinectica 2011

alexposadamain.jpg Armed with her camera, Justine checked out the Kinetica Art Fair for us, and found some inspiring and fun art pieces i’m loving! Here’s what she had to say about it…

The highlight of the 2011 Kinetica Art Fair for me was Alex Posada’s ‘The Particle’, which had me mesmerized. A spectacle of light and sound, a seemingly simple wire frame studded with lights came to life. Posada writes of his piece “Experimenting with colour, sound and movement, the continuous rotation, speed and light create visual effects that define the spatial structure of the object.” The exhibit has a further layer of complexity, the regulatory mechanism of the design is based on the haphazard decision-making manner, forming new models. This means that the structures cannot be anticipated, but instead evolve through continual iterations involving the viewer. You simply must check out more pics and videos on the next page!

Dianne Harris at the Kinetica Art Fair 2011

flourescent1.jpg Armed with her camera, Justine checked out the Kinetica Art Fair for us, and found some inspiring and fun art pieces i’m loving! Here’s what she had to say about it…

I discovered the work of Dianne Harris at the 2011 Kinetica Art Fair, where her Neon works Caduceus, E=MConsciousness2 and Eternally Yours were featured. Dianne’s work “aims to heighten and advance human potentiality and question the self-imposed limitations that serve to confine the very nature of our ideas, thoughts and being” and perfectly captured Kinetica Art Fair’s theme of Body, Brain and Consciousness. See more pictures on the next page!

Rosemary Anrude at Interiors

woody.jpg Justine went to check out the Birmingham Interiors 2011 show ~ and brought back some awesome pics ~ here’s her next post!

Another find at Interiors 2011, was the work of Rosemary Anrude! It’s hard not to be drawn right over to her booth showing off trestles and stools, a line of furniture that uses wooden threads and maple trestles for playful nuts and bolts furniture. It brings the little kid right out of you. In fact, biggest problem with this furniture line might be resisting the impulse to decon/reconstruct it all. See more pics on the next page!

Birmingham City University at Interiors

birminghamcityunibotanic.jpg Justine went to check out the Birmingham Interiors 2011 show ~ and brought back some awesome pics ~ here’s her first post!

Earlier this week, I wandered up to Birmingham for Interiors 2011. One of my favorite stands at the show was a showcase by the students at Birmingham City University. Their four trend pavilions set out four unique student interpretations of Global Color Mix Trends for Autumn/Winter 2011/12 and titled ‘Afrika’, ‘Curve’, ‘Botanic’ and ‘Fable’. Take a peek at lots more pics on the next page!

The Macallan Albert Watson NYC Launch

watson1.jpg Oooh these 4am posts after afterparties are becoming a dangerous habit! But there’s just something more fun about sharing gorgeous experiences with you quickly while i’m still riding the wave of inspiration from the preceding hours.

Tonight was the NYC launch of The Macallan’s Masters of Photography second series, featuring stunning photographs by the renowned, Albert Watson. The series is a limited edition set of special Masters of Photography bottles of Macallan paired with platinum prints. While visiting the Macallan Estate a few months ago, they teased us with sneak peeks of the images… projected on the screen in a dark room, while sipping the limited edition deliciousness (i can’t even tell you how spectacular this particular blend is! Yum.) our jaws dropped as we begged them to let us seem them again. So months later, it is a delight to finally see the prints in their true form… and meet Albert Watson himself! (Our friends at Cool Hunting have a lovely interview with him about the series.)

This project follows the story of the casks… from the trees in spain as they become barrels and as barrels become filled with what is aged to become the scotch we know and love in Scotland… and it’s photographed through the eyes of a couple going on a romantic and adventurous roadtrip from spain to scotland. As fun as it is to see the models and mini, the images of nature, the wood as it gets transformed, and the FIRE, are truly breath taking! See all of the platinum print images on the Masters of Photography site.So before i embark on a little road trip with the Macallan in a few hours, i wanted to give you a peek at the launch event, the behind the scenes video, and more… see it all on the next page!

The Standard x KAWS Light Bulbs

kawsstore00.jpg André Balazs Properties have always had gorgeously unique light bulbs… Chateau Marmont has a playful Pan (god of fertility, unbridled male sexuality and carnal desire to name a few) in a bulb… The Mercer has its signature M… it’s about time that The Standard Hotel’s had theirs as well! Announced last night, and literally flying off their digital and physical shelves, the KAWS Light Bulb Set for the Standard are a limited, but non-numbered edition of 1,000 sets that contain 3 bulbs each, of one bulb in each color: red, purple and green. While a few blocks away, i popped over to check out the new display of them in The Standard New York Shop window… as well as unboxing them and playing with them up close! The glow just draws you in, and the X’s are so signature KAWS. Ready to take a peek at it all up close? See the many pics on the next page!

Chandelier Creative Pop Up Penthouse

sparkle0.jpg The most incredible pop up book penthouse of a surprise arrived last week. And like a little kid, i still have it opened up on my kitchen table, and i can’t help poking at it, constantly finding new details, and pulling the tabs. This surprise came from Chandelier Creative - the bright pink box greets you with a COME SPARKLE… and the book cover has a bold OMG! It’s Christmas again! Step inside the Chandelier Creative Penthouse and Drink more Champagne than Joan Collins… Anyhow, the details and illustrations are so much fun, you have to explore the pictures on the next page, excuse me for going a little overboard, but there was far too much awesome to share!
