Squadt NKD Jack + QPMNT PAC 1

squadt0.jpg Oh, Project Squadt (A collaborative effort between Ferg and ThreeZero, brought to you by Jamungo). Amazing creatures ~ beings? ~ with masks, and faces, and interchangeable eyes, and some bad ass weaponry. I’ve always wanted one… never quite made the lightning fast online limited edition sales… so when i stumbled upon some in the Toy Art Gallery Store, i couldn’t resist. And upon realizing they were right here in LA ~ popped over to the store to pick it up! While i still wish i could find one of the gas mask guys ~ for now i’m playing with Squadt NKD Jack + QPMNT PAC 1! Complete with bathrobe, various arms, tactical knife, tactical chest rig, sUMP, sMK23 with holster, and long sleeve shirt. They really are so photogenic too… see him in various set ups and unboxing on the next page!

p.s. how awesome are the dogs?

Here’s a look at Gorgeous Guerrilla Gardening window series at Selfridges’ Orchard Street side, which launched March 4th. Banksy Gets Plexi’d

banksysaved.jpg In case i don’t say it enough ~ you, readers, are awesome! And when i get fun emails with pictures of running into Banksy’s being covered in LA that a reader’s wife sent him… how can i not share? (Thanks, Abner!)

So what’s the story? My wife was with her brothers, sister in law and 2 year old niece hunting for Banksys and they encountered that scene: Banksy was being preserved. Here is how she describes it: I asked who had told them to cover it up, it had been the owner of the building who had asked them to do this. They only said, “Him, the guy that made it.” Photo credits to Sandra Gonzalez! While it’s tempting to veer into the state of the cultural perception of Banksy… or discuss shark jumping, or impressive impact beyond the street art/art world… How about we just revel in the amusement of turning a corner and running into a team of guys trying to plexiglass the side of a building? Take a peek at the close up on the next page too…

p.s. it’d be perfect if someone added imagery ON the plexi of the guys putting it up. And then added another layer above that to protect it… and so on… and so on… street art sandwich?

Becca ~ aka Rebecca Midwood

becca0.jpg Becca! From art school roots, to street art, to gallery shows, more street art, to teaching, and back? I love the stylistic/contextual juxtapositions and versatility of her work and experiences! They are very ~ Dick & Jane meet pin ups meet fashion illustrations… in gorgeously refreshing colors… pasted up around the city! I rediscovered her this weekend when popping by the new Street Art Pop Up Store/Gallery… started by Z (who, like many, is part of the Obey Giant family), focusing on creating a space to showcase and sell the works of established street artists. Amongst the work the day after the opening, there was a stack of amazing prints/posters/originals… and i fell in love with a Becca print. No surprise, i suppose, since i even posted the show it came from a show featured on NOTCOT.org ages ago (but i forgot! until i looked it up at home!)… Anyhow, Becca has some amazing work, take a peek at the pics and video on the next page!

Ryan McGinness’ Women: Vinyls at StandardNY

mcwomen1.jpg Clean vectory iconic goodness, i always have a soft spot for the work of Ryan McGinness. And his latest to launch today is an installation of Women: The Blacklight Paintings (being put up now!) and vinyl installations at the Standard New York’s Shop and Le Bain presented by Country Club. This latest project is a follow up to his Miami Art Basel show. Just received some pictures of the vinyl installations, and they make me want to run over to my vinyl cutter and cover my windows and blank walls with stickers! Fun playful imagery of women, almost abstractly tribal in their varied curviness. And of course, there are also limited edition posters and silk screened print of the Blacklight Nudie playing cards. While the Playing card print is a bit pricey for most, no worries, the actual Blacklight Nudie Cards will be released in LA in the Spring and available across all Standards. Take a peek at them on the next page!

Mies is more takes a splattery look at the Barcelona chair… check them out on the next page!

Penguin: Great Ideas

penguin1.jpg I love books. I love the feel of print. And with ebooks growing in popularity, design and packaging of print is as important as ever… and there are still irresistible books i’ll run into… in the case of Penguin’s Great Ideas series, i wanted them all. They are so adorable, so classic, and so gorgeous with their beautifully designed covers with that letter pressed texture that you can’t help running your fingers over. I had restraint and only bought two last night when grabbing tacos at Brentwood Country Mart when i couldn’t resist a quick look in Diesel, A Book Store. But of course with the two i purchased (a combination of content and cover design went into the decision of course) ~ i came home to look up the rest of the series and covers and my favorites are on the next page. The concept behind the series really is such a lovely idea as well: “Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves - and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted. They have enriched lives - and destroyed them. Now Penguin brings you the works of the great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization, and helped make us who we are.” ~ see all the loveliness on the next page.

Jun Ga Young’s ‘Whistling Sea’ at Kinectica 2011

switch.jpg Armed with her camera, Justine checked out the Kinetica Art Fair for us, and found some inspiring and fun art pieces i’m loving! Here’s what she had to say about it…

Jun Ga Young’s ‘Whistling Sea’ is another incredible piece at the 2011 Kinetica Art Fair which consisted of hanji paper, creating a sea of colours and hues, which change sometimes calmly and at other times rapidly along with the music. There’s something magical watching it in action, so take a peek at the videos on the next page!

Installation 7: Scion Art Tour

installation1.jpg Beautiful opening tonight to kick off the 2011 series of exhibitions at the Scion Artspace LA in Culver City. First show of the season Installation 7: Video - (video trailer here) Challenging 10 artists to create 2-8min non-narrative video pieces, you can see some amazing original work from Franki Chan, David Choe, Cheryl Dunn, Gluekit, Matt Goldman, Cody Hudson & Jared Eberhardt, The London Police, Mackie Osborne, Souther Salazar and SSUR. If you’re in the area, definitely worth experiencing them in person ~ if not in LA, the tour is heading to Brooklyn end of March, Wichita end of April, Minneapolis beginning of June, and ends in Austin in July. Openings like these are enjoyable on so many levels… viewing the pieces larger than life with sounds mixing (there are three projections in the main room), viewing them on tvs with headphones in the back, and watching people watch them in wonder. It truly must be experienced… and then photos of the experience almost become a whole other experience to share! So get over there if you can, and take a peek at my view on the experience on the next page… from fun text over gorgeous scenery to people being slapped while they wait in the shower to pachelbel’s canon, to those crazy huge promotional balloon beings… you’ll see what i mean on the next page.
